I disagree that this will be great. Unless he’s bored or just milking it, Penn should end this farce in the first round.

Cote and Leites had bigger chances against Silva than Edgar does vs Penn

Penn will obviously be a huuuge favourite but im gonna bet an assload of money on him because he CANNOT lose in any way, its impossible for Penn to lose this fight.

Yes, anything can happen in MMA…… but the one exception is this fight.

hahaha

I agree, even if Penn’s odds are 10:1, I’ll still throw down a lot. There’s no way he loses; he could eat doughnuts and watch tv for the next 3 months and still win this one.

my only fear for this fight

is that, unlike BJ’s last few opponents, he A) doesn’t personally hate him or B) he knows this is a complete waste of his time. i really hope he can stay motivated for this pathetic matchup.

by wandwagon on Jan 13, 2010 8:47 PM EST reply actions

I don’t think his team will allow him to get away with not taking fights and his training seriously anymore.

by steve-- on Jan 14, 2010 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

also, how frankie gets to the fight for the belt

without ever having fought diego, florian or joe daddy is a lil silly

by wandwagon on Jan 13, 2010 8:50 PM EST reply actions

I agree

He didnt fight any top contender or number one contender

by AintNoSunshine on Jan 13, 2010 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

He's beaten Sherk and Griffin (and Franca when he was relevant)

Frankie is as worthy as anyone else right now and has beaten more top guys than Gray, although it’s funny that Gray’s biggest win is over Frankie. Everyone else that is good enough for a title fight has already been smashed by BJ at some point.

I love edgar but...

he is in no way, shape, or form going for beat BJ at any aspect of this fight. I would much rather see this fight some time next year. Would rather see Penn/Gomi II just for the spectacle of it (even though BJ would completely own him too). Bottom line, BJ is just on a completely different level then every other LW on the planet.

by ---Cole--- on Jan 14, 2010 8:47 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed BJ is a class above all other LWs

I’d just rather watch him smash someone knew rather than I guy that he smashed years ago, as if BJ could beat someone before he reached his peak and when they had then he’d murder them in 2010.

by David W-S on Jan 14, 2010 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

Not really… It’s a business decision on the part of the UFC. If Edgar fought any of those fighters, who have all already lost to Penn, he would most likely lose, which would make a fight vs Penn pointless, and as a result it wouldn’t happen, causing the UFC to lose the money it would have made on the fight.

This is not uncommon, as it happens all the time. This is the same reason why Dan Hardy is getting a shot at GSP so soon, because the UFC knows he’d lose to the top contenders.

by steve-- on Jan 14, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

To be fair to Hardy he beat Swick and Semtex beat Kampmann when they were supposed to be the next contenders

That makes Hardy a much better challenger than either Swick or Kampmann for GSP. He may not have beaten Fitch, Kos or Alves but he still beat the top contender as did his teammate. Besides if Swick or Kampmann could have got a title fight without beating the top WWs then Hardy deserves one now that they’ve lost.

April 2008 anyone?

Two of the biggests upsets I can think of happened that month the supposedly impossible happened. Remember this is still mma, penn is human after all.

by nathang on Jan 13, 2010 9:01 PM EST reply actions

He didn’t look like it when he was fighting Diego.

You’re right, anything can happen. But three things that I can see happening are:

Penn by KO/TKO
Penn by Submission
Penn by UD

I don’t see this lasting 25 minutes to a decision unless Frankie pulls a Kalib.

by P-Dub on Jan 13, 2010 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

First off, what upsets in April of 2008 are you speaking of???

Second, there is no example of any upset in history that would suggest that BJ has a chance at losing this fight. Short of him dying in the cage, BJ will win this fight for 100% sure. There is no chance that he will lose.

by steve-- on Jan 14, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

he beat sherk and griffen

Those are franky’s best wins. He lost to Maynard but the bully doesn’t wanna fight BJ Penn. BJ will never lose at 155. I think after BJ wins this one he will go up to 170 and fight someone like Fitch. I’d love to see him fight Fitch or Alves.

by hatteras on Jan 13, 2010 9:05 PM EST reply actions

For completely different reasons BJ doesn't want to fight Gray either

He was very critical of Gray’s talent and name recognition recently. I’m surprised that didn’t motivate Gray at all, he must really fear the Prodigy if he’s going to accept that sort of criticism from a supposed friend and mentor.

Fear has nothing to do with it

They are in fact good friends. Since when is giving an honest opinion/evaluation of a fighter considered to be unfreindly? Even Gray himself knows that he has much to learn. Any reasonable fighter would want nothing less than the truth from their friends, especially if that friend is also a fighter, and even more especially if that fighter is BJ Penn.

Gray accepts that criticism because it’s the truth, not out of fear.

by steve-- on Jan 14, 2010 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't be friends with someone who publically criticised me like that

He bashed his skills and personality and said that he wasn’t worth his time. There’s a difference between being truthful and being a dick and BJ was clearly being a dick in this instance. BJ talked more shit about Gray than Nate Diaz ever has and we saw how personally Gray took that.

2nd Rnd TKO

BJ will play with him for the first round, then get bored and end it in the 2nd. Frankie has good boxing but he is just too small for BJ. He should actually be fighting at 145.

by knowone on Jan 13, 2010 9:38 PM EST reply actions

I'm a Frank Edgar fan but...

He has no chance.. Sorry, but Penn is the man at 155 no one will beat him at 155 period. Sanchez was the last real challenge he had at LW it’s time to go back to WW. Not an immediate shot at GSP but give him a top 5 WW and when he wins people will see there’s no where else to go. BJ PENN vs GSP will be a LEGENDARY MMA trilogy that wil be spoken of in this sport for years to come.

O damn, where you been?

I agree, no one touches BJ at 155. If he moves to ww he can hang with some top 10 guys but not top 5 contenders.

Bj vs GSP

I think if Penn worked out right and put the weight on properly so he wasn’t fat and out of shape at 170 he would have a chance. He could probably do well defending the takedowns all night and trying to hurt Georges on the feet.

I said if he came in shape…If i’m not mistaken he defended the takedowns perfectly in the first rounds of both those fights. He was only eventually taken down because he got tired. Watch them again.

no it wont!!!

in order for it to be legendary penn has to win at least one of them, which he wont!! someone 0-2 does not deserve a third try im sorry!! trilogies are only good if its a rubber match

One word...SIZE

Not only is BJ better in every aspect of the game, but his size advantage is significant.

I agree with others that BJ needs to go to WW and fight in the Top 10. That would be interesting.

by DubNub on Jan 14, 2010 12:28 AM EST reply actions

Stay at light weight.

Have a few fights at ww if you must (I’m hoping for a Penn/Hughes 3). Maybe even have a 145 superfight with Aldo or Faber. But please stay at lw.

by kden808 on Jan 14, 2010 5:12 AM EST reply actions

i really hope

that bj can stay motivated and train hard. i mean he probabaly could take the next 3 months off and still win but i hope he finds some sort of motivation to get him to train hard

by AzCombat on Jan 14, 2010 7:10 AM EST reply actions

BJ cant be stopped

At least not now. The way he is training mixed with his skills. I don’t think anyone will stop him now in ww or lw. So i hope he moves up. But i don’t want to see him fight my boy Hughes cause i don’t want Hughes to retire witha loss.

Oh and one more thing and then im done with this

I like BJ because He doen’t cheat and he has the balls to go up a weight class. Peace

by BJPennfan on Jan 14, 2010 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

He doesn't cheat?

How do you know? Are you bj penn, who really knows who cheats and who doesn’t, for all we know he might be the biggest hypocrite out there. How do you know gsp “cheats” there is 0% hard evidence he does, if you have some please enlighten us, gsp must be good he’s fooled the UFC and all the states he’s fought in, other than heresay from sore losers. You have proof he takes steriods? asked moron nursed to rub his shoulders with vas? Seen him rub oil on before fights?. I’d hate to be on trial with someone as biased as you on the jury…..guilty until proven innocent. I know your a bj penn fan but your delusional like he is and most of his fans. All I know is bj has a big mouth..on tv anyways and talks a lot of trash. I have no idea what gsp is like in real life, he might be an a-hole I don’t know, I go by what I see not hearsay. There both talented fighters thats all I really know, gsp plays the good guy on tv and penn the bad guy……..In real life only those around them know there character.

by nathang on Jan 14, 2010 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

I didnt say any names...........

I didnt want to go there but he got me alittle mad. I was trying to be nice. And i have never said GSP is on the Juice. I have seen a group of fighters come out and say he was lubed up in their fights with him.. So im just going off their word thats all. Nothing to get worked up over its all good we shall see what the future brings for these champs.

by BJPennfan on Jan 14, 2010 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

welterweight?

I don’t know about that. I don’t see him beating Fitch or Alves. Even Koschek would give him all he can handle. He’s too pudgey at ww and that extra bodyfat slows him down, he definitely isn’t as fast at that weight. Yeah, he beat Hughes at ww but his game was so one dimensional, all gnp, no stand-up at all. Guys now realize the need to be well-rounded and the top 5 in the ww division are just that, plus A LOT bigger than BJ.

Penn had how long to prepare for gsp/penn 2????

LMAO, penn and his fans have unlimited excuses for this guy when he does poorly, he just got outclassed period and had no answer for gsp’s athleticism and style of fighting. Nothing is so lame as I should have been in better shape, blah, blah, blah. Penn is a great fighter and so is gsp. You can be in the best shape possible for you to be in but if your fighting/ wrestling a superior athlete you’ll get tired out and frustrated, everyone has a limit. Gsp has made most of his opponents look bad, so has penn, anderson silva, machida, the top fighters do that. On paper penn should smoke this guy with ease, edgar really needs to pull a serra here(catch him just right, sorry but anyone’s light’s can be switched off). I think penn is an amazing fighter one of the best pound for pound in the world but damn he’s a sore loser like most of his fans.

by nathang on Jan 14, 2010 2:54 PM EST reply actions

You guys are a joke!

As a fighter you’re not always going to be facing the GSP’s of the world. This is a sport. It’s about competition. BJ Penn needs to be concerned only about himself, about his legacy and his status as the No. 1 Lightweight fighter in the World. Everything else will take care of itself.

My point is we as fans should not be complaining because we see a fight as not being very competitive. Anytime you have a dominant Champion like a BJ Penn, there are going to be times when the match maker has to sort of look around for the next guy to challenge him. Maybe it won’t end up being much of a challenge. But at the end of the day, this is still a sport that is about competition and Edgar has done his do to get a title shot, who are we to say that he can’t have it or that he can’t beat the champion?

Anything can happen. Look at Jon Jones getting dq’d against Hamill. Look at Serra stunning GSP. So look, Penn needs to take care of business. Go out there and dominate Edgar, continue to cement your status as the best lightweight in the World and move on to the next challenge.

That’s sport.
