Brock Lesnar's fighting future to be revealed next week via press conference

Brock_20lesnar_20001_medium

UFC President Dana White has revealed that both he UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar will hold a joint press conference next week in Las Vegas to discuss Brock's future as a mixed-martial-artist.

White confirmed the news to MMAfighting.com recently on a trip to New York, refusing to elaborate on the nature of the press conference, only saying Lesnar’s future would be out in the open. Confusing yet very positive reports have surfaced recently with Randy Couture revealing previous conversations with the champ and that he's already back in training and may be fighting by spring.

Lesnar required surgery to repair damage inflicted by intestinal diverticulitis. The promotion recently announced that number one contender Shane Carwin will battle former champion Frank Mir at UFC 111 in his absence and we may finally know by the end of next week if that bout will be contested for an interim title or the true title (if the Minnesotan is forced to surrender the belt in anticipation of a long or permanent absence).

Star-divide

In a perfect world, Lesnar would get fully cleared by his doctor and make his return in Boston on August 28 against the winner of Mir vs. Carwin or Nogueira vs. Velasquez.

Personally, I don't know what to think of this but I'm starting to assume the worst.  For some reason I feel a press conference is going to be for Brock to announce his retirement or give up his belt. I guess maybe this could be a publicity move to make it more dramatic for his return, but I've seen so many athletes give press conferences that were designed to announce their retirement.

I'm going to think the worst but pray for the best and hopefully we'll know more next week.

Anyone else care to speculate?

His skin..

His skin is so scandinavian that you can almost see through him. He is almost clear.

My guess is that the doctors won’t clear him because of his flat top.

All joking aside…I am guessing that the delay paired with the gag order on Dana means that they are having a marketing team write his farewell. Tear.

Belt up for grabs.....

Mir and Carwin will be fighting for the belt, winner of Cain/Nog gets first shot, if Dos Santos beats Gabe, he gets the next shot. Lesnar is done, and will insist his illness has nothing to do with prior steroid use.

by ---Cole--- on Jan 13, 2010 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

There is no pryor steriod use cole

The illness has nothing to do with roids anybody that has read up on it knows this and doctors have even stated this.

There’s obviously no conclusive evidence like a positive blood test of his past steriod use, but I think he probably did do them in the WWE.
If someone told you that your life depended on correctly guessing whether or not Brock has done steriods at any point in his life, almost everyone would say he has.

I think he did it in the WWE

But I don’t care. He wasn’t competing back then. He used them to put pretty muscles on for Vince. It was the only way he could make a pay check. If he’d used them to get a competitive edge I would care, but he was fake wrestling. Who cares?

by jay. on Jan 13, 2010 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

If there weren't so many deaths in pro wrestling then I wouldn't care either

However because of McMahon’s obsession with roided up monsters there has been an obscene number of former wrestlers dying under 50 and it sickens me that nobody is regulating that drug fuelled industry (WWE can’t be trusted to do it themselves as the Benoit and Signature Pharmacy fiascos prove). Almost everyone in WWE is on some sort of drug and it’s criminal that it’s been allowed to happen for so long all because wrestling is “sports entertainment”. Brock was lucky to get out as quickly as he did.

to be fair

there has been testing and suspensions for roids in WWE (Mysterio, edge more recently)

Not that it isnt a problem, and not that its theyre main concern, just playin devils advocate.

And althoughits fake fighting WWE is very taxing on the body due to the stunts and what not, steroids help with faster recovery from injuries. Whichb is a big reason for the use in WWE. Also the rockstar lifestyle that they live is taxing mentally and physically which results in a lot of the deaths and drug use and overdoses for some of the wrestlers.

dude.....i am

by brendog on Jan 14, 2010 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

Edge was only suspended when his name came up in the Signature Pharmacy investigation, WWE had to suspend everyone involved in that despite them all "passing" their in-house drug tests

I agree that the ridiculous schedule is making the drug use worse. Most of the recent deaths have been through overdoses on pain pills rather than steroids as they’re forced to wrestle all over the country about 3 or 4 times a week and don’t get paid if they’re injured (unless they’re a main eventer). It’s a very dangerous lifestyle.

Sounds like next week everything will get worked out

It may be as easy as He’s done and the winner of Mir and Carwin will be the new Champion and have to face the winner of NOG and Cain with JDS waiting for the next opportunity. It may be as easy as he will be back in spring and will face JDS. Dana also stated "I don’t know if it’s good news or bad news, it’s just news," White coyly stated. By the sounds of everything Brock and his management want to make the announcement for whatever reason we will find out next week.

Of coaurse Carwin could pull off the upset? he has alot of unknowns about his fight game but if those unknowns turn out to be strengths he very well may win as well he could always connect and leave those unknowns well unknown. If Carwin wins and NOG wins A Carwin vs. JDS and NOG vs Brock. thats as deep as I’m going to go and I pray your right about Brock returning anyway.

If brocks coming back it depends on when for what scenerio

I know for sure Brock will not want a tune up fight he will want the best, thats who Brock is and why I’m a huge fan of his.

Brock didn’t get any warm-up fights when he started in UFC, and he doesn’t need them now. There’s a possibility that Brock shits himself in the cage because of a leaky large intestine, but there is a much greater chance that Mir shits himself from sheer terror at having to fight Brock again.

JDS is the best boxer in the HW division, he'd give Brock fits if they ever fought

JDS would KO Carwin and Mir, he has far superior boxing to either of them and hasn’t even had to use his BJJ in a fight yet. He’d be a very tough opponent for Brock and Cain as well. If JDS ever gets a title fight then he’ll have earnt it after going on a long winning streak, because the UFC aren’t going to hand him a title fight for talking shit about Brock like they are doing with Carwin and Mir.

He would be on his back in a matter of seconds where his boxing would be rendered ineffective. And I could give a shit what sort of BJJ he has, Brock has no neck to choke, and his arms and shoulders are too big to get any sort of a sub on.

Mir caught Brock in a leg lock

It’s not impossible to submit Lesnar and if JDS can work on his sprawl and make it difficult for Brock to take him down then JDS has a good chance at getting the KO.

Thats easier said than done

For a big man Brock moves fast, much faster than JDS. JDS concentrating and worried about Brocks take downs will keep his striking to a minimum or at least much less than normal, he will also have to be more carefull especially moving forward against the big man. Brocks biggest strength is his his wrestling and aggression on the ground JDS may be good on the ground but no match for Brock. JDS has a punchers chance…….. I really don’t want to talk about this unti it’s confirmed Brock is coming back.

"He broke tim sylvia’s arm…...So what?" – Brock Lesnar

by Puck Head on Jan 13, 2010 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

His ankle is about the only part small enough to latch a sub on. He’s just too big and strong to get with an arm bar, shoulder lock or choke. Plus, he’s about 10 times better now than he was when he stepped into that ankle lock.

I'm not convinced that Brock is going to be the same beast that he was before his illness

His cardio is going to be a mess if he does come back and his weight loss will also be a big problem. Whilst he’s been recovering, JDS has been competing and training to be the best. He’s on a great roll and Lesnar is going to have big problems dealing with him. I want to see how JDS can deal with a top wrestler like Lesnar, Cain or Carwin but I’m confident that he could KO all 3 of them.

A striker like him he connects with a couple solid

shots sure David. And if he catches Brock or anyone for that matter it most likely will be game over. I think Brock has the speed advantage on the feet though that will make it tough for JDS to get the proper distance without lunging or getting to close to Brock were he will expose himself or Brock will get in close and latch on to him and into the grapple were Brock will wear on him.

On the ground or in the grapple I really feel Brock will work JDS or any other fighter for that matter(Carwin maybe?)…. I really don’t why I’m getting into this until we hear if he’s even coming back for sure or not my opinion may mean nothing next week. If he comes back David we will continue until then lets leave this a mutual stalemate please and thank you?

It's not that good, Werdum outclassed him on the ground

He also did nothing on the ground against Randy and couldn’t keep Carwin on his back. I doubt that he will go for the takedown, since the Cro Cop win Gabe has fancied himself as a striker. Whilst he has power, he still lacks technique plus he can be broken mentally if the fight doesn’t go his way, which is why Cro Cop aside he’s lost every big fight that he’s ever had. JDS has this one in the bag.

He did take down Cro Cop and actually did a lot of damage before the ref did a piss poor stand-up

Luckily for Gabe he was still able to capitalise with that crazy head kick, it would have been a travesty if that stand-up had have cost him.

What does SF have to do with this article?

Right now they’ve signed up to huge international deals thanks to M-1 as well as a network deal with CBS and a cable deal with Showtime (both much better channels than Spike and VS) plus they’re signing up world class fighters from Affliction (Fedor, Gegard), Elite (Diaz, Shields) and Dream (Jacare, Manhoef, Aoki) as well as other top talent (Hendo, Huerta) that the UFC couldn’t keep. SF are here to stay and no unoriginal insults or Dana rants are going to change that.

A lot of fighters get money the fans don't see and it states that on the post that show their salaries

Hell Brock might get 50K for making this press conference appearance. Dana believed Rua should of won so much that he gave him his 100K. It’s believable but if there is no way of proving it there can be doubt and always will be by some. I believe you kev I just think it’s better if you have valid proof though then there is no room for speculation.

Randy told us everything

I believe Randy over Dana any day. Randy’s the one guy who isn’t afraid of stealing Dana’s thunder. Dana is trying to build up the worst case scenerios so that the comeback is even bigger news. Notice Dana hasn’t responed to Randy’s comments. All is well and we just have to see what shape Brocks in when he returns. If you believe Dana that brock wasn’t 100 percent to begin with because he had the issue for a while then we should have nothing to worry about.
