UFC Fight Night 21: Brandon Vera vs Jon Jones official for Versus on on March 21
It's official.
Exciting light heavyweights Brandon Vera and Jon Jones will indeed collide at UFC Fight Night 21 at the Odeum Colorado in Broomfield, Colo., on March 21, 2010.
The announcement was made today during the WEC 46: "Varner vs. Henderson" broadcast on the the Versus network. As part of a recent renewal deal, the network will air two live UFC events in 2010, marking the first time that live UFC events will air on a national sports cable network.
And the promotion intends to kick things off with a bang.
Vera is coming off a razor thin decision loss to Randy Couture in their UFC 105 match back on Nov. 14. The Muay Thai striker was confident he had done more (and more damage) during his battle with "The Natural" in Manchester but it wasn't to be for the former heavyweight.
Prior to the Couture scrap, Vera threw hands at UFC 102 back on August 29 in Portland, battering former TUF contestant Krzysztof Soszynski on the main card en route to a judges decision.
If he can do the same to Jones, it will go a long way in re-establishing him as a force in the light heavyweight division.
"Bones" has been anything but brittle since making his UFC debut back UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy." In addition to pounding on Stephan Bonnar en route to a UFC 94 unanimous decision win, the collegiate wrestling standout submitted Jake O'Brien at UFC 100 on July 11.
In fact, Jones was on a one-way ticket to super-stardom until a controversial disqualification loss against Matt Hamill at the TUF 10 Finale ended his perfect winning streak at nine. "The Hammer" was nailed with a series of ruthless elbows, until a few 12-6ers found their way through and prompted the Mazzagatti ruling.
Jones has formally appealed the decision, but could do more to erase those bad memories with a convincing stoppage over Vera.
Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on UFC Fight Night 21 event as they develop, including more additions to the card, which will likely feature a great lightweight clash between Clay Guida and Sean Sherk, as well as a welterweight war between John Howard vs. Anthony Johnson,

I'm glad that Vera's getting the more relevant fight after getting robbed against Couture
Funny that this fight is on free TV on an obscure sports channel, Vera-Bones will be a much more exciting and significant fight than Couture-Coleman, yet the latter is a main event of a PPV. It’s shameful when a Fight Night has a bigger main event than a PPV.
I’ve got Bones by UD, he’s a much better wrestler than Vera and is the more unorthodox striker. He looked superb against Hamill and if he can keep improving under Greg Jackson and be more clinical and clean when he looks to finish the fight then this guy will be a killer, hopefully he doesn’t get robbed of a victory this time.
"Anderson Silva is the best fighter on the planet...any Anderson Silva fight that is on, people should be buying that PPV, not because he’s my fighter but you know what, he to me is like the Muhammad Ali of MMA...the UFC has been around since 1993, nobody (else) has 10 consecutive wins in the UFC. Anderson has had 10 fights in the UFC, only 1 has ever gone to a decision."
Ed Soares on why Andy is the best fighter in the world
Bones finishes him.
He’s gonna start developing his finishing instincts at this juncture of his career IMO. I think he’s probly very confident in the creases of his game. Striking wise i still think Vera has the edge there but this will be a straight TD, GNP game after testing the waters in the standup.

I don't think so...
Vera will be tested real early by Bones. Of course he’s nothing Vera has ever seen before, so he’ll be a bit dazzled by his style. Once he gets battered a li’l bit on the stand-up, he’ll realize that he also has the game to back up his striking so there’ll be a li’l bit of toe-to-toe action.
That’s when one of ’em realizes that it all has to end on the ground. Bones has the advantage in the wrestling department methinks, so Vera will have to use his jitz to get better position, and then BAM!! Fights over, Vera wins. It could even end on the feet!!

Even though..
Vera trained as a olympic greco alternate, there is a few things i think Bones has that Vera doesnt. He can pull the trigger when he needs to, his timing is better, and he is stronger. On paper, Hamill was a better wrestler, but Bones man handled him. Bones is also very strong mentally. Vera has seemed weak in the mental strength aspect as of late. Veras one of my favorite fighters but i just think he will end up being a stepping stone.
not really an obscure channel
VS is available across most of the US. problem is that Direct TV didnt want to keep giving Comcast money to broadcast because they had to rent it from Comcast, who owns the actual channel. Im happy about this announcement because i dont get Spike in HD in my area but i do get VSHD… so yay!! finally get to see some UFC in HD without paying $55 for it
Great Match up
I think Bones is going to win too he is with out a doubt the best young up and coming fighter but Vera even though not elite he’s just below and a a couple steps up from Hammil I don’t think it’s going to be a blow out but possibly second or third round TKO.
Bones who?
Jon Jones is the most over hyped fighter in the UFC. The guy hasn’t beaten anybody to deserve the credit he is recieving. Stephan Bonnar and Eric Schafer are both C-league fighters and Matt Hammill is far from superior competition. People say the Bones’s striking is so diverse…I think all it is is fancy strikes thrown that never find their mark. Brandon Vera could have easily won that decision against Couture, especially if both Machia and Bisping could rob both Shogun and Hammill on UD’s. Let’s face it Vera is more proven, more seasoned, and more well rounded. Vera’s striking is more technical and his BJJ is above what Bones has seen to this point. I think Vera easily out points Bones on the feet. Bones’s wrestling is soooo good? Since when does wrestling at an Iowa Community College make you world class? HA! Child please.

matt Hammill
is not a world class wrestler. He is a div 3 wrestler…

good points...
but there’s no denying Jones is a superior brand of athlete, one of the most naturally gifted newcomers that we’ve seen in a long time. Yeah, he hasn’t gone against top competition, but who has Vera beaten recently? Jones demolished Hammill, who I’d put slightly above Soszynski. It’s a good test for Jones, who just showed he can beat a fairly one-dimensional grappler. In Vera, he faces a fairly one-dimensional striker. If he gets past him, then it’ll be time to put him up against someone with a more complete game, maybe someone like Rashad or Lil Nog.

you’re right in saying that Jones hasn’t had any big fights and hasn’t beaten anybody yet, but instead of just looking at his record for impressive names, try looking at the content of his fights, he toyed with Bonnar, O’brien and Hamill, he looked exceptional in all 3 fights, he has great trips, throws,TDs and TD defence. I firmly believe that he could take down almost anybody at 205, with ease.
I think all it is is fancy strikes thrown that never find their mark.
how many times have you seen somebody get dropped with a spinning back elbow? probably not very many, but he did it to Bonnar.
Also when you take into account the fact that he is only 22 yrs old!!! and trains with Greg Jackson, arguably the best camp in the world… This guy is future champ material, plus I don’t know what you mean about Hype, the UFC haven’t really hyped him much at all, hype would mean being on a PPV by now.
"OH GOD THAT'S DISGUSTING! HE BROKE HIS FREAKIN' ARM"
"hey man that's the business, we're not figure skating"
I underestimated the deadly skills of one of the greatest HWs in the world, Frank Mir. I wrote that because I lost a bet but honestly, he really did impress me. I'm well on the Frank wagon

Naw man..
What I’m saying is thinking that this dude can’t hang with the upper eschalon in the 205lb weight class is completely insane. That’s one of the most stacked divisions in the UFC…Bone’s resume really isn’t that impressive and neither are spinning back elbows that drop STEPHAN BONNAR. Hell after Bonnar gets beat in his next fight he’ll be working at 7-11 for a living.

Quit reading records and watch the fights
You don’t judge talent from reading a mans biography. Watch the way his opponents don’t have an answer for anything he does. If you don’t see talent in Bones you aren’t a good scout.
"He#s the WWE champ and with out a doubt should be ranked higher than any other man in the UFC. "-Puck Head, LOL.
Negative.
How can you say Jones is a superior athlete? Off what basis? Hype. That’s it. He hasn’t fought anyone, period. Vera on the other hand has went toe to toe with some of the best the UFC has to offer. Mir, Sylvia, Couture, Jardine, Werdum, Couture, and I’m sure I’m forgetting someone lol. Either way he might have not of won all of those fights, but at least he’s fought elite competition and we can accurately evaluate him. Vera smokes this guy and sends him back to the undercards.

xxBAxx816 We will find out won't we and if Jones wins against someone who has fought against elite competition
win or lose. Your right on the experience and calibure part, Vera is a step ahead of the Hammil but he is the next step. I don’t know if you ever watched Jones but the only thing that has been hyped on him that I’ve seen is his athletic abilities wich are amazing and should be hyped he is possibly the best athlete as faraq as size, speed and strength go he has the entire package. But just because your a great athlete doesn’t mean your going to be a great fighter and we will see how good of a fighter Jones is against a fighter that is just below the elite and I’m pretty sure Jones will make you change your opinion.
so there versus events are all on the score from now on?
anyone post a link or give more info to the deal they signed with the score?
"I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was."
-who else?
can't breathe in Denver
Great fights lined up in a great town with great fans however, Denver is where a lot of fighters gas out early. Hope it doesn’t happen but even my man frankie edgar gassed there when he fought Maynard and he never gases out. Its the main reason he lost that fight.
Old enough to know better, young enough to enjoy it...
