Nate Marquardt: Georges St. Pierre 'is going to kill' B-level fighter Dan Hardy

Gsp-determined_medium
Props: TSN.ca

Quoteworthy:

"I think Georges is going to kill him. I think Dan Hardy's an up-and-comer guy, he's a young guy. He has a lot of potential. In my opinion, he's a good B-level fighter and I think Georges is going to destroy him. He's young, that's the thing. He could be a great fighter one day. But he's not there and he's getting his shot way too early."

Nate Marquardt, friend and team mate of current UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, has an unflattering assessment of number one contender Dan Hardy, who meets "Rush" in the main event of UFC 111 on March 27 in Newark, New Jersey. "The Outlaw" earned his shot at the 170-pound crown by default, in sort of a last-man-standing elimination of potential heirs to the throne. "The Great" thinks Hardy is getting his title fight too soon -- but is there anyone (not a rematch) you would rather see first?

if george hadnt have already got serrad...

there was a chance we could see a hardy ko.but george is just too smart and too good to let that happen to him twice.george has got ths belt as long as he wants it to be fair.personally i just pray that shogun beats machida then im 99% sure ando will move up for a title shot and gsp(olympics aside) will move up and start his mw career.then wve got a mini ww tourney.

by scott1 on Jan 25, 2010 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

agreed.

Nate is right that Hardy got this shot way to early. He would get beat thoroughly by Fitch, Alves, Kos, and probably someone like Semtex (even though they wouldn’t fight) and A.J. Georges by complete tooling.

’Ardy is going to tag GSP early in round 1, after which GSP will revert to his “safe GnP.”

by P-Dub on Jan 25, 2010 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Nah dude

Hardy is legit but young. Fitch would hump a decsion but would get tagged all other the place. And if burns was able to go 3 rounds twice vs AJ then he ain’t shir. Hardy and any other decnt ww would ko him

by Synyster_08 on Jan 25, 2010 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

Burns never went 3 rounds with Rumble. The first was stopped by TKO due to eye pokes, the second ended with Pokey getting knocked stupid with a huge head kick.

To me, saying they went three rounds in a non-title fight means it went to decision. Both went into the third round, just not three full rounds.

I am sure it was taken out of context...

I bet he was asked the question of what he thought and he answered and you are only seeing a part of the interview. Nate is a pretty respectable guy overall. He isn’t talking shit either. He game him mad props and says he will be more then likely be a great fighter in the future but at this moment he is still a little young and inexperienced. I know he has a bunch of fights, but I am talking about big show A class experience.

Yes please, not another BJ Penn debacle!

Bj talked so much junk before their rematch and then looked so foolish because he couldn’t back it up, quitting in his corner. Hopefully Hardy isn’t going to be a Penn repeat. But it won’t matter if he’s talking trash or humble as a monk because he has nothing more than a puncher’s chance and it’s a slim one at that.

We're undefeated VS you guys...

War of 1812, you know? smirk

Size matters, but I like the chances of Ontario vs. the fattest state in the US in a physical matchup. Sure, you come out throwing bombs, but by the mid first round you’re winded, need to get cooled off in your SUV and the Ontarians are venting the pent up rage of seeing the Maple Leafs suck for 50 years on Texas’ obese backside…

And if you think that Canadians don’t know how to handle a rifle or that your big cities have a corner on tough gang shootings, you don’t read much Toronto news…

AND, my friends that drink would smack me with a 2-4 if I didn’t say that our beer would smoke yours…

Personally, I’m thankful Dubya’s not in office anymore, because after Afghanistan, I think Canada was looking pretty choice as an invasion site. :) That was one Texan NO one had a game plan for.

Usually if I don't care about either guy then I don't pick a favourite at the start

I’m happy to cheer for an English guy if they do well or seem to be a likeable person but they can’t expect me to support them just because I’m from the same country as them. If they’re from the same area as me then I might be swayed but I’m more bothered about personality and performance for unknown newcomers than nationality.

Don’t bet on him though, unless it’s only a small amount as Dan has very little chance at winning this fight and it would be a waste of money betting on him. I’ll be cheering him on but I’m not daft enough to bet against GSP.

To be fair both Dan and Paul train abroad

Hardy does a lot of work at 10th Planet and at the Wild Card gym, so he is developing his boxing and BJJ skills in proper camps in the US. Semtex also spends a lot of time in Holland training in top secret with quality strikers over there. Rough House are a pretty good camp and are getting the best out of both of them right now, unlike Bisping the Rough House lads don’t totally rely on training in the UK and they actually have some good trainers and cornermen.

Hardy

will not give GSP the same problems Alves or Fitch gave him. Those were really tough fights for GSP. I think tis will be more like a training session/practise round for him. This fight will not get out of the 2nd round. I think GSP is going to demoilsh Dan Hardy as a matter of fact this might be the fight that gets Dan to quit talking so much shit before his fights. Matt Hughes, Kos and BJ Penn all talked trash before there fights with George and he killed all of them brutally. BJ doesnt talk trash anymore he just goes out and dominates guys now, he should thank GSP for that beating.

by StringBeanRickJamesLookinFool on Jan 25, 2010 11:54 AM EST reply actions

I dont think anyone likes getting punched in the face,

its unnatural. Thats why strikers dont fair to well in MMA, you need ground game. If you think this fight is going the distance your on crack dude. GSP is going to make an example out of Dan Hardy, I will go as far as to say this will be the worst beating GSP has put on anyone. I will admitt that strikers without ground game always have a chance at that lucky punch, but thats all it is lucky, it has nothing to do with being a good fighter or having skill.

by HEELHOOK on Jan 25, 2010 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

yeah but...

its a fight. its part of what they train for. i also hate hearing the term lucky punch. if a fighter throws it, its because they mean to connect with it. if there was anyone as big as GSP in the ww division who has good jits off their back, then maybe GSP would get challenged.

by StringBeanRickJamesLookinFool on Jan 25, 2010 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

I hate the phrases lucky punch or puncher's chance as well

It’s really annoying when people say that about quality strikers, unless they only have power and have no technique or sense of timing in their strikes then those terms are meaningless, generic and disrespectful. It always seems like a cop out and a way of excusing a disappointing defeat. If Dan Hardy lands a good punch then there’s nothing lucky about it, all it does is show off his skills as a fighter because he was able to land a powerful punch at the right time and he was able to prevent his opponent from putting him at a disadvantageous position that would neutralise his striking.

by Newfie3 on Jan 25, 2010 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

I remember when...

GSP was an awesome striker, thanks Serra – you’ve created Matt Hughes mkII :(

Not that GSP isn’t awesome, he does what he needs to do to win – I just miss the more exciting part of his game that he was also pretty much the best in his division at.

I think the refs do need to start standing fights up faster or moving them off the cage if we aren’t to see more Couture/Vera main events, the rest of that card was great but if the sport is to keep growing they will need to make sure there aren’t too many wrestling matches where the winner is the one who hugs the other out of fighting. A little off topic I know.

I think Hardy is better than most think, like Semtex he’s got a lot of fights under his belt for his age and you don’t do that just by luck – even if the opponents weren’t A-level.

yikes

Nate called it 1st ladies and gentleman! George is gonna kill him. Not even fair. Hardy wins a decision over Swick! big deal! Swick wouldnt stand a chance either. Daley is the only legit contender who hasnt already fought GSP. Alves tried, Fitch tried, KOS tried a while ago like Fitch. No chance for any of them. Looking forward to GSP moving up to MW and becoming a top 5 contender. Not #1 but theres a potential #2 spot for him.

I agree with nate

Ardy IS a B level fighter imo. He didn’t dominate swick,bs, he had 3 relatively close decisions in his last 4 fights. 2 split decisions over nobodies, and a close fight with a pathetic looking swick, looking like he did with his first fight at welter weight. Gsp dominated alves and destroyed fitch, owned bj f-ing penn, on paper hardy is a poor match up with gsp. Gsp is no fool, if alves couldn’t even rock him in 5 rounds, bj couldn’t in 7 rounds…bloodied him though, I really doubt hardy will, both alves and bj are better strikers than him. The only guy who rocked him was someone without one previous tko to there record and now gsp has no chin….serra exposed him..f off. In 21 freaking fights gsp was only rocked once in I don’t know how many rounds, if you actually watch his fights carefully he outstrikes almost everyone. I saw the first bj penn fight again and was surprised at how many times gsp hit penn, even in the first round, kicked his legs so hard he swung around, they couldn’t stop talking about the blood…from his nose and the eye jab. Some peoples faces bruise or cut much easier than others, penn has one of those faces, a bat probably wouldn’t mark him. Ardy does have a punchers chance but in my opinion he’ll have less of a chance than serra did, gsp wanted to finish serra early and had no fear of his stand up and was over confident and sloppy, he sure as hell won’t do that with hardy. I think gsp will sub hardy with in the first 3 rounds or tko him, hardy won’t even come close to catching him.
