Junior dos Santos vs Gabriel Gonzaga confirmed for UFC on Versus 1: 'Vera vs Jones'

Junior_dos_santos_medium

Brazilian heavyweights Junior "Cigano" Dos Santos (10-1) and Gabriel "Napao" Gonzaga (11-4) have officially been re-booked to square off in the co-main event of the first-ever UFC on Versus event, which is scheduled for the Odeum Colorado in Broomfield, Colo., on March 21.

The two were originally set to tangle at UFC 108 on Jan. 2; however, "Napao"  was forced to withdraw from the fight about five weeks out because of a severe staph infection.

Pride FC veteran, Gilbert Yvel, filled in on short notice for Gonzaga and wound up on the wrong end of Dos Santos' third first round technical knockout inside the Octagon.

Before that, "Cigano" had cemented his place among the heavyweight big guns when he had former Pride FC star Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic pleading for "No Mas!" after a three-round drubbing at UFC 103. The hard-hitting monster is likely right on the cusp of his first opportunity to fight for a world title.

And a win over the promotion's former number one contender may just push him over the top.

Star-divide

Gonzaga, on the other hand, warmly welcomed Chris Tuchscherer to the promotion with a devastating first round ball bash at UFC 102 back in August. The Minnesota Martial Arts Academy-trained fighter was given time to recover; however, he returned to get utterly smashed shortly thereafter by a relentless "Napao."

It marked the third win in four attempts for Gonzaga. But the former number one contender has struggled against top competition. He'll try to shuck that label once again when he squares off against his fellow countryman on fight night.

UFC on Versus 1 is set to feature a ridiculous main event between dynamic light heavyweight strikers Brandon "The Truth" Vera and Jon "Bones" Jones. Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, Clay "The Carpenter" Guida, John "Doomsday" Howard, Sean "The Muscle Shark" Sherk, Spencer "The King" Fisher and others are also expected to be in action on what is shaping up to be a great card for the promotion's debut on the Versus network.

JDS is on a roll

But i think Gonzaga is his toughest test yet (besides maybe Werdum)

Will his streak end here?

by Lester The Pimp on Jan 13, 2010 5:07 PM EST reply actions

No chance

GG has the win over Cro Cop and that’s it. Every other time he’s fought anyone decent he’s gotten smashed, even by Barney freaking Carwin. The rest of his wins are over nobodies. Gonzaga is not beating dos Santos.

You can say the same of Dos Santos

Only difference is he had a flash KO of an out of shape Werdum. Neither guy can be counted out in this fight.

Do not. I repeat, do not, go to mma-core.com. I made the mistake of watching a couple UFC 108 bouts on there and I am still trying to get all the viruses of my computer. Ridiculous! You've been warned.

P-Dub...Keep trying

Keep trying and maybe, just maybe the whole “Barney” Carwin thing will catch on. Maybe you can write on a card and place under your pillow and the nickname fairy will pick it up and it will catch on.

Or maybe you can just come up with something actually clever.

I don;t even like the guy but jeeez…it’s not going to catch on.

First, I didn’t coin the nickname Barney. Second, I can write Barney in here and everyone on here knows immediately who I’m talking about. Everyone who matters anyway.

Gonzaga is turning into a gatekeeper for the heavyweight division. Beat Gonzaga, and you graduate to “contender” status.

The Jardine and Guida of the HW-devision

I don’t think JDS will fight for the title as long as nog is in the run for it though.

by peseg on Jan 13, 2010 5:21 PM EST up reply actions

?

They’re both proven finishers both have serious power, GG always gets it done if it gets to the mat. Sure he lacks heart but he’s got a good chin unlike jardine. JDS is undefeated and is always striking. I don’t see where either of them are hopping around and being “so unorthodox” and hugging to decisions while fooling everyone about how exciting they are.

Gonzaga is far from an easy win for anyone....

He has heavy hands, excellent kicks, and some of the BJJ in the HW division. He nearly finished Carwin, broke Couture’s arm, and knocked Cro Cops head clean off; that is from easy. JDS will have his hands full and it willbe far from easy.

by Da Monkey on Jan 14, 2010 8:33 AM EST up reply actions

kids on a tear

this will be a good fight, but the most impressive thing is, between werdum, cro cop, and yvel, no one has even made the guy take a step back, he has been walking through the ufc HW roster, no more easy fights, but they were never easy in the first place, this kid is just making very tough guys look like washed up no bodies. If Brock is gone, this guy will reign as champ for a while. GG is a great fight for him, if he walks through gabe then the sky is really the limit for this guy.

Kinda awkward though…if Nog gets the win over Cain it should put em in line for a shot at either interim or real champion soon enough…the same position as JDS…and JDS will refuse to fight his coach and training partner…could slow the division up

by irishlilpete on Jan 13, 2010 6:59 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Gonzaga does not suck

The first time I saw JD he was hitting pads on one of Dana’s blogs before the Werdum fight. Right then and there I said that guy will be HW champ. Almost no one inthe HW division can strike worth a damn and by strike I don’t mean hit hard. Most throw open door punches leave the chin out and none of them are skilled karate guys like GSP or Machida. Dos Santos can strike and has been fed other strikers so far since beating Werdum who has no stand up. He hasn’t had to fight a well rounded guy yet.

Gonzaga is well rounded and is probably better on the ground than standing. Yeah he had that glory kick on Cro Cop but that is not all…he also broke Carwin’s nose and dropped the guy. In his loss to Randy he fractured Randy’s arm with a kick and if not for his nose getting busted by a head-butt may have won that fight. I am pumped for this fight. I see JD getting the win but Gonzaga is good. If anyone is a one hit wonder it is Carwin not Gabe.
