Fedor Emelianenko vs Fabricio Werdum '99 percent confirmed' for April 16 on CBS

The long rumored match up between Strikeforce heavyweights Fabricio Werdum and Fedor Emelianenko looks to be inching closer to a done deal. In an interview with TATAME.com, Werdum confirmed what we've all been thinking for the last couple months.
Fabrício Werdum revealed to TATAME.com that the rumored fight against Fedor Emelianenko will probably take place in April 16th. "The fight against Fedor is 99% confirmed to April 16th. I have three months to train to the most important fight of my life."
This news isn't much of a surprise. With Alistair Overeem seemingly content to stay out of the current heavyweight picture, there really is no other opponent under the Strikeforce banner that can even make for a competitive fight with Fedor.
Now as to where the fight (presumably to serve as the main event on Strikeforce's return to CBS) is going to take place, that issue appears to still be up in the air.

my mma instincts tell me this will be a boring fight and end with Fedor getting the UD.
Will this be 5 rounds for the Wamma? Or 3 rounds as a reg SF bout.

I still think that a grappler will be the first person to beat fedor.
The issue is his sudden found power while standing. Only in his recent fights has he somehow turned into a KO machine. The only thing interesting in the fight is if Werdum can clinch with him. Then it would be a fun fight. Also I’ve always wanted to see him rematch Arona. That guy has the perfect style to beat and IMHO conceivably beat him back in teh day.

Anderson, Machida, Rampage, Shogun, and the Nog brothers all came from other orgs. Quit debating Fedor greatness. It diminishes everyone perception of you; instead, you should be questioning Brock’s “accomplishments”.

The UFC has been signing guys like Phil Baroni and Paul Buentello. We all know Werdum is head and shoulders above guys like that. So, it doesn’t make sense to attempt to make it sound like Werdum got cut because he’s not a good enough fighter, because anyone with any sense knows that’s just not the case. The guy has beaten Overeem, Zentsov, Aleks, Kevin’s boy Gonzaga twice, and just beat Bigfoot. The dude isn’t Brock, but he’s far from a can too. Just curious Kev, how can you agree with this knowing the caliber of fighters Werdum has beaten? You just said that if JDS beats GG he will have proven something to you, but Werdum’s beaten him twice. Honestly just wondering.

its funny how some guys beat GG it proves something but when others do he(GG) is just average if best and not that great. Thus Shane carwin was said to not have proven anything cuz the only person he beat was GG and he isn’t that great

I think the GG win is always a credit to Carwin, it’s just that GG is the only top HW he’s beaten. The thinking is that he’s only beaten one top fighter, so he shouldn’t be getting a title shot already. It’s not a knock on GG though. And yes, Werdum is as legit an opponent outside of the UFC as Fedor can fight right now. Who else is out there? And you can use this to say Fedor should fight in the UFC blah, blah, blah, but he’s not, and we don’t know the full reasons for it. Honestly I just get really tired of people calling fighters like Werdum “UFC rejects” as if they’re not good enough to fight in the UFC when the UFC is signing fighters like I listed above. Your argument is weak if that’s all you can come up with, because it’s just not true. The guy got dropped after losing to JDS and his two fights before that were TKO’s over Vera and GG. You know that’s just a UFC political move because they didn’t like Werdum. Also, no, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Werdum take the Fedor fight to a decision either. Werdum has only lost via TKO once, and he just won the Super HW division at the ADCC so as nasty as Fedor is on the ground, I’d say it’s pretty safe to say Fedor won’t be subbing him. Going to a decision is actually very likely, don’t know what point you’re trying to make.

Winning adcc doesn't make you a good MMA fighter guys
GG won it a couple years ago and infact I don’t think there is a top ten fighter in MMA in any ADCC weight class. Like GSP said shields may be able to out wrestle him in a real wrestling match but MMA wrestling is different and he believes he would win and I agree as not only is GSP striking in the wrestling guard better but wo is his JJ. As is the JJ used in MMA different from the ADCC. Yeah if Fedor tried just JJ he may lose or struggle but on the ground Fedor stays busy with strikes and is well aware of possible JJ moves used against him that could easily open a JJ attempt on Werdum. It’s more likely Fedor wins by KO or TKO but I think he’s more likely to sub Werdum than it go to a decision. Winning the ADCC doesn’t make Werdum a good MMA fighter he needs to be able to challenge Fedor in the stand up and grappling department to have any chance and I can’t see it happening.

Just pointing out why I also think it’s likely that the fight goes to a decision. Werdum has never lost via sub. This is because he has some of the absolute best jits in the world. I don’t believe for a second that GSP has better JJ than Shields. Shields has won 6 of his last 8 fights via submission. Don’t really know why you replied to my post, because the point you were trying to make was one that I’m well aware of and didn’t say anything to the contrary of. I don’t think Werdum will beat Fedor. I also don’t think that Fedor will sub Werdum. Considering Werdum has only been TKO’d once(and never KO’d) and Fedor has only shown one-punch KO power recently I would have to say safe money is on a decision.

The only thing I don’t agree with is that this fight is going to go the distance. I can’t see this fight being dictated in anyway on Werdums part. If the fight goes to the ground it’s because Fedor wants it there if it stays standing it’s because Fedor wants it there. All I can picture is Werdum getting frustrated and making a mistake were Fedor is relentless once he sees an opening. But at the same time I see your point and who knows how high Werdum can raise his game with an opportunity like this if it goes to a decision Werdum will need his A+ game.

If he shows up like he did against JDS he’s getting stopped. However, fighting Fedor usually brings out the absolute best in fighters. I feel like a motivated Werdum is good enough to go to a decision. Wouldn’t be shocked if I’m wrong and you’re right though. I guess we’ll see!

fedor is only 5 feet 11 inches and 234 pounds and has alot of belly fat
as we get older belly fat is harder to get rid of. it would be great if he could lose 29 pounds but i don’t see it. he should have a fight with anderson silva at 215-220. imo.

you’re not even funny when u try. The biggest loser show (I’ve never watched) is about people that weigh like 400lbs, I weigh about 190, nice try though. Most pro fighters cut 20 pounds in the final week leading up to the fight, why don’t you go find a clue (I hear wal mart has a 2 for 1 special) and then try coming back with an intelligent post!

Fedor just gets a lot of crap for not fighting worthy opponents, which I understand. But, he is fighting the best available fighter for him at the moment. Guys gripe he is not in the UFC facing the best. Really, the HW division is kind of weak in all of MMA. There is really only 5 guys in the UFC he hasn’t fought that are considered top – Brock Cain Carwin JDS & Mir. I am not sold on Cain or Carwin yet, I think I would take Rogers or AA over them (I’ll probably get slammed for that) – Honestly to me there are only 3 fighters in the UFC that could pose a threat – Brock Mir & JDS – of those I think JDS would have the best shot matchup wise. I get people being not so pumped about this fight, but it is Fedor and he is the best, enjoy his fights while you can

Werdum?? I can't think of any strength this guy has that will threaten any top HW little alone Fedor.
Yeah his JJ is good but Fedors defence against JJ is great and Fedor has more strength making it that much tougher. Werdums Striking not great with little KO power. I think Fedor is going to make Werdum tap, Fedor likes to beat his opponents at their strength and I see him having no issues with Werdum. A loss against Werdum would be brutal for Fedor.

Fabrico Werdum didn’t look that amazing vs. Big Foot but, with the marketing team hashing out something cool they could build the angle of Werdum beating fedors brother….Werdum has beat Gonzaga x2, Overeem, Vera so i mean theres some decent talent he’s defeated. Until, Overeem defends the belt like he should then were stuck with it and lets never overlook anyone in this sport. I can’t see Fedor ever losing based on his accomplishments but, Werdum is a good fighter.I’d rather see a rematch with him and arlovski but, i ain’t scott coker
