I'm not privy to the pre-fight history between these two but...

Did Hirota bone Aoki’s mom or something? Damn. That was really uncalled for.

aoki being his usual classy self

Hes got great subs but he does dumb shit like that allthe time. I cant wait till he gets his ass beat by an american

Seriously.

I cant wait till he comes to the states, loses those gay ass tights, and gets his face beat in by BJ.

he's going to strikeforce

so he doesn’t have to face BJ! But you’re right, most Japanese “superstars” come here and are average!

by kevjack115 on Dec 31, 2009 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

The Japanese don’t cut weight like Americans do. So when a Japanese guy in the LW class actually weighs 155, he’ll be fighting someone who outweighs him by 10%.

So...

all that means is that we would have Miguel Torres or Brian Bowles…. maybe even Benevitez beat the hell out him.

UFC

I still think he is borderline top 5 in the UFC

by PHISH NATION on Dec 31, 2009 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

IN the UFC that could be true.

But give him guys outside of it and’ he’s gonna be in big trouble.
Hirota is a nobody in North America anyway, so feed Aoki guys like Torres or even the bigger lightweights like BJ or someone well versed on the ground like say someone like Nick Diaz, and I’m sure he would not manhandle those men like he did to Hirota here…

The Japanese need to learn how to weight cut

Like it or not it’s a huge part of the sport and most of the top stars from Japan come in far too small against the top Western fighters. Until Eastern fighters change their attitudes towards their weight top fighters like Sexyama, Aoki and Chonan will struggle to beat the best opposition from the West simply because they’re outmuscled. It’s really frustrating watching these top fighters compete against much bigger fighters, if you don’t cut weight properly then you’re never going to be the best in your division, unless you’re a freak like Fedor who can smash the bigger guys.

As for Aoki he showed why this fight was a complete waste of time and why he’s an arrogant dick. He’s great to watch compete but like BJ ruins it for himself by saying or doing stupid shit. Yelling at fighters after you’ve broken their arm is the least sporting thing that you can do and sets the sport way back, this sort of thing should be punished severely. Hopefully Aoki-Kawajiri can actually happen next now that they both beat their Sengoku opponents after Gilbert gets his shot at smashing Aoki in SF. War El Nino.

by wandwagon on Dec 31, 2009 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

Okami is a big MW, the others look tiny. Sexyama almost lost to Belcher purely because he was half his size, that’s why I was so worried for him when he was supposed to face Wandi. He should be at WW in my opinion.

it’s fucked up he got his arm broke but giving the guy the finger like that after breaking his arm was just priceless LOL

by Akabane on Dec 31, 2009 12:49 PM EST reply actions

Aoki never wanted this fight.

Aoki was pissed he had to take this fight in the first place. He thought Hirota wasn’t even in his league… guess he was right.

Hirota should have tapped when he had the chance, once it rolled over it was already to late.

Still very classless, up there with Brock, but I still think Brock’s was worst because his comments on the mic were also disrespectfull.

by RockhardMMA on Dec 31, 2009 12:57 PM EST reply actions

Seriously!

Regardless of what was said backstage (comments on the mic re: a sponsor and talking about going home to his wife), whether Aoki felt this fight was beneath him or not, Brocks actions where nowhere near as bad as this(the ridiculous part is Frank Mir still is running his mouth after two complete beat downs). I realize this is the business, he could have tapped, but he broke his arm, do you really need to carry on with middle fingers and airplane celebrations. That is hands down one of, if not the most disgusting displays of shitty sportsmanship I have ever seen. This is why the sport still lacks respect from the general population.

I really hope Dana ante’s up and sign this guy. I have wanted nothing more then Aoki to loose the hot pants and catch a major beatdown from BJ Penn. Sakurai with his defense exposed him 2 times and I think that is what the wrestlers in the UFC will do. That crab walk won’t work with the size of the cage.

Naw

That’s a waste of B.J.‘s time. I don’t care what record Aoki has, like so many from Japan it protected because he always fights nobodies and guys that have as many L’s as W’s.

Give him to Gray Maynard, Sean Sherk or Frankie Edgar and let him earn his way to BJ. I’ll put a ton of money on whoever fights him because he wouldn’t stand a chance.

by JasonFahQ on Dec 31, 2009 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

I think he looks much better than he actually is since he doesn’t fight UFC level competition. However, I’m sure fans wouldn’t complain if he got an instant UFC title shot just to see BJ smash him

yes, he has faced some good guys

i’m just saying when he has faced talent (not even elite talent), he’s nowhere near as dominant

by wandwagon on Dec 31, 2009 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

he tapped out hansen & alvarez in the 1st round

wen hansen ko’d aoki in the 2nd fight he came in fresh as an alternate in the tourny. aoki just had a 15 minute fight. I really want to see that rematch! He moved up 2 170 lbs, to get KTFO by sakurai

by d*locc on Dec 31, 2009 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

i don't want to see a joachim rematch

b/c i think aoki would probably sub him again lol.

by wandwagon on Dec 31, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Hold up! Dont get it twisted! Aoki is an Elite LW who has beaten some dudes that would eat through the UFC LW division (minus BJ)

You must have not seen how easily he disposed of my man alvarez, who might I add would thrash the entire UFC LW division with the exception of BJ and maybe Diego!

Hellboy would thrash a top LW striker like Florian.

aoki got Ko’-ed by Mach but that is at welterweight where he has no business fighting at, and it came from knees on the ground which arent legal in the USA!

I would bet aoki could twist maynard in a pretzel

by John G. on Dec 31, 2009 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

i watched him put alvarez away with ease

but alvarez is not a top fighter (yet). i think he’s got huge upside and will be great in the future, but he’s a wrestler with boxing skills, which is basically what the entire UFC LW division is made up of. i’m not convinced alvarez would get past everyone except bj and diego.

i think aoki is an A fighter but would be nowhere near as dominant in the US as he is in Japan

by wandwagon on Dec 31, 2009 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

lol differing opinions i guess

to say he would kill melendez is much more of a stretch that what i’m saying. how many high level wrestlers with good sub and takedown defense has aoki beaten?

aoki’s best wins are probably over hansen, alvarez, and GZ. all are very good fighters, but beating those guys doesn’t prove to me he’d tear thru the US. don’t get me wrong i think he’d be successful, but he wouldn’t be a monster.

by wandwagon on Dec 31, 2009 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

aoki and maynard

I have to disagree john,
I don’t think aoki would ever come close to taking the bully down or even bringing the fight to the ground. Maybe a flying move or something but I think gray is much to strong for him. But I do think he can do well in any org

by Phenomenal Angel on Dec 31, 2009 5:03 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

The bully hump is opponents.

Aoki would put on him a rubber guard follow of an gogoplata or an omoplata cruising is way to another finish sub after that. The bully only chance in that fight would be to try to keep it standing and his stand up is as good than Aoki, lol No chance that he win that he win that one.

by Alpha Male. on Jan 1, 2010 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

bj penn is unstopable at 155 but just because they dont have big names doesnt mean crap ufc makes there fighters seem amazing even thought they arent diego they made sound like he was going to smash bj but bj made him look so bad because bj is that much better so its hard to say how good someone is just because they fight pepole you dont know

by elric bro on Jan 1, 2010 3:42 AM EST up reply actions

exactly why I want him to fight BJ!

as rock hard said

Aoki really didnt want this fight he was preparing to face off against the No 1 contender in dream, then with all the dream vs src they changed his opponent with about a weeks notice and they had some verbal back and fourth at the press conference etc etc

Im not 100% in this but i think the middle finger gesture in japan has a totally diff meaning than over here, now i could be wrong, or it could be a completely diff gesture im thinking of, it just seems very outta character for Aoki..

But what a statement to make… imagine if he broke BJ’s arm then flipped him off… man i would laff my ass off

More like

the only gesture to be made after that fight would be BJ licking yet another opponents blood off his gloves.

by haglnuts on Dec 31, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Aoki would die!

Aoki vs Penn wouldn’t even be competitive imo. Aoki’s strength is his ground, which also actually happens to be BJ’s strength, some times it’s overlooked because BJ’s standup is so vicious and technical! Contrast that with Aoki’s poor standup.

BJ Penn would destroy Aoki and i would actually enjoy seeing that.

Aoki gets no love anywere or anytime

so i have no problem with his actions after the fight. Guy should’ve tapped, most of you defend guys smashing unconcious downed opponents so I have a hard time listening to most of you saying he has no respect. Most of you praised Hendo for almost killing Bisping, most of you praised Yvel for almost killing Rizzo, so I think all the comments about Aoki not having respect is more or less people hating him because he is one of the best in the world. Did Mir stop when he broke Sylvia’s arm? Nope the ref stopped it!!! I will chaulk up most of these comments as just a bunch of haters hating!!!!!! let the flaming begin!!!!!!!!!!!

The ref, who knows, could have been hard to tell the angle was bad…..and my Judo coaches always told me some of those Japanese guys are totally willing to let it snap rather than tap first. the fingers are my main issue tho’. it would be interesting to see him with elbows, in a cage, and the 5 min rounds against a tough top position player…….and that’s a good point about Mach and Hansen…he’s 1-1, and 0-1 against them. his losses were striaght Lights Out variety as well.

Don’t respond to children.

Frank Mir packed 30+ pounds of solid muscle onto his body in five months. Why hasn't anyone called him out for steroid use? Is it because he never wrestled for Vince McMahon? I give Mir credit for his taste in strippers/wives, not his fighting skills or his personality.

They are both very dumb!

The ADCC stand for (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) and Aoki is an ADCC Asian champ. He didn’t go far in the absolute division in 2005 and that was against all the weight classes. He lost to Roger Gracie who’s the best Heavy Weight submission artist on the planet and he fond a way to bring him down on the mat in no time w/o his pants too.
