Vitor Belfort: Nate Marquardt is a good fighter to raise my name in this division

I_cfc_medium

Props: Terra.com.br

Quoteworthy:

Look, as far as I know the UFC still didn’t give me any opponent ,but Marquardt would be a good one. They still didn’t talk to me. Nobody got through to me so far. But if this rumor is sounding off that’s because it must be serious. I think Nate is an excellent athlete. He has good takedowns, is a strong guy and strikes well too. It’s a good fight to raise my name in this category.”

Vitor Belfort talks about a possible match up against Nate Marquardt to determine the true number one contender to Anderson Silva's middleweight belt. "The Phenom" has recently expressed his desire to have a definitive opponent for his next fight and does not mind throwing leather with another contending middleweight while "The Spider" takes as much time as he needs to heal from his recent elbow surgery. While a fight against Marquardt is just speculation at this point, it would go a long way in clearing the murky waters of the 185-pound division. If the UFC does pull the trigger on Belfort vs. Marquardt, who takes it and why? Opinions, please.

Vitor is the man

That guy is a warrior and in the form of his life, he’ll be the toughest test for Andy so far and a fight with either him or Nate would be huge. He’s one of the nicest and most respectful guys in the sport as well as one of the most talented, he deserves a title shot in my opinion but I’d still love to see him fight a top contender like Nate, win/lose he has my respect. War Phenom!

finally something that makes sense

Vitor is a great fighter and a great guy. But a shot @ the gold after one catch weight fight, just doesn’t cut it for me & really shits on Nate who earned his 2nd shot in great fashion.
I got Nate in this one & I really hope UFC does what’s right and makes this fight happen.

Nate would get destroyed again

by Silva and nobody but hardcore fans would even care. That fight has no market appeal. Nate hasn’t beaten or even fought a big name since he got destoyed by Silva the last time. He’s not a headliner and even after the Forrest destruction, people still aren’t lining up to buy the Spider’s fights. Vitor is fresh, he’s charismatic, he has a great story and one of the best highlight reels in MMA. Except for whining Marquardt fans who are upset that he’s not getting another title shot (that even they don’t think he can win), there’s WAY more interest in a Belfort/Silva fight. Marquardt is a big step backward for Vitor after he just KO’d the former champ and Nate’s never beaten anyone in his whole career comperable to a Rich Franklin.

This is good if you want to see Anderson Silva defend his belt every 18 months. Both guys are top contenders and I’d rather they not eliminate themselves. Granted, Silva could fight at LHW in the interim, but title fights are more fun.

by Redravi7_2000 on Dec 2, 2009 10:06 AM EST reply actions

Silva’s only got 3 fights left on his contract and he’s made it clear that he plans to retire from MMA when that deal expires. After RJJ’s latest setback I don’t know whether there’s still any plans for a future Andy-RJJ boxing match but Andy is still set to retire at a relatively young age, as he wants to leave the sport on top. No point giving Nate the shot when his biggest win is Maia and he’s already been destroyed by Andy not that long ago, I’d prefer to see Vitor get the next shot but if Andy-Vitor and Hendo-Nate aren’t happening then Vitor-Nate makes the most sense, Karo-Alves showed what happens when you try to avoid putting the top 2 contenders against each other to earn a title fight and give them easier fights and both Vitor and Nate need to keep busy.

by David W-S on Dec 2, 2009 10:23 AM EST up reply actions

BS

more recent interviews say he will not retire

by JRE on Dec 2, 2009 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

what interviews?

I too was under impression he’s done after 3. Not saying ur lying but I wouldn’t mind being further educated on the supposed non retiring

by daniel worby on Dec 2, 2009 12:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

This is tough

I think Vitor is the man I really do but we still need to remember he’s only beaten Franklin so far. Yea there was Lindland before the UFC but still. I think Nate needs a title fight now 1st and then Vitor can have 1 more fight against someone else before getting a title shot. I wont be mad if Vitor gets a shot but like RedRavi said I dont want to see them elimnate themselves & Silva needs to defend his belt soon!

by IrishMikey on Dec 2, 2009 10:20 AM EST reply actions

Dont do this

I truly hate Silva and his shady ass managar, they dictate to the UFC their demands and if they arent met the fighter gets “injured”. They pick and chose and if they dont like it they dodge the fight and set the opponent up with another top guy to make it easier for Silva.

I wish Soares was just banned from the UFC.

by Lester The Pimp on Dec 2, 2009 10:31 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, and you know all this how? Mind reading? Perhaps — just perhaps — Silva’s surgery recovery is taking exactly as long as has been reported. As if that’s such a stretch to believe. Give me a break with all this lame conspiracy crap. It’s really getting old.

by MMACrossfire on Dec 2, 2009 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

you need to pay attention

when hendo was next in line silva’s manager said he had an injury, as soon as hendo was out of the picture silva said he was 200% ready to fight when it looked like matquart was next in line. his status changes with his opponent. there is no conspiracy, only the facts.

by Conan the Barbarian on Dec 2, 2009 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

completely silly

Anderson would never ever ever never ever ever dodge a fight in any shape or form. Ever.

Clear?
Crystal?

THX

by daniel worby on Dec 2, 2009 12:38 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

amen, Lester & Conan

anybody who doesn’t think Silva is hand-picking hasn’t been paying attention. The on-and-off injury reports, backseat matchmaking, irrellevant callouts like Mir and RJJ, retirement threats, buddy-skipping, and “I’ll fight him but not for my belt” crap have got me wishing Silva would just shut up and retire already. If he really wants to “challenge himself” he should go to SF and fight Fedor. Silva is a premadonna.

by (shonuff) on Dec 2, 2009 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

Ouch

Personally, I want to see Vitor and Nate get individual title shots. None of this “fight each other first” crap. The MW division needs as many contenders as it can get, not less contenders. As it is, it’s already been just about 8 months since we saw Anderson defend his MW title. Looking like it might be a year at this point. If he’s not interested in defending the title, then vacate and let Vitor/Nate happen for the title. This is just getting ridiculous. It honestly sounds like Anderson’s manager wants everyone at MW to self-destruct so they can go “see? no reason to fight!” It’s pretty bad.

by n4tacon on Dec 2, 2009 10:38 AM EST reply actions

I’d love to see Nate square up with Vitor. This would be an excellent fight. I bet Nate would totally be up for that right. Vitor certainly sounds like he’s game for it. Why hold the flippin’ middleweight division on hold while Silva recovers? If these two camps want to throw leather, why stop them?

by MMACrossfire on Dec 2, 2009 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

Oh well

Looks like its going to happen like it or not. So who does Silva fight then when he recovers? No more of this Light-Heavy crap. Defend the title for christ sakes. Now we have to wait another 6 months for a match-up. Nate and Belfort get injured in the fight so Silva takes on Bisping. I can see it now. monkeyballs

by ElStIkO on Dec 2, 2009 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

Vitor doesn't wanna fight Anderson

Vitor would rather fight Nate than Anderson. He said before he was not ready for a title shot. Nate already had one and lost same with Hendo. All these guys have beaten everyone but Anderson so it is time they fight eachother. Hendo is gone but he did beat Vitor long ago and was beating Anderson until he got hit with a knee. I can understand why Hendo was pissed and left, he beat Vitor the one time they had a fight and since his loss to Anderson he beat Franklin and Bisping and another dude. Vitor also beat Franklin but gets a shot right away cause Anderson already beat Hendo. Let Vitor and Nate fight with the winner to get Anderson. Pray that Wandy can win 2 fights in a row and get Anderson.

by hatteras on Dec 2, 2009 10:52 AM EST reply actions

Vitor would fight Anderson tomorrow

It’s Soares who doesn’t want Anderson fighting Vitor.

Side note: Somewhere, right now…..Henderson is saying "DOH !!!!!!!!!! "

with all these recent injuries they should resign hendo and get him on a card asap.

by roy1 on Dec 2, 2009 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

Hedo lost his bargaining power

As soon as this fight is announced……Hendo has nothing left to bargain with I’m afraid.

disagreed intro

Mania has had a few vitor threads and quotes where he’s said he’s Willing to have a fight at 185 before Anderson. And its probs in his best interest so he know’s he’s in peak shape before taking on the one and only

by daniel worby on Dec 2, 2009 12:44 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I'm confused

isn’t Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen happening at UFC 109?

by ducknow on Dec 2, 2009 11:10 AM EST reply actions

with Anderson still sick they are setting up Nate and Vitor.

Belfort already signed the contract so Nates the only logical replacement.

by ElStIkO on Dec 2, 2009 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

I don't care anymore

Just get Vitor in the cage and let him fight already. He sustained very little damage in the Franklin fight so he should have been able to fight sooner rather than later.

besides Marquardt would kill Vitor.

by JRE on Dec 2, 2009 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

you Nate-huggers are delusional

the guy has never beaten a top-ranked fighter! NEVER! Never fought Hendo, Franklin, Vitor…never even beat someone of Wandy or Bisping’s calibre. I like Nate a lot, but he isn’t a headliner yet, much less deserving to skip over legends like Hendo and Vitor. Let him at least beat a Wandy or a Bisping before you feed him to the Spider again!

by (shonuff) on Dec 2, 2009 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

do it....

fight makes sense and having Brock and Sliva out is not good for the fans, so why noy make the best possible fights in their divisions
Tough fight to call..

by Robert(1) on Dec 2, 2009 11:54 AM EST reply actions

This would be awesome,

Nate will kick the living shit out of Vitor and then he can quit or Dana will send him packing, then all you Vitor nuthuggers will realize that he is nothing when it comes to a title shot. He doesnt deserve a title shot but Nate does. lololol this is great man I really hope this happens, what a mismatch……….Nate by total destruction.

by HEELHOOK on Dec 2, 2009 12:23 PM EST reply actions

LOL

That’s how I see it. People thought Maia would put up a fight too…

by JRE on Dec 2, 2009 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

IF U R COMPARING MAIA TO VITOR U R A F*ING RETARD!!

spider gotta a title shot after beating chris leben r u kidding me.At least Vitor killed sum1 decent like franklin! Nate’s a good fighter & i like him but he hasnt fought any1 like Vitor. Of course U guys want Nate to win cuz he’s white & he’s from the USA, but u need 2 get your f*ing head examined if u think nates guna walk through the Phenom!

by d*locc on Dec 2, 2009 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

hahahahahaha

Nate will not kick Vitors Ass. My god not even close

by ElStIkO on Dec 2, 2009 1:32 PM EST reply actions

not even close?

You mean that Nate can’t beat Vitor in a popularity contest that you are judging. Ok So no matter what happens when they fight, Nate can never be higher than Vitor on your Fav’s list. but in an actual fight…

by JRE on Dec 2, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

popularity? Skill.

by ElStIkO on Dec 2, 2009 1:56 PM EST reply actions

pleaaaaaaaaaaaaase

it wasnt long ago when vitor lost 5 out of 7 fights he was basically chuck lidell…he suddenly wins a few fights against non ranked opponents and you guys think hes the automatic number 1 contender? number 1 contenders dont lose 5 out of 7 fights at ANYTIME in their career

jake shields is the highest ranked fighter to have never fought i highly ranked fighter...i cant wait till hendo signs to strikeforce and murders that talentless waste of flesh

by HellaHectic on Dec 2, 2009 2:41 PM EST reply actions

Non Ranked?

Ill Give you Linland but Franklin…………..not ranked?

dude.....i am

by brendog on Dec 2, 2009 2:45 PM EST reply actions
