The Prodigy: 'Penn vs St. Pierre 3' if you want to sell 40,000 tickets at the Aloha Stadium

Gsp-penn-3_medium

Props: Honolulu Advertiser

Quoteworthy:

"I definitely want to fight (St. Pierre) again. What kind of fight do they want to put on in Abu Dhabi? Do they want me to fight a Frankie Edgar or a Gray Maynard? Or do they want me to fight a 'super fight' against somebody in Aloha Stadium, and do they think they can sell 40,000 tickets by putting me in against a Gray Maynard, or do they want me up against a bigger name?"

Fresh off his UFC 107 drubbing of Diego Sanchez, 155-pound champion BJ Penn looks forward to a future rematch with Georges St. Pierre after cleaning house in his current division. UFC President Dana White has gone on record approving of his eventual move back to welterweight, but "The Prodigy" can expect to fight a few contenders in the 170-pound weight class before getting a third crack at "Rush." We know Penn wants a third dance -- do the fans?

STFU BJ!!!….why would you want that…if this happens before BJ has to fight real WW’s I’ll do something drastic

GSP is BJ's white whale

i said eralier he will call out Georgey again in 2010, I guess i was a little premature in saying that.

If BJ puts on the right kind of weight (which he wont) then they could sell this fight and it would be competitive (which it wont be now) GSP just overwhelms BJ and any techincal advantage BJ has is nullified by that.

BH could pack on 40 pounds of solid muscle

and still be dominated by GSP. It wasn’t the size advantage, it was the skill advantage that won that fight for Georges. I might do something drastic too, Mac. Maybe we should plan it out and make it something really huge! LOL

STFU Crybaby J

Does this guy know when to stop???? He’ll cry so much that his mom will call up Dana and request this fight once again…..and at UFC 110 when GSP’s arm gets raised once again we’ll get to hear that whiney voice try to steal the thunder and have CBJ state “I want that fight……do you accept a rematch with me!!!!!”

If that happens, I will not watch another PPV event again unless it is live streaming or from my buddies illegal satellite.

And if BJ can beat the #1 contender he at least earned a shot and the proven best contender because really who can beat GSP at WW?

I agree! BJ vs. any WW besides GSP is very competitive! I posted this story earlier, and disagree with BJ, he could sell 40k tix in hawaii fighting kyle maynard! Here we go with 200 comments, most (canadians especially) will be bashing BJ. Can’t fault the guy for wanting to fight the best over what the LW division has to offer, which isn’t much!

by kevjack115 on Dec 17, 2009 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

exactly kevin at least he wants fights that challenge him and not fights he knows he will win no need to bash him for that. but it is true that he should not get a instant title shot with out earing it or unless gsp really wants it too.

by roy1 on Dec 17, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

the weasel should earn it

Give him Fitch, Alves, or KOS. He can’t be the first two for sure; KOS he may if KOS comes in with his stupid “I think I’m a boxer” plan given that he is a decorated wrestler……it isn’t the lack of skill stopping JB, it is the strenght and size differential.

by hairybumcrack on Dec 17, 2009 7:06 PM EST up reply actions

Wrong

BJ would beat undoubtedly Fitch and Alves….
Bro BJ may have looked weak against GSP and he may be avoiding takedowns lately to pursue KO’s but seriously consider what would happen if any of the three were out striking BJ..
HE would take them to the ground and submit them….

NOT TO MENTION

When GSP fought BJ the first time GSP was in phenominal shape and I guarantee that even though GSP has gotten a LOT better, he still posessed the ability of to murder fitch or alves in their current state now..

My point BJ lost twice but the first time he actually put a beating on a focused GSP which is more than I can say for any other fighter…

And please noone mention the fluke of a fight that he had with Serra

He would not be able to get takedowns

He may win a scramble or two for top position but he can’t take any of them down. And Alves would outwiegh BJ by 30 lbs.

I agree

Alves and Fitch would be difficult to takedown. They are some of the bigger fighters in their division. Diego couldn’t even lift one of Fitch’s legs of the ground. I would definately be interested to see how he would deal with these two. If he managed to get some power as well as the weight it he could well give them a good beating. Fighting either these two would definately be more exciting than fighting Hughes again, as anyone who is not anti BJ could see he would have won the last fight if not for his injury, and he would absolutely destroy Hughes now.

by Ade on Dec 18, 2009 4:23 AM EST up reply actions

Disgree

I don’t think BJ could beat Fitch,or Ko’s or Alves with the right game plan…those guys all have the power to take BJ down and grind out a 3 rnd decision… BJ just can’t give up that kind of weight… BJ could actually make 145lbs, that tells the size advantage story.

GSP cahones

I’m curious wandwagon,
What MW do you think would beat GSP? Any? Spider? Perhaps, it’s a tough call. Who else though? Think long. No one? Okay that’s what I thought.

Not much reason for him to go up there. He won’t change any anti fans minds anyways. Doesn’t matter what he does. If you don’t like the man now, your not going to later.

Anderson didn’t go up and fight the champ @ 205 (nor should he have), and GSP wouldn’t either. He’d beat any MW senseless with the exception of the MW’s that can fight at LHW (Spider/Nate) that’s it.

by daniel worby on Dec 17, 2009 5:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I never said I don't like the man

I think GSP is great, but he never mentioned ever wanting to fight at a bigger weight class, unless he was questioned about it. bj obviously did. anderson stepped up in a heartbeat to fight irvin to compete with the first afflication card. machida has talked about wanting to fight lesnar.
any sane person would know silva was going to clobber irvin and griffin, but he did the fight anyway, and it was entertaining, and i loved watching it.
I think Silva would be the only person to beat GSP at MW, any other MW will be a bigger challenge for him than the rest of the WW div.

by wandwagon on Dec 17, 2009 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

kinda agree

i am not bashing gsp he can stay at ww and be the best ever ww, but if he wants a tough challenge moving up could give that to him. most top p4p guys talk about fighting the best out there at any weight.

by roy1 on Dec 17, 2009 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

Nate Marquardt

Right now the #1 contender in the MW division is Nate Marquardt.

The problem is that GSP and Nate always work together before a fight and they don’t want to fight each other. Zahabi is one side and Jackson in the other? …And it won’t be fair for Nate if GSP gets a shot at Silva right away so…

If GSP moves up it’s gonna be against a guy like Bisping or Maia. If Nate gets his shot at SIlva and win the belt, forget GSP in the MW division.

by -Jee- on Dec 17, 2009 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

WRONG

Here is the list of MW that can beat GSP off the top of my head..
Anderson Silva
Dan Henderson
Vitor Belfort
Wanderlei Silva
ect…
And listen its not because they are necessarily better b/c technically speaking they are not but it is because GSP has been knocked out before and I just named a couple fighters that punch maybe 2..3..4 times harder than Matt Serra could ever punch..

Think about it.
If GSP really wanted to test himself and become a legend he would be determined to make the weight and go for it…
Plus now that I think about it with the way GSP trains and his constant improvement, shoot he might be the only one to ever beat the spider…
with the right weight of course

100% Agree!!!!!!!1

Roger,

All of these MW’s would beat GSP, and I believe fairly easily. All four are legends of the sport and have proven themselves many times. I would also add Nate and Rich Franklin (at MW) to that list, just liek with BJ, the size difference would just be to much for GSP. For the record, Anderson Silva would absolutely KO GSP inside of 3-4 minutes tops!!!!!!!

by Keifer1 on Dec 18, 2009 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

The size difference isn't too much for BJ.

Just against GSP it is. BJ would beat almost all other WW’s. You’re saying GSP couldn’t move up and beat Bisping, Maia?

Where’d you guys come from? And where did your knowledge of mma come from?

Wandy
Bisping
Hendo
Vitor

Would beat GSP? Why? Wandy is amazing to watch but definitely wouldn’t in his present shape. Bisping? No. Hendo? I doubt it. Gsp’s wrestling is insane and he’d have all 4 of the above mentioned fighters on their backs before they knew what was happening.

Serra didn t have to punch hard. He caught GSP slipping 2×. That’s lights out from a slap pretty well. To say “GSP got ko’d” is just lack of GSP knowledge. That happened once. Look how hard Penn and alves hit? He took em with stride. They’d be fighting at the same weight.

GSP only has 2 blemishes. Both were his own fault. He knows that we know that. He is flawless now and with the exception of a 50/50 fight with Anderson in which I wouldn’t be surprised to see go either way, GSP will not be de-throned. Not at MW either.

Flawless is when you hardly get touched…
The spider makes world class fighters look novice after he’s done with them…
GSP does dominate but he does get banged up and has occasional war’s and a war is something that we have not seen any fighter put the spider in..

if you think that A) bj is the same fighter that got dominated, then you’re VERY wrong. B) even GSP said himself that bj has small shoulders and their game plan was to tire him out. if he was stonger, and better conditioned, and trained like he trains now it WILL be a totally diff fight.

by Puck Head on Dec 17, 2009 4:48 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Exactly

I am a huge BJ Penn fan. He is my favorite fighter. That said, I would like to see him fight some big strong wrestlers at 170 before getting another crack at GSP. Bring on Fitch or Kos or even Hughes again (though I doubt Hughes would take that fight). If he can get past them, I think he has done enough in this great sport to earn another shot at the 170 strap. I don’t agree that there are a lot of intriguing matchups for GSP. BJ and GSP are very close to cleaning out their respective divisions.

by Deuce02 on Dec 17, 2009 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

Spot on

Either have BJ fight a top LW or have him face a MW contender, GSP-BJ III makes no sense at this point. BJ needs to earn his spot in the WW division, if he can beat one or two top contenders like Fitch, Alves or Kos and prove that he can make 170 properly i.e. not turning up well underweight (like he did in the Hughes rematch) or looking flabby (both GSP fights) and that he can beat the best in that division. You don’t see Andy demanding LHW title fights because of his accomplishments at MW.

Man, that’s what I’m saying. Just stay in your own division and dominate! Its not your job as the champion to find competition. Your organization provides it. Stay there and kill, kill, kill.

If you’d like to do what Andy does, go ahead, but no need to occupy both titles. Just smash the odd weight above you for ratings and entertainment and money.

Don’t move.

  1. HW = FEDOR
  2. MW = Anderson
  3. WW = GSP
  4. LW = Penn

Keep it that way. All the more impressive when one loses. I left lyoto out due to the big debate. Fair enough. But let these others do what they can and when they lose its HUGE NEWS!

Coming in with better conditioning should help BJ considerably for round 3 versus GSP.
I believe that was a big reason for his short fall in the last fight. The Prodigy is on a win streak with a full head of steam and mentally is at a higher level than before!

Don't count on GSP or Dana agreeing that GSP will fight in BJ's home state

BJ has no right on picking wetre the fight happens if GSP and Dana want to go through with the fight. But most fans want BJ to fight Alves or Fitch before he gets a shot at GSP again. As well GSP has been trying to bulk up to possibly fight Silva BJ fighting another WW is fine but GSP not yet BJ has to prove he is a contender in that division before that GSP happens.

It won't matter

BJ looked visibily nervous to me when he was in the ring before the last fight. I don’t question BJ’s cardio after this past weekend’s fight. I wouldn’t mind watching GSP fighting him again, I always like watching a fighter dominate.

Haha, BJ is the original prick

He can back it up and I love watching him fight but quotes like this one just baffle me. Some coach he was on TUF, he was supposed to be training Gray now he’s calling him boring and a waste of a fight. Plus he’s demanding another rematch with GSP after doing nothing at WW to earn it and trying to get a fight in Hawaii.

Because of BJ’s bitching (and Diego’s to be fair) I missed out on a sick main event in Manchester and ended up seeing Randy hug Vera for 3 rounds, hopefully he doesn’t screw over the fans in Abu Dhabi and the UAE like he screwed over us. When he says that he cares about the fans BJ only means his Hawaiian fans as his complaining over venues has shown a lot of disrespect to his fans from elsewhere.

I like BJ and he can be funny but he doesn't half act like a prick at times, he just gets away with it because he can back it up

He’s a legend of the sport and the best LW of all time but it rubs me the wrong way when he starts demanding specific fights or venues and the fact that he bashed a guy that he helped to train on TUF is pretty damn disrespectful.

from his quote i dont think bj is really bashing gray

i think he’s just saying that gray isn’t as big a name and wouldn’t be a super fight, and both are pretty much true. it doesn’t sound like he’s trying to imply that it’s a waste b/c gray doesn’t stand a chance (which he doesn’t lol).

by wandwagon on Dec 17, 2009 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

True

I just though it was a pretty classless thing to do, talking down on a guy that was supposed to be a training partner and friend of his at one point. BJ acted as if Gray was an unmarketable loser and whether we think that or not it’s still a bit of a dick thing to say. I don’t like it when fighters talk down on people that they’re supposed to be friends with, it’s a bitch move if you ask me.

I think it’s very important BJ gets another LW fight and soon. He wasn’t touched (well, eight times) against Sanchez, and he’s not getting any younger. It’d take him a long time to pack on weight to move up a division, so let’s give him the chance to clean out LW once and for all, and during 2010! No reason BJ’s next fight shouldn’t come before March.

by Ninkynonk on Dec 17, 2009 5:43 PM EST reply actions

Yeah GSP has Hardy and Silva by the sounds of it in the near future to worry about

And in the meantime BJ can defend his belt and maybe fight a top contender in the WW div. After that if BJ can beat a Alves then he has earned it. Until then if GSP is going to move up and face a top MW at least I would rather see that than another BJ fight.

I don’t think he deserves an immediate shot until he’s fought some contenders in the welterweight division like alves and fitch or even Kos.

Heres the article that includes his olympic thoughts and as well states he is walking around 195 and before including his first fight against BJ he was 185!! A BJ vs GSP 3 even sounds worse with GSP being 195?!

The Manchester crowd at UFC 105 got a chance to see welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at the Fight Club Q & A, prior to the weigh-ins yesterday.

“Rush” commented on everything from his successful title defenses against B.J. Penn, Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch, to a potential super fight against middleweight champion Anderson Silva or even Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields.

“My toughest fight I think was against either Jon Fitch or Thiago Alves. Jon Fitch because he was very well-rounded and was the type of guy who you can try to finish him as much as you want, but he’s always going to come back. And Alves because he was a huge, huge welterweight. This guy walks around at 215. And when I fought him, I was walking around at 185.”

Size and weight was a focus for a large part of the Q & A session.

Since his last title defense against Alves — where GSP injured his groin that forced him to sit out the remainder of 2009 — St. Pierre has hired a nutritionist as part of his effort to bulk up. The move hints that a super fight against middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva might be on the horizon.

Star-divide

“I’m not afraid of nobody in the sport. I think everything is a question of time … From what I’ve heard now Anderson Silva wants to fight heavyweight or light heavyweight. He’s getting bigger. I’m getting bigger too, but he’s getting bigger. But maybe one day. Depending on the UFC, depending on what the public wants … one day, if there’s a possibility for a catchweight or something like that happens, then I am up for it.”

Of course the effort to bulk up might just be the welterweight champion’s strategy to compete against a younger crop of heavier and heavier welterweights.

“I think it’s a question of two things. The first, size, the weight. That’s physics … It’s proven that somebody with more weight behind the punch normally hits harder than someone who’s smaller. That’s physics. And of course the skill too. I do believe that skill always beats strength and always beats size. That’s a fact. I proved it in my last fight. I was smaller than my opponent and I did very well.”

St.Pierre says he used to walk around at between 185 – 187 even as recently as his last title defense, but today weighs 196. He says there is a limit, of course, to how much muscle mass he can put on, because he still has to be able to make the cut to 170 lbs. at weigh-ins.

While St. Pierre has been on the sidelines while the welterweight division figures out its next number contender, he hasn’t stopped training. He’s identifying areas he can continue to improve.

“There is no such thing as an invincible man. Everybody can lose, everybody is beaten, everybody can be beat.”

One area he admits he could improve is his Brazilian jiu-jitsu and admits he’d like the opportunity to test his skills against Jake Shields, although he thinks the Strikeforce middleweight champion’s jitz might be on another level. When asked if his jiu-jitsu is better than Shields, St. Pierre held nothing back.

“I don’t think so, and I’m total honest. If you put me in a grappling match with Jake Shields on the ground, he would probably beat me. If you put me in a mixed martial arts fight against Jake Shields, I’m confident that I might beat him. But there is only one way to find out.”

Prior to the UFC 105 weigh-ins, St. Pierre also told reporters that he’s eyeing a potential shot to join the Canadian Olympic wrestling team for the 2012 Summer Games, as reported by Slam! Sports.

“It’s something in my mind, but the thing is I’m on contract with the UFC … So I have to be very careful in what I’m saying, but we’ll see.”

UFC president Dana White, though, expressed his support for St. Pierre’s Olympic goals, saying, “It would be great if he won a medal.” White’s a master marketer for a reason — an Olympic wrestling medal for one of the faces of MMA only adds legitimacy on a global scale for the sport that’s not yet “mainstream.”

Still, St. Pierre, who routinely trains at the Montreal Wrestling Club against some of his country’s top amateurs, is realistic about his chances.

“There is a big difference between saying I want to go to the Olympic Games and actually going to the Olympic Games … It’s very hard. To do the tryouts and everything it’s very hard. You have to pass through a bunch of obstacles before you get there.” If he does make the team, St. Pierre plans to compete in the 84-kilogram class.

yup . . .

Hughes 3 should be at Aloha for sure, fuckin no brainer. GSP 3 either shouldnt happen at all OR not for at least 2 more years while BJ makes his adjustment CORRECTLY to WLWT any other way is retarded (this is coming from a guy that wants both of these fights pretty bad) a rematch with Renzo or Serra would be nice at 170 if Renzo or Serra want to persue it. Fitch, Alves, Kos or Thiago would be top tear right now at 170 so one or more fights with them are eventual obvious choices to be a number 1er in the weight class. As for his next fight, i say Penn/Griffin most likely after Guida was stopped. Penn can use this fight as his transission to 170 as he should continue to put on weight aggressively to easily overcome his last contender at 155 and not yet relinquish the 155 strap but fight Hughes3 to test the waters at 170 an reenter the weight class with some authority if nothing else, at Aloha late 2010. Things go well, ditch the 155 strap for a commitment to 170, Kos/Fitch/Alves/Thiago next. gsp if he earns it with W’s, if he loses the 3rd with george and george isnt moving moving up to 185 by then, bj should move back down to an evolved 155 class if his body can still make the weight.

I think you have to forget about Hughes though. He isn’t in BJ’s league. I am a BJ hater. I am not interested in BJ/Hughes 3. Let Hughes rot for being so choosy. BJ/Alves after BJ fights someone like Carlos Condit. Or hell, let him fight Maynard(not Griffin) first to close up that division, and when Shields signs with the UFC, welcome him in with BJ at WW. 2 wins over top 6 competition at WW, then lets see him and GSP again.

i think bj/shields would be good

from the p.o.v that bj would demolish him. jake jits would be nullifyied by bj’s tdd and bjj skills. they’ve trained together so i dont think jake would request that fight. bj hits hard and fast. i think it would look like the diego fight with less punches by shields. bj would see his shots from a mile away. bj vs serra? that would be fun but again i think bj would smash him. koscheck or alves would be the proper test for him. gsp= kos+alves. alves has the size and kos has the wrestling..gsp’s main strengths. honestly i just want bj to move up because he will not lose to anyone at 155 and there is alot of good fights up there at ww. and while i’m on a little xmas wish list i would like to see a ufc grappling tourney. that would be soo ewwww! imagine hazlett vs bj? maia vs mir..

It's unfair on the other LW and WW contenders

Both belts were put on hold for the sake of a superfight that ended up being a massacre. No need to do the same thing in 2010. If BJ is serious then he should face a top WW contender, you can’t just walk into title fights because you’re the champion in another weight, especially when you’ve already lost to the champion twice.

I dont have any problem with either belt “being on hold”. Mainly because I don’t believe anyone would truly challenge either Bj or Gsp in their divisions. In LW, I don’t think Maynard or Edgar would beat Diego or Florian. And in WW, I don’t think anyone comes close to Fitch or Alves.
