UFC Quick Quote: Patrick Cote ready to rematch Anderson Silva and become world champion

Patrick-cote-anderson-silva-ufc90_medium

Props: TheMMANews

Quoteworthy:

"If I fight (Anderson Silva) again I think I am going to do the same thing, I think I learned that if you’re not scared of him right away you have a good chance to win and that’s what I did. I was there in the first second of the fight, I took the center of the Octagon and I showed him I wasn’t scared of him. This guy is not a machine; he is a human like me and you, so you have to believe in yourself. The worst part of fighting Anderson Silva is that it’s so hard finding training partners like him, nobody moves like him and nobody fights like him. So if I fight him again the surprise aspect of how he moves and how he fights is not going to be a surprise anymore, I know him and how it feels to be in the same Octagon with him, so that is going to be a huge advantage for me. I want big fights all the time. I don’t do this sport to be number 2, to be second, I want to be world champion -- I think I have the ability to be world champion."

Patrick Cote talks about getting back into the middleweight mix when he faces Alan Belcher at UFC 113 in Montreal. "The Predator" has not competed since since shredding his knee while inside the Octagon opposite reigning division champion Anderson Silva at UFC 90 way back in October 2008. The bout resulted in a technical knockout loss for the Canadian, which he feels may have gone his way if the freak accident never happened. The 185-pound class is now teeming with possible title contenders, making his road back to the summit more than likely a long and difficult one. He wants a rematch with "The Spider" but has to get past "The Talent" first. What are his chances?

He didn't land anything on Silva...

So yeah, he’ll do the same thing except Silva would toy with him this time like he did the 1st time. Cote is a d-bag who really thinks he gave a good fight.

come on man give him some credit

it was a brutal boring fight, but cote took some serious shots from Anderson and didnt flinch. look at how forrest reacted to getting hit by anderson. dropped in a heart beat. cote has a serious chin and the heart of a warrior

I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.

I'm not saying Cote doesn't have a good chin or heart...

It just seemed like he just rode out the rounds, content to let Silva dance around and throw pot-shots at him. He never really mounted any type of offense.

Guys do what they can to win.

Who would be dumb enough to go all in against what is in my opinion the very best counter stiker in MMA History (among other things)? Cote was smarter than Griffin in that regard but he was no Letes either. He faced him. Would you have more respect for Cote today had he pulled a Griffin that night? Not me.

by Yan117 on Jan 21, 2010 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

Cote did nothing but survive that fight and judging by his reactions that was what he was aiming for. That fight would have gone to a decision as Andy isn’t stupid enough to get wreckless against a guy with the punching power and rock hard chin of Cote whilst Patrick never does anything in big fights, look at how boring the Smith and Almeida fights were as proof of that.

Yea, but did he have any success?

No! Cote did nothing the whole fight. He was totally scared of Silva regardless of what he says. He did nothing to attack and as a result Silva was content to stand on the outside and pick his shots. Granted Silva did very little, but Cote wasn’t in the fight for a second.

But he didn’t run away. He always walked forward. He just isn’t good enough to stand with AS, no shame in that.

the size difference was significant, Cote is actually one of the better boxer’s AS has fought in the UFC if not the best, he moves well and doesn’t leave any big openings like say Forrest G. would be cool to see Cote vs Karaev they have the same style (even though Ruslan would knock him out since he’s much bigger and ofc better)

I watched the replay of it last night...

I was rather suprised how well he took shots. That Anderson is so different then the current AS. He was pretty falt footed in the begining of the fight and even when he got back to his feet. That really loose dodging and weaving AS was not their at all.

I think Anderson could take that fight to the ground and easily submit Cote. Lutter and Doerksen submitted him. While he may not be on Lutter level of BJJ, with all the ADCC and Pan Am credentials, I think he could catch Cote on the ground.

Why did the give Anderson the yellow card, when Newton was the one just sitting in his guard not advancing or doing anything to improve his position

Belcher isn't a gimme

But Belcher folds to good shots. The only thing Belcher can do to stop this fight is a sub. I don’t think that is what Belcher will plan on doing. Belcher might win a decision, but I think Cote will catch him some time in that 15 minutes. Cote is fighting in Montreal for the first time(in the UFC). That adrenaline will be enough to cancel out the rust. If I’m wrong you guys can make my sig and pic whatever you want for one month.

Jay, Cote did nothing that fight

He never engages in big fights, he did nothing against Smith or Almeida and scraped boring decision wins against them. He has a lot of heart and the hardest chin in MMA but he didn’t do anything to trouble Andy and was content to survive. The fact that he injured himself proves to me how woefully out of his depth the guy was. Belcher will beat Cote anyway so any talk of a rematch with Andy is irrelevant at this point.

Besides...

185 has a couple decent prospects for contenders; Marquardt, Belfort and Wanderlei (assuming he can get by Bisping and then get 2 more wins); all better challengers for Silva than Cote IMO. PPV buys says all 3 of those guys get a shot before Cote gets a rematch. And yea yea; before ppl start ragging on Wandy, I know I know, but if he beats Bisping and doesn’t have to rematch Belfort or fight Marquardt he could probably rack up two more wins against someone like Akiyama, Sonnen, Okami or Palhares to justify the title shot.

Jay I like you and I agree with most of your posts but your hatred for Andy and love of Cote is clouding your judgement on this one. by PHISH NATION on Jan 21, 2010 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

No, never!

First of all… he had 4 straight losses in the UFC. Really wierd that he didnt get cut! Second: look at the guys he lost to, Doerksen, Leben and Lutter. Im not counting Ortiz cause it was at 205 and on short notice. He’s ground game is terrible and he will continue to loose to ANYBODY with BJJ skills AND just a little bit of wrestling (unlike Almeida). I truly honestly from the bottom of my heart hate Shields but yeah, he would not only win against Cote but also finish him with a sub. Third. Look att the wins on his records: He was handfed strikers just for the entertainment value after his losses. Scott smith, grove and mcfedries? and then almeida = nr 1 contender and nr 2 in his mind and nr 6-7 on your 185p list? third: Akiyama, Maia, Okami??? And Palhares would get him to the ground and OWN him (even though he’s not a top 15 in my book either). I dont get his hype, at all. I dont write so often here, but the Cote thing really pisses me off. People bash on Kongo and Guillard for being 1 dimensional strikers. But Cote is 1 dimenstional and not even good at that!?! Over & out…

by jay. on Jan 21, 2010 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

Doerksen subbed him too...

And also his wins over McFedries and Almeida are both kind of tarnished. McFedries mother was murdered very close to that fight! He didnt train for the fight, wasnt in the cage mentallt and just gave up! he said in a an interview that he wouldnt have taken the fight if he didnt really need the money) and Almeida was coming off a long lay-off and gassed badly!

I never bash fighters, but Cote is just an average striker who got his title for the wrong reasons and gets to act all tough and “couldve shouldve wouldve” cause he blew his knee against Silva. And people buy in to that and believe the hype… that seems to be all that people remember. Unfinished business BS. Silva was bored the first time, dont need to make a sequal!

by Zlatan, My Hero on Jan 21, 2010 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

Hmmm

I didn’t know any of that about MacFedries. I don’t think the outcome would have been any different. I see what you are getting at. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens to Cote from here on out. Good educated point of view though, Zlatan. Much better than the usual bashing of Cote, much.

I don’t mind a good point of view like yours, I will still stand behind Cote no matter what though. I know he’ll never be the UFC champ, but he is a good fighter. Tough as nails and impossible to KO. Plus one hell of a human being.

Cote was a top 10 prior to him going down, but imo. he was just starting to break into the top 10. He hasn’t exactly beaten anyone worthy of him joining the top 10 honestly. With a win over Belchar, I might consider him for #10, it would depend on how impressive he wins.

OJR : No Sonnen on your list? He had a huge win over Okami and you’ve got Yushin up there.

I LOVE WANDI, but he too hasn’t done anything at 185 worthy of him being top 10, a win over bisping might get him into the UFC top 10 MW, but lets face it Wandi isn’t the same Wandi (in his head he’s still the axe murderer), we all know if life everyone slows down, especially with Wanis style.

Uh... k

At no point was Cote even close to beating Anderson. Everyone saw that. If he rushed forward, Anderson tagged him. If he tried to get inside, Anderson tagged him. In short, Anderson was dominating just by counter-striking. Pointless rematch imo. Also there’s a fair amount of guys higher ranked than Cote simply because of activity. His absence has definitely caused him to drop out of the top 10 (not his fault).

Cote had the same gamplan againast Silva, as Rua did against Machida.

Both fights were boring, but both were looking for their openings to make the champ regret coming after them.

Everyone rags on Cote for not going after him more; we he oviously had a seriously damaged knee going into the fight, otherwise it wouldn’t have blown out like that.

Machida-Shogun was anything but boring, just because it was a close technical fight and not a brawl doesn't make it boring

Tough shit if Cote was already injured, if you can’t get healthy for a title fight then you obviously did something wrong in training. I actually don’t mind Cote but I’m not going to give him credit for getting picked apart for 2 rounds and not landing anything then collapsing in a heap on the floor.

Sorry let me rephrase that

Rua vx Machida was a great display of technical striking. Was it a slug fest, or a back and forth battle like what the general public prefer, no.

I for one loved both fights, as neither wanted to fall into the others trap. And when you have strikers that good you have to respect that.

everyone LOVES Wandi, but use your head not your heart. Wandi can still give anyone a go, but what has he even down at 185 in God knows how long to be considered a top 10.

Can he be a top 10? He obviously can’t be on it yet, but he will be soon.

Bonus points forsure!

Personally, I don’t have Bisping as a top 10 fighter and I feel in order to be a top 10 fighter you need to beat one. Wandi’s special though, he has done a lot, so it would really be debatable on his performance if he’s top 10 or not.

Cote would cut off the ring and make Bisping fight him. Not a good scenario for Bisping.

Nationalism blinds

Bisping only been stopped once and has fought similar C and B level competition as Cote (excluding Hendo and Silva respectively) . Cote been beaten by some real cans, at least Bisping can say he’s been beat once and that was by a good fighter!

This clown/‘jabroni’ (yeah, i said it) claims he wants to be World champ and can beat AS but has more chance of waking up with ovaries….

I appreciate he Canadian and so are most of you guys saying how good he is but……

by Shoguns Hairy Forearms. on Jan 21, 2010 4:31 PM EST reply actions

I agree with he won't ever beat AS. He'll never even get the chance to try.

But he is levels above Bisping. Everyone wants to be world champ, I guess this whole sport is filled with clowns.

No issue with wanting to be a world champ

But in 2010 you need more than a strong chin and a strong punch to be a world champ in the UFC. If you think that those attribute alone give you the ability to be world champ then you are a clown.

by Shoguns Hairy Forearms. on Jan 21, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

He was one punch away from doing that a year ago

He also has good defensive wrestling. Brett Rogers almost won the WAMMA belt with those exact same attributes. I know what you mean though, but it can still be done.

Good comparison

But I still feel the difference is that Rogers pressed that fight (and payed for it ultimately) whereas Cote didn’t really because of Silvas desire to act like Bruce Lee….

by Shoguns Hairy Forearms. on Jan 21, 2010 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah but Rogers didn't have to chase Fedor

Fedor doesn’t dance.

Are you a fan of Shogun or not? I know it is off topic, but I can’t figure out if you like him or not, with that handle.

Fedor does dance....Bellydance

In my humble opinion, Shogun is the greatest and most complete MMA fighter the world has seen. I know most would disagree with that but to me he has everything and he’s even better now than he was in Pride because he fights with much more discipline and strategy.

by Shoguns Hairy Forearms. on Jan 21, 2010 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

I'm starting to believe again

He always was the best IMO. After the surgeries and losing to Forrest, I thought he might be done. He is making a great recovery. I almost have him back at Pride levels. Maybe even better.

Not many people can argue the awesomeness of Shogun, I would try because I’m not a fan, but it would be a feeble attempt.

Gas tank

I still feel sick watching the Forrest fight. I still cry tears of laughter at Coleman I & II (for varying reasons!) and I still watch in awe at every other fight. even his early fights in Brazil against the likes of Santos are amazing.

Scary thing is that he’s only just turned 28. If he can keep himself injury free and keep his restored cardio then the LHW belt will be his.

True, he is still young and can dominate 205 for many, many years to come

That’s the beauty of the whole thing.

I remember thinking that Ninja looked better

for a couple of years and surely thought the same thing with regard to Shogun and his medical issues.

but i agree

Shogun is looking very complete. If he can stay healthy which looks pretty certain I think he could beat anyone on any given night. Nobody would be safe.

Silva is just better

Cote is a tough fighter but I think Silva is on anther level. Cote was doing alright his first fight but I still had Anderson winning. if they fight again Cote would get TKO!!!

KO

They aren’t even in the same league. I can’t believe some people on here are actually talking about Patrick Cote and Anderson Silva as if they are comparable fighters. It’s like comparing Chris Leben, Bisping, Chael Sonnen, Alan Belcher etc etc with AS…..Joke

by Shoguns Hairy Forearms. on Jan 21, 2010 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

You might want to re-read this thread

Nobody said Cote is on the same level with Silva. He didn’t run from Silva, and he pressed the action in their fight. Not even close to what you say.

martial arts is about technique over size and strength. While strength and speed are great, technique will always overcome it.-FuckerDave 01/19/10

by jay. on Jan 21, 2010 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

I was refering to their fight

People are comparing them based on a fight which AS decided to breakdance through. You say Cote pressed the action and didn’t run etc like most on here.

The facts were, Silva never chose to really engage in the fight(for whatever reason) which maybe gave the impression that Cote was being the aggressor. Cote didn’t have to run cos Silva didn’t chase him. Not something to brag about or declare as a moral victory from a fight. I’ve only seen that fight once (at the time) but can recall how boring it was. There was no pressing at all. Infact, i’d like to know how many strikes, TD’s etc Cote landed on Silva before his knee blew. That may well reflect a more accurate view of Cotes performance

by Shoguns Hairy Forearms. on Jan 21, 2010 5:01 PM EST reply actions

He threw a lot more punches than Silva did

But they aren’t on the same level when it comes to striking(no one is). I’m just saying that everyone knew Cote didn’t deserve to be in the cage with someone like Silva, at least he went in their and fought like a man. He did the best he could with his tools.
