Scott Coker: Gilbert Melendez vs Shinya Aoki possible for 'second quarter' of 2010

Melendez-aoki_medium
Props: MMA Fighting.com

Quoteworthy:

"The flipping off of (Hirota), I didn't really like that. I saw the arm break and it didn't make me feel good but the opponent could have tapped too. I think it was probably right on that line and he didn't want to tap and Aoki was pushing and pushing and the arm broke and it's unfortunate but it's not the first time in this sport that someone has broken an arm in an armbar. The gestures afterward were unnecessary, but does that stop me from having the thought of him fighting Gilbert Melendez? Absolutely not. I think Gilbert and him would be a great fight and it goes back to the sport. MMA is a sport and these guys should fight each other. Gilbert should fight the DREAM champion and our other weight classes should fight their other weight classes. Let's do it. There's been dialogue back-and-forth and I was told in the second quarter I would have access to Aoki."

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker reacts unflinchingly to the gruesome antics of Shinya Aoki following his performance at FieLDS Dynamite!! -- instead focusing on a potential champion vs. champion super fight across promotions that would pit his own Gilbert Melendez against the Japanese superstar. "El Nino" recently unified the Strikeforce 155-pound title in an exciting war with Josh Thomson at "Evolution" late last year and is expected to defend it on the upcoming Strikeforce/CBS card in April 2010. Will the "Tobikan Judan" answer the stateside call? Or choose to hide overseas ala Alistair Overeem?

I liked Kendal

But really don’t anymore. The Tito grave digging thing I think did it for me! Munoz is a beast at 85. this is a good fight, this card is looking amazing. I read they are building an arena/stadium just for this event!

agreed

185 lbs.: UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort*

Main card (Televised):

155 lbs.: UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar*
170 lbs.: Matt Hughes vs. Renzo Gracie*
185 lbs.: Kendall Grove vs. Mark Munoz*

And with a little luck it’ll stay like that and only get better

If by KO, you mean...

Aoki by a sick submission, then I agree.

What happens if

Aoki wins, goes back to Japan with the belt and doesn’t come back

Hah, did you just answer yourself?

Yeah, apparently they didn’t learned their lesson with Overeem. Regardless though, I’d love to see this fight. Aoki by middle finger rd 4

Then Shiny and Overeem can wear their belts when they go out boozing and whoring together and have a good laugh about the whole thing.

Probably a contractual clause (like UFC) where there an automatic extension if you're champion?

so he could go to japan but have to retun to defend his belt for as long as he keeps winning?

by SouthCaliStunNa on Jan 14, 2010 3:39 PM EST reply actions

first off

If he goes back to Japan it doesn’t really matter what the contract says (ask Overeem), also he’s a dream fighter anyways, and will be on loan to strikeforce. Second, Melendez trains in a good BJJ camp and has way better stand up, I think it’s a really good match up!

by kevjack115 on Jan 14, 2010 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, this is a fantastic match-up

El Nino has a very good chance of winning this and SF aren’t going to lose their belt if Aoki wins by any means, he wouldn’t be fighting for SF period if he had no interest in defending their title on their shows. This is an example of why co-promotion works as without it this dream match would never have happened, same with Diaz-Zaromskis and Lawler-Manhoef.

by David W-S on Jan 14, 2010 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

very true

I think UFC’s stance is they have the majority of top talent so they don’t NEED to cross promote as much as other organizations have to to get great match ups. I mean look how easy the last strikeforce was to predict (other than Smith/Le) when they don’t have much Japanese talent on the show

by kevjack115 on Jan 14, 2010 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

I don't want to get into this arguement with anyone again but

I agree David. Cross pro-mo works if you need it…the UFC doesn’t need it.

I agree that the UFC don't need it but if cross-promotion helps the smaller promotions put on stacked cards then I'm all for it

Everybody knows

the UFC as a business does not need to cross promote as they are completely self sufficient and are the biggest and best MMA org in the world. They make money that other organizations only dream about. If you want to make a point of proving that your fighters are better than all the other orgs fighters as Dana often talks about, then that can really only be done in one way. Just like thousands of others I am pretty content to watch UFC fighters only fighting UFC fighters, but without doubt I as far as the sport of MMA is concerned, I couldn’t see anything better than the best of one org fighting the best of another.

by Ade on Jan 15, 2010 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

if he’s “on loan” to strikeforce and were to win the belt would he not be obligated to defend it?

then again youre right, same situation with Overeem.

by SouthCaliStunNa on Jan 14, 2010 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

he'd be "obligated"

but how can u force him? and to strip him only makes your belt look less legitimate!

by kevjack115 on Jan 14, 2010 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

I've been waiting a long time for this fight

Finally El Nino-Aoki is going to happen, this should have taken place in Pride so it’s great that Coker is making this dream fight happen.

I’ve got Melendez by UD, I think that his striking and wrestling will be too good for Aoki and he won’t allow the BJJ master the chance to get this fight to the ground. El Nino has never looked better and is ready to prove to the world that he is an elite LW. Plus Aoki won’t be used to fighting in a cage or in the US and that could set him back.

Melendez got screwed last time he fought in Japan so im glad this one is here.

I wanna see bj Penn vs shinya

That should make Aoki humble, and not so disrepectful.

by Jesse13 on Jan 14, 2010 4:01 PM EST via mobile reply actions

in reality

Melendez could do the same (but he couldn’t touch Penn). Fact is Aoki will be small here in the states!

by kevjack115 on Jan 14, 2010 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

small size wise??? I agree...he doesn't even cut to my knowledge

I like to Aoki/Huggy just to see what the difference is

Aoki is pretty lanky and was a decent size WW in that tourney last year.

I think Melendez will try to KO him seeing how he has a bit of a glass chin, then he’ll quickly realize that Aoki doesn’t get fight to the mat in the most conventional way.

I'd like to see him fight frankie/tyson

see how he fairs against a wrestler. better yet let gray lay on him for 3 rounds, see how good his jitz really is.

Some other lw fights I'd like to see.

Sanchez vs Florian, Sherk vs Stevenson, Maynard vs Miller, Griffin vs Gomi.

Wouldn't mind

Seeing Gilbert grab an arm and doing some damage. Aoki’s last fight was BS.

Remember when he tried to avenge his unan dec loss to hayato sakurai at dream 09?

Then loses AGAIN by getting kneed in the temple when he was all fours. That shocked me… Considering he’s only lost 4 times.. I guess sakurai has his number
