Gilbert Yvel: Junior dos Santos is not in my league

Gilbert-yvel-ko_medium

Props: MMAWeekly

Quoteworthy:

"This is like the highest point you can reach. It’s still a little bit difficult to believe, but I am in the UFC. What better way to prove myself than to knock out Dos Santos ... If I play my game and I be relaxed, and listen (to my corner) through the whole thing, I won’t, I hope there won’t be no problems because he is a good fighter, but his stand-up game is not in my league. For sure I’m going to knock him out. I do MMA to knock somebody out, because then you know you won. He’s on the ground. He’s sleeping, you’re standing, and it’s better than after two rounds the judge says to tell you who is better. If I knock him out then I did my job and nobody can say anything."

Gilbert Yvel anticipates a highlight reel debut when he takes on the fast-rising heavyweight prospect Junior dos Santos at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" on Jan. 2 in Las Vegas. "The Hurricane" was last seen stomping a mudhole in Pedro Rizzo at "Ultimate Chaos" in Biloxi, Miss., back in June and was scooped up by the UFC after Affliction imploded in late July. Will his Octagon debut be a memorable one? Or will "Cigano" continue to plow his way through the ranks of heavyweight?

it will be good while it lasts....

but even though we hvnt seen it i expect dos santos to have an awesome ground game and he will take yvel down and sub him.

Do u think so

If you remember Scott Dos Santos didn’t take Cro Cop to the ground who at one point in time was the deadliest striker in all mma. Tbh I don’t think we are going to see his ground game until he need to take it there and I don’t think Yvel is that much of a threat to Dos Santos. I mean the guy had a record of 17 and 0 in boxing.

one point in time..

theres ur answer right there!yvel is a totally different kettle of fish,he might catch him in an exchange and ko him.but working with the nogeiras and day in and day out and watching the barnett fight kes gonna know if the water gets a little choppy just to take him down for an easy sub or mount and gnp.

Maybe

But if you watch Dana blog were he was in the gym were yvel trains I must say he didn’t look all that impressive he looked gassed his training partners didn’t look to fresh either. All in all I was not impressed with his foot and head movement.

by Jamie The Peach Hunter on Dec 29, 2009 12:13 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

JDS will be too quick and athletic for Yvel, Gilbert is a beast but this is a bad fight for him. Junior is a killer and is a lot younger and fresher, plus he comes from a far superior camp. He could easily submit Yvel if he takes him down but I think that he won’t need to and his handspeed will be too much for Gilbert to deal with. Whoever wins it’ll be by an early KO.

He has not misbehaved in a long time

It has been a long time since he has gotten into trouble, I really don’t think that will be a problem. For sure Dana & the Fertitas have made it clear to him that he is on a fairly short leash given his history, so I don’t anticipate any dirty play from him.
The guy is viscous, as are all Dutch Muy Thai fighters. He won’t hesitate to throw with anyone, and is a good addition to a UFC HW division that lacks a lot of premier strikers. I don’t really even care who wins this fight, just will enjoy it. For me, this is the fight I am looking forward to the most

Gilbert for the upset

I’m not impressed with JDS striking and his last fight did not change my mind. He leaves his face pretty open when he throws a punch especially the uppercut. I think Gilbert would’ve knocked Crocop and JDs out in that fight. Gilbert has the killer instict and once he thinks he’s hurt JDS he will go balls out and finish.

I could see this fight look like Yvel vs Barnett if JDS does’t feel as good on the feet. But lets not over look JDS boxing and the fact that Gilbert is wreckless.

We could/maybe see what happend to Werdum who has never been shut down like that before.

Yvel is the foking man!

He will ko Dos if Dos chose to stand with him…no doubt about it, but I believe that Santos gonna take him down as soon that he will feel how hard that Gilbert hits. Huge difference between Yvel killer instinct power and the power of a mentally fragile Cro Cop!

that highlight consists of a bunch of B level fighters (if that highlight was made from his MMA bouts). Yvel is great for sure, but he hasn’t faced someone of Dos Santos’s caliber yet (with the exception of roided Barnett, but we know how that went).

It's the potential that he has to fuck someone up at any time.....

Is that makes him a force imo. No matter who your opponent is, A, B or even C level fighters, you can’t just put all those highlights down to bad opponents, you put it down to his skill and ability to KO someone in many different ways, either hand, knee or leg, seriously impressive by anyones standards imo.

what I like to look for on any upcoming fights is the level of competition these guys were beating prior to facing each other because it will have a big impact on how the fight will play out. Sure, a fight is a fight and can end at any time with a puncher’s chance. Dos Santos is coming off two stoppages against top talent in Werdum and Cro Cop, while Yvel is coming off with wins against B level fighters in the past few years. I agree that Yvel has great striking, but let’s not forget that his previous opponents are nowhere near the caliber of a Dos Santos. I summed all of their opponents records that they have beat since 2007 (Yvel has fought a lot and I didn’t want to spend too much time on this so I only counted those beginning in 07). Yvel’s opponents that he has beaten have a total record of 49-38-5 while Dos Santos has a record of 90-33-3. Dos Santos is beating much better competition and on the feet. Anyone with great striking can look good against lower competition, the question is what can they do against top competition? I don’t think he’ll be able to do whatever he wants to Dos Santos on the feet. Of Saints by KO!

Dude don't you know by now that MMA math doesn't work?

Dos Santos last two opponents was never a threat to his crappy kickboxing. I thought that Cro Cop would have been but he wasn’t there in that fight. I you analyse Dos past kickboxing fight you’ll see that he got nothing to offer to Gilbert!

by Alpha Male. on Dec 29, 2009 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

ugh… this isn’t MMA math… MMA math is fighter A beat fighter B who beat fighter C, therefore fighter A should beat fighter C, which is false of course. this is looking at their fighter history and seeing someone who has been fighting better competition and doing quite good at it.

I thought that Cro Cop would have been but he wasn’t there in that fight

there is nothing like someone knocking a fighter for what he couldn’t do and not give any props to the other fighter for nullifying the game for the fighter you were cheering for. I see this a lot around these blogs. If a fighter did not fight as expected, it’s not that he didn’t “bring it” it’s just that he was outclassed by a better fighter.

I you analyze Dos past kickboxing fight you’ll see that he got nothing to offer to Gilbert!

this is not a kickboxing fight, it’s an MMA fight. different sports, and will play out differently too. I’ve seen grapplers that won in BJJ tournaments lose to those they beat in an MMA match. Different sport, potential different outcome.

look Orcus it’s just that a few here got banned from BE for no reasons. Only for having debates and not being belligerent. I said a story here the other day of a good debate that I had over there and the next day I was banned, I guess for saying that you guys don’t know much over there. I’m not saying that was you who rat me out or is behind it, but it really irks me to see a guy that help us with the new format ,a guy that was from BE still coming in here trying to argue when we can’t do it ourselves at BE. So that’s why I said that. If you start to post here more often then I will take a pleasure debating with you, but until then don’t ask too much?

by Alpha Male. on Dec 29, 2009 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Plus it’s not an argument about the American government like the other day that will help your case.

Sorry for the typos and it wasn’t a question at the end…I fucked that up, lol!

by Alpha Male. on Dec 29, 2009 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

I was a part of Mania way before I was a part of BE, but I only came back when Mania updated their format.

BE has a lot of rules, no fighter bashing, don’t offend other members, no debating religion and politics, and believe it or not, no pissing off the moderators. If you break any of these rules you will be banned, did you do anything like that? Probably because you were saying they "didn’t know much over there". No matter where you go, you’ll have people that know a lot on the matter and people that don’t know so much, you can’t generalize a site and its members like that.

I also didn’t know I needed permission to post or reply to comments here on Mania. Like I said, I don’t want to piss people off, but I view it as my right to post here whenever I want to. If my input here is not welcome, I’m pretty sure someone at Mania will ban me and you’ll never have to hear from me again :P But I get where I am not welcome, therefore, if you don’t want to talk to me simply because I am a member of BE (and had nothing to do with them banning you), that’s fine. I won’t reply to you, that‘s all :P

About the American government debate, it was not my intention to start that, I was simply answering a question on the matter. I’ll not start that again here.

lol, well I might have done one thing or 2. I called Anton delusional for putting BJ in front of Wand for MMA accomplishment, but I said it in a friendly manner. Also I might irk them by posting a BJ “cool aid” romo picture, lol, but my posts were there for a whole week and as soon that I said my story here on mania not over there I got banned and the other guy from this site that was in agreement with me had the same result. Kev got banned for saying that a fight was lame, lol, how fucked up is that?

I’m not saying that you’re not welcome and dude of course that you can post or replying to anyone that you like…I was just telling ya what I still got on the heart, lol. My bad if it’s you who paid for it. Just forget what I said and comeback here more often. You’re far from being stupid and you do bring some relevance in some of your posts.

For Yvel/Dos…we were talking about Dos stand up not his MMA, that’s why I was talking about his kickboxing. I know that he seems to be the better MMA fighter right now than Gilbert that’s why I’m betting against Yvel, but I know for a fact that Bert stand up is better than Dos stand up with his looping hooks and uppercuts. Yvel got some of the most devastating knees also and he’s really strong in the clinch too. That’s where I think that he’s got a net advantage over Dos Santos. the rest is pure speculation b/c no one have seen his ground game yet. Try to find that Maiorino or Ferreira (he lost by arm bar, so?) fight for fun. When he fought Werdum the fight was quick and Werdum was dumb enough to think that he was a sudden striker after sparring with Cro Cop, so that doesn’t say much IMO. Cro Cop like I said Cro Cop wasn’t there in that fight so I can take that as a good performance from him, but I’m not jumping to the conclusion too quick that he’s a world beater and that’s why I’m not jumping in his wagon yet.

by Alpha Male. on Dec 29, 2009 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

hey man, all good, I know how things can be and sometimes people just get banned there for pissing off the mods, which is the only rule I don’t agree with over there.

Let’s wait and see how this Dos Santos fight will go, I still think people are underestimating his striking, but this will surely solidify our reasons if he chooses to stand with Yvel for sure.

Cro Cop's done

Anyone with mental issues that severe should be seeking help and not continuing to fight. The fact is that he got outclassed by a younger and quicker fighter, who picked him apart on the feet and forced him to quit. Cro Cop was a killer, ever since the Gabe loss he’s been a broken man and I doubt that he’ll ever be back to his best.

Dos will ko Yvel standing

I can’t wait for dos santos to knock yvel out cold standing. When he does I will be thinking of you Alpha, as you cry and weep for the rest of the night.

there is no way JDS

beats Yvel standing,… that just does not compute…. blue screen of death….

the way its going down is this, they meet in middle feel each other out… Yvel runs hits him with his brutal jumping knee, drops JDS, Yvel jumps on him pounds him out, Mazzagatti tries to body tackle Yvel, Yvel picks up Mazz an power bombs him, then does his back flip celebration….

Every night i would pray to God for a new bike, then i realized God does not work that way, so i stole one and asked him to forgive me

please do...

because the heavyweight picture will be clearer if we have some guys winning staying healthy and keep winning and who knows we may actually see an actual title fight one day?

Alpha

i think u should go with yvel in this one. you are one of thew that know about him. barnett a premiere grappler had a hard time finishing him. even if dos gets it to the ground, i believe yvel can get back to his feet quick. everyone is overly impressed with jds and seem to really underestimate yvel.

this won’t be yvel’s toughest test. it will however be jds’.

I agree and I know I should…I’m just still in disbelieve that Dos shrugged it off Cro Cop punches like it was nothing, that’s my only point why I’m not so sure for that fight! Don’t worry though I’m gonna pull for Bert to KO Dos out, no doubt about that!

by Alpha Male. on Dec 29, 2009 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

shrugged off cro cops pushes..

crocops offence in that fight was horrendous.it was like pushing the school bully away.and i love the old crocop!

I didn't think anyone was going to beat Badr this year

He is getting big? Must be the war of words with Overroids.

Semmy walked through this turny. I can’t believe he was able to pull this off after having that incident when training. My head would have been messed for months.

ivel talks a good talk, but dos santos has some of the best stand-up i’ve seen. no wonder there’s no need to see his ground game. i have dos santos by tko in the first round.
