UFC 110: Minotauro Nogueira is 'training his ass off' for Cain Velasquez

Nogueira_medium

Props: Fight Hype

Quoteworthy:

"Well, I know that Big Nog is training his ass off right now. As everyone saw, unfortunately when he lost to Frank Mir, and not taking anything away from Frank Mir, but Nogueira wasn’t the Nogueira that he normally is because of the staph infection and all of the injuries. But he came back and he fought Randy Couture and put on the fight that he put on and we’re just really excited that he’s training hard and he’s healthy. He’s training with a lot of wrestlers, boxers and Jiu Jitsu guys and Cain Velasquez is a serious competitor. The guy is a beast and an animal. He’s very strong, quick, and relentless and he doesn’t stop. He’s got a lot of gas. I think it’s a great test. A lot of people have a lot of hype behind Cain Velasquez, but I believe in Nogueira and I believe in his boxing and Jiu-Jitsu and I believe Nogueira could have a good night. We’re hoping to beat Cain."

Manager extraordinaire Ed Soares checks in from camp Minotauro to inform the fans that living legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-5-1) is firing on all cylinders for his UFC 110 main event against Cain Velasquez for the promotion's debut "down under" at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia on Saturday, Feb. 21. Big Nog is hoping that a dominating win over the rising star, coupled with his victory over Randy Couture last August can put him back into the heavyweight title picture after a 2008 stoppage to Frank Mir temporarily derailed his ascension. Are there too many miles on the Brazilians tires? Or is he getting his second wind?

Nog is done

Cain is garbage. Always has been. Just because I think Nog is going to beat Cain doesn’t mean I think he is good.

I told you how the top 5 is. Nog might not be top 4, but he’s better than 12th Cain.

Nog is in no way done....

He is about to cut up Cain on the feet, then put him away with a SUB. NOG will be always be in the top 5. There are only a few true legends and NOG is one of them.

"Done" might be a little harsh

He isn’t going to be in the top 2 in the UFC ever again. Maybe even top 6, if he doesn’t look better in this fight than he has in 80% of his fights in the past 4 years…

I love Nog but he has not looked stellar since coming to the UFC

He has always taken a beating before pulling off the W, but it was nothing short of pure luck that he managed to get past Sylvia and Herring. He was practically finished by both. Finally Mir finished the job and I dont think the staph would have mattered – Nog’s stand up looked as slow and sloppy in that fight as it did in his 2 fights that preceded it. His fight against Randy was impressive, however, and by far the best he has looked since coming over from PRIDE.

So you’ve had a staph infection and you know what it does to your body?

Forget about winning and losing; forget about pride and pain. Let your opponent graze your skin and you smash into his flesh; let him smash into your flesh and you fracture his bones; let him fracture your bones and you take his life. Do not be concerned with escaping safely - lay your life before him.

Nog is done!! He’ sucks! he shud of been beaten of Tim Sylvia and Herring for god sake.. Mir destroyed him…and he wud again without a staph infection and he looked awful agaist a old couture…if randy had any power he could have knocked him out! Hes always relied on being able to take punishment but still will but you cannit go on like that forever.

by do work son on Jan 20, 2010 11:00 AM EST reply actions

How did he look awful against Randy?

He knocked him down twice and almost submitted him twice, plus he was able to sweep Randy from guard to mount. That was a masterful performance from Nog and was anything but awful, no idea what fight you were watching.

I like Cain and all, but i think when this hits the ground, Noguera will sub him via Kimura in the 2nd round.

by Nameless on Jan 20, 2010 11:20 AM EST reply actions

Tough fight to call

Cain lacks power in his hands but has decent striking technique, Nog has power and a legendary chin but his defence has let him down recently. Cain is the much better wrestler but he’s going to struggle to neutralise Nog’s BJJ. Nog has the technique to catch you in a fight ending submission or seconds or sweep you from his back to mount and even now he can still do that. Cain has never faced anyone with BJJ as good as Nog’s and he’ll have to be careful on the ground not to get caught. Ultimately I think that Nog will be too experienced and well rounded but Cain will be a tough test and both guys are quality HWs and deserving contenders (far more deserving than Mir and Carwin).

Question:

has anyone here ever done this ice bath thing shown in the photo? Does it hurt at all at first?

You might aswell be getting into boiling water at first, thats what it felt like to me...

And i could only last 30 secs max, and even at that, it was only my bath at home with only a few bags of ice. I have bad back problems and someone rec’d it for me to try but I almost broke my back jumping out of the fucking thing!!

I've done it once, it's horrible and will never do it again.

My lungs felt like imploding and exploding at once. I do it the pansy way now – cold water to hot water in the shower without burning myself. Only do it when i am really sore though.

fucking noghuggers

Still crying about a staph infection getting him a loss.. Maybe the legend aint so good after all? He couldn’t beat Fedor. He would get completely demolished by Brock.

that didn't make sense

But he’s right Nog would be smothered if he fought Brock.

I wouldn’t say that. Nog is good at stuffing takedowns and even if it does go to the ground how are you so sure Nog won’t sweep him? Plus Brock is inexperienced and Nog is a savy vet. Brock has been submitted before and i definetly think Nog is more that capable of tapping him out.

What sub is Nog going to pull out while he's sleeping?

Brock was subbed and fixed that hole in his game. Nog wouldn’t be awake long enough to get lucky again.

fixed that hole? Really jay?

Come on, you can hate on nog all you want but that’s ridiculous. Regardless, he’s gonna retire after he gets that belt so we need as many haters as possible to drive him.

LOL

I just can’t give Nog any credit. He fell off a long time ago. I don’t see him coming back and stopping a man the size and skill level of Lesnar. Or even Mir for that matter. I try to cheer for Nog because of the person he is. I just don’t see it in him any more.

His wrestling is a skill

And it is far better than that of Cain and Shane.

and that's what's going to walk him straight into a Nog sub.

The man didn’t fall off. There was just no one interesting enough in the UFC HW division for him to care. He gained a bunch of unnecessary weight and was training for fights by traveling all around the world while doing seminars. Then again he was being asked to fight guys like herring and Mir.

One of the early year fights I am looking forward to the most

Two questions will be answered hopefully: Did Nog look good in his last fight because he was fighting someone older and slower than himself? And is Cain actually legit? My eyes tell me Cain is a little overrated, and Nog still has some great fights left in the tank. I got Nog via sub. Really looking forward to it though, interesting match up

by domino effect on Jan 20, 2010 12:09 PM EST reply actions

Nog in the 2nd via sub

I agree, I think Nog will catch him with a sub on the ground in the second. I really like Cain though, and i think he will dominate Nog for the majority of the match but I’m rooting for Nog in this one, the guys a legend and I find it hard to shake my loyalty :-)

At least NOG mans up and takes the ice bath

unlike when Tito did the bath and whined like a little girl

alright Tito, I’d probably whine too but you are supposed to be an animal
