UFC Quick Quote: Belfort's brain the key to beating Silva in April

Vitor-belfort-3_medium

"This fight is a big mystery. Both trained boxing with [Luis] Dorea. I asked many people in the academy, and everybody tells me they can’t predict what’s going to happen. The consensus is that if Belfort explodes at the beginning, he has a chance for the knockout, but most people believe more in Anderson if the fight goes past the first round. That’s what I heard most people saying. I’ve never trained with Anderson, but I’ve already trained with Belfort, and I can say he is very complete and certainly one of the biggest talents ever in Brazilian MMA. His only weakness is his mind, but, lately, he hasn’t shown any psychological weakness. I think Belfort is more complete physically and technically than Anderson, but Anderson is always 100 percent psychologically. So, for sure, it’s an unpredictable fight."

-- Demian Maia talks to Sherdog.com about the feeling in Brazil within the mixed martial arts community about the upcoming fight between middleweight champion Anderson Silva and number one contender Vitor Belfort at UFC 112 on April 10. He says that basically most feel it's a toss up, with the only real question mark being the mental fortitude of the "Phenom." In fact, Maia even suggests that Belfort may even be more gifted skill-wise than the "Spider." So is this "Battle of Brazil" going to be much closer than most fans and critics predict? And, with the right mind, can Belfort dethrone the dominant -- and seemingly unbeatable -- champion once and for all?

Can't wait...

finally a decent challenge for Silva.

by ashegam on Jan 19, 2010 9:19 AM EST reply actions

So you don't think Dan Henderson was a decent challenge?

It would be nice to see the Phenom become champion once again but it’s difficult to pick against the Spider!

by MMACHAMP on Jan 19, 2010 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

I think he was

I agree about Vitor, it would be one hell of a story, to lose the title and then come back 6 years later and get it back. I realise it’s different weight divisions etc. but still, it’s like a rocky movie or something.

In the name of the Fedor, the Anderson and the GSP. Amen.

Vitor is the man.

Vitor is definitely the quickest and best boxer out of all contenders in the MW division. I think he has a good chance of outboxing Anderson, he just has to stay away from Anderson’s kicks and clinch.

Been fan since day 1

I’ve rooted for him through the good years as well as the bad. I love Anderson, but I gotta go with Vitor in this one. But he needs to be the old Vitor. The explosive Vitor!

by getrawbc on Jan 19, 2010 10:03 AM EST up reply actions

He’s right about the mental aspect. Silva just looks like he’s having fun out there. Does that guy even have a gameplan? I think he just makes it up as he goes. You see guys getting trapped in the training mindset in the cage. They go through the Jitz drills you can see it clear as day. You see the hand go up automatically to tap before they even try to get out of the hold. You will never see that with Anderson Silva. The guy puts the A in MMA.

VItor matched up well against Franklin. But not so much with Silva. They gave him the shot too quickly and we will see why after Silva destroys him by Jose Aldo style flying scissor knee and he goes on a lose streak. I like Vitor too, I’m just sayin…

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

by fenderacoustic (formerly wAyNe) on Jan 19, 2010 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

He doesn’t need a gameplan, nobody does all you need is a good head and a good feel for the game and with his qualities he’ll finish guys from everywhere.

What a joke!!

I still cant believe that Vitor is in the UFC and gets a shot at Anderson. There are definitely a couple of guys more deserving of the shot!!!! Vitor………..phhhhhhh!

by HEELHOOK on Jan 19, 2010 9:40 AM EST reply actions

Agree....

It is starting to feel like everyone is just waiting on Anderson to lose. If the UFC have to import someone and leap frog more deserving opponents, so be it. After this fight, everyone will start back with the Machida/Silva dream fight. Ed Soares said it best, Anderson is similar to Ali in his prime. Just enjoy it.

by delldog on Jan 19, 2010 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

Yep

I agree Heelhook as well but I got to admit, this match up intrigues me much more than Nate fighting Anderson again, and that is not a slam on Nate because he IS much better than the first time he fought Anderson!

by Edgecrusher71 on Jan 19, 2010 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

heelhook

you goof why would you want to see the same people fight A S. this fight gives me goosebumps i cant wait. I got Belfort by second round TKO.

He's gayer than a handbag full of rainbows.

Not sure the name calling was needed

But If you see a Belfort second round TKO, you are probably the only one.

This is Silva’s fight to lose.

Vitor is getting smashed

No two ways about it. Silva by highlight reel destruction.

That's sort of why we have rankings.

If Nate or Hendo “earned” the right to fight Anderson again, there it is. Don’t just throw someone in a championship fight w/o challenging him with the top contenders of that weight class.

by delldog on Jan 19, 2010 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

Since when does the UFC use rankings?

Otherwise we wouldn’t get Hardy vs. GSP. Or Lesnar fighting for a title so quickly. The UFC just wants to sell fights and Belfort vs. Silva is the most appealing one they can put together right now.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! Oh, and Brock deserved his shot, by the way.

Randy for Couture

*he obviously was good enough otherwise he wouldnt be such a dominant force at top of division – I think Mir will beat Brock in the rubber match if he does come back to full fitness.

On Vitor – it is never good for a man or fighter especially to be known to have a weak mental game…but like GSP i think Vitor has a great mentality now and this will be an epic match-up – CANNOT WAIT!!!

meant to say...

before my comment FUCK THAT SHIT – P-Dub is CORRECT!!! that you deserve a title shot if you are good enough and in Brock’s case he obviously was! Fuck that shit about having to have 5 wins stringed together!

The UFC wants to make money! that's all there is to it.

you deserve a title shot if you’re good enough? yeah right. Machida should have fought for the title right away then and Junior or Nog should be fighting for the title now not Carwin/Mir.

fact is if Randy wasn’t the champ back then they would have never put Brock in that fight, he outweighs Randy by a ton and that eliminated Randy’s only shot at beating him, they knew Randy would never take Brock down and win.

fresh like uhh.

by RoBerto. on Jan 19, 2010 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

Randy doesn't only beat people he outweighs

And Machida didn’t get a shot because he was boring people to tears. Dana didn’t want to have to watch Machida dance for 5 rounds every fight.

by jay. on Jan 19, 2010 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Randy doesn’t only beat ppl he outweighs? you understood that i meant that Brock would be too heavy for Randy to take down right. I think you did, and everybody knew what was going on with Machida so saying that you only need to be good enough to get a title shot is bs.

fresh like uhh.

by RoBerto. on Jan 19, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Weight has nothing to do with not being able to take people down

He did quite well against Tim and GG in that department. I wasn’t arguing about Machida, I was saying he was good enough, but he was boring. Dana didn’t want a champion who was going to dance around and decision everyone.

by jay. on Jan 19, 2010 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

well it does when Brock Lesnar is almost equally good at wrestling, and that was what i was saying and that was why they threw Lesnar right in. As i said, it’s all about money and entertainment for the UFC

Me too

But I will be picking the Spider in Mac’s pick um game. Its hard to see the Spder losing to anybody.

Skibowski FTW!

by BNF on Jan 19, 2010 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

Hoping Vitor wins.

I dont TOTALLY agree he deserves the shot but like many have said & I agree… I dont want to see the same people getting shots at him. I do wish Hendo had 1 more chance but that’s long gone so bring on the Phenom.

Hopefully those laser quick fists land early and not the other way around.

I’m sure another intentional shot to back of the head like he gave Franklin will seal the victory for Vitor.

Where is Alpha when you need him!! There are some funny ones out there but I haven’t a clue how to post them!

Hard to call

of coarse i think anderson will win, but this is mma and anderson is on an amazing win streak, at some point in time the numbers catch up to you and you got to lose one, if vitor wins the belt he wont hold it for long and silva will win it back before the year is out.

by Blazy j on Jan 19, 2010 11:07 AM EST reply actions

Cant w8 for this fight!

Vitor is the 1st real striker the spider ever faced. Vitor has sum of the quickest powerful hands in the world & he has a solid chin! I hope Vitor wins he has the best chance of doing out of anybody.

by d*locc on Jan 19, 2010 11:55 AM EST reply actions

they need new blood against Silva

Belfort fits perfectly. They do not want another fight where Anderson dances around like he is on vacation. Belfort is a serious threat. Will be a good fight with Belfort getting the tko in the 2nd round.

by ElStIkO on Jan 19, 2010 4:18 PM EST reply actions

what a joke

Let me get this straight…….Belfort beats Terry Martin (Not even top 20), Lindland (Old past prime), and Franklin and suddenly he’s a threat to Silva?? Get the fuck out of here. Some of you people are ridiculous. Anderson has never faced anyone with Belfort speed correct? Answer this, when has Belfort faced ANYONE in his career like Anderson?……Exactly.

Can't wait for this fight

It’ll be tough watching either man lose as they’re both legends and 2 of my all-time favourite fighters. I think this will be a very close and technical fight, I’ll be surprised if either man dominates. Ultimately I think that Andy is too well rounded and elusive for Vitor and when the fight reaches the later stages Vitor’s speed will go and he will get picked apart but if both of them come in great shape and have great camps then this could be a very tough fight to call. I’m going with Andy by decision in his most competetive UFC fight to date.

Silva vs Belfort

The only way I see Belfort winning this fight is if he just explodes out of the gate and manages to connect, if he doesn’t do this he will get picked a part by Silva. Anderson Silva has faster hands and a better reaction time then Belfort . K.O in round one for Silva.

I hate Belfort, he gouged Randy’s eye in their rubber match like a little girl.

Every fighter has a plan until he gets hit
