Vancouver City Council has passed the bill to regulate the sport of mixed martial arts by a margin of 6-3 today, meaning fans in the city can expect a UFC event in the very near future.
The resolution didn’t come without conditions, however, with a two year trial period put in place.
City councilor, Tim Stevenson said:
"In the final analysis I do think we have to regulate this. In this society there are certain things that I might not agree with but the best way to deal with these is to regulate them. That’s what we're doing and I think a two-year deal is the best way to do that."
The news follows on from Massachusetts passing a bill to regulate the sport in that state earlier this month. With a UFC event planned for Montreal in May, fans in Vancouver may have something to look forward to at the back end of the summer.
