Alistair Overdraft: Lord Overeem pocketing Euros before 2010 return to Strikeforce

Quoteworthy:

"I never said he wasn’t fighting in April. What I said was there will be a fight by the end of March or April in K-1, and actually, he did very well in K-1 and he’s got an extremely good contract. Commercial-wise, it’s better for him, and we agreed to this already on K-1, that we will do that fight. After that fight, he will fight in Strikeforce. Two, three times, whatever is available in May, June, July, we don’t care. Think about it, man, he’s broadcast in 150 countries (on K-1). Right now, he’s got more sponsors than he ever had before. In his own country, he had a crazy rating during the Grand Prix, but also on EuroSport and also in Thailand. And this is where the UFC isn’t even broadcast. UFC is not even broadcast in Europe. Nobody knows about the UFC. Semmy Schilt and Alistair Overeem are gods there. You’re talking about a continent with 280 million people. I understand Americans look at America as the number one country in the world, but we also have stadiums with 20,000 people and broadcast live on TV all over Europe and in a lot of different countries. Worldwide, (Alistair) gained a lot more popularity, financially he got a lot better off, and that doesn’t mean we’re not going to be obliged to our contract with Strikeforce. Yes, he’s going to fight in 2010, and it will not be mid, but it will be earlier in the year. In May, for sure, he will fight in America. It just depends on the date."

Bas Boon, manager for Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem, touts the international appeal of his top fighter despite a recent defeat at the hands of Badr Hari in the K-1 WORLD GP 2009 FINAL back on Dec. 5. Still, "Demolition Man" hasn't lost an MMA match in nearly two years -- a win streak that actually began when he submitted Paul Buentello to capture the title back in 2007. The only problem is he hasn't even attempted to defend his title once since that time. Will he ever? And at what point does the new-look Strikeforce strip him of the title?

Was going to say the same thing

Strip the belt from him, let 2 other SF guys fight for it. There is no loss here if Roids doesn’t fight in SF anymore.

I don't like Overeem

But won’t blame anyone for making money. I didn’t think he would be better off fighting overseas, but if he is good for him. We can still watch it anyway. As long as he’s fighting we should all be happy.

Frank Mir packed 30+ pounds of solid muscle onto his body in five months. Why hasn't anyone called him out for steroid use? Is it because he never wrestled for Vince McMahon? I give Mir credit for his taste in strippers/wives, not his fighting skills or his personality.

Anyone who thinks Brock should be stripped of his title should be screaming for Overeem to give the belt back to SF.

Brock currently is the best. I will not deny that. -- Daniel Worby

Agree

Brock hasn’t fought for 6 months and people are calling for his head. He’s been out as long as GSP, nobody wants GSP’s belt back.

Ok

I live in a European country and the UFC has been shown live on free tv for almost 2 yrs now or something. Dude must be smoking a little too much in Holland, what he’s saying is not correct except for the part about the money and sponsors ofc. Anyways i love K-1 and Badr Hari is a god, Sem Schilt on the other hand has almost gotten to the point where he’s bad for the sport.

May/June is early in the year? Sounds like a bunch of piss-test ducking. I don’t understand why Overrated hasn’t been stripped yet.

by Merlin9 on Dec 24, 2009 7:01 PM EST reply actions

He is making money and marketing himself rounding up more fans/haters

He is going around letting people in other countries know who he is while us americans hear about it more and more. Its pissing more of us off which is good because it seems like the more people that hate on a fighter the more he is watched. I think its kind of cool he is traveling the world fighting in different organizations. He is marketing himself and strikeforce while doing it because I’m sure they make it known he’s the strikeforce champ. I do hope he fights in early 2010. Don’t know about the roids thing I mean he’s 6 ft 5 or 6 and was fighting at 205 and was pretty ripped back then while he was cutting weight. With proper training and dieting its pretty easy to pack on good weight. I’m also half samoan and its real easy for me to put on muscle thanks to my good genetics haha so that’s why its easy and maybe overeem is the same way

Damn right he does.

I wasn’t sure what he meant, but that is how I took it. Since there is 280 million here. Numbers don’t tell a story though, our 280 million spend more money on MMA than anyone else. We are the suckers buying all the PPV’s and memorabilia etc. etc.

There aren't 700 million people living in Russia

Its closer to 140 million people.. Even if you combined the populations of all Slavic speaking countries in Europe it would still only be about 300 million people, roughly the same size as the American population. That being said, I’ve studied in Western Europe, and I don’t recall seeing a single bar advertising upcoming Strikefore or K1 events.. The UFC may not be as big in Europe as it is in the United States, but it is definitely growing in popularity, and it is the reason why MMA is starting to enter sports culture in Ireland, England, and the rest of Europe.

K1

I understand what you are saying, but K1 is hardly a growing sport now. I would venture to say it has plateaued or is on a decline, thanks to MMA. MMA is the number one growing sport in the world. K1 as an organization started the same year the states got to watch Royce Gracie amazed us with UFC 1, 1993. Maybe K1 exploded faster, but how much longer do you think it keeps bigger fan base then mma? Also, I would bet that more money is made and spent here in the US on mma then all the K1 countries.

by Da Monkey on Dec 25, 2009 8:57 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe overdid it with Brazil

But yeah you get the point 1 country almost has the entire pop fools sound like they are just making excuses so he wont fight in the U.S.

This is why Strikeforce cant be taken serious in talks alongside the UFC. When your champions dont defend because there out doing other things MMA related its sort of embarrassing. This is why the UFC contracts forbid fighters from competing else where

by AintNoSunshine on Dec 24, 2009 7:51 PM EST reply actions

SF is better off without Overeem

SF should be careful about allowing roid users to fight in their organization. Not saying it doesn’t happen in the UFC, but they signed Lashley without much fuss and it seems that they’re a bit more willing to be the type of org. that doesn’t ask too many questions as long as the talent’s bustin heads. I’d really hate to see such a promising UFC competitor become a cartoon freakshow and fall flat…or worse yet, succeed and hurt the sport.

by cosa7189 on Dec 24, 2009 9:35 PM EST via mobile reply actions

also...

I agree that SF should start seeking exclusive contracts….this really drives the point home for my as to why the UFC has been so hardassed on the issue.

UFC on TV in Europe

Actually you can watch UFC in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Portugal, Croatia, England, Scotland, Ireland and I’ve probably forgotten about some countries too. So Bas hasn’t got his facts straight!

by Larsenator on Dec 25, 2009 6:52 AM EST reply actions

I might add.....

….. that the UFC is HUGE over here – particularly in the UK but also in Scandinavia. It is only a matter of time before the Dutch will realize the beauty of American world class caged MMA and the entire scene in Holland will change!

by Larsenator on Dec 25, 2009 6:53 AM EST reply actions

Strip him

why a debate? Coker quit taking it in the rear and grow some balls. The only other excuse is that he is riding out a roid test.

by ElStIkO on Dec 25, 2009 8:54 AM EST reply actions

Or that he is making more money in K1 and knocked out one of their former champions and is one of the top contenders in kickboxing at the moment.

The only other excuse for your stupid post is that you are jealous of Overeem’s pectoral muscles, see I can make stupid claims too.

by DirtyML on Dec 25, 2009 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

ill stick to what i said

nothing you said presents an argument as to why he should keep his belt. My god you are a retard. wake up a lttle before you respond to my post. idiota

by ElStIkO on Dec 25, 2009 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

I did respond to your post, you said the only other excuse is that he is riding out a roid test, I proved that is not true.

I don’t care about the strikeforce belt they have less than 5 heavyweights in total, their belt doesn’t mean a god damned thing.

Accusing a fighter who has never tested positive for a steroid test means something, it means you are trying to ruin someones career without any proof and that makes you a jealous little “idiota”.

I’d call you a retard but clearly you speak spanish so I guess you’d be a retarda.

by DirtyML on Dec 25, 2009 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

Does he want to fight K1 or mma? Can’t just sit on the belt like this. I want to see Fedor take it from him.

by BJPennfan on Dec 25, 2009 11:13 AM EST reply actions

agreed...

this story is really asking the question of rather or not sf should strip his belt….I think they should. He’s so big everywhere else, why would it matter to him anyway right?
