Two things...

1) It still bugs me when fighters say: “I train with him” or “he’s my friend, so I’d never fight him.” Whether it be the Brazillians or Shields and Diaz. Just rubs me the wrong way. You are paid to fight and IMO, you should want to fight the best, friend or no friend.

2) I could see a GSP/Shields fight going the same way that the GSP/Fitch fight went, but I wonder if Shields wouldn’t wilt a little quicker and not survive for the decision.

GSP/Shields

I think it would go a little similar to the fight against Fitch but Shields has worse stand up than Fitch. I know shields is a solid grappler but he doesn’t have the hips that GSP does and he…just like everyone else…would succum to his takedowns whenever GSP wants to take the fight to the ground. GSP would probably keep it standing for quite a while agsinst him and just beat his face to a bloody pulp until Shields crumples. Shields would have a hard time against quite a few of the top dogs in the UFC’s WW division.

Hendo - Shields

SHOULD NEVER BE MENTIONED IN THE SAME SENTENCE EVER!!!!!!!!!! Henderson would KILL him. Shields would be top 5 in the UFC WW division, but no way he beats GSP. I’d like to see him fight Fitch, Kos, Alves, and … wait for it… BJ Penn!!

I agree about fighters refusing to fight their BFFs

Two guys on a football team could be lifelong friends, but as soon as one of them gets traded and they play against each other, they’re going to knock the shit out of each other and shake hands at the end of the day.

Let him fight henderson already!

Then all this bullshit hype around this kid will be gone! He doesnt stand a chance with GSP, like you said buster he would get picked apart on the feet and taken down at will! i cant believe people even think he would be a threat in the UFC, i think most of the good wrestlers would give him problems. Some douche on here the other day was claiming that sheilds could beat anderson silva!! WTF? LOL Some people just blow my mind!

I like Jake but he has no chance against Gsp.

Sorry dude

But you should just stop talking GSP because Hendo is going to ruin your career. It’s just losses after this Shields. Retire while you can.

Great interview

Not surprising that people still find a way to criticise Shields but I’d love to get to see him fight GSP, at 170 he’s one of the best in the world. He’s much more dangerous on the ground than Fitch, in fact he probabaly has the best BJJ in that division other than Almeida and has better wrestling than Big Dog. No complaints from me about him being loyal to Nick and not wanting to fight him, both of them are 2 of the best fighters in SF and I hope that one day they can both be champions.

Alright bro...

Diaz is legit…..FOR STRIKEFORCE. Name me one person who has left the UFC and become a contender. That’s right, no one.

Shields is 2ND RATE in Strikeforce and always will be. Man up, finish your contract, then come play with the big boys.

Wally, if you don't mind I would like to tell you a few fighters who have left the UFC and were still contenders.

BJ Penn-You’ve heard of him, right? He left to fight K1 and MMA elsewhere. He has returned and is currently kicking holes in peoples faces.
Josh Barnett- Left the UFC and was considered the number 2 HW for years after leaving.
Nick Diaz-You just said he was legit.
Matt Lindland-I hate him, but he has been a good MW for a long time. Even after leaving the UFC.
Dan Henderson- Just left and is still a contender. Perhaps second best in the world at his weight.
Vitor Belfort- He left and has now returned. He has always been a solid fighter.

Honorable mentions to Randelman, Oleg Taktarov, Royce Gracie, Bas Rutten.

You should know that the UFC doesn’t have all the best fighters in the world.

Jay

BJ – back in the UFC
Jost Barnett – Juice head, think that nullifies other arguements
Diaz – Legit for Strikeforce but would lose to any top 10 fighter.
Lindland – Decent, but extremely boring. Do think what the UFC did to him was messed up.
Hendo – Got me there. Put up a battle for Quinton and went to war with Silva. IMO hands down the #2 in the world.
Belfort – Back in the UFC, so why are we having this arguement.

Though you do make some solid points, Hendo is the basis for your arguement. And 1 fighter out of how many does not make a solid thesis. And I never said they have ALL the top fighters, just the cream of the crop. I think BJ Penn, GSP, Silva, Lyoto, and Brock would beat anyone (minus Fedor) out there.

He was giving examples of people who left WHEN THEY WERE TOP CONTENDERS. The fact that many of them eventually returned does not change the fact that they were top talent when the left the UFC.

And then God said "Let there be light," to which Chuck Norris replied, "say please."

but more importantly…

Who cares if not many UFC fighters have left for other promotions. Of course they won’t, they’re paid better and the UFC is much better known. That alone doesn’t necessarily mean anything about the quality of the fighters themselves.

And then God said "Let there be light," to which Chuck Norris replied, "say please."

I think you got my definition of 2nd rate confused.

I meant by being in Strikeforce he was 2nd rate. If you understood correctly, I apologize. Realize you are a very well respected poster jay.

by WallyBallz on Dec 18, 2009 8:58 PM EST reply actions

Wally, don't apologize, we're cool.

We are just talking. You said “Name me one person who has left the UFC and become a contender” I just answered that question. I wasn’t being a smart ass or hostile.

Being in SF isn’t exactly second rate as you can tell by their growing roster of young and veteran talent. Sure they were pretty lame a year or two ago, but they are growing and making all the right moves. Like frosnt1 said, most of the good fighters do fight for UFC, the money and sponsorship opportunities have been the best there for a while now. But when Dana is finished fucking this entire thing up and SF is running the sport, names of organizations aren’t going to matter any more.

SF, unlike UFC, is interested and willing to cross promote. That basically means that anyone not signed to a Zuffa contract can fight for them. That is a shit load of people. Take a look at the latest rankings. There are a lot of great fighters available to fight for SF, even if they don’t really fight for SF full time.
