UFC 113: Josh Koscheck vs Paul Daley co main event set for May 1

Koscheck_daley_medium

Here we go!

British brawler Paul Daley will get his shot at the big time when he collides with perennial welterweight contender, Josh Koscheck, at the upcoming UFC 113 event from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on May 1, 2010.

"Kos" today confirmed the good news via Twitter.com, saying the electric 170-pound showdown will serve as the co main event of the major pay-per-view (PPV) event. And in all likelihood it will determine the next contender in a division stacked with talent.

Even before the stakes were raised with championship implications on the line, this one already had the ingredients for an explosive encounter inside the Octagon and out.

In fact, Daley has already insulted Koscheck, promising that he would "rock" the "Fraggle" if the pair ever touched 'em up, indicating that the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) standout resembles a 1980s-era Jim Henson character.

That's not a compliment.

Star-divide

Daley is as confident as they come and the heavy-handed welterweight striker has been able to back it up with two lethal performances since making his promotional debut.

He torched the title hopes of Martin Kampmann with a first round technical knockout at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" and then brutalized grappling whiz Dustin Hazelett at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" with a crushing knockout in hos most recent performance.

Koscheck, meanwhile, has been recovering for an injury that forced him out of a planned rematch against Paulo Thiago at UFC 109: "Relentless" next month.

He has gone on to score two impressive wins since the surprise loss to the Brazilian, stopping Frank Trigg via technical knockout at UFC 103: "Franklin vs. Belfort" back in September and then choking out Anthony Johnson just last month at UFC 106: "Ortiz vs. Griffin 2."

A third straight win could have him -- or "Semtex" --knocking on the door of the winner of Georges St. Pierre vs. Dan Hardy.

UFC 113 features the much-anticipated rematch between 205-pound division champion, Lyoto Machida, defending his belt against fellow Brazilian Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the main event of the evening.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on the still-developing Montreal fight card.

haha koscheck

i love it i see this being similar to the rumble fight minus the eye pokes

Rumble and Daley aren't even comparable

If you think Rumble and Daley are the same thing then you’re sorely mistaken. Rumble doesn’t even have a dozen fights yet and has nothing but power. Daley has been fighting pro MMA for 7 years, has won belts in three orgs, is a former Muay Thai world champ (not sure under what banner) and has a purple belt in BJJ. Koscheck best not be thinking what you’re thinking because if he takes Daley lightly, then he will get f*cked up, badly!

Number one contender

Especially for Paul as he’s beaten Kampmann and McLovin’. Gonna be a great fight!!!! I think it’ll be like the Rumble fight, hopefully with out the eye pokes though. Kos via rear naked choke
Looking forward to the trash talking haha

probly 3 co main event

no way they overlook rampage vs rashad as a co main event .two number one contenders match

by tkosteve on Jan 18, 2010 7:52 PM EST reply actions

My guess is that Rashad/Rampage will headline the May 29th show in Vegas. It just doesn’t make sense from the UFC’S perspective to put that fight on the same card as Machida/Shogun.

by JT7 on Jan 18, 2010 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

Except the winners would be ready at the same time.

But I agree JT7. I think they are going to pull the Page/Shad fight out of the Montreal event.

by jay. on Jan 18, 2010 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

they are, why have two main events on one card. Rampage is going to fight Rashad in Las Vegas. I would be shocked otherwise.

fresh like uhh.

by RoBerto. on Jan 18, 2010 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, Rampage/Rashad will be moved.

This fight is a tough call. Kos could get a decision if he shoots in immediately and tries to smother Daley and wear him out… but Daley will smash him standing, and Kos likes to stand up these days.

I’ve been calling for this fight for a while, should be a good one.

Rampage-Rashad is supposed to be happening at UFC 114 now

This should be a sick fight, the Rough House-AKA rivalry is getting really interesting and there’s going to be a lot of shit talking in the run-up to this fight. If Kos tries to stand with Semtex then he’s getting KO’d, Kos may have power but he can’t rely on his overhand right against a muay thai champion. Daley has great timing and speed in his punches as well as one punch KO power. If Kos is smart then he’ll look to takedown Semtex early and use ground and pound to wear him down before looking for a submission but I expect Daley to get the KO before Kos gets the chance to take him down. Can’t wait for this one, shame that it’s not taking place in the UK but it’s great seeing Semtex face a top contender, the winner of this fight should get the winner of GSP-Hardy.

by David W-S on Jan 19, 2010 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know David

Is Kos worthy of a second fight with GSP? Without beating anyone in the top 5, why should he? It will only make him 4 and 2 in his last six. And the guys he has beaten aren’t top 5. Unless he beats Fitch, Alves or BJ he has no right fighting GSP. I think he will beat Daley, but Daley is a one-trick pony. Remember Daley lost to the goat last year, he doesn’t deserve to fight GSP either.

GSP needs to go to MW. BJ, GSP and AS should all move up one division, that would make everything really exciting again.

by jay. on Jan 19, 2010 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

Fair point, I’d rather BJ, GSP and Andy all move up a division as well but if that doesn’t happen then I wouldn’t mind seeing GSP face the winner of this fight or the winners of Kos-Daley and Fitch-Alves II fight for the next title shot. Kos and Daley are as deserving as any other WW at this point and a decisive win in this fight would be huge for either of them. There aren’t many contenders left for Andy, GSP or BJ to beat but it’s still no sure thing that any of them will move up a division full-time and if they don’t then they’re going to have to face the top contenders and right now Kos and Semtex are as good as any other WW.

This fight is gunna be nuts

I am gunning for this to be my 1st UFC show….I give the edge to Kos based on experience and opponents he’s beaten. Daley though is very heavy handed and i gurantee this will be a bloodbath lol……Kos by KO

by ThePunisher on Jan 18, 2010 7:55 PM EST reply actions

???Experience

Ummm……Daley has 33 fights under his belt to where Koscheck only has 18 fights. You make no sense. Kos has not beaten any body that is even worth mentioning. Kos is going to sleep worst then the Paulo Thiago fight. Please people with the Rumble fight……..Daley stand-up is more solid and has more experience than Rumble is.

by Pimp_man on Jan 18, 2010 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

sorry UFC experience

Kos has beat Spatt. Sanchez, Hazlett, Lytle, Yoshida, Trigg and Rumble while Daley has beat Kampmann, Hazlett and Ludwig……i give the edge on experience with Kos regardless to the number of fights. Daley is from england and the sport of mma has been growing there since 1993. Meaning that Daley jumped on every show he could which is a good thing but, Kos has experience as hes beaten more experienced opponents.

by ThePunisher on Jan 18, 2010 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

Daley does have more experience than Rumble and Kos

But I see Kos being able to weather any sort of storm thrown at him. I think Kos will get the sub in the end. Daley obviously has the chance to knock him out but if Kos just puts him down. I think he’ll frustrate him and the rear naked will be there for the taken

by IrishKev on Jan 18, 2010 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

It took Jake Shields late in the 2nd to sub Daley. Daley is not an easy guy to sub. It’s obvious your making this rear naked choke assumption based of the Rumble fight. I can see Kos winning this but only by decision.

shields, state champion wrestler in CA

koscheck d-1 national champion, multiple time all american

koscheck wins a fight with shields 99/100 times, also beats daley 100/100 in mma

daley has standup TRUE, ground game? not so much sure shields is a black belt blah blah blah but he struggled getting daley down because his shot actually sucks he beat mayhem because he wanted to go down with shields where daley didnt.

koscheck vs daley will look similar to gsp vs alves

We're talking submissions here

‘What do you mean Shields is a black belt’ bla bla bla: He’s a blackbelt under Cesar Gracie and has finished 3rd at Abu Dhabi! I think his success in jiu-jitsu can be compared to koschecks wrestling achievments.

Nevertheless, if Kos turns this into a wrestling match, Daley is in for a long night! If he’s stupid enough to stand with Daley to prove a point, he’ll get his head knocked off! The A J fight showed that Kos might actually have some sense though, as he decided to use his wrestling for the first time in a while.

by Kenwoo on Jan 19, 2010 6:33 AM EST up reply actions

well we all knew that

I’m just in shock that so many on here are writing Daley off, comparing him to Rumble…? WTF!? Rumble isn’t even a tiny fraction of the fighter that Daley is.
Anyone who has ever even glanced at Daley’s record knows that he is vulnerable to submissions, but even having said that he is a purple belt in BJJ and Josh is only one grading above him at brown belt. Plus it’s not like Josh is a submission specialist. just because he RNC’d Rumble, a guy who wrestled in high school and doesn’t even have a dozen pro fights, doesn’t by any stretch of the imagination mean that he will be able to do the same to a guy who has been fighting pro for 7 years with over 30 fights, has held belts in three other orgs and actually has some BJJ credentials, minimal as they are, he still has them.

all in all, they are both really tough guys, with good skill sets. but I think it will be alot easier for Daley to finish the fight than for Kos ie: KO,TKO. Daley has never been stopped with strikes. Kos’s only chances are lay n’ pray, and submissions and I don’t think that the sub will be as easy as most are saying, the last man to sub him was jake shields 2 years ago, and the last guy before that was Kitaoka in 06!!! you’re telling me Josh’s subs game is as good as either of theirs?
WAKE THE F*CK UP PEOPLE!!!

Not trying to compare Rumble and Daley

I just see the fight going the same way kinda. I think Kos should do the smart thing and frustrate Daley
But it wouldn’t surprise me to see him test the stand up wanting to disprove the Thiago KO. But I think Kos has a better chin than he’s been credit for. Alves couldn’t KO him
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a KO for Daley but all the same I think if Kos is smart he should win this regardless of technique. I’m just predicting it’ll be done with a rear naked choke

by IrishKev on Jan 19, 2010 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

Actually Spinning Fat Kick...

Johnson was a JUCO College National Wrestling Champion in his younger years,

And though I generally agree with your statement, there is a first time for everything. Yoshi had never been stopped with strikes before Kos and look what happened to him.

Spot on SFK

Shields is the real deal on the ground but very few people on this site give him any respect so it’s no surprise that Randy is bashing his skills. Kos is a very good wrestler and Semtex has been submitted in the past but Semtex will be the best striker that Kos has faced since Alves (Daley is much better than Rumble) and we all remember how that fight panned out. I’m with you on this one, Daley is going to KO Kos and before he even gets the chance to take him down.

Experience in Cage Rage, MFC, and Elite XC are no where near the same level of competition that the UFC provides. Kos has beaten nobody worth mentioning but went 3 rounds with the best WW and barely sustained any damage. Yoshida, SAnchez, and Johnson are all worth mentioning. Outside of Kampman who has Daley beat? I would say a win over Sanchez is a bit more prolific then Kampman, imo. Daley mma career is by an large a list of nobodies and never will be fighters.

I personally think Kos is going to get the takedown and once again expose why Daley won’t get a title shot, NO Ground Game! Koschecks wrestling is second to only GSP and I think he will have no problem taking advantage of this, taking his back and choking the life out of Daley.

by Da Monkey on Jan 19, 2010 9:01 AM EST up reply actions

Da Monkey, you're turning into my mania sparring partner...

I don’t think that the sub will be as easy as you’re saying, the last man to sub him was jake shields 2 years ago, and the last guy before that was Kitaoka in 06!!! you’re telling me Josh’s subs game is as good as either of theirs?

Josh is a brown belt in bjj and Daley is a purple belt, one gradings difference. Jake shields as I’m sure you know is a grappling specialist (black belt, came third in ADCC) and he had to work really hard to sub Daley with some pretty technical positioning and 1 and a half rounds of failed attempts. To say that he has no ground game seems a pretty ignorant statement. I don’t know how many of his fights you’ve watched, but he also has an excellent sprawl. undoubtedly, Kos will get him down at some point, but he will have to survive on the feet until then, and keep him there once he’s down. Kos’s only real dead cert way of winning is a long drawn out decision, clinching and top control, but 15 minutes is a long time to play with fire without getting burned. He has to make Daley tired or Daley will fined that opening, he can be really ferocious when he gets into it.

I don't think he will sub Daley

But he will GNP him. That’s IF Kos comes into this fight with a good game plan. I wouldn’t put it past him to stand with Daley. If Kos decides to fight smart this time(highly unlikely) this is an easy fight for him. I’ve never bought into the Daley hype, and won’t start now.

by jay. on Jan 19, 2010 10:01 AM EST up reply actions

I think he will use his wrestling

he truely would have to be an out right elbow licking retard not to. but as I said, Daley has never been stopped with strikes on the ground or standing. He is a really tough guy. I see a decision for Kos or a KO/TKO for Daley, I’ll be surprized if it ends any other way.

The list of things Kos should have done but didn't do in his fights is a long one.

He may just be “an elbow licking retard” LOL

His game plans are usually on par with the Diaz brothers. DUMB.

by jay. on Jan 19, 2010 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

Well At least I enjoy listening to your comments in the sparring...=)

I just think Kos’s wrestling is so far ahead of his sprawl. I think Koscheck can take anyone down at will in the ww division with the exception of GSP and maybe fitch, but I think he even got GSP down a few times in there 3 round battle. Daley as always is tough, but comparing his sprawl to Kos’s take down ability I think is on 2 different levels. While I think Shields is the stronger grappler, I think Kos is actually physically stronger and I think has a great chance. Outside of Shields, who is not on Kos wrestling level, he never fought anyone with Kos wrestling ability. I def. could see Kos getting a choke.

by Da Monkey on Jan 19, 2010 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know about Kos being physically stronger than Jake

Jake also fights at MW remember. As I said, Kos will undoubtedly take him down, I’m not saying that his sprawl is good enough to nullify the wrestling, but it will play a factor in making life more difficult for Kos and possibly making him expend more energy than he would otherwise, perhaps making him fatigue later in the fight, drop hands etc. All factors to be considered. Personally I think it will be harder for Kos to avoid Daley’s hands then it will for Daley to avoid Kos’s submissions. All Daley’s got to do is launch the right punch at an opportune moment, something he is excellent at. Kos has to wrestle Daley to the ground then work for positioning etc. whilst maintaing control looking for subs and not taking damage from the bottom.

I will agree in your logic...

It may tire out Kos, but I am don’t ever recall Kos looking tired at the end of 3rnd fights. I think working to not get taken taken down and having to get back up to his feet over and over again, could and will tire Daley, when you have someone with the wrestling pedigree that Kos has. I think he could shoot all day long and be fine, the whole thing is avoiding the right all day long. I think the control part and mainting position part is as natural and as easy for Kos to do as it is for Daley to launch that right. Just my opinion though. I realize it is more work, but when you have done at as long and are as good at doing it I think it is just as natural and easy. I will say though the right will come a lot faster then the sub! Either way thanks for making this fun! I don’t usually get to engage in so much back and forth before certain people start insulting or personally attacking and usually at that point it is pointless fodder!

Funny thing is, I actually hated Kos through most of his career and I find myself liking him more ove the last 2 years or so. I respect the fact that he is always fight ready and takes whatever fight is offered to him regardless of how short the notice.

by Da Monkey on Jan 20, 2010 7:36 AM EST up reply actions

I respect Kos

He’s great at what he does, and he has balls to fight the people he does, the way he does, but I still can’t like him, dont know why… just one of those things I guess. But I’m not letting that effect the way I look at the fight, just really looking forward to seeing it.

yer I agree it is nice to be able to discuss fights without any crap. As in, an actual discussion. In which ideas are traded as opposed to insults! I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for your posts from now on Monkey.

The one way Kos isn’t winning this fight is by KO.

He may submit him, he may take him down and pound him out, but he won’t Knock Daley out.

I’m taking Daley by KO, I see Kos pushing the action but getting caught, and we all know what happens whe Daley catches someone.

Rumble's grappling is piss poor

All he has is some decent wrestling, he has no BJJ skills at all whilst Semtex has a great sprawl and is a purple belt in BJJ. Both times that Rumble has been taken down in the UFC he has been submitted easily, the last time Semtex was submitted was by Shields who is an ADCC caliber grappler and it took him a while to finally get the fight ending submission.

I dont want Koscheck to win this one because all i see him doing is the takedowns and leave it up to the judges, Just like Rashad did against Thiago Silva at 108, and it’s not that fun to watch if fighters dont want to exchange with another fighter just because there good strikers and I cant see him KOing Daley and I know if Daley wins it will be a TKO or KO

Nobody has KO’d Semtex and Kos’ wild overhand right won’t be enough to KO him, Daley is a muay thai world champion and is arguably the best striker in the WW division (between him and Alves, though GSP’s striking is outstanding as well) if Kos wins this it will be by submission (unlikely) or decision.

Unless Koscheck is really as dumb as we all think he is he’ll take this immediately to the ground. Hs striking has obviously improved a ton since the ultimate fighter but he can’t match up to Daley in that regard. I really hope he keeps it standing and gets KOd, because if he’s dumb or delusional enough to forget what his strengths are then he doesn’t deserve to win.

So they are moving Evans and Page out of the co-main event?

I wanna see Daley's Muay Thai kicks...

Though I doubt he’ll use em against Kos. I don’t think Daley’s thrown a kick yet in the UFC but if you think his hands are good then when till you see him get going with his feet… Hopefully on Kos’s face, as I’ve never liked him and now just see him as a cheaty pussy eye-poking homo-bastard.

Have a look at -

“Paul Daley Cage Rage Highlights” on Youtube – when he gets motoring I don’t think many can stand with him. He’s yet to fully open up on someone in the UFC, usually takes a while to warm up first – they’re just getting KO’d a little too fast at present!

Yeah, saw McLovin...

Just missed the kicks :D Just have hazy memory of it (it’s on damn late here in the UK) – McLovin standing still keeping Daley at bay with the front kick then left an opening and got K the F out… Didn’t even look that hard a shot but broke his face according to the injury report.

The Brits are looking good at the moment, (ignoring Bisping for now) with Daley and Hardy moving up the ranks rapidly – Pearson, Winner and Etim starting to go through the lightweight division without many giving them serious contender status YET. Winner has top class striking and Pearson has huge potential as he’s undefeated and just manhandled the tough Aaron Riley with impressive all-round game. No challenge for BJ just yet but maybe 4 or 5 fights down the line if they keep improving at the rate they are…

I hope Kos gets his head knocked into the 3rd row...

Seriously he is by far the most annoying fighter imo….

+1 to Slugger and Mikey

Tito Ortiz: I think Chuck's lost a step, maybe i've lost a step also, but that's what makes the fight so exciting!

Why so much hate for Kos? He changed my perspective of him when he stood up and took any fight in 106. I had tickets for 106 and was coming from Toronto. That card needed help pretty badly and he stood up and beat Rumble who was a favorite in the betting lines. Not to mention he took that Alves fight last minute as well. Warrior in my opinion.

Warrior is an understatement

They dude is a stud! Fights often against top talent(most of the time) and has saved more than one card. As an employee, Zuffa couldn’t ask for a better person. I’m not a fan though.

16-4 and two losses where SD with GSP and Alves (which he took last minute). The Thiago loss does hurt his record
