Quoteworthy:

"The much-anticipated bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is all but set for March 13, a source told Yahoo! Sports. Mayweather has agreed to terms and promoter Bob Arum is making a trip to Manila, Philippines, to finalize a deal with Pacquiao, the source said.Las Vegas, Dallas and New Orleans are the front-runners to host the bout, which is expected to become the highest-grossing boxing match in the sport’s history."

Most anticipated boxing match ever?

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS FIGHT!

Pacman just keeps achieving constantly, every time he takes a fight it’s tougher than his last, and every time people doubt him, and every time he pulls it off. I can’t help but back Manny.
WAR PACMAN!!

In the name of the Fedor, the Anderson and the GSP, Amen.

If it does happen (which it won't)...

This will be the biggest match in combat sports history period. I can’t think of anything of this magnitude.

There did used to be a nice HW division in boxing

Ali, Frazier, Holmes, Foreman, Norton, etc.

Good times and riches and son of a bitches
I've seen more than I can recall.

not to mention

The WARS between Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, and Duran….back in the golden age when boxing mattered and fighters were household names who fought on ABC’s Wide World of Sports and had their pictures on cereal boxes…because people actually CARED

by (shonuff) on Dec 2, 2009 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Those are definitely historical fights

but how many of them were between the consensus #1 and #2 p4p fighter in the sport. This is Fedor-A Silva, A Silva – GSP caliber of fights. The ones you guys are naming i would consider them to the likeable to Wand-Liddell or Fedor-Cro Cop. Great battles, great fighters, big impact, highly anticipated but no necessarily the best fighters across all division at that point in time. Just my take on it though, not hating on the others.

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Dec 2, 2009 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

even if you're right

and Hearns, Hagler, Leonard, and Duran weren’t the consensus top P4P at the time (and I think they were), they were way more famous and popular than Mayweather and Pac, AND they were fighting at a time when boxing had a lot more fans and a lot more credibility as a sport. IOW, they were bigger fights because more people caredabout them. Same can be said for Ali/Frazier and Ali/Foreman. Mayweather/Pac may make more money, but that’s because the prices are astronomical and because of shifting economical factors. Mayweather/Pac may be the biggest/best fight in recent years, during a long dry spell for boxing, but you’re comparing it to the biggest fights during a golden eras when boxing popularity was at a premium,

Pac V May

Pacquaio looked awsome against Cotto, picked him apart and the more the fight went on, the fresher Pac looked. My moneys gonna be on Pac for the W, should be an epic battle!!!!!! Can’t wait.

Huh?

With the amount of cancellations, contract disputes, injuries, steroid….er, I mean…intestinal problems that MMA has had over the last six months…..I think MMA fans need to take a look in the mirror before singling out boxing lately.

Hopefully this fight happens

I’m not getting excited until both sign, surely even egos, records and money can’t get in the away of the biggest fight of all time, Pacman-Mayweather will make both men an amazing amount of money and put them on the same level as the likes of Ali, Frazier and Sugar Ray in terms of name value. This fight has to happen and even these 2 notoriously tough negotiators have to agree to it for the sake of the sport, there is no good reason preventing this fight.

The most anticipated boxing match ever was Tyson/Holyfield 1. Only because of the modern marketing machine. Otherwise it would be Ali/Foreman

by McArthur... on Dec 2, 2009 10:12 AM EST reply actions

Biggest fight in history

Sure, there were some huge fights back in the day that would one could argue were bigger and more important (Thrilla’ in Manilla’…….Tyson / Lewis……Tyson/Holyfield…..etc…….), but with the money being so huge right now, and these two guys being #1 and #2 (not only in their weight divisions…..but in all of boxing) respectively……this is the biggest fight ever.

I heard that they wanted to go head to head with a UFC PPV……hopefully thay don’t.

This is to boxing what Fedor vs Brock Lesnar would be to MMA.

It’s funny how Bob Arum and Richard Schaefer are working together to get this deal done, but the UFC pres says boxing sucks because different promoters don’t let their guys fights each other. Time and time again in recent years, boxing promoters have turned away from their old-school “never dealing with other promoters” thing and are working together to get the big fights signed, sealed, and delivered. Why do the UFC execs, who won’t cross-promote for one single fight (the only MMA fight that would even come close to comparing to Pacman/Floyd), still use the “boxing is the blue-print for what not to do” speel…..when they won’t bend on even one single fight?….the one fight that everyone wants to see !!!!!!!

Wouldn't bother the UFc I don't think

If it does end up being head to head……the UFC’s numbers won’t change much IMO.

Their numbers are relatively steady which means that it’s always the same people buying the events anyway….the die hards.

UFC should change it up and throw the Machida/Rua rematch on Spike……that may take a few viewers from the boxing PPV.

But, of course….I’m just speculating on rumours that boxing is on the same night. Maybe it won’t be.

I’m a big MMA fan, but no way would I miss the biggest fight in history! It would be idiotic if the UFC were to put an even on the same day as this one. Dana White wouldn’t even be there…

by T0R0 on Dec 2, 2009 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

UFC may not have a choice

Usually the UFC are the ones counter-programming other fights, but in this case it sounds like boxing may schedule the same night as a UFC event…….Doh!!!!

Boxing matches are usually schedulled so far ahead that the UFC can pick and choose weekends other than the big boxing matches, but the UFC has schedulled so far ahead right now the boxing can go head to head if they so choose.

Spot on, Pacman’s never been in a boring fight and Mayweather is pretty entertaining to watch as well, both are fun to watch in their own way and both are the top 2 boxers in the world at this point. Anyone who isn’t excited about this fight isn’t a fight fan.

Dana and M-1 should use this business structure to make Brock vs Fedor !!!!!!!

Call up Oscar De La Hoya.

Let Golden Boy Promotions and HBO handle the promotional aspect of the fight.

Fedor is draped in his M-1 apparel.

Brock in his UFC apparel.

by introvert on Dec 2, 2009 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

you guys miss the point

Co-promoting would mean that the UFC would have to acknowledge another promotion as partner-worthy. They are going for brand monopoly. It’s not about them not giving up a share of the profits on a single event, it’s about them not giving legitimacy to a competing promotion. The UFC wants to be seen as the NFL of MMA. Co-promoting would be like the NFL putting it’s superbowl champion against the winner of the UFL.

by (shonuff) on Dec 2, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

Good analogy

Except you left out the part where the Colts and/or Saints (pick the best team in the NFL) plays for the UFL.

Pride screwing over the UFC cost us any chance of seeing this happen, plus I doubt that Dana wants to look like an idiot during a live PPV again when his posterboy is beaten by an outsider, Dana’s commentary made Rampage-Liddell I even more entertaining, so much for the $250,000.

by David W-S on Dec 2, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

how did PRIDE screw the UFC???

you mean the fact that nobody in Japan wants to do business with an unprofessional disrespectful prick like Dana? Dana himself admitted that the Japanese hate him and won’t deal with the UFC because of their personal distaste for him. I think Fedor has the same beef. It’s just another case of Dana screwing himself because he can’t control his mouth and conduct himself like a professional.

Vegas and Dallas make sense

Vegas is Vegas. Dallas has a new billion dollar stadium and would sell a crapload of tickets but, the Superdome? I’ve never been there but from what I hear is a crappy stadium. I think they will stay in Vegas.

I am like others that won’t believe this fight until it’s signed. It doesn’t mention the terms that Mayweather agreed to which could be ridiculously lop-sided in his favor. He may have done this on purpose that Pacman refuses and then Gayweather can say that it’s Manny’s fault that the fight won’t happen. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Gayweather trying to set up Manny to be the bad guy.

Possibly

Mayweather is pretty good a bargaining.

Anything other than a 50/50 split would be ridiculous, imo.

Mayweather will want more

We know he will demand more than 50/50 because he doesn’t really want to fight Pacman and it’s not because he’s scared. The day Mayweather loses he will no longer be able to sell fights because his still of fighting is not very entertaining to most people. Most people watch his fights hoping to see him get destroyed so, unless Mayweather is certain he will win and make a big profit out of the fight, it may not be worth jeopardizing his career for this fight. However, boxing needs this fight and the fans want it badly so let’s hope it happens.

by MMACHAMP on Dec 2, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

i like a 40/40 split with the winner geting the other 20%

i think mayweather will beat pacman. manny throws punches in bunches, but he almost always ends up off balance after a cominaton. a skilled fighter like mayweather will make him pay for that.
the one thing manny has going for him is that he will probably punch enough to outpoint mayweather for most of the rounds.
mayweather is a more skilled figter though, manny has never fought a guy like that before. watch the marquez fights. marquez outboxed paquio and mayweather has more power, speed, and skill than marquez. i have mayweather winning by split decision or ko.

by Conan the Barbarian on Dec 2, 2009 2:44 PM EST reply actions

i doubt dana will counter program with a ufc ppv because no one will watch it!!!!!

he probably will show every main event in recent memory on spike for free though. it still won’t matter. this fight is bigger than anything mma has ever seen.

brock vs fedor

Could have been the only counter.
Too bad fedor signed with strikeforce.

Still no way manny wins imo
Marquez was only man to come close, and money may toyed with him.

Mayweather wins this ud 8 rounds to 4

Possibly Boring

Being a huge fight fan of any style (mma, boxing, kick-boxing, etc…) I feel this fight will not live up to expectations. As nice as it would be to see Floyd Mayweather get put to the canvas by Manny, it just wouldn’t happen. I am a huge fan of Manny’s boxing style, it is very exciting to watch. However Mayweather would just back pedal & shoulder roll his way to victory like he has done in many of his previous fights, leaving fans disappointed and continually pissed off with Mayweather.

This fight will be the biggest money making fight in Boxing history too(the biggest and most remembered fights will always be Ali vs Frazier) & possibly the most watched. There for no matter what card the UFC would try to counter it with, would get crushed. Even if you could take every MMA fighter while still in their prime and do a super card, Boxing still commands a much larger fan base. For example you could have a MMA card stacked like:

Heavyweight: Lesnar vs Fedor
Light Heavyweight: Chuck Liddell vs Shogun Rua (circa 05/06)
Middleweight: Anderson Silva vs Wanderlie Silva (while both in their primes)
Welterweight: GSP vs Matt Hughes (while both in their primes)
Lightweight : BJ Penn vs Diego Sanchez

& with all these great fights Manny vs Mayweather would still sell more PPV’s and bring in more revenue (unfortunately).

Every fighter has a plan until he gets hit

Brock vs. Fedor???

Don’t get me wrong…this IS the biggest draw in MMA today, but do you remember a little over a year ago…it was ALL about Randy vs. Fedor. Notice something? Fedor is the only constant here. To say that Brock vs. Fedor would be relevant to battle Pacman/Mayweather is just crazy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not happy about it. MMA, to me, is a much more legitimate sport that boxing..hell..it has every form of boxing intertwined within itself. Why do you think it’s fastest growing sport EVER? I don’t even keep up with boxing anymore other than headlines and quick recaps cause to me it’s just not entertaining enough to watch anymore with the progression of MMA. But, even I would watch this fight. This has been on “what would happen if” lists for years now. This has not changed, only been fueled more and more. Just that you all are agreeing that it’s on a level with Ali/Frazier and Tyson/Holyfield should be enough. Do you realize what you’re saying…everyone and their grandmother knows those fights and how big they were…when boxing wasn’t just relevant…but THE SHIT. And to put this fight in that category in a day and age where boxing truly is a dying sport (yes it is, beyond a few top draws out of the 1000s of champions out there…boxing isn’t relevant anymore. It’s just that it’s big draws..well they are still BIG draws), that to me is utterly amazing and will make this fight if and when it happens go down as the biggest fight in boxing history. Just my 2 cents.

WHY DO PEOPLE STILL DOUBT PACQUIAO?

I look at it this way:

watching Mayweather fight is like poetry in motion, his moves are very crisp and he probably has the fastest jab in the world. His Balance is solid and he likes to pivet off of his front foot. He makes his opponents come to him and his jab snaps hard when they get too close. Mayweather rarely throws a combination more than 3 or 4 punches at a time because he really doesnt need to. His opponents come to him thus making his jab and straight punches very effective… which is very smart.
BUT…. I think he’s too fast for his own good… One thing about mayweather is that he barely shuffles his feet… HE’S so fast that he doesnt really need to shuffle to avoid a punch… he makes very quick steps to avoid punches so he doesnt shuffle and skip and because of that, his footwork has grown to be very stiff, VERY FAST, but stiff… I think that will be a good weakness for Pacquiao to exploit…

However, Pacquiao is a fighter who is on the other side of the spectrum… Pacquiao is very fluid… He likes to move forward towards his opponent, but he always comes at you from different directions… He’s always moving… constantly shuffling and skipping his feet… THE MAN NEVER STANDS STILL! Since he is always moving its hard to guess where his punches are coming from, I bet he has the fastest and most accurate 4-6 punch combinations… He never throws just a single punch. He throws at least 4 punches at a time and his hands come from all different directions… His combos are on another level… While most boxers struggle to connect with a single counter punch, Manny is able to counter with a 5 punch combo.
ALSO, Manny always moves around with both hands up, blocking his face. His body frame is so compact that he can pretty much block his face and the majority of his torso at the same time just by keeping his gloves infront of his face and forarms in front of his body, thus making it very hard for mayweather to penetrate with his jabs and his quick straight punches…

I see the fight going down like this….
Manny is gonna hop and shuffle towards mayweather with his hands up… when he gets close, mayweather is gonna throw those super fast straight punches… Manny will block the first jab… after that Manny will counter those straights with his Combos… Even though Manny will probably get caught with a few punches when he starts his combos, it wont really matter because Manny’s flurrys will score more points on the judges score cards… So we will probably see this over and over through out the fight. Of course mayweather is gonna step back and bob and weave like he does, but when both fighters make contact with each other, its gonna be Manny whos gonna win the exchanges.

So I say PACQUIAO by DECISION……… AND I BET THE FIGHT WONT HAPPEN UNTIL THE SUMMER…lol
