Moving forward: Shogun Rua to start training in January for second battle with Lyoto Machida

Quoteworthy:

“I no longer think [about UFC 104] and can’t live from it anymore. I must only think on the next fight that’s going to be a battle. I was glad with my performance but not with the outcome. I wanted the win but this is past for me. Actually I don’t know what criteria was taken in account for that fight. I just know they (judges) used it in favor of Lyoto. [Machida] is a tough guy and I already expected a complicated fight against him. In fact, he has been fighting for over ten years, so that, I think it’s difficult for him to change something now. He has done what he does well along his whole life, so as it’s also hard for me to change my game.”

Almost two months after his unanimous decision loss to Lyoto Machida at UFC 104, Mauricio Rua says he overcame the controversial outcome and is focused on their second encounter in 2010. "Shogun" intends to map out the campaign for the next fight starting in January, when he will sit down with his team to plan all the arrangements. Will history repeat itself? Or will Rua get the win many feel he should have gotten back in October?

Fight of the year!

I’m looking forward for this fight in 2010 more than any other announced fight so far! Both men will go for the kill so I expect fist flying and a blood bath.

by MMACHAMP on Dec 17, 2009 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know

I really don’t think Machida will be fighting for the kill, I think he makes some slight adjustments but is still a counter fighter. It would also be a bad idea from Shogun just to rush in on Machida’s style as well. The fight could end up being the exact some just with a touch more urgency from both fighters.

I agree Edge

Neither of these guys is going to change much. Machida is and always will be Machida. I could see Shogun giving a little more effort though. I would have to pick Shogun in this one. Even though I picked Machida in the first one.

Not only for one day anymore Sarah. LOL

Jay, go take a look at the vid that I posted...Shogun vs Wand

I think that shogun still got a few new tricks in his sleeves.

it's in the fanshots

That sucks b/c he’s sparring with Wand and man he looked good(no homo, lol, the boxing form). Great head mouvements, he stays in the pocket and fired great combos and his TD were very well set up too. He even did a few head kicks like before his knees injuries. Great video!

Watch him spar with Dos Santos

He def teaches JDS a few things that’s a great vid too

that would be a first..

but i am still hoping machida has an answer for the last fight…if shogun goes in for the kill it might end it for him..edge and jay are right..machida will stick to his style of letting other people be the aggressor..sad but true.

War shogun!!!

Here the thing am a big Shogun fan but am worried for him in this fight. He says he’s not going to chance alot of his gameplan my only worry is Lyoto is. And with a second defeat to the hands of the Dragon would leave him 2 and 3 in the ufc with alot of his credit takin away cause of people saying he won against a over the hill Chuck and a gas out Coleman. So for the sake of me not needing to here all the idiots again. Win and Win Good !!!

Best rematch since Penn/GSP

This will be a great fight, just like the first one. That first fight was one of my favorite all time to watch, because it reminded me of the early UFC days when guys were very good at a specific style. That 1st fight was the best MMA Karate vs arguably the best MMA Muy Thai, and it was fascinating to watch.
BTW: The first time I watched it I scored it 48-47 Shogun. I have watched it 3 times since, and scored it 48-47 Machida all 3 times. To close really to get upset about the decision IMO, thats why we get to see a rematch.

BTW

I don’t have a clue who I think will win, although I do think the finish will be more definitive. Big fans of both

Punched in the face

Shogun must have forgotten that he got punched every time that turned his hips and kicked… WAR Machida…

by thony_cycle on Dec 17, 2009 11:40 AM EST reply actions

Thats why his face was as jacked up as Machidas ribs / legs after the fight....

Oh, wait a minute…..!

Styles and gamplans only change slightly in this one. I can however see Rua looking for the kill in rounds 3, 4 and 5.

It’ll be interesting to see how Machida deals with the mental aspect of the last match as unlike Rua, he’s never lost yet and he’s been pretty much untouchable…

the first fight he should have won, this fight he will.

Good good

I just want Machida to rush to the center of the cage and do a super combo and finish it in seconds lol , but I know he’s just going to be even more careful the second time around .

by Lestat. on Dec 17, 2009 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

blah this is tough but

I took magicida first time around, and I’m sticking with him this time as well.

by daniel worby on Dec 17, 2009 12:19 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Prediction.

First round will be the same as each tries to end it early. Neither will be able to just as before. Second round, they will both try to take it to the ground. The man who is successful wins.

Get over it.

This should be a great fight

I think that Machida will be too much for Shogun this time, he got away with a poor performance and will come back a much better fighter. If Shogun gets carried away looking for the finish this time then Lyoto will counterpunch him and KO him. Should be a great fight either way and I hope that this one has a clearer ending with no controversy.

Machida stunned him

many times- Rua was effective but he was closer to being finished than Machida. Don’t forget the Dragon trains with Anderson Silva whos great at catching kicks. I know Machida is going to catch that kick and punch him on his ass. From that point I see Rua eventually getting back up and then will get picked apart. That’s how he beats Rua.

by kibbled_bits on Dec 17, 2009 2:16 PM EST reply actions

Shogun

he will show up to this fight and know he has the tools to win and I think he will put it all together this time and comeout with a TKO victory in round 3 he wont and cant let it go to 4 and 5 like he did last time because thats where machida did the most damage!
