Strikeforce signs K-1 star and MMA veteran Melvin Manhoef

Melvin-manhoef_medium
K-1 wrecking machine and mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran, Melvin Manhoef (23-6-1), is once again set to put his all-around skills to the test when he debuts with the San Jose-based Strikeforce promotion in the coming weeks.

MMAmania.com confirmed the signing earlier today.

While a Dec. 19 bout against Robbie Lawler has been rumored for "Evolution," nothing is official at this time and a more likely time line for his debut would be early 2010.

Manhoef looked "Marvelous" in the opening round of his DREAM 10 fight against Paulo Filho back in July, putting the Brazilian grappling stud on queer street with his trademark blitzkrieg of punches; however, Manhoef ultimately fell short after the fight hit the mat.

He's going to need to keep his ground game sharp if he plans to make himself a stateside contender. There are a bevy of top middleweights under the Strikeforce banner with serviceable grappling skills that could negate the power punching of the hard-hitting Hollander.

Assuming he doesn't separate them from their consciousness first.

Star-divide

Prior to the Filho bout, Manhoef went toe-to-toe with "Super Samoan" Mark Hunt during the stacked New Year’s Eve Fields Dynamite!! card at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan on Dec. 31, 2008. Despite being at a huge size advantage, as well as taking the fight on literally a few days notice, Manhoef needed just 18 seconds to dispatch of the granite-chinned heavyweight.

Strikeforce has continued to bolster its talent roster with quality signings and Manhoef is no exception. Aside from being the Cage Rage Light Heavyweight Champion, "No Mercy" has a 37-8 kickboxing record with 27 knockouts.

Expect fireworks in his upcoming debut.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on Manhoef's upcoming opponent.

Solid signing

Not Earth-shattering by any means, but you’ll never see a boring Manhoef fight.

Melvin / Evangelista Santos was awesome.

thanks intro!!

wow man crazy finish to that fight!! you never like to see guys gass like that, kind of unprofessional standing in the ring not doing anything but it was great to see the flurries after they regained a little energy.

Yea that was an instant classic

Also He took on Hunt on 1 days notice, they can set it up for the 19th against Lawler.

Very excited about SF!

Melvin is one of the most violent and brutal fighters that I have ever seen in combat sports.

Manhoef vs. Lawler would be amazing! I would bet a ton of money on Manhoef in that fight!

The Fertita’s CAN NOT be happy about what SF is doing right now!

by John G. on Dec 2, 2009 8:42 PM EST up reply actions

agree

good signing and I would love to see him v. Lawler! Stay on yer feet MM!

EXCITING FIGHT BUT....

a terrible advert for professional athletes, hands by their sides just throwing power shots.they was both completely spent.

by scott1 on Dec 2, 2009 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

Who said it was textbook

We can all pick apart any single fight we see and call it a terrible advert.

Who cares……it was fun to watch.

Would you rather they wrestled for two rounds?

Baaaaaad....

Matchup for Lawler if that fight happens. I see Robbie taking a nap.

Robbie hasn’t been put to sleep in a while, and has a good chin. I think it will be a great back and forth fight. Good for Strikeforce.

I just wonder, with Robbie being so close with Matt Hughes, and cornering alot of the HIT Squad fighters at UFC events, why is he not back in the UFC? Dana’s had blogs with Robbie in them, and they seem cool. Maybe Robbie likes trying to be big fish in small(er) pond. That or he realizes that he wont see Middleweight gold at the UFC, long as the Spider is still there.

by Synyster_08 on Dec 2, 2009 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

I don't care how good Robbie's chin is

Anyone who can KO Mark Hunt can KO Robbie Lawler. Don’t get caught by this man, thats all I have to say

if nick diaz can wobble lawler

melvin would knock his head off. lawler better be looking to take it to the ground or it’ll be sleepytime

by wandwagon on Dec 2, 2009 12:49 PM EST up reply actions

awesome this card just keeps getting better

Evolution proves they don’t need FEDOR on every STRIKEFORCE card (which us with brains already knew) but maybe now some the lil babies wil see their very capable of solid cards.

Not a chance

Hatred runs deep my friend. Even in the midst of terrible UFC cards, they will still hate on Strikeforce no matter what.

In the name of the Fedor, the Anderson and the GSP, Amen.

Yeah Daniel

Because casual fans know who Malvin is. You and I both live in Canada, how many PPV’s do you think SF will do for their next event? You do know Showtime is PPV here right?

SF is NO JOKE!

There is no doubt that the Fertita’s and Dana CANT be happy about what SF is managing to accomplish!

Very exciting time for mma fans!

I cant tell you how hype I am for Evolution, especially if they feed Lawler to Melvin!

Everybody in SF 185 lb division is 1 dimensionel. It makes for some great fights and some very predictable fights.

Echo in here

“It makes for some great fights and some very predictable fights.”

Exactly……and I predict that every single fight Manhoef is in for Strikeforce will be entertaining as hell.

Can’t beat that.

Never heard anything

…about announcements.

You may be thinking of on of Dana’s “Huge Announcements”. Like the Bud Light deal….lmao.

NO he was thinking of SF

Intro chooses to not acknowledge the fact that Scott Coker is doing the same thing as DW does. Only difference being that Dana at least gives us a small crappy announcement when he promises big announcements. You know what we are talking about Intro. The 2 HW signings that were going to change the world of MMA.

Great for strikeforce

Melvin will be a great addition to strikeforce’s middle weight division. Melvin vs Lawler would be an awesome fight. I think melvin vs king mo would also be very good fight.
