UFC Quick Quote: Christmas coming late for the Coleman clan

Mark-coleman2_medium

"I have had a great training camp and this is going to be one hell of a fight because he is one of the best ever in my opinion and he is very mentally tough; which is one of the most important things in this sport and I actually think that is his best attribute. But like I said I've had a great training camp and I fully expect to win this fight.... It has been excellent out here and it really helps for me to get away from all the distractions that I would have had if I would have stayed in Columbus, Ohio. Since I got [to Las Vegas], when I am not at the gym training I come back to my hotel room and close the curtains and just concentrate on this fight....it is almost like my cave. For the last 50 days I go from my hotel room to the gym and then from the gym to my hotel room, I even had to cancel Christmas this year. I will celebrate Christmas with my kids when this fight is over but for right now it's all about taking care of business.... I believe that this is the biggest fight I have ever been in. I realize how big of a fight this is and how important it is to my career.  For me this fight couldn't be any bigger and I need to come out with the victory."

-- Former UFC heavyweight champion Mark Coleman talks to PunchDrunkGamer.com about the numerous sacrifices he has made to ensure that he is in top form for Randy Couture at UFC 109: "Relentless" on Feb. 6. In fact, "The Hammer" canceled Christmas in Columbus so he could concentrate 100 percent on what he refers to as the biggest fight of his career. Can an in-shape Coleman, 45, defy the odds -- and Father Time -- once again and actually make a run at the light heavyweight title in 2010 or is he simply too far along in his career to hand with anyone in the upper echelon of the division?

Fedor was originally cast as the main character in 24, but was replaced by the producers when he managed to kill every terrorist and save the day in 12 minutes and 37 seconds

Honestly...

I don’t see what the big deal is, the kids live with the guy; they seen him go from injured to healed and he’s tellin them the whole time that he’s fine. Maybe if he got carried out on a stretcher and everyone thought he was gonna die; but it’s just some swelling and a little blood.

On the fight; by mid 2nd rd Coleman’s gassed and Randy will still be breathing through his nose and not missing a beat.

I've seen some pretty F*d up sh!t

when I was a kid some big dumb rednecked decked my grandmother in the mouth; blood everywhere fake teeth on the floor, much worse than seeing a sanctioned bout between two professionals. Maybe it’s just me, but yea it’s a memory I probably won’t forget but the image isn’t “burned into my mind” forever and tormenting me everyday.

That doesn't change the fact

That I know how I am; and IMO it’s perfectly fine for a father to take his own children to watch him “work” and explain to them in a controlled, professional environment exactly what is going on and exactly what is happening. I bet they went out, had dinner and once they saw that he was talking/walking/and acting fine (minus being dissapointed that he didn’t win) they were probably the better for the entire experience!

And kevin has a pretty good point; so in all his other fights when he gets busted up he doesn’t go home and see his kids all the sudden?

but its like your telling someone thats been to iraq and seen people killed you can handle it and youve never been there… When you have kids you have different feelings. O’Damn is living his life watching other people raise their kids for many many years, and has an idea of how he would raise his own kids…. if Coleman handles it all appropriately during and afterwards, then it’s all good…… it’s not like seeing a violent crime…. MMA is a sport ’’’and he’s teaching his kids to understand it.

The crazy thing here is..

You guys are talkin about this emotional bond that suddenly developes the second a child is born; but not taking into account the millions of abandoned children/single mothers out there.. My only point was not everyone reacts the same way, has the same morals etc. I’d go as far as to say some people feel the exact opposite and feel burdened by their children and probably even resent them. I’m not saying that I’m like that either but to tell me how I would react or what I would do when you guys only know me as text on a blog site is pretty arrogant imo.

Handy is not one of the best ever

Not even close.
Lets be honest here, the reason why he’s anything special is that he’s old.

We can all agree on that right?

by Lester The Pimp on Jan 22, 2010 2:53 PM EST reply actions

yes, 100% correct

he’s the only “legend” i know with a 16-10 (give or take) record!

by kevjack115 on Jan 22, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

That’s pretty much it. His legend status derives from winning despite his old age, rather than his accomplishments themselves.

I think the real myth surrounding randy has to do with his comeback against Sylvia and GG, which in retrospect aren’t all that impressive.

they're blown out of context due to the UFC marketing machine...but I can't blame them for that

Fedor was originally cast as the main character in 24, but was replaced by the producers when he managed to kill every terrorist and save the day in 12 minutes and 37 seconds

Nah, Randy's a legend because he's made a career out of winning fights he wasn't supposed to

He was expected and at times supposed to lose to some of the top LHWs and HWs yet shocked the world. He did it against Vitor, Rizzo, Chuck and Tito nevermind his successful comeback at HW. I have a lot of respect for Randy, he’s continued proving everyone time and time again and whilst not having the best record has faced top fighters (and beaten them to win titles) from 2 different weight classes when he’s usually been giving up size and age. Sure his last fight may have sucked and been a poor decision but I’m not going to stop liking him because of that. He shouldn’t be anywhere near title contention at this point but I’ll still be cheering for him against Coleman.

David, that’s kinda my point. 90% of his fame is the shock value of him beating younger fighters when everyone thought he was just an old man. I don’t rate any of his winds that highly Tito is/always was a joke, Chuck was OK but he lost 2/3, Rizzo is meh, Vitor folds against every wrestler, big deal.

Randy was the first guy to beat Vitor, Rizzo was a killer when Randy beat him twice, Tito was the unstoppable champion when Randy clowned him and Chuck was supposed to be the guy that would dominate MMA when Randy beat him

All of these guys were legitimate fighters when Randy beat them and all of them were promoted much more by the UFC as they were supposed to become the faces of the organisation until Randy whupped their arses. Whilst Vitor is the only relevant fighter at 2010 (and that’s at MW) wins over them 4 in those days was a huge deal, you can’t dismiss his victories over young Brazilian HW killers or over 2 quality LHWs in their prime, that’s just plain revisionism.

naw, Randy’s fighting a new generation of fighters today. The conditions for becoming a good MMA fighter today are much better after the UFC became popular in 2004 when Randy was already 40.

Nicely stated argument David. I’m still not a big Randy fan and never will be unless he fights Big Poopy again, but I have to respect your opinion of him. That said, I still don’t think he’ll deserve a title shot with a win over Coleman unless maybe if he totally dominates and finishes, but I do think he’ll get one.

The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful

He doesn't deserve one at all by beating Vera and Coleman

However, I don’t agree with talking down about Randy’s past wins as they were huge at the time and it’d be wrong to discredit them now because these fighters aren’t as good as they were in their prime when Randy beat them (aside from Vitor of course).

i have no qualms about looking at history in the context of the present. “They were considered legitimate at the time”—True, but they never were. It’s not that they’ve gotten so much worse, it’s just that they’ve been exposed for the caliber of fighter they truly were/are. Tito=unstoppable champion??? lmao classic example of an opponent who was considered legitimate but really sucked. Tito WAS NEVER good,no matter how “legitimate” he was considered at the time. OK, he was the first to beat Belfort, but ANY wrestler could have done that. He should have lost the first decision to Rizzo (that was probably his best early win, but I consider rizzo in about the same league as Kongo).

you consider Rizzo in the same leage as Kongo? dude Kongo had barely even started his career when Rizzo was on top. They were the best of their time and then when the sport got popular more guys got into it. You can say Tito was never good, but dude the guy has gotten old and gone through a career full of injuries, still he had Forrest and Rashad beat so he was never out of the top 30 like u make it sound. It’s easy to clank down on these guys now but their prime was when the sport hadn’t taken off, the standard quality of fighters today will be much different in 5 years.

Agreed RoB

Frosnt, Tito and Chuck at the time that Randy beat them were the 2 best LHWs in the UFC. Rizzo and Vitor at the time that Randy beat them were seemingly unstoppable young HW strikers that were expected to crush him. Yes the sport has evolved now but at the time these wins were huge for Randy, it’d be like bashing the top fighters of today in 5 years time for winning big fights they weren’t expected to.

Anyone else think....

Coleman will have a huge meltdown if he loses… That guy has a lot of emotion in him and I think he is not going to handle a loss well…. Just what I think.

He flipped out in the past after losing a fight didnt he? If Randy wins by decision I can see this freakout being worse.

Can’t be good on your mental state to miss Christmas with your kids for a fight and then lose.

not like the meltdown he had in pride after losing to Fedor...that was an pic meltdown due to the roids he was taking no doubt

I guess if theres no roid rage maybe he will be mellow

That's one of the funniest things that I've ever seen

Roid head Coleman was trying to look big and hard by going crazy then you just see Fedor walking around calmly and thanking a fan in English (limited but at least he tried) then planning to drink vodka with Randleman. Classic clip, it showed everything great about Fedor and everything wrong with Coleman.

No Matter What All You Say

That is still a really sad picture, and whether its his profession or not, it must still be heartbreaking for two little girls to see their father get beat up so badly. Anyone who disagrees is ignorant.

I just think when they hold their OWN child for that first time then it will sink in.....

No matter how close you think you are to maybe a niece or nephew or whatever the case, or if you think you have the credentials to be a good father, that all goes out the window when the actual day comes and you feel something you’ve never felt before, then I guarantee your whole out-look on everything will change.
