2020 vision: UFCs Dana White lays out an ambitious 10-year plan ...

Dana-face_medium

... in a recent opinion editorial in the Las Vegas Sun. And he still intends to take over the sports universe:

"UFC will be the biggest sport in the world by 2020. People were saying I was a lunatic 10 years ago when we first got this going, but the stuff we’re working on right now on so many levels is mind-boggling.... The sport was just sanctioned in Massachusetts and Vancouver. We’re going to get it done in Ontario and New York in 2010. And we’re already working on taking the UFC global. We’ve already done Germany, England and Ireland, and we just sold 22,000 seats for an event in Australia in 15 minutes.... Right now we are on some form of television in over 175 countries. We’re all human beings and we all 'get' fighting.... Me and Lorenzo Fertitta will sit down and figure out a game plan for the next 10 years, and we’ll execute it. So, is 10 years enough time to make this the biggest sport in the world? Hell, yeah."

Does White have the right product and diabolical ability to to make this happen or is he completely off his rocker?

expect some sub standard cards

danas vision is to put a weekly show on soon.thats gonna cause 2 problems
(a) even if he merges with the wec hes not gonna have enough top fighters on the roster and we r gonna start getting sub standard cards/main events regularly.
(b) weve got to look at the monetary side of things,ok he can throw a few free cards out here and there, but some people arnet gonna be able to afford all the ppvs.one way round this would be to have a ufc dedicated channel with a yearly/monthly subscription.it could show repeats, ufc unleashed, old tufs hell even get the pride library on there.just a thought.

Couldn't ever happen.

1st off, the UFC is not a sport MMA is.
2nd, they’re already showing signs of slowing down,
3rd, the sport won’t ever be accepted by the mainstream media to the point where it takes over.
4th, it’s impossible for it to be the biggest sport, human nature is to play football (soccer) and other normal sports where you don’t get hurt.
5th, there will never be enough money in it or the possibility to put on as many shows as they would need, it’s just to violent.

Main reason why it won’t become the biggest sport is simply because it’s not good or exciting enough, I still love other real sports way more. There’s too much of an entertainment factor in MMA that plays in like ppl outside of the fighters who gets to decide the outcome.

MMA is already on a downward slide

I’d say that it peaked at UFC 100 (given the two big showdowns) and it is on a decline since then….even the Fedor thing is nothing to me as he continues to fight has-beens. I can’t see how the UFC will grow as they continue to bring back people who have retired already or those that should retire. Sure they have brought in some new exciting fighters (Jon Jones – the future of 205) but other MMA shows are more exciting to watch lately these days. Not knocking UFC, just Dana the dreamer. If it weren’t for the success from TUF 1, the UFC would be a mere shadow of itself.

lolz

The UFC has like what 1 or maybe 2 events in a month if you’re lucky, granted there are other organizations but not of the same standard. Start watching sports again and not so much late night entertainment companies trying to make money on exhibitioning MMA with big names.

cant it happen

i dont c it happening because, all the fighters aren’t under 1 roof and they it would b hard to have as many fights to actually c who is the best. their has to b a federation like boxing rather than just 1 company with only 1 or 2 ppvs a month and even then who has the money to pay for more ppvs.

Why stop watching sports?

I try to watch everything, sure MMA is my favourite sport to watch now but I’d rather see my football or rugby league team play than watch a substandard MMA card. There’s no need to stop watching something because you prefer something else, there are far more sports as well as TV programmes and films to watch than just MMA.

My man, what the f*ck ru spouting off about?… MMA not exciting?….. I’m sorry there is no more real sport than MMA…. it’s not to violent… it’s just to new for mainstream to get it, but they will ….the demographics prove it. Those watching the sport now, will just add to a new generation of kids that will grow up watching it along with all the other sports. MMA will become mainstream.

by THORAZINE on Dec 28, 2009 3:56 AM EST up reply actions

I have to agree...

MMA is one of the more exciting sports out now. I know the US is not the world, but here there are tons of kids in bjj and mma classes. My sons BJJ school has quadrupled in attendance in the last 2 years. The Florida grappling tournaments are huge now. I talk to friends and business contacts in other states and they are all experiencing similar growth in their areas. In 1993 the sport was unheard of but excited the crap out of me. 10 Years ago it was just begin to show some signs of some mainstream approval. Now everywhere you go people are having “Water Cooler” talk about the UFC. The NFL is slowly less and less spoken about. I know it is still number 1 in the states and Football (soccer) is still #1 in the world, but the growth of this sport in 20 years has been extrodinary. What will 10 more years bring? We will be the ones in control, the tax payers, the voters, the generation in command. A generation(s) much more accepting of this sport. So it can only keep growing.

Human nature is to play sports that you don’t get hurt? As a boy I did everything possible to test that theory. Human nature-The MALE species natural instinct is to fight and to be Alpha Male. Every guy in the world has or desires to be the king of his castle, keeper of his domain! I am not talking about ogre style violence, but deep inside every guy would love to find and test their own limitations physically. That is why men start wars, men play football, rugby, hockey, boxing, martial arts, and are acountable for almost all forms of violence-Legally and illegaly! So human nature to be safe, umm not sure about that. That is just what society has expected, but deep inside most guys I think would rather push the limit.

Sure people like to see violence but there are many that don't

Everyone can watch or play football, even those that hate the sport will watch their country play in a major tournament as it’s a lot less violent and is an easier sport to understand. The fact is there are many people that will never watch or compete in combat sports as they don’t like the idea of people getting hurt, that simple fact will prevent MMA from ever becoming the top sport in the world. The best that it can hope for is to be considered the top combat sport in the world and get the same coverage and casual audience as boxing. Until MMAsts become mainstream celebrities like the top athletes in other sports e.g. David Beckham, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, then this “biggest sport in the world” argument shouldn’t even be considered, especially at a time when the UFC PPVs are struggling.

"Anderson Silva is the best fighter on the planet...any Anderson Silva fight that is on, people should be buying that PPV, not because he’s my fighter but you know what, he to me is like the Muhammad Ali of MMA...the UFC has been around since 1993, nobody (else) has 10 consecutive wins in the UFC. Ultimate Fighting is the sport in the UK

Even non-UFC shows like Cage Rage have been promoted as “Ultimate Fighting”. It’s a worrying sign that to many the UFC is the sport and not just the top promotion.

I don't set it happening

I see the UFC becoming bigger than boxing but that is about it. Team sports offer so much more imo for the masses to get excited about. You have the locality aspect of my city/country vs yours. Tribalism is a huge seller, look how they are whoring out ‘Racist Pride" to all the hispanics! Also having seasons in things like Soccer or Football where there is such a build up to the next season and the idea that “this might be our season.” Just some of my thoughts, I do not think MMA is going anywhere but up, but I don’t think it surpasses things so ingrained in areas like Soccer.

maybe

It will certainly grow. It is huge in Canada, Australia, Brazil and the US. It is fairly big in England and Ireland. My next target after and event in Mass and Vancuv would be to target Mexico. Put Cain on the card and your gold. If not Mexico then San Diego or some border town to bring in Mexican fans. Plus that takes from boxing. If the UFC does not return to Brazil you will see a rival company start up in that country mark my words. Too much talent down there and if they had a good place to fight in Brazil most would ,rather than come to the US. Brazil is the 4th most populated country in the world. Make it happen Brazil and Mexico. Also I predict the fight night in Virginia will have an awesome crowd…redskin fans need something to cheer for.

MMA is far from "huge" in Brazil

I’m brazilian and just get into MMA six months ago. Now I’m addicted to it, and have watched countless hours of fight footage. But before it, I didn’t know anything about MMA.. There’s no mass midia coverage about MMA, the fights only are brodcasted by cabel TV. It may surprise you guys, but nobody knows who Minotauro, or Wanderlei are. Here most people still have the “vale tudo” image about the sport. There is a lot of fans of MMA amongst people that practice jiu jitsu or other martial arts, but it’s a niche sport just like in the U.S.

MMA is never going to be bigger than soccer. It’s ridiculous to say so. You guys don’t get how soccer works. In 90% of the matches, it’s not fun. It’s a boring sport that we are hooked by our fathers since childhood and we just can get out of it. It’s like a tradition. If you guys want to understand how important soccer is, read the awsome Nick Hornby’s book “Fever Pitch”.

Agreed

David Haye just made himself a big name by beating Valuev and has been on all sorts of radio and TV shows over here, even my mum knows about David Haye from watching his interview on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. He was voted into the top 10 British sportsmen of 2009 for the sports awards ceremony on the BBC and all of this just from one victory over a shit fighter rather than one of the Klitschko Bros for one of the 4 world titles. If Dan Hardy pulls off a miracle and beats a p4p great in GSP for the UFC WW title, making him the #1 WW in the world, he will barely get a mention from the media and I guarantee that he won’t be having any prime time interviews on the BBC. That is the difference in coverage between boxing and MMA in the UK, nevermind the coverage for football, rugby union, cricket, F1 and tennis. MMA has a long way to go before being anywhere near as big as these sports in the UK, nevermind places where the UFC have never even put on a show.

I've been unimpressed to say the least with the BS negotiations between Haye and the Klitschkos

He won’t beat Vitali unless he’s way past his prime and will struggle to beat Wlad but they’ve been as bad as him in negotiations. All parties have to sort this mess out for the sake of the sport and the divsion, as right now the Klitschkos aren’t draws, mainly due to them having no real opposition, and the only way to cement their legacies and make some real money is to face Haye. Once he gets past Ruiz and if he avoids Don King like the plague then we can see some real fights at HW. If Haye fights smart like he did against Valuev (before breaking his hand) then he could KO Wlad and even Vitali, it all depends on how motivated he is and how good his strategy is.

The UFC needs a network television and premium cable deal

The UFC needs to get on network and cable TV as Strikeforce is doing. Dana has wanted to land these venues, but has been holding out for the best deal. Strikeforce’s growing success is probably undercutting his negotiating leverage a bit and may force him to take a less attractive deal. He has hinted in the past that he is close to an agreement and I would not be surprised to see an anouncement soon.

by DrPepper on Dec 27, 2009 10:31 AM EST reply actions

The UFC has a great chance of becoming HUGE globally! I don’t believe it will ever take over Soccer but everyone likes to watch a fight and boxing is DEAD! This is the next logical step in the progression of the fight game, the ultimate proving ground.
In America it will be number two behind the NFL in a few years and that is huge!
Dana and the Fertitta’s have the brains, capital, vision, and most importantly the drive to reach their goal. I hope they do it!

by Sofa-King-Toasty on Dec 27, 2009 10:40 AM EST via mobile reply actions

I thought the sport was called MMA

I have never been a fan of Dana White as far as I am concerned he was in the right place at the right time, and Big John could have been given his role back then and I couldn’t see the outcome of the growth of the UFC being any different then it is today. The gladitorial nature of the sport, The Fertitta brothers contacts, money and the amazing fighters that the UFC has, and has had were all major factors in the growth. Many may truly believe that Danas eloquence and negotiating tactics are behind the growth, but I just see him as the delivery boy for the Fertitta brothers cheques. He believes he is more important than what he actually was in the growth of the organaization. The sport is MMA, but before I knew that, my mates and I were calling the sport itself UFC because of those early videoe releases. The brand name UFC was used to describe MMA like Hoover is used to describe a vacum cleaner by a lot of people, that is the power and influence it had, all that was not down to Dana. If people want to respect him and give him credit for the effort he has put in, that is fine, but it annoys me that he makes out more or less that nearly all of the UFCs success is down to him, which I do not believe for a second. What I do believe is that if we did not have such an arrogant dictator in charge, you would see a lot more content fighters, and we wouldn’t be talking about the greatest fights that never were, we would actually have been able to witness them. I love the sport of MMA and also the UFC and how it has made the sport grow and gain respect in the sports world, but Dana is an arrogant prick, and he always will be.

Can't top soccer worldwide or NFL in the States

To think that a fighting sport would ever rival soccer worldwide (or the NFL in the States) seems pretty far-fetched. It’s just a fact that a lot of people don’t get off on watching someone get their face bashed in. I know … the very idea seems nuts to me too, but it’s true. There are a lot of folks who prefer competition without the blood that comes with MMA.

Secondly, i know the UFC was hit with the injury bug in 2009, but did you know there were 7 title fights in 2009? FUCKING SEVEN. that’s it. there were something like 20 UFC events in 2009 (UFC events, several Fight Nights and 2 TUF Finales). As the UFC continues to grow this number each year, they will eventually get to a point where they will need to introduce another weight class into the mix. otherwise, we will continue to see “Main Events” like Rashad vs. T.Silva (no offense to them, but a Main Event should either be a title fight or a #1 contender qualifier match, and Rashad vs. T.Silva is neither … nor is Couture vs. Vera or Griffin vs. Ortiz 2.

How long do we have to be subjected to crap Main Events on PPV cards?

no it's not enough

point is they just fill the cards with “names” for it to sell, you can’t do it like that and at the same time call it a real sport, there needs to be a system where the top ranked guys fight regardless of name value, but see it will never happen like that because if it did less people would watch.

Like I said I might have misunderstood that part of his post b/c at the first glance I thought that he was saying that was enough. I skipped the “That’s it”. What I think it’s that you can’t have title fights for fight night or TUF finale. Overseas…maybe, but other than that, that would be stupid to do. We had 15 UFC’s in the year with 4 of them Overseas and we had 7 title defences. It’s like 1 every 2 months if you count the European shows also…I can live with that as long as, like Adam said ….an main event should either be a title fight or a #1 contender qualifier match. Basically that’s what they are already doing right now, but with all the injured we are stuck with miserable main events like 108 and 109 or like 105 and 106… all main events in the LHW division, but these fights (were or are) in no way for determining who will be the next # 1 contender and they (had or have) nothing to do with an #1 contender qualifier match.
I know that the # 1 contender is already set to fight Lyoto and I know that Rashad was the former champ at his last fight ,but Rashad is an hyped up TUF or LHW champ for no reasons, IMO. I don’t find him,Thiago, Randy, Coleman,Vera, Ortiz or Griffin as an # 2 or 3 contenders in the division anyway and I feel the same way that he is on that.

I’d say it has a few more years where it’s at, but 10 years from now I doubt it will have the popularity it currently enjoys. As the money gets bigger, I think we’ll see more sissy boys like Mayweather, who won’t take fights unless there’s a cool mill in it for them. Once that happens and fights start getting fixed, and it becomes more about the profits than it is about the fights and the fighters, people just won’t care as much.

I was talking about mma being big in the US and Canada and how it could be bigger in Mexico and Brazil. I NEVER mentioned the word soccer. Learn how to read a comment. Soccer is a huge sport but more people in the US watch mma than soccer and if it (mma) ever had ppv like events on regular TV it would be bigger than soccer everywhere. People like soccer the best most places because there isn’t a major football or mma league in that country with network deals, exactly the same reason soccer isn’t big in the US. If marketed equally mma world wide could be a top 4 watched sport if not the top. People still don’t know about it but everyone gets fighting and wants to see it by everyone I mean tons of people from all locations.

i've lived in many countries....

and i can tell you that UFC wont go that global. The rest of the world knows what Baseball and American footbal is; but they just don’t like it. MMA doesn’t attract all ranges, men, women, old timers; it just doesn’t. plus what makes other sports like soccer fun, is the competition one country has with another. for example, American football would be more fun if the U.S. team went against England, etc.

offcourse MMA could pass boxing, but it will only stay as far as boxing has stayed… that same level.

i like how Dana says UFC instead of MMA, bites more than he can chew

WTF

What are you talking about? “if it (mma) ever had ppv like events on regular TV it would be bigger than soccer everywhere.” HAHHAHAHAHA, or not… btw, they do have it on regular TV, it’s in the middle of the night in Europe, and no it wouldn’t stand a chance if it was on prime time or whatever, but that would never happen since the “entertainment” is too violent.

“People like soccer the best most places because there isn’t a major football or mma league in that country with network deals”
Couldn’t be farther from the truth, people outside of the States don’t give a damn about what football is or having a major MMA league which btw would be impossible cause it wouldn’t generate any money at all. 1 big soccer game gets one billion viewers, focking 1 game, that’s insane, and they play matches all over the world in every countries national league every week/every day, and to top it all of a tournament like the Champions League every year with the best teams from all leagues around Europe playing eachother.

I also seriously doubt more ppl watch MMA than Soccer in the U.S, sounds far from true to me.

thats my favorite part…
wouldn’t it be great if each nation, Brazil, England, U.S, Russia, all had their own MMA team. they then put their fighters against fighters from other countries.

undisputed 2009 to 2010

i hope that there are a variety of changes to the video game, like being able to hold back on the joystick, that is the most stupid thing about the game, because you can time things correctly and just because there holding back nothing happens its freakin retarted.

soccer vs mma in the states?

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think ppv
soccer would get much attention here. I definitely believe more people care about the world of pro fighting more than they care about pro soccer. I’ve never been invited to “soccer night” at any of my work buddy’s houses, and I don’t know many people who would be willing to pay a cover at the bar because the soccer game was on.

by cosa7189 on Dec 27, 2009 5:59 PM EST via mobile reply actions

oh of course.

Soccer is not a ppv sport anywhere in the world, simply because they don’t need it to be, it’s too big and generates so much money, the tv deals they get are worth a TON of money. I can guarantee you right now that there are more practicioners and so on in the sport of soccer than in MMA. it also gets more mainstream media coverage and now that the U:S national team has made it to South Africa it’s gonna be even more soccer.
Finally, why you haven’t been invited to soccer night at a buddy’s house is because the best soccer is played in Europe at early morning or middle of the day in U.S time.

I think it's important to point out that soccer is still a growing sport in America.

especially now that they’re having more success with the national team.

That reminds me, England to win the World Cup in 2010

We’re going to walk this group, the Americans don’t have a chance against us and neither do Algeria or Slovenia (I had to look them up, shows how seriously I’m taking them). We’ve had to beat better teams (Croatia and Russia) to qualify, so this group should be an easy 3 wins. With Capello in charge and our top players fit and acclimatised, this has the potential to be our year. Argentina, France and Portugal have all been appalling in qualifying while Italy and Brazil aren’t the dominant teams that they once were. This is the first time that I’ve been confident about our chances in a World Cup as we have the quality coaching to match the players and are coming into the competition in top form. 2010 will be our year.

Anderson has had 10 fights in the UFC, only 1 has ever gone to a decision."

I can understand your optimism, but brazil and spain are still the clear favorites to win.
hopefully England gets to play Portugal and that will be the end for them ;D haha.

Portugal have a tough group and may not even make the KO stages

Brazil and Spain are the 2 favourites but both can be beaten, some of their top players have struggled for form this year and if we can get our best players fit and in form in South Africa then we have as good a chance as anyone to win it.

Dana's same old rederick

Bigger than soccer or NFL come on the man is insane, for one thing MMA is a small demographic, old people and women will never follow MMA, but they will watch soccer and most other sports. MMA has a small audience and will never get ant bigger that is in any country at any given time.

Dana couldn’t even get Fedor.. let alone take UFC to the top of the mountain… IF Dana can’t come to a deal with Fedor’s camp (SOMEONE we all wanted to see in the UFC).. then I doubt he can make deals with the big boy t.v networks to assure them huge success.

Dana'a ego will be his downfall...

…I remember an interview not long ago where he was being asked what he thought of another promotion(probably strikeforce) and he said something smart ass like" those guys arent even the UFC’s competition" BS they arent…He seriously needs to take a few tips from the fighters he employs… the most important being ; never underestimate your opponent.

why soccer is popular

The reason Europe is not into football and likes soccer instead is because they have soccer in every high school and football in none. Football is a hard game to understand if you have never played it or even seen it. They don’t have football in the schools because it is very expensive. In the US almost every high school has football and soccer and footbal DOMINATES soccer in America where the playing field is level and kids are exposed to both equally. Why is rugby not popular in America? Because it is not in the schools. If 99% of high schools had a rugby team you would see that sport sky rocket in America. It is hard to have English football players if you don’t have football in English schools and it is impossible to have English fans with no English players.

This kind of critical thinking is probably above most of you on here so read it twice. In ten years if the UFC continues to grow it will get a network deal and be a top 4 sport. Yes pussies outnumber real men in the world so soccer will remain king because even a peasent country can get soccer in the schools thus soccer players and teams from that country thus fans from that country.

by hatteras on Dec 27, 2009 10:17 PM EST reply actions

still wrong.

they would have football in every high school if the sport even existed outside of america. nobody likes the sport, it’s just not a macho thing, and most ppl aren’t big enough to play the sport.
So if they did have the sport in high schools they would only lose money on having it cause ppl would still chose soccer 7 days a week.

my god , where is everyones optimizm , i belive it can be and will be,. I thought everyone on these sites were hardcore mma fans , all i hear is dana this and dana that. If it werent for Dana White the sport would never be where it is today. I bet 5 years ago, all of u naysayers thought it wasnt going to be this big, If u dont think it will become the biggest sport in five years then dont even watch it anymore cuz u r not die hard mma fans , leave the comments for people who want to watch it grow and suceed, and quit putting down the sport

MMA is still growing, will it be as big as soccer......?

Football in america is only watched by americans canadians oitside north america football is not watched by many peaple and mma is growing in most countries so getting bigger than football yeah it’s a possibility. for the other football better known as soccer the biggest sport in the world I can not see MMA or any other sport for that matter touching it. I love Dana’s dreams and hope the sport becomes a mainstream sport across the globe and I believe it will. As a MMA fan you must respect his goals and dreams, for all his haters ….well anyone on here helps pay his his wage LOL.

This post is for Roberto!!!

Why are you even on this site, it seems as though all you have to say is negative things about the sport!!! All you do is compare it to soccer!!!!!!!!! “SOCCER IS FOR FAGS”, Listening to you compare MMA to Soccer makes me want to throwup on you man!!!!! Maybe you should go join a soccer forum.. Just a thought, this is an MMA forum. The simple fact that you would pick Soccer 7 days a week over MMA says it all dude, why dont you just leave here and go play soccer with your kids or someting usefull with your time.

by HEELHOOK on Dec 28, 2009 10:52 AM EST reply actions

"Soccer is for fags"

So the majority of the people in the world are “fags” for playing football then? Come on man, that’s a terrible argument. All of this “we’re better fans than you because we don’t like any other sport” arguments just make you look like bitter arseholes. Sure this is an MMA blog but it’s not just for people who only like MMA, there are a lot of sports out there and to suggest that people who enjoy watching or competing in something else are lesser fans than you is arrogant and ridiculous.

Your right man

I am arrogent and ridiculous just like the rest of the people on this forum. Posting your opinion is one thing but trashing MMA and constantly comparing it to soccer is just as arrogent and ridiculous. Of course your going to start pissing people off this is an MMA site and if all you do is dis MMA you are going to get flamed.

PS: its soccer man, not football lol!!!!!
