41-year-old NABO heavyweight boxing champion James "Lights Out" Toney (72-6-3, 44 KOs), who was in Memphis, Tennessee last month to attend UFC 107, tells FightHype.com that he's blaming promotion president Dana White for not taking his offer seriously regarding a switch to mixed martial arts. Perhaps Toney saw Ray Mercer put Tim Sylvia on queer street last year in Alabama and decided it was time to prove his power is more than enough to squash a former YouTube star and some past-their prime headliners. But even if he does, would it warrant the multi-million dollar payday he's looking for?

Thats it and thats all. The UFc usually has a base salary and then a win bonus and I’m sure thats what he would get offered. But 500K to a boxer is a “shit payday” LOL. Big name boxers fight on a card that has one big fight that collects 95% of the money handed out and their is no organization in control. As a fan we all see the sh^t boxing management and fighters are doing, as they hype up a lopsided fight and cash in millions and millions of dollars for beating on a much lower skilled fighter? Boxing fans are seeing the BS in boxing and boxing is slowly losing sponsorship and fans because of the greed and no structure boxing offers. As a fan we pay the UFC to control the match ups and fights we want to see and they are doing an excellent job but if you would rather see MMA go like boxing and fighters get paid multi millions for BS fights, your an idiot.

But I would prefer to see him fight a all around fighter as far as stand up fighters go Toney would do very well for the simple fact 99.99% of Toneys strength is striking and a skill boxers will be better than 99.9% of MMA fighters. yes their are leg kicks that will throw off a boxer standing up but Toney will have accuracy and power that will be able to knock out any fighter with one punch with the MMA gloves. You take the best striker in MMA and toney will be nearly as twice as good. Again with the leg kicks and a power striker Toney could easily be KO as well but the best way to Beat Toney with little chance of losing would be to get him tied up and down to the ground were he would stand almost zero chance. Yes Toney would be a big draw but toney is not worth millions to MMA right now you have to remeber on a UFC card there is 9 other fights including the undercard and lets sat the PPV goes from 1.2 on average to 1.7 with Toney it still wouldn’t be worth it. toney is just looking for a fat paycheck right now if he was really interested in MMA he would prove himself and still make a quarter of a million per fight.

It would have been good to see a former world champion from boxing compete in MMA and Toney is an entertaining guy. Unfortunately it sounds like he got greedy and asked for silly money. I don’t see any difference between signing Toney and signing a former champion in other martial arts like wrestling, BJJ, kickboxing or judo. The only problem with Toney is his age as he has few fights left in him but it’s unfair to compare him to someone like Shaq who hasn’t had success in a combat sport, in fact he’s had success in a sport that has no contact whatsoever.

Kimbo may have a loyal fanbase but that shouldn’t be the only factor in hiring someone. The guy is talentless and will get found out once again as soon as he faces anyone decent. Even Meathead has a decent shot at beating him.
Toney has had a very successful boxing career and has almost 80 fights behind him as well as multiple world title reigns in different weight classes. He is also a very charismatic guy and would be the first big name boxer to compete in the UFC. He would be a huge draw in MMA and actually has a fighting record as well. I’d honestly much rather see him in the UFC than Kimbo, though only if he’d accept the same contract as Kimbo currently has, anymore than that for a guy over 40 would be a waste at this point.

Dana did not offer him any money because he wanted James to turn down the fight. He knew buy offering little that James would not fight and and he would not have to take a chance on any of his guys losing.

As for Toney’s skills, yes, his boxing is great. How’s his wrestling? Even some of the weakest MMA guys have enough wrestling to get a boxer down. This is a no-win situation for Toney, not the UFC. jay hit the mark with what he said. No one’s going to start buying PPVs to see Toney. If that was the case, he’d still be in boxing. There is a huge rumor that he clearly brought in more than 500k for his first fight based on the bonus he go with the ppv sales. With the marketing that the ufc has. A fight with Dos santos vs Toney would easily bring in 750k viewers. Especially if the card had some other decent fights on it. To sit there and say toney is not worth 300 k for a good fight is crazy… The problem is, if for some reason he comes in to mma and wins then the ufc looks bad.

Toney is definately a master at handstriking. All boxers are masters of handstriking, but MMA is alot more mental than boxing. Toney can’t go out there and just think he’s gonna knock his opponents head off. He’s gonna be hesitant, he’s not gonna let his hands go. Even if his opponent keeps it standing, Toney won’t know when the takedown is coming. What about kicks? Has he ever checked a kick? Ofcourse he has the chance to ko anybody, but what happens when the guy shoots in for a double and gets the takedown…how’s the fight interesting anymore?
