Gilbert Melendez: 'I think I could do better than a lot of guys do against B.J. Penn'

Gilbert_melendez_medium

Props: Cagewriter

Quoteworthy:

"B.J.'s on another level. [But] I think I could do better than a lot of guys do against B.J. A lot of guys sit back and want to last with B.J. I'd rather get knocked out in the center of the ring and go for it, than sit back and try to figure it out. If things aren't working, I'm going to charge B.J. and try to knock him out. It's better than just running away and not being able to engage."

Undisputed Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez compares himself to the recent crop of contenders in the UFC who have all tried (unsuccessfully) to dethrone current division deity BJ Penn. "El Nino" currently has his sights set on Japanese grappling phenom Shinya Aoki following his triumphant win over Josh Thomson in an action-packed war at Strikeforce: "Evolution" back on Dec. 19 -- but doesn't mind fantasy match-making with "The Prodigy." Anyone think Melendez has a chance to upset the Hawaiian should they ever cross paths?

I'm so sick of

fighters not in the UFC talking shit about UFC champs… they can talk all they want because they know it will never happen. Shut your mouth and come to the UFC… you wont even be top 5

Agree Golddiggah

Diego did come charging in and try to set the pace with BJ. The first punch he took changed his mind. It would be no different with Melendez, except I don’t think he would last as long as Sanchez did. No one can beat BJ at 155, that includes you Gilbert.

I don’t think Gilbert would win, but honestly it’s impossible to do worse than Sanchez.

well, Diego shouldn’t be fighting at LW in the first place, he’d do better against BJ at WW where he’s got a little weight and strength especially in his legs.

fresh like uhh.

?

How did diego do the worst? By lasting more than 4 rds?

by Phenomenal Angel on Jan 18, 2010 8:10 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yea maybe. but kenny didn’t do much either diego had a cool uppercut in second rd and a few kicks. Still he didn’t quit the match was stopped.

Exciting 1 rnd

I think it would be an exciting 1rnd fight! with Gilbert getting KO’d by 2nd for sure.

by THORAZINE on Jan 18, 2010 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

what happened here was obviously Gilbert being asked about a potential fight against BJ. I think all LW’s in the world will be at a disadvantage against BJ, 155 is simply to light to bring the physicality you need to beat BJ

fresh like uhh.

by RoBerto. on Jan 18, 2010 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

Haha exactly

El Nino was very respectful here, he’s just confident in his own abilities as he’s on the run of his life. Gilbert is one of the few guys at LW that I see posing any threat to BJ at this point at 155 and he’ll continue to prove the doubters wrong when he beats Aoki. He’s got good striking, wrestling and BJJ as well as outstanding cardio and he’s improving every fight. BJ is still better than Gilbert at this point but he wouldn’t walk through him easily.

If by better

He means go more than 3 rounds… I doubt it. BJ is better EVERYWHERE than all LW’s around the world.

BJ put GSP in the hospital the first time. I could only imagine what he’d do now..unless GSP wants to cheat with grease.

Hey Guys.

He landed one punch in their first fight(broke his nose) and poked him in the eye. GSP controlled him for 13 minutes of that fight. The second fight wasn’t close at all. Just because BJ is beating up little guys, don’t get cocky. He is a small fish in the 170 pound ocean.

BJ couldn’t beat GSP once, even if they fought 50 times.

by BJPennfan on Jan 18, 2010 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

His corner quit.

It was the right move. No way Bj was winning that fight and no reason to keep taking a beating and risk your career. If his corner didn’t call it, he probably would’ve been ko’d or tko’d in the 5th.

by kden808 on Jan 19, 2010 12:43 AM EST up reply actions

...

He got smashed by the best ww ever, so he quit once, who cares, bj still is the best at 155 and held belts in 2 weights.
Yea but ur right we can deal with it.

true he did lose the 2nd fight and got smashed good

But i choose to follow a fighter that isnt afraid to move up in weight and doesnt cheat in fights. I wish that the other guy never would of had to go down the road of cheaters because i use to be a fan.

by BJPennfan on Jan 18, 2010 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

LOL

The guy might seem slippery because he is so fast. But do you seriously believe he was greasing? I see your point though, BJ isn’t the only one mentally fucked because of the beatings GSP dished out. lol

by jay. on Jan 18, 2010 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

ya i do

Bottom line the athletic comission admited to whipping a glob of grease off before stepped in the cage, and second watch the fight again closely, grrease was applied. I’m not getting into wheather it was intentional or not but had vasoline on him. That’s a fact

by LOKIE on Jan 18, 2010 10:35 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

But did GSP cheat?

We’re not discussing Phil Nurse.

by jay. on Jan 19, 2010 9:31 AM EST up reply actions

true he did lose the 2nd fight and got smashed good

You got that part right.

I choose to follow an athlete that is smart and honorable and that won’t find some lame excuses every time he loses. When he moves up, he’ll do it intelligently and meet success unlike Penn who wasn’t ready because he thought he could be a great ww just by eating bigger hamburgers. I also choose not to follow quitters who throw in the towel when the going gets tough.

by Yan117 on Jan 18, 2010 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

The bigger hamburgers part is funny. But he did get a belt while he was eating burgers up there.

by BJPennfan on Jan 18, 2010 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sure Hughes is very proud of that.

At least he had the chance to avenge that loss with a massive beat down. Do you remember what Penn’s excuse was back then? I do.

by Yan117 on Jan 18, 2010 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

He got hurt during that fight and he ran out of gas.

That is why he lost that fight. No shame in that Matt Hughes was a great champion

Is there anyone here who likes Bj & Gsp?

These two guys are soo different from their personalities to their fighting styles and it seems that if you like one then you can’t like the other. But, I like both these guys.

by kden808 on Jan 19, 2010 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

You're the only one I can think of

Not too many people like both guys. I used to like BJ, until he started all this crap with GSP.

by jay. on Jan 19, 2010 9:32 AM EST up reply actions

...

All this shit about GSP greasing is a ridiculous excuse.
If BJ is so great, he would’ve found a way around that, just like Fitch said.
Great fighters are the guys who can win no matter what.
Not that BJ isn’t a great fighter. He is. But citing any reason other than “he was the better man that night” for his loss is bullshit.
Fighters should be able to admit when they’re beat. BJ can’t, and while some find that an admirable quality, it’s only gonna lose him fans and make him look like more of an idiot when he keeps going back and getting his ass kicked off the same guy.

by ArlovsKang on Jan 19, 2010 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

Yup

GSP has BJ’s number, in much the same way that Chuck has Tito’s and Rampage has Chuck’s.
That’s the way it is now, and always will be.
Deal with it.

This guys hangs out with diaz brothers way too much!!!

“I rather get KO in center of octagon” sounds like he’s started a to do list! He got rocked in his last fight! BJ would FINISH IT!

by He'soutmikeHe'sout on Jan 18, 2010 3:17 PM EST via mobile reply actions

He dropped Thomson twice

That was a wild fight with Josh and El Nino got the better of the striking exchanges. Josh never had him in as much trouble as El Nino had Josh in. That performance was the best of Gibert’s career and I don’t remember him ever getting rocked.

by Amos14 on Jan 18, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Come on guys. He just has faith in his skills. What would you all be saying if every LW in the world said. “Yeah I am not good enoigh to beat BJ Penn but I just fight to be second best in the division.”

Nobody that has confidence will say it. Every LW including Florian, Stevenson, Diego, Sherk, etc will tell you that they think in a second fight they would beat BJ even though everyone should know they cant.

by AintNoSunshine on Jan 18, 2010 3:21 PM EST reply actions

I agree he has faith in his skills, but I’m tired of guys calling out guys that there is noway in hell they could fight. He knows he can sy whatever the hell he wants beacause he isn’t going to fight BJ. If I was Dana I would love to cross promote with strikeforce. Other than HW ufc would dominate.

by Phenomenal Angel on Jan 18, 2010 8:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

He did admit BJ is on another level. I like Gilbert but he hit it on the head… he’d get finished in impressive fashion. In my opinion BJ is so far beyond the rest of the 155 division it’s sad.

I have been watching MMA for 16 years and it is the best sport on the planet! Most of the people that post in these forums make me furious on a daily basis by being a-holes or just dumb as hell... then I look around and realize ahhhh I'm at home and am just as guilty as all of you idiots.

by soulkick on Jan 18, 2010 3:22 PM EST reply actions

Well...

At least Gilbert gave BJ credit for being on another level. Only one problem though… why on earth would you want to charge at BJ if things aren’t going well? As it is, he already makes his opponents at LW look like amateurs. Does Gilbert really think that BJ will finish him off fast? No, he’ll make your loss look embarrassing to say the least. I really do wish that other promotions’ champs would quit calling out UFC champs. It got old years ago.

by n4tacon on Jan 18, 2010 3:38 PM EST reply actions

I don't think he'd do any better then Diego.

There striking is about par, maybe even in the favor of the nightmare. theres no chance that gilbert takes bj down, i just don’t see anyway of gilbert winning. him rushing straight at penn would only make for an early night

Gilbert looks good in his pond. Like Carol Condit, once in the UFC, I think he’ll find he is not even in the top 10.

Still, would love to see what Gilbert is made of if he ever graduates to the UFC.

Misconstrued Comments...

I think what he’s trying to say isn’t that he’s gonna be “better” than the other guys in regards to fighting BJ, I just think he’s saying he’ll go in and fight BJ rather than go in with a tatical plan ala Florian and probably Edgar. Gil’s a scrapper. He loves to turn his fights into a scrap so I think that’s what he’d do and risk getting KO’d but at least go in there and fight BJ and put on a good show. He wouldn’t win, but it’d be a really great 1-2 rounds if he just went for broke.

He admitted BJ was on another level. Can’t knock a guy for thinking he can do well against another fighter. Shit, if you didn’t think that, you shouldn’t be a fighter.
