Melvin Guillard enlists the help of Joe Stevenson and Greg Jackson ...
... to help him with his submission defense, finally:
"I’ve been talking with Coach Greg for a while about coming up. Me and Joe Stevenson have been hanging out a lot and he just kept telling me that it’s a great camp to come to. I knew it would be the best place in the world for me because his training speaks for itself, so I ended up coming here and they made me a part of the team…. They’re teaching me ways of not only weathering the storm, but of creating problems for guys in their own element….. Now I’m not as worried anymore (about facing a grappler) because I’m training with the best guys in the world, and just having Joe in my corner has built up my confidence a whole lot. He submits me all the time, but Joe just has that vice grip – once he’s on you, he’s on you. And even with my explosiveness, I have my times when I can get away from him, and it just comes from training. As long as I keep learning and my confidence keeps growing, I’m gonna continue to fight whoever they put in front of me. It doesn’t matter if its jiu-jitsu guys or standup guys, the good thing about jiu-jitsu guys is that it gives me a chance to get a knockout of the night bonus. That’s kinda how I’m coming into this next fight. I’m gonna be very explosive and I’m just gonna unload everything I’ve got on this guy… I feel that I’m putting things together. I made Albuquerque my new home for training, and I’m just gonna take it one day and one step at a time, and I know that I’m gonna be a better fighter by the end of this year. Just being here gives me all the confidence in the world and lets me know what I need to do to be successful. I think 2010 is gonna be a really good year for me, and hopefully by 2011, I should be getting a title shot."
Seven of the eight career losses (almost 90 percent) for the "Young Assassin" have come by way of submission.
Is this the missing piece to the enigmatic puzzle that is Guillard or does the 26-year-old just not have what it takes to reach the upper echelon of the division?
We could find out soon enough -- Guillard is set to face submission specialist Ronnys Torres at UFC 109: "Relentless" in just a few weeks.

most explosive hands in the division
if the rest of his game could catch up he would be a serious threat to anyone in the division. Hes also by far the most friendly ufc fighter i have met, real cool guy.
Good to finally see him snap into reality
now Guillard just needs to call Melvin Manhoef and get him to do the same.
"We know only one thing about this guy. That he ate a croissant for breakfast this morning." - Bas Rutten on a new french fighter.
If he gets homesick out there in the desert, he can just snort some sand.
The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful
"hopefully by 2011, I should be getting a title shot."
that will not happen, somebody should tell him.
"OH GOD THAT'S DISGUSTING! HE BROKE HIS FREAKIN' ARM"
"hey man that's the business, we're not figure skating"
In the name of the Fedor, the Anderson and the GSP. Amen.

Ya seriously
Someone tell Melvin to pump the brakes and win a few fights first.
It has always amazed me how many UFC lives this cat has
Makes me wonder what kind of photos he has of Joe Silva.
Guillard vs Terry Etim would be interesting
"He wants to get in close and use that reach advantage" - Mike Goldberg
"Half of this game is 90% Mental" - Tim Sylvia
"I have two words for you... Destiny" - Diego Sanchez.
Anyone interested in a dumbest MMA quote of all time poll?

Etim would submit Melvin
He’s got some very slick submissions and with his long limbs he’ll be too much for Melvin at this point on the ground, plus he’d be a dangerous opponent standing as well. Melvin may be working on his submission defence (finally) but he has a long way to go before he’ll be comfortable competing against grapplers, though training at Jackson’s is a good start and could help reinvigorate his career.
"Wanderlei is focused and well trained...he will easily win this fight, by a large margin and with much better technique."
Anderson Silva on why Wand is going to smash Bisping. Get ready to lose your dignity frosnt.
sweet
this could mean some big problems for the other light weights, i doubt they have improved him that much since his last fight, but this is good news, guida and sherk and all other lw wrestlers should call this guy out, before he gets good on the ground, im guessing tyson will be his next fight. just a feeling.
This guy is a joke and shouldnt even be in the UFC
He lost to Tibau.

Anywho, I had the chance to run into Melvin in Oklahoma a few months back, he was in town Training his wrestling with brandon shelton, an OSU all american. He was also training his Judo at USA stars in Moore.
I think he is taking his training a little more seriously than he has in the past

Great skill set
mentally WEAK. Hopefully with some help from Jacksons camp he can improve that. I know training doesn’t exactly help you mentally, but I think Greg can bring confidence to him. A little bit of a ground game and maybe JUST maybe he’ll crack the top 10 lw’s. I find that highly doubtful, but he does have some nice hands which could pose trouble for a division full of wrestlers.
I do a lot of jacking off, ya know, because I don’t get no women, so these arms are, like, humongously big. See it’s workout, and it’s pleasure.._" Charles Bennett

Kevin and I have discussed this
But from what I’ve seen we may be the only Guillard fans on this site. Both fans of his…if he cam grow up and progress his game he will be one of the most dangerous fighters in the UFC. He’s got the explosive athletecism and power that trained martial artists like kenny florian just can’t match no matter how much they train. He’s still pretty young and don’t be surprised if he is a serious player in years to come(provided he grows up and drops the immature drug stuff)
