UFC Quick Quote: Frankie Edgar 'super excited' to have a shot at BJ Penn

Edgar2450_medium

"I'm super excited. I'm glad I got my shot. I'm looking forward to seizing the opportunity. BJ looked great [at UFC 107]. His timing is unmatched. Diego had a game-plan and got rocked and it was tough to go back to the game plan. I'm working hard all the time (with Ricardo Almeida). Renzo is training now. He's getting ready for his fight. I can't get a better situation to get better at jiu-jitsu. I know (Georges St. Pierre) comes into the city and trains with Renzo. If we cross paths, then I'll pick his brain a little bit."

UFC lightweight number one contender Frankie Edgar talks to Ground and Pound Radio (via Heavy.com) about preparing for the moment he's been waiting for since the day he started competing in mixed martial arts, hoping he has "The Answer" for current division kingpin BJ Penn at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi. "The Prodigy" has been unstoppable since returning to the lightweight division in 2007, finishing all five of his victims and never looking the least bit challenged in any of those contests. Will his title defense on April 10 be his last before trying his luck again at welterweight? Or can Edgar shock the world? Thoughts?

Can't see

a single way Edgar gets the W in this.

Florian would finish edgar easily

and anyone but bj penn in the lightweight divison. the question is who can beat BJ Penn!!
thats the real question.. who cares who gets a shot..
joe silva needs to make a list to who fights bj next, and not rank them by wins

by mikeybear32 on Jan 21, 2010 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

edgar needs to take all grappling out of his head

this fight will NOT hit the ground. edgar can’t take him down and bj wont take edgar down. the only way for him to beat bj is to use angles, speed, and footwork to try to outpoint bj on his feet. edgar i believe has the best match up to beat bj with the things i listed above. hes still a huge underdog but who isn’t at lw?

by sac165 on Jan 21, 2010 6:37 PM EST up reply actions

good post sac

I totally agree. BJ is the king, and i’m not a fan of his so it kills me to say it……but he is the best by far. There is not a single fighter in this division that has much of a shot against BJ….having said that, i agree that edgar matches up as good as anyone. I consider Edgar’s stand up as the best in the division (next to BJ.) He’s a crisp striker, he has awesome head movement, he stays in the pocket, and he’s extremely comfortable on his feet. BJ is probably a better striker, but Edgar can stand with him, and if he stays really busy, it’s conceivable that he could “outpoint” BJ. Again, it’s not likely, but if there was ever a way for BJ to lose, it would be from being outworked and outpointed. This will be an entertaining fight.

As far as Edgar and Florian, give me a break!!!! Edgar would rip right thru Florian. Diego will too. Florian’s a good fighter, but he’s not that good.

by kg12 on Jan 22, 2010 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

Florian wouldn’t finish edgar, no way, I’m curious to see how bj stops him, my guess rnc in 3rd

The only way this goes three rounds is if BJ toys with Edgar for amusement.

The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful

by P-Dub on Jan 21, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

its reall possible it goes 3

Edgar is tough they’re gonna box for a while, I’m sure penn will do more damage, But edgar has movement and speed to last a few rds. I think edgar gets frustrated tries to take bj down and bj uses his skill to work a submission. I don’t think bj will ko him, but nothing is impossible.

by Phenomenal Angel on Jan 21, 2010 9:06 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah, I would have to agree. I think people are really underestimating Edgar, and it surprises me that people are foolish enough to say he has “nothing to offer.” That’s a very dangerous assumption to make. Yeah, the odds may be against Frankie, but like you said, nothing is impossible. Frankie could surprise a lot of people.

by - Ella on Jan 21, 2010 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

I can see this fight lasting

I can’t see him winning or quitting. Edgar is a really tough kid. It wouldn’t surprise me if this fight went to a decision. But I’m sure BJ’s game plan will be the same- dismantle him on his feet then rnc.

but as weird as it is, will still like serra just as much along with edgar, maybe thats why im so for him to win

by CanadianSensation on Jan 21, 2010 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

I like Serra

He’s one of the smartest coaches I’ve seen. And he’s a genuinely nice guy. He got his feathers ruffled a little bit during the GSP/Serra thing, but he was right to do so.

Serra is alright in my books, not sure I’d have a picture of him celebrating a victory of GSP in my profile, but he’s a great dude.

Just mentioning GSP in the build up to the fight

Is enough to sign your losers cheque as it will boil BJ’s piss and motivate him to train properly. Florian did it (even tried to mimic his strategy) and failed epically….

by Shoguns Hairy Forearms. on Jan 21, 2010 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

so what are you saying?

if he didnt mention gsp he wouldnt be training properly to begin with?

by CanadianSensation on Jan 21, 2010 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

History

tells you BJ has a habit of being lazy, even as recently as GSP II (watch the PrimeTime)

He may well have changed his ways recently but Edgar is not a threat to BJ in anyway and it wouldn’t surprise me to see BJ train lighter for this fight, But once you start saying you’re gonna have GSP give you tips it’ll certainly focus him if he wasn’t.

by Shoguns Hairy Forearms. on Jan 21, 2010 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

BJ doesn't need to train hard to beat Frankie Edgar

Frankie will be one of the worst under dogs in the history of MMA. He has absolutley nothing to offer BJ. Nothing.

Diego had a plan and got rocked — this seems to get lost with all the Penn gonad nuzling. There is no doubt of the giftedness off Penn, but good fighters continue to get better. I’m not saying that Frankie is going to win, but too much is taken for granted from the Diego fight when Diego had the wrong plan and made Penn look like the second coming. Frankie will be a true acid test for Penn. Having said all this, Penn may not always be the most motivated, but he is one of the toughest fighters in MMA. Frankies only chance is to out point him.

by TapedUpPair on Jan 21, 2010 7:05 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Beat B4 he started

Diego could take him down and could hang with him on the feet. What else could he do? Florian couldn’t.

GSP could but Frankie ain’t GSP!

IMO – Diego should of mixed more kicks and come in on different angles with his punches. BJ said after the fight that he keyed on Diego’s right hand and baited him to throw it. In short, Diego was two predictable. You need to change your patterns of attack with BJ. Look at the later rounds of the GSP fight. GSP. Slowed down BJ, we all know this, it is what he did after he slowed him down is what Frankie needs to focus on.

by TapedUpPair on Jan 21, 2010 7:25 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah but

GSP was mixing take downs in with his striking in the late rounds. Frankie can’t take BJ down, or tire him out.

martial arts is about technique over size and strength. While strength and speed are great, technique will always overcome it.-FuckerDave 01/19/10

by jay. on Jan 21, 2010 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

And the takedown is what florian and sanchez became overly enchanted with. How about mixing in leg kicks for a couple of rounds to slow down Penn’s footwork. Penn’s footwork sets up the punches. I think you get Penn thinking low for 12 minutes and stay on the outside. If Frankie can keep it moving and slow down Penn’s legs he may be able to Go in high and sneak in the late round superman punch and do enough to out point him. Trying to stand and go in for the take down is plane stupid.

by TapedUpPair on Jan 21, 2010 8:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

It is stupid for any LW's to try grappling with BJ

Even if they did somehow get him down(doubt it’s possible) he’ll either pop right back up or own them down there. You’re right, the best thing to do is mix up the striking on him. Leg kicks might work on him, but the punishment you will take trying to kick him might make it a bad trade off. Man, I hate BJ and have had nothing but good things to say about him for the past week. I hope he calls out GSP again soon. People might start to think I like him. lol

I hear you about bj. I am surprised Adam g has not made a surprise reappearance to give me some grief. I am afraid to admit, after 107, I became a fan.

I was a BJ fan before he called GSP a cheat and refused to fight in Manchester

Still I always end up cheering for him when his music hits and I can’t deny that the man is a legend. I would be a huge fan if he didn’t say such stupid things at times, but I am still a huge fan of his fights and performances if not the person.

He bitched about not getting his PPV bonus after UFC 80 and said that he's not fighting on the UK again

Him and Diego were supposed to replace Wandi-Bisping as the main event but neither of them wanted to fight here again.

This isn’t even going to be a contest! Edgar is going to get WORKED and there’s nothing he can do about it!

by Sofa-King-Toasty on Jan 21, 2010 10:02 PM EST via mobile reply actions

My thoughts.

Frankie has balls just for stepping in the cage with BJ. I think he loses in the second or early third. But i like the kid. My guess is this ends as BJ hurts Frankie on the feet and then frankie shoots, get stuffed and from there gets TKO’d quickly thereafter.

by GreenThumb on Jan 21, 2010 10:56 PM EST reply actions

First off..

The only real thing Frankie can bring to the table to be able to hang with Penn is his boxing. Jiu-Jitsu training will have nothing to do with this fight, and if it does it will be because he’s trying to save himself from a bad situation. However, BJ Penn is the best or second best pound for pound fighter in the world. His new dedication to the sport and his legacy has him at his best and I really do see BJ holding both LW and WW belts at the same time at some point in the future. He’s the most well rounded fighter and he actually finishes his top ranked division opponents, unlike GSP who hasnt finished a legitimate WW in over 2 years, ala Matt Hughes. Frankie Edgar is also very undersized for this class. He actually could be very effective at a drop to 145. Even if BJ isn’t out boxing Frankie, I believe he’ll take him down and submit him.

WAR PENN.

I like Edgar even tho I think there's no chance in hell he pulls this off

I hope he puts up a gud ass fite & I no he’ll kick most of the Lw’s ass out ther! I still can’t believe he beat sherk! & the fight with Tyson griffin was awsome.

by d*locc on Jan 21, 2010 11:47 PM EST reply actions

Edgar is a great fighter, I like him alot.

I just think BJ will be to big for him. Remeber what Maynard did to him and BJ is way better than the Bully!!!!

by HEELHOOK on Jan 22, 2010 9:01 AM EST reply actions

wow

I think bj is gonna lose this fight cuz he is soo sore from all this nut hugging going on. For any of you to say that Frankie has nothing to offer bj is plain ignorant. The same way he beat Sherk is wut he needs to do in this fight. His boxing is wut he has to Bring to the table and mixing alittle wrestling if this goes into the later rounds. That will be his best gameplan.
