Report: Takanori Gomi signs UFC contract

Takanori_gomi_medium

Former Pride FC lightweight champion and promotional posterboy, Takanori Gomi, has signed a multi-fight deal to compete inside the Octagon under the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) banner, according to MMAFighting.com.

In his heyday, "Fireball Kid" was considered perhaps the best lightweight fighter on the planet. He has struggled recently, however, losing two of his last four matches to competition that is far from elite.

Nonetheless, Gomi is a fantastic and exciting addition to the talent-rich 155-pound class, which is currently dominated by division champion, B.J. Penn. Gomi and Penn actually went toe-to-toe at "Rumble on the Rock 4" back in 2003, with "The Prodigy" coming away with a convincing submission (rear naked choke) victory.

Is a rematch on tap sometime in 2010 if Gomi can put together a few wins?

Rest assured UFC President Dana White and Co. view Gomi as an instant threat to the title ... so don't doubt it. As it stands now, no official announcement or potential debut date/opponent is known at this time.

Gomi most recently competed at Shooto: "Traditional Final" on May 10, 2009. He thoroughly dominated Shooto Welterweight Champion Takashi Nakakura from the opening bell, dropping him in the second round to record the knockout victory.

Could this impressive performance signal the rebirth of his career and be a sign of future success?

It's possible. And if it does we'll likely get to enjoy it on several upcoming UFC pay-per-view (PPV) event telecasts.

More on this breaking news as it develops.

Florian Would Destroy the Fireball Kid

I dont see him beating any of the top lightweights in the UFC

Pound for Pound top 10

1. Anderson Sliva
2. GSP
3. Fedor
4. BJ Penn
5. Lyoto Machida
6. Jose Aldo
7. Brian Bowles
8. Miguel Angel Torres
9. mike brown
10. Jon Fitch

by NorCal Mexican on Jan 1, 2010 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

no offence NorCal but your top 10 p4p list is straight up worthless. Torres, Brown, Fitch, Bowles has no business on a list like that.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

Really whats your list?

Pound for Pound top 10

1. Anderson Sliva
2. GSP
3. Fedor
4. BJ Penn
5. Lyoto Machida
6. Jose Aldo
7. Brian Bowles
8. Miguel Angel Torres
9. mike brown
10. Jon Fitch

by NorCal Mexican on Jan 1, 2010 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

Torres isn’t top 10 anywhere, i cannot understand where the hype comes from around that guy. it’s because he has tons of wins in a weight class no one really cares about, his skill level is nowhere near the best fighters in the world.
Shogun is about 100 times better fighter than Bowles, Torres, Brown, Fitch.
and If you put Brown and Fitch in there you might aswell put Sherk in there, their only real strength is wrestling and that’s not enough. a guy like Kenny Florian is hell of alot more skilled than those guys too.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

wow

Roberto is an idiot. I’ll be the one to say it since nobody wants to be banned… but wow. On so many levels.

a ton of guys

I don’t think you understand how you put together a p4p list. It’s not the most succesful fighters in each weight class with the best records or whatever, it’s about technique and actual fighting skill.
Thiago Alves is more skilled than Fitch, Nate Marquardt, Rampage, Rashad, Shogun, Cain Velasquez is more effective and inflicts more damage with his wrestling style so does Dan Henderson. Florian is better too. there’s a ton of guys. only thing Fitch has working for him is size and wrestling, he isn’t dangerous anywhere.

sometimes the beauty is in the attempt.

by RoBerto. on Jan 2, 2010 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

Alves is more skilled than Fitch

Is that why Fitch dominated him?

Agreed

Florian and Sanchez would easily beat him. BJ would just kill him. Give him Guida, Sanchez or the other Diaz brother first. He could be have the chance to lose to both Diaz brothers. Nice.

Total agreement with the top 6 p4p

"Anderson Silva is the best fighter on the planet...any Anderson Silva fight that is on, people should be buying that PPV, not because he’s my fighter but you know what, he to me is like the Muhammad Ali of MMA...the UFC has been around since 1993, nobody (else) has 10 consecutive wins in the UFC. Anderson has had 10 fights in the UFC, only 1 has ever gone to a decision."

Why not syd, the fireball kid still got it and he still one of the best LW in the world plus the UFC need contenders for BJ in the LW division. He fit right in the mix and a fight with Florini could determine were he stand in the division. It would be bettter than puting him against a can like Guillard or a damn wrestler like Guida. His past losses were due to demotivation for training and he took Kitaoka too lightly. Now that he’s gonna be here he will be training with far superior guys that he had at Rascal and that will help him to stay focus on the training. He was at AKA the other day…if he can go there again more often, he will be on top of the division again in no time. He can’t have a better place than AKA to train against wrestlers for preparing himself for a division that is loaded of them (wrestlers). Since 2008 that I’m saying that the best fights for him would be in the UFC. Now that he’s here…he will be a real threat to anyone in the division. The guy got heavy hands and he got a good stand up. He also got good wrestling, decent jits and he’s really fast too. Man I still think that he’s neck to neck with BJ for the best LW ever and like I said the other day, if BJ would win a couple more fights he could surpass Gomi. This is awesome news, we can’t have better than have both of them in the same org and in the same division. If they both win their next few fights we will finally have the rematch and know for sure on who’s the best LW eva.Great move by Dana to bring Gomi to the UFC and it’s not 2 years too late IMO.

by Alpha Male on Jan 2, 2010 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

??? . . .

He didnt surpass gomi when he beat him, badly. . . . and id say fighting pulver, stevenson, sherk, florian and sanchez and finishing all of them at 155 in a row (we shouldnt mention gsp unless gomi is willing to fight him as well, i wonder how that would go lol) did the trick that beating gomi didnt to you. He surpassed gomi years ago, when he surpassed the 155 weight class. beating gomi and hughes back to back to become the best LTWT and WLWT in the world in one year, in 4 rounds didnt do it lol . . . what about moving to 185 and beating an undefeated Gracie right after that, hows that. but yea, bj has the work to do . . . gomi did beat nick diaz by dq didnt he.

so bj isnt the best 155er in the world . . . thats your point, and a guy that bj beat down within a 3 round time frame (didnt even need championship rounds to finish him) is the best. and that was a 7 year ago bj, bj now . . . lol, and im the delusional one here. you’re not jeremy jackson so dont act like your words are the last and all knowing, they are very far from it, especially on this topic. Awesome news

Gomi is a big name and this signing is long overdue, seeing how BJ has dominated the LW division it couldn’t have come at a better time. That being said Gomi is not the fighter that he once was and I doubt that he’ll get the big wins necessary to earn a title shot and if he does he’ll just get submitted by BJ again.

Gomi is still a great fighter

I’d love to see a rematch between Bj and Gomi. I suspect Gomi’s first opponent will be someone like Joe Stevenson. A match with Gomi and Kenflo would be good too but I wanna see Kenny rematch Diego before that. A fight with Gomi and Nate would be interesting too.

A lot of hype..

If this would of happened 3 or 4 years ago I might be a little bit more excited. However, this guy has made a name for himself by beating subpar japanese competition. His first fight in the UFC will be make or break for him.

Wow….Gomi seriously?? Avoiding the top LW’s AGAIN first he goes to SEngoku to hide from them now he goes to the UFC since Dream&Sengoku are crosspromoting….

Confused...

So between BJ, Diego, and Florian, who do you think will expose him worse? I think Florian and Diego would give/beat any of the top 5 with the exception of BJ. Diego is not even in the top 10 on sherdog and I think gives aoki a lot of trouble and has a good chance at beating Alvarez. Florians BJJ is easily on Aoki’s level and with his standup he beats Alvarez and Aoki. So who is Gomi running from? The UFC has more top 10 LWs and has the LW to beat in BJ.
