Answer me this?

IF - IF Diego scores a win over BJ, any type of win be it KO TKO or UD/SD, than do we want to see a 170 showdown vs GSP?

The UFC can thank me now – Follow the Greg Jackson connection and the UFC could really get a spin going.
Or do we rather see Diego and Team Jackson patch things up and come together so GSP and Diego can train together and rule the 155/170 roosts for the forseeable future?

Most of us need to be reminded what we already know before we need to be taught a new lesson

by Bigger Zino on Dec 8, 2009 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

?

What are you talking about? Are you suggesting that Diego 1) will beat BJ, 2) Rule the 155 lb division despite barely getting by huggy, 3) will be so dominant that he goes up for a super fight with GSP?

Just checking.

barely getting by huggy?

I hope that was a joke, the fight should have been scored 30-26 as he clearly won all three rounds and dominated him completely in one round to get a 10-8.
I think he could beat BJ this saturday, and i’m 100% sure that he would be a better challenge for GSP’s title than say Fitch was who isn’t even close to Sanchez skill level, and only has one strong side of his game where GSP is the best.

I don’t think he should move up and fight GSP if he wins but if it happened he would have as much of a chance as anybody or better than many of GSP’s previous opponents since he’s clearly more skilled than guys like Serra, Fitch, Hughes.

by RoBerto. on Dec 8, 2009 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

Roberto

I agree with almost everything you said. Diego beat Huggie like he stole something. Guida just would not go to sleep. Diego is a monster, and people continue to doubt him. He’s the Rodney Dangerfield of MMA. He does have a small chance of beating Penn, I wish to God he does. I would choose Penn in this fight, his will to fight and beat GSP at this point is stronger than Diego’s quest for the belt. BJ is a hungry and motivated man. That spells trouble for Sanchez. Diego can’t knock him out and can’t hang with him on the ground.

The thing I disagree about is the comparison to Fitch and Hughes. When Hughes was the Champ and fighting GSP, that version of Matt Hughes would kill Diego today. And John Fitch is too good a wrestler to lose to Diego. Do you think Diego could knock him out or tap him? I think neither. Fitch would lay on this guy for 15 minutes and Diego couldn’t stop it. Diego is in the right division now and if he gets past BJ he has a lot of potential fights I wouldn’t mind seeing.

Glad to be free from Intro's tyranny.

true

wow jay i wrote a whole arguement to why diego is better than fitch and i just remembered they already fought

by hamsterwheel on Dec 8, 2009 11:56 PM EST up reply actions

That's where you're wrong jay.

The best fighters of today would beat the one dimensional old versions of Hughes, Liddell, Ortiz that dominated their divisions in their prime. It’s just how it goes in such a new and growing sport as MMA where better and better athletes and new talents keeps coming into the sport, the standard of the skill level and wellroundedness you need to compete at the top today is just higher, lets also be honest here neither one of Fitch or Hughes are specially talented anywhere, they’re both results of hardcore training which wrestling is, sure they have size and strength but a guy like GSP is a much bigger beast who’s much better at the one dimension those guys have and totally owns them in every other aspect of the game.

What you need to understand with what im saying is also that Sanchez beat Fitch and most importantly is a more talented and dangerous fighter who does very well anywhere the fight takes place, whereas Fitch only has his one style of wrestling and hold position to get a decision win, to offer! once the refs learn how to score, the “safety first” style of fighting won’t work and he’ll need to develop an own game and offense to win fights.

by RoBerto. on Dec 9, 2009 2:14 AM EST up reply actions

Sanchez brings the whole package.

He can for sure hang with BJ on the ground, and he’s just a better bigger athlete that sets an incredible pace, I think Diego can tire BJ out so he breaks mentally, just like he did at WW against Hughes and GSP, and finally just take him down and pound him from the top. It’s gonna be a close fight and both guys have a good shot at winning, BJ has a little advantage of the judges usually going with the champ.

Ask yourself this, Can BJ knock Diego out? or submit him from the bottom? My answer to that is NO, a big reason why he won’t be able to rock Diego is because he’s mostly throwing jabs these days, he’s not going for KO’s.

by RoBerto. on Dec 9, 2009 2:34 AM EST up reply actions

bj has more power then diego

If anyone is going to get knocked out its diego…..and when is the last time bj went to the judges score cards…..and if history repeats itself he would get screwed by the judges witch has happened to him a few fights

by GOLDIGGAH on Dec 9, 2009 2:45 AM EST up reply actions

I won't argue with you

about the decision in the Fitch fight because I haven’t seen it. But to say Diego “won” is a bit disingenuous. Also Fitch is way better than he was back then.

I will argue with you

But you don’t understand… these professional judges that are licensed and have studied MMA for years don’t know how to do thier job like RoBerto. Maybe one day they start to read his blog and reverse all of their decisions. Until that day comes, Fitch controled Diegos hyper attack, GnP’d him, took him down at will, and was never put in anytype of danger from Deigo… But if you score a fight on Yes Cartwheels they Deigo took it 30-27.

by SDA on Dec 9, 2009 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

SDA, please try to be serious?

Never put in any kind of danger? and the most childish and unintelligent argument of them all to top it off “these proffessional judges that are licensed and have studied MMA for years don’t know how to do their job” Apparently not, it’s been pretty evident these last 3 or 4 UFC’s. Fact is they haven’t even figured out what scores more in MMA, but right now the judges are totally biased towards certain fighters and also good wrestlers that can hold position without doing anything, they wouldn’t know BJJ works from all position’s even if it caught them in a f’in triangle choke.

I don’t recall any part of the fight were Fitch was close to taping or being KO’d (GSP was a different story). And yes the judges are licenced and have followed MMA for years. I remember Diego trying to grab onto anything that moved, locked up a weak choke and then Fitch stood up and slamed Diego. If Diego would work some take down defense I think he could have won the fight.

by SDA on Dec 9, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

He did win frosnt1

And where has Fitch improved? I don’t see any improvements in his standup or offense on the ground, he’s about the same to me.
Diego has dramatically improved his standup game and is way more dangerous with his jits than Fitch is. Yeah, he’s not as big so he’s likely gonna end up on the bottom, but fact is also that he chose to drop down to his back going for submissions in that fight, and as a punishment for trying to finish he ended up on the bottom where he kept coming. I don’t see how that’s fair judging or even if they know anything about BJJ.

by RoBerto. on Dec 9, 2009 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

But we all know how the judges work

Diego does too, he realized he was never going be able to get the nod on the scorecards when he ended up on the bottom against bigger fighters like Fitch so he dropped a weightclass.

by RoBerto. on Dec 9, 2009 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

Fitch's skill level no where near sanchez????

Is that why fitch beat him when they fought???? and stop talking about diego at WW because he already couldnt win in that division so he had to cut if he wanted to be at the top of a division

by GOLDIGGAH on Dec 9, 2009 2:41 AM EST up reply actions

you don't get it do you?

Fitch only has one strong side to his game, his wrestling and size but size is not a skill. granted it’s good to have. but wrestling is the one and only thing he beats Sanchez at ‘cause he gets out jitsed on the ground by Diego everytime, kinda like in their first meeting where Diego had him in several submissions, all Fitch did through the entire fight was getting out of trouble. You can’t become the best without any real offfense, Fitch offers zero offense.

by RoBerto. on Dec 9, 2009 7:55 AM EST up reply actions

I think Burkmen, Alves, Roan, and Lugi would say fitch offered an offense in thier fight… If Fitch is so weak why can no one outside of GSP beat him???

Mir is seriously obsessed with Lesnar, he may not be overlooking Kongo but he spends a lot of the time talking about brock. He looks bigger then ever, he’s changing his body and style to be able to beat Brock. He’s a cocky bast@rd but you have to respect his determination. Just hope Lesnar is 100 percent when it happens.

Also laughed when BJ called Kenny a weasel.
I did not laugh at anything Mir said, what a effing tool. Please Please Please Kongo knee this guy in the nuts and then KO him.

You saying Mir is going to destroy Kongo? Get that shit outta here. Mir is garbage. He isn’t getting bigger or stronger. He’s getting fatter. He’s been sitting in his basement, crying, hating and plodding. His head isn’t in this fight. His head is on The Brockness! He’s jealous and wants the belt back. He is getting KO’d in the first round. BOOK IT.

Glad to be free from Intro's tyranny.

Well Mir could beat Kongo...if...and only if...

Kongo plays stupid like he did in the Cain fight. He should be picking these opponents apart with his long range and better than average striking. But the thing is that he plays dumb and falls into a realm not familiar to him, the ground!!

Like he said, all he really needs is one takedown. He can survive on his feet. Kongo cant keep up on the ground.

say what you want about Mir but he attacks very well with his Jiu jitsu.

People must be out of their minds to say that Diego tooled Guida, that was probably the worst decision i’ve seen this year aside from Shogun/Machida. Sanchez got totally out grappled and controlled after the first round and it really should be Clay that’s getting to face BJ instead of him facing Florian.

by Raker on Dec 9, 2009 5:21 AM EST reply actions

What are you talking about?

Diego knocked down Clay in the first round with a head kick, making the first round a 10-8, and was more active offensely from that point, throwing more strikes off his back and going for submissions. All Huggie did was get the takedown and hold on to Diego from guard, if you don’t do anything on top then you shouldn’t win the round because there’s more to the sport than simply being on top, the whole point of a fight is to be the aggressor and do damage and all of the aggression and damage came from Diego. This is MMA not wrestling, the sport isn’t about who can get on top of the other guy. The only person other than you that had Guida winning that fight was him.
