UFC Quick Quote: Gray Maynard feels Frankie Edgar has fought weaker competition
"He (Matt Veach) did win in the UFC and then he went up against Edgar after Pellegrino dropped out. So it's a new guy. Everyone who I am going up against have maybe one loss, you know? I'm going up against the tough guys. I'm going up against the best every fight. It's always the guys (where) it's like, 'Yeah, we can't get him an opponent because no one really wants to take the fight.' You know what? I'll take that fight always."
Gray Maynard sat down with Pro MMA Radio this past Monday to discuss his win over Nate Diaz, along with his loss of a title shot against BJ Penn - a title shot that has gone to Frankie Edgar. Maynard explained that while Edgar is coming off a dominant performance over Matt Veach, "The Answer" is not facing the tough competition that he is. For the record, Edgar's lone loss did come against "The Bully". Does Maynard have a point? Or are Edgar's dominant performances over Sean Sherk and Matt Veach make him more worthy of a title shot?

Maynard lost to Diaz in my opinion and hasn't finished any fights
Edgar has beaten some top contenders like Tyson and Sherk and always puts on entertaining fights whilst Gray has devolved into a clumsy boxer. He’s talking a lot of shit for a guy that arguably lost his last fight, hasn’t finished any of his recent fights and isn’t viewed as a worthwhile opponent by BJ.
"Wanderlei is focused and well trained...he will easily win this fight, by a large margin and with much better technique."
Anderson Silva on why Wand is going to smash Bisping. Get ready to lose your dignity frosnt.
Gray has fought tougher competition
AND HE BEAT EDGAR!!!!!!!

are you serious?
the only tough people Maynard has fought that Edgar didn’t is roger Huerta and Nate Diaz (some people think he lost both fights) and Rich Clementi while Edgar has fought Sherk , Tyson Griffin, Hermes Franca, Spence Fisher and Mark Bocek. Maynard hasn’t finished a fight since September 19th 2007 against Joe Veres??? Edgar isn’t that big of a finisher ether but he is way more exciting to watch then Maynard .
What your point?
That Edgar is better? more deserving? more exciting? Not sure what you’re getting at, but you’re wrong. Maynard beat Edgar, THE END!!!!!! BJ will DESTROY them both anyway

no my point is he has fought tougher competition
That is what the story is about and that is clearly what you wrote as your title
gray maynard's performance vs nate diaz was not very convincing
saying that edgar is too small to beat b.j. penn. penn dominated sherk and will dominate edgar too. i rather see donald cerrone face penn. much better fight and it will probably happen once cerrone beats henderson and moves into ufc territory. cerrone can take punishment and dish it out. i would love to see that fight if it happens.

Who cares about Maynard or Edgar!
Theses guys never finish fights against tough top 10 fighters! I put UD or split D on my UFC fantasy selections all the time cause i know they never finish fights
Florian will be the only guy that is close to beating BJ (which will never happen) Florian is and will always be #2 in the world behind BJ (and i don’t even like florian!)
Moot point
They will both get smashed anyways. They both should have had to beat Kenny or Diego to get their shot. U thought Maynard didn’t want to fight BJ anyways?
Agreed
Put them in together against BJ.
Edgar is probably more deserving of the title shot given his recent performances, but Gray did beat him. Its tough and I cant say I disagree
dude.....i am
It is tough to call, but doesn't matter.
After BJ destroys Frankie he has to move up to 170 and fight the winner of Kos/Daley or Fitch/Alves.
Do you guys think in Frankies heart of hearts, he thinks he has even a remot chance of beating BJ? This is as close to a sure thing as you will see in MMA IMO.
Yup
Was going to say pretty much the same thing. I was all for Maynard getting the opportunity to get his face busted by BJ first but then he laid a turd against Diaz. Who cares, really? Both lose and both lose bad.

Agree with the four intellegent posters above
Doesn’t matter. Both lose handily to Penn, who has wiped out all legitimate competition in the division. I would not take Frankie or Maynard over Sanchez or Florian, and they could not even get close to BJ

lw division
So they’re all fighting for 2nd place.
Bj should move to ww
Frankie vs grey for title?
That would be best scenario
Though I still wanna see bj clean all division

Comparing Edgar to Leitas is ridiculous
I guarantee Edgar is not gonna drop to the ground with his legs spread saying “do me” like Leitas did. While I would be very surprised if Edgar beat BJ, I think he is going to fair a lot better than people expect. His last 2 fights were very good albeit against lesser competition (I don’t consider Sherk a top guy anymore).

moot or otherwise, gotta respond to the bully. he looked TERRIBLE against an equally terrible looking Nate. Seriously. I can just imagine what Gray’s next few fights will look like. terrible boxing with the lead hand low and waiting for a decision.
Gatti. Dekkers. Pele. Aoki. Kang. Vanderlei. Basillio. Harry Greb.

what's it matter?
both Maynard and Edgar are AT LEAST one win away from a title shot (in reality). the UFC is just rushing this because all their champions are on the mend, and the one who isn’t (BJ) wants to fight in Abu Dhabi. if circumstances were better, i don’t think the UFC would be rushing this one.
did you know that out of the 20 UFC events in 2009, only 7 of them were headlined by title fights? That’s a whole lot of non-title fights being played off as PPV-worthy. heck, even if you don’t count Fight Nights and TUF Finales, that’s still 7 of 15 events.
i think it’s time for a new weight class. the UFC needs more champions to anchor all the events they plan to hold each year.
Agreed, there needs to be more weight classes
And almost every PPV should have a title fight, 7 out of 15 is beyond ridiculous! It also pisses me off that 111 and 112 will have two title fights each—which means that the Vegas and Vancouver cards will be crap. Time to fold the WEC into the UFC and also break up the HW division into HW 206-235 and Super HW 236-265. That would give the UFC 8 weight classes and pretty much guarantee a title fight on every PPV.
There are no such things as lesbians, just women who have not yet met Chuck Norris
i suggested another weight class on another blog and it was not popular.
i like your thinking.

Upon further review
Gray has been low class since day one. Look at his comments after his fight with Emerson. He knocked himself out and then whined. Recently he gets gift decisions and he whines. I honestly don’t see how he was given a decision win vs. Diaz. It wasn’t an impressive fight for either guy but Diaz made it a fight at least. He got a similar questionable decision versus Huerta, mostly based off takedowns. Not to turn this into a scoring system bashing thread (I am just fine keeping this a Gray bashing thread.) but giving too much credit for takedowns and little offense to follow it up has led to too many lay and pray wins. That is not exclusive to Maynard. That is about the only thing that awarded him a win against Edgar anyway. Edgar is more deserving the shot than Gray is.

WHO CARES
BJ will beat the shit out of Edgar AND Maynard.
Gray is right about recent fights
His last 2 fights were against tougher guys than what Frankie had but Frankie looked great in his 2 fights and Gray scraped decisions.
