Shane Carwin: YES! I would fight 'The Legend' Frank Mir

Shane-carwin_lwwcu_medium

Props: Shane-Carwin.com

Quoteworthy:

"The main question I am getting is would I fight Frank? The answer is easy YES. I am not a fighter who decides who he fights, I fight who I am told to fight. I like it that way, I am not trying to build a legacy I am trying to fight the best fighters in the World and determine where I fit in. Mir is a multiple time Champion, who has been counted out more than Mike Tyson to only find himself right back at the top. He is a LEGEND of the sport and I would be honored to fight him."

Number one heavyweight contender Shane Carwin is back in training for whoever the UFC matches him up against in Spring 2010. "The Engineer" was surprised by Frank Mir's striking presentation versus Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 on Dec. 12 and states he is open to fighting the former champion. In fact, it's a bout that makes perfect sense while division champion Brock Lesnar recuperates from his long-term illness. Any Maniacs out there NOT wanting to see this fight?

Yeah why not.... it would be a good show

But i’d sooner see either fight lesnar first if he heals in good time

Took risks betting on the dogs @ 107 - Thank god for Hendricks, Wiman, Palhares and good'ol reliable Jon Fitch UD! Could have been a lot worse.

I say put it in for the Feb card

Randy vs Coleman as the main event is disgusting….we just had Randy vs Vera for free!! Now we get Coleman who can’t even walk as a main event!!

Mir took no punishment with Kongo

give him 2 weeks off, and 5 weeks on for the fight, yes not that long but it’s not out of the question

by Robert(1) on Dec 15, 2009 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

WHAT!?!?!?!

Jay, apparently you are unaware of Coleman’s Academy nominated skills in playing possum. He sells it so hard that he is still pretending to be gassed 20 minutes after the fight is over backstage doing post fight interviews. Get with it man j/k lol

by Edgecrusher71 on Dec 15, 2009 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

Edgecrusher knows what's up

Coleman is obviously trying to slip under the LHW radar until it’s time for that title shot. But for this fight Couture has nothing on him. LNP>Wall and Stall (god bless whoever came up with that). Add in Baroni + Kev cornering with brilliant strategies such as “Do SOMETHING!!!,” i just don’t see where he loses this.

Good idea

This fight should replace Couture-Coleman as a main event or be added to the horrendous 108 card. It’s guaranteed to be an exciting fight and after Carwin and Mir’s high profile rivalry with Brock it’s a fight that makes a lot of sense both ranking and market wise.

but the Feb card is superbowl weekend and is usually a big money maker….right now the card is very very weak

by Robert(1) on Dec 15, 2009 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

Lots of events are weak now

Since they are churning them out like day old doughnuts. I can’t think of too many fights that I really want to see other than a GSP-Silva tangle, Hendo-Silva rematch, Silva-Marquardt, Machida-Rua rematch, a Mir-Lesnar rematch, and Edgar-Penn. I can’t stand to watch another Couture match, and I have no interest in watching Ortiz, Slice, Vera, Coleman, Bisping, or Liddell ever fight again. Sure they were pioneers, but you need to know when you have to retire.

Carwin matches well against any heavyweight fighter. If Lesnar gets too long to get over, a fight with Frank Mir would be one of the best shows of 2010. I appreciate Carwin as an athlete and person. He always has good answers and I think this guy will be a real threat for Lesnar and other contenders.

At first Frank was being disrespectful to Brock and the sport, which is the greatest sport in the world. Then Brock was being disrespectful to Frank, the sport and the fans, who are the greatest fans in the world. And now Frank has gotten a lot bigger and even more disrespectful, but I’m still really big like always but I love the fans, who are the greatest fans in the world. So I guess what I’m saying is that Frank can’t disrespect the greatest sport in the world and the greatest fans in the world and get away with it, not on my watch. Barney to the rescue!

mir is a tool

everyone has bad times and good times, and no doubt brock will come back and say that he had a near death experience, but brock is what he is, and you don’t need to paint over the cracks. mir on the other hand is even worse than brock was in there second fight, because mir is a complete tool, and a wind up merchant that gets under peoples skin, and when he wins he is justified, but when he loses his opponent is a bad sport, wtf does he expect!!! and as for a legend of the sport, i believe you all know my opinion of that comment. and as mr frank is reading this, i can see his head growing larger and that stupid beard getting more pubic, jesus christ, i would swear he had my balls on his chin, but i keep my testicles in better shape than he keeps his chin and that stupid beard

he’s not that good of a fighter, his love for muscling subs (which i simply hate from a technical standpoint like stand and bangers. Also his ridiculously biased commenting.

Whoops to you guys hey? Not my fault Frank’s getting better and you guys all hate him. Your blame should be in Kongo’s direction, or your own. Maybe, don’t bet money on Kongo.

I'm as anti-Kongo as I'm anti-Mir

So it was funny seeing that idiot get clowned, I said all along that as long as one of them got smashed then I’d be happy. Now the talk of Kongo being the best HW striker is over thankfully and he can go back to obscurity until he learns some grappling skills.

Mir will get his comeuppance against any of the elite HWs, Carwin will KO him if they do end up fighting.

And I still admit that I hate them both. Mir looked good and I expected his shit talk to backfire which it didn’t but I still dislike him and Kongo. Neither of them will beat any top HWs.

Mir is already a top HW

kongo is a decent fighter who had a great battle with cain and we will get to see how Cain does against NOG. As far as Mir goes he has tools to finish the fight standing or on the ground a top five HW fighter. Carwin has the tools and we will see if he deserves to be with the best it appears. A dangerous fighter for anyone to face.

by Puck Head on Dec 15, 2009 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

Cain smashed Kongo on the ground, other than the early punches where Cain got caught because of sloppy defence that whole fight was a massacre in his favour.

Mir isn’t that good, for a legend and a former champion he doesn’t have many high profile wins and his biggest 2 are both questionable, as beating a rookie after a shit stand-up and beating a genuine legend who close to his best don’t make him a world class fighter.

Brock has had 5 fights

Nobody would consider him a legend yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if his career is over anyway. Mir is a legend in his own mind, that’s it.

Whilst Wandi and Hendo have made careers out of fighting and beating the best at multiple weights, Frank has made a career out of being a shit talker with overrated skills. His performances against Freeman and Lesnar were far from legendary, nevermind those after his accident.

Let's say Brock does not come back

What brock has done in such a short time and the fear and respect as a fighter he from his peers even those who hate him is amazing and could still end up in the UFC hall of fame but for only having five fights your right you can’t be called a legend with only five fights.

David I respect you

as a blogger and a person, but you are not seeing the whole picture here mate. Frank Mir was the UFC champion in his early 20’s, no easy task. He broke Big Timmy’s arm when Tim was actually in shape! He then has a life threatening and career ending (thats what doctors told him) motor cycle accident. Did he come back 100% right away? No. But he did come back to overcome adversity and over the following years he took some really tough losses (losses that likely would have never happened, had he not been laid up for a year and half, unable to work out, hooked on meds). Did he quit there when everyone wrote him off? No. The man comes back, trains his ass off, completely transforms his body, and WINS another UFC title (Interim, but whatever, he stopped Nog, sick or not. You think that was the first time Nog ever fought sick or hurt? pppffffff) My point is that Frank Mir’s story is very inspiring, and if you dont get caught up on his personality, it would be hard to argue that Mir is a Legend of MMA. Any way what did Randy ever do that Frank didn’t do?

Gotta go with J-Lau there

The grappling is there. Yes Stout offers a lot standing but wrestling wise, he’s your standard sprawl and brawler from ‘05. That doesn’t fly anymore today if you’re not fighting Matt Wiman or Spencer fisher. Though he will probly be game enough not to be subbed, he probly loses a decision.

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Dec 15, 2009 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

I can agree with that. That’s what I was expecting too…a decision for J-Lau or a TKO for Stout in the 3rd rnd. I’m still perplex about the long lay off and how he’ll do with his gas tank because he’s only got back in training since about 3 months, so….?

Having a sob story doesn't make you a legend

Frank Mir isn’t that good, he won a belt in the UFC’s worst division without beating any of the top guys other than Sylvia and had a loss to Ian Freeman of all people before then. He then had an accident (I don’t know why a fighter would ride around on a motorbike, bit of a pointless risk if you ask me) and came back in horrendous shape and was on the way out, became a big name again by getting a gift of a win over a rookie in Lesnar who came close to KO’g him then beat a sick Nog and got smashed by Brock all over again. Then he beat a crap fighter in Kongo (trust me I was calling Kongo crap for a long time, this isn’t just because he lost to Mir) and suddenly he’s a legend. Give me a break, to be a legend you have to dominate your weight class and make a big impact on the sport.

A heartbreak story is not enough to make you a legend, all fighters have tough times, Andy got blackballed from Pride and almost packed in the sport but he went on to truly dominate MMA and become a world class champion. He became a legend through his accomplishments not his story and Mir has to do the same.

If Mir can beat Brock and Nog again as well as Cain, Carwin, JDS and even Fedor then he’ll be a legend, however I doubt that he’ll beat any of them. Until that day comes, he’ll always be the cocky punk who makes excuses for his faults and got further with his mouth than his skills, not a legend.

Randy's fought at multiple weight classes and become a champion in 2

He’s made a career out of fighting the best and has helped the sport to grow. Mir hasn’t done any of these things, talking shit a lot and having a sob story doesn’t make him a legend.

Poor Mir broke his leg oh boo hoo

Both had serious injuries that were very difficult to come back from, both looked horrible at first and both are now back to their best.

Shogun tore his ACL and needed it reconstructed twice, that is no laughing matter and ligament damage can be career ending. Just becuase it doesn’t sound as gruesome as breaking your leg doesn’t make it any less serious. You can’t respect Mir’s come back and laugh at Shogun’s without coming across as a hypocite, both did well to recover the difference is that Shogun talks a lot less about his knee surgeries than Mir talks about his leg.

I'm just shite at using quotes

My point is, I said that I respect both of them for recovering from serious injuries, I’m just sick of Mir using it as an excuse all of the time when you don’t hear Shogun coming up with the same excuses, sure his fans do but Shogun himself doesn’t. You can’t dismiss the seriousness of either injury and that is something that you did with your “boo hoo Shogun” post not me. Besides I’m not even a big Shogun fan, I just found someone who went through the same problems as Mir and you ignored it.

Mir/Shogun

Mir comes back from a career ending accident and is deemed a pile of trash. No matter what he’s accomplishing.

Shogun does it, loses, beats Chuck and Coleman, and he’s deemed best in the world and slated to take the belt from Machida (keep in mind I’m using this example as before fighting Dragon). His resume til fighting Machida from his debut in UFC wasn’t looking spectacular, but people took his side and believed.

Mir can do the same. The odds are stacked against him. But, that happens. Lesnar is huge, and isn’t shitty. But I don’t feel Mir is shitty either.

Brock will be out forever

Brock will not be ready to fight for another 18 months. Hell overeem will defend the title before Brock can come back. Take the belt, the real belt and let the nog/cain winner and the carwin/mir winner fight for it. If Dos Santos wins his fight let him have the next title shot. By the time all that plays out Fedor will be in the UFC. Then when Brock comes back he can fight Fedor or whoever is the champ. Also a couples match with Sable vs Jenna would sell.

by hatteras on Dec 15, 2009 3:13 PM EST reply actions

Good "filler" match up

This is a good filler match-up for the time being until Brock recovers, and really it’s the only fight for either that makes sense given the time frame. Nog/Cain fight @ 110 & JDS/Yvel @ 108. With no real time-table for Brock’s return this makes sense. Both fighters have average fights lasting less than a round. These are the two biggest Brock haters. And there is a chance I could see Mir decapitated, which is always good. Winner gets Brock if he can return in July. If not, winner fights Nog/Cain winner for interem belt. Makes sense to me

by domino effect on Dec 15, 2009 3:14 PM EST reply actions

Agreed, Dana needs to do an Interim HW title

It’s already set up with Cain/Nog at 110, Carwin/Mir can headline the April or May card, and then the winners of those 2 fights can meet for the Interim HW title. No reason for the title to be in limbo while Brock is out. Dana did an Interim title when Randy had has dispute, and he needs to do it again.

Shane carwin vs Mir

I agree that Mir is becoming extremely cocky. But I think he does it to promote fights and provoke his competitors, its an age old tactic. I think this will be a great fight, Mir is very technical but carwin is immensely strong. I really believe carwin needs to quit his day job though if hes going to continue to fight at elite championship level. A full time engineer, family man and UFC top heavyweight? Come on. My prediction is on Carwin winning though.

Carwin does need to quit his job, you can’t be a champion and a part-time fighter. Even Grim is no longer working part-time, you have to dedicate yourself to training and competing 100% if you’re going to be the best otherwise you’re limiting your potential.

Add Andy, BJ and GSP (they've done enough already to earn legendary status)

And you have a sick list of legends. I’d also add Randy, Tito and Hughes to that list because of their past accomplishments and you could make a case for Frank Shamrock and Sakaraba but I agree that the term is overused. Only those who truly dominated the sport and changed the way that it was looked at by the mainstream or the style in which it was competed deserve that accolade. Frank Mir is nowhere near being a legend.

It’s hard to express sarcasm over the Internet.

Sakaraba x3, drew with Cro Cop, smashed Rampage twice in his prime

Wandi was a world champion for 5 years and competed in OW grand prixs, facing HWs when he was the size of a MW. He has done a lot more in his career than Frank Mir, who hasn’t had a single succesful title defence and has never been in the top 2 HWs of the world.

LOL NOG was not a legend at the time as far as being in his Prime I think NOG is better now

and better all around fighter than when he was in pride. But what ever you want to believe I guess doesn’t change the fact Fedor won by decision and in one looked in pretty bad shape and Mir finished him? Huge men Hong man and Bob Sapp LOL they are losing to middle weight fighters now days huge yeah talented no. C

by Puck Head on Dec 15, 2009 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Big Nog was a much better fighter in Pride

The Big Nog from Pride would smash Mir. And Fedor has done a hell of a lot more than Mir has, he’s a much smaller man yet has dominated the HW division whether they’re top fighters like Nog, Cro Cop or AA or even huge giants or quality LHWs (closer to Fedor’s size anyway) he’s beaten them all, Mir hasn’t done anythign to warrant any sort of comparison. He wouldn’t last a round with Fedor.

Lol

I like how every fighter from pride was magically better in pride and there pride versions would smash every fighter they fight in the ufc. Oh hes not in his prime anymore there pride version would kill him blah blah blah, that excuse is getting really old, how many fighters is that now lets see wandy, cro cop, big nog, how many more are you guys gonna add to the list.

So all 3 of them were in there prime but as soon as pride was over all 3 of them were out of there prime as soon as they fought in the ufc.

by mma guru on Dec 15, 2009 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

Rampage and Andy became better fighters in the UFC

The Andy from Pride isn’t half of the fighter that we see today while Rampage went on to bigger and better things in the UFC, he was a beast in Pride but was never the best in his weight class and has gone on to become a much better boxer in the UFC.

If you watch Big Nog, Cro Cop and Wandi in Pride and in the UFC you’ll see how much better those 3 were in Pride, all 3 had better chins, punching power, speed and agility, nowdays they’ve gone through too many battles and aren’t the monsters that they once were. Partly due to the rules changes and partly due to their age they are not the same guys that dominated their divisions in Pride. Like Tito, Chuck and Randy their time has past and only Big Nog has a shot at becoming a champion again. I’m by no means a blind Pride fan but I can appreciate how good these fighters were back in their prime with the Pride rules and they are clearly not as good as they once were. Name one way in which any of the fighters that I have mentioned have improved since the Pride buyout.

TRue

Very true. Big NOg in Pride was nothing short of a legend and still is. The only reason why pin heads over look him is because he happened to be in a promotion with the best fighter to ever live as of yet. Its like playing in a league with Michael Jordan and coming up short every time. Also like Tom Brady and Peyton both are great but one just happens to win more.

Are you ok? You having a fit?

There are plenty of people who were as good as Wand. Shogun for example only had one loss in pride and the only reason he didn’t kick Wands ass and take the belt was that they were training partners. Shogun would have won. Dan Henderson is Also just as badass as Wand.

by JRE on Dec 15, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

Wrong

Chuck is the greatest lhw so far, chuck beat everyone during his time besides rampage, chuck beat tito twice, tito beat wandy, chuck beat vitor, vitor destroyed wandy. chuck beat sobral twice, beat overeem, beat randy twice, he knocked out everyone he beat besides vitor. Also chuck beat wandy when they fought and won every round.

by mma guru on Dec 15, 2009 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

yur a bigger dumb ass then i thought!

How hw’s has chuck fought? 0!! Chuck’s #2 lw.
Wand wud have destroyed any1 that chuck faced in the UFC! Dan Henderson,RAmpage 2x’s,CroCop ,Mark Hunt,Fujita Iron head! longest reigning champ in mma history dipshit! Thats y he’s the best of all time! Twice as many fights as chuck!

Wandy lost to hunt and cro cop, and hendo and rampage both avenged there losses by brutal ko's

He fought overeem and couture there both former and reigning hw champs and he knocked them both out cold. Wandy would have destroyed anyone chuck faced in the ufc huh, well chuck destroyed tito twice and tito beat wandy and vitor destroyed wandy without breaking a sweat and chuck beat him. Lol nice argument d locc.

Y DONT U TRY WATCHING FIGHTS

instead of looking them up dipshit! by mma guru on Dec 15, 2009 5:36 PM EST up reply actions

so ur reasoning for the greatest LHW of all time is wandi because he used to take on HWs? then maybe he shud be the greatest hw of all time since hes so good at beating their asses, according to u that is.

by pandaExpress on Dec 15, 2009 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

wandi lost to tito an vitor, chuck beat tito (twice) and vitor. dont get me wrong, i like wandi. hes an impressive fighter. during those 5 years he literally destroyed everyone. but as long as greatest lhws go, i think chuck is one above the axe murderer.

by pandaExpress on Dec 15, 2009 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

HOW DO U FIGURE

if Wand beat the shit out of rampage twice & rampage beat the shit out of chuck twice? Chuck came 2 pride & got his ass beat 2 prove he wasnt the man! Pride grand prix

by d*locc on Dec 15, 2009 7:15 PM EST up reply actions

even so, thats 2 – 1. plus its like ppl are considering chuck and wandi never fought. they did, and chuck won. and u cant argue that wandi lost cuz he was past his prime, because technically chuck was too. so it was a fair fight.

The Pride MW GP is my favourite MMA DVD set

2 superb shows and it proved how well co-promotion can work for the fans, some of those fights were classics. The GP would have been even better if Randy was able to compete and Arona never had to pull out. Wandi proved why he is the man in that tournament, whilst Chuck was getting beaten up by Over(pre)roids and smashed by Rampage Wandi was murdering Sakaraba and Rampage…again.

A prime Wandi in Pride was a different class even to Liddell, as great as Chuck was he was never able to beat other top strikers and got badly found out by Rampage as well as Randy in their first fight. I wish that we got to see Chuck and Wandi fight in their prime, their fight at 79 was probabaly my favourite ever MMA fight. Chuck may have won that fight but if they’d have fought in that GP then Wandi would have KO’d Chuck in my opinion.

Another great fight in the UFC HW division there is no doubt the HW division

is the best the UFC ever has seen with great up and coming talent, a legend and a great current day fighter(Mir). I don’t know if there ever has been a better HW division
in MMA period. yeah Fedor, barnett, NOG and Cro Cop that was killer but we never seen Barnett and Fedor fight right now the UFC has Brock(hope he gets healthy), Mir, Carwin, Cain and Santos even Yvel and kongo are decent fighters and young Struve! Thank you UFC the HW division is finally exciting and competitive

I dont understand all the hate on mir for the legend comment. Carwin said it. Sure, frank is cocky, but he never called himself a legend that im aware of. You guys crack me up!

Shane Carwin looked like he was rocked to death by Gonzoga and came out with a Brian Bowles type punch that connected n put him out. Nothing impressive and in my eyes was getting owned. I know for a fact Frank Mir has more skills then Carwin and the only thing shane has is that extra beastly size…THATS IT….does he stand a punchers chance and can knock out Mir…YES! Will it happen? I doubt it…I think Mir will come up with a great gameplan and sub him..no doubt. I like Mir

Carwin’s time without a fight is growing. I think he should fight Mir soon. I am a huge Carwin fan however I think Frank will dominate him in every area of the fight. WAR CARWIN!!!!

I hate Mir

Because he has a big mouth. BUT I think he is way more skilled than Carwin and should beat Carwin with ease. I dont even think Carwin will be able to touch him thats house bad Carwin’s striking is. Mir right now is working hard on technique and Carwin has no technique, his punches are powerful but extremely short. I got Mir by domination even though I hope Carwin call but something out.

Both Men will get smashed when/ if Brock comes back until then THE HW belt should be no problem for MIr to get. Lets see how much of a LEgEND he is!
