With the 72-second destruction of Cheick Kongo, Frank Mir -- along with Shane Carwin, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Cain Velasquez -- has emerged as the prime contender for Brock Lesnar's UFC Heavyweight title. While Lesnar recuperates from a prolonged bout with illness, an interim championship looms as a possibility in near future. The showdown between "Big Nog" and Velasquez has been scheduled for early 2010, thus making the heavyweight mega-fight between Mir and Carwin a possibility. Carwin, originally slated to face Lesnar for the title shot, has been sitting on the sideline. He has not fought since his victory over Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96 in March and needs to get back in action. Mir wants nothing but a rubber match against Lesnar, and considering the stylistic similarity between Lesnar and Carwin, Carwin should be more than an adequate test for him.

He can’t beat Lesnar, or win more than 10 seconds of two fights. So he wants to fight someone better? Back of the line Mir. Fight a healthy Nog, or try to revenge your losses to Vera or Pe De Pano. Hate Mir.

Mir is legit. Pe De Pano is no longer around, Vera is out of the division and a joke (you cant believe that at this point Vera would have a chance). And why push for a fight with a heathly Nog when You have already beat the crap out of him? Should Nog get a pass for getting knocked out because he was sick? The man is a professional and took the fight, so it was his responsibility to show up and be the best he can be. No excuses. He showed up to fight claiming to be 100% and got beat. Should Tito get a pass for losing when he fought hurt after telling the world he was ready to go? No, and Forrest should get credit for beating Ortiz and move on. none of this “oh well Tito said he was 100% but was really hurt so Forrest should have to fight him again” BS. Honestly Mir just talks complete crap, he constantly contradicts himself (one minute he’s bashing Brock for lifting weights, the next he’s doing the same thing in training) and comes across as a smug prick.
The Carwin fight makes a lot of sense as both guys are trying to talk their way to the title and they should both have to fight and beat a top contender before either should be considered for the next shot ahead of Cain, Big Nog and JDS. Carwin will KO Mir in the first round if it happens, he won’t be able to deal with Shane’s power and 265 or not without good wrestling you’re not going to have good takedowns. Look at how being big and not being able to wrestle has worked out for Bob Sapp.

Brock makes a full recovery AND can get himself back to where he was! He would’ve beat Carwin and even though I truly believe Frank has improved in a lot of areas, Brock would’ve smashed him again! I will also add that I think Mir will defeat Shane by submision in the 2nd! I do hope we get a chance to see them fight!

I actually enjoy hear Frank ramble on regarding his obsession with Lesnar. I hope the hate and insecurity consumes him cause I think it’s makes for amusing vieo segments. Let’s face it. Shane probably is better than Lesnar on some areas. Better submission grappling and prob a lil more power in the hands (or ass). I think Lesnar will need a major surgery and Zuffa will just do Mir/ Carwin for the real title as Lesnar is forced to become the Former HW champ.

obviously, it’s a less than desireable situation but how long should a champ stay champ if he doesn’t defend?? why not just make it a nice round figure that everyone can accept. 1 year. This possible upcoming surgery and rehab could drag on for nearly all of 2010. I dont know about you but I would like to see a 5 round HW fight sometime next year. If you establish yourself as the best fighter amongst all of those who are able to compete then you are the champ.

If this fight was to happen, and when Mir starts questioning Carwins record and experience then people might have a bit more right to hate on him( although most will be said to build up the fight). It’s funny how easy it is for Mir to stir the pot. He is one of the most valuable assets the UFC has at the moment. He’s already started selling a potential fight with Carwin, while still building hype (and thus securing a shot at the title for himself) for Mir – Lesnar III. This guy is arrogant, yes, but he is also very confident and knows exactly what he is doing. People love to hate Mir, and I think Mir loves that.

him and Carwin will be a wicked fight though and I think Mir will be able to back his mouth once again but Brock is whole other story and should be able to shut either one of these guys mouths. In this fight i would give Mir an edge for two reasons one he is faster than Carwin and should have no problem hitting Carwin and avoid Carwins wicked shots and two Carwin has not fought for sometime and is going to give an edge to Mir as far as ring rust goes.
Brock when he comes back is going to have the same issue but Brock has abilities and strengths that neither of these guys can come close to and even after a year off should be able to take either one but they both would have better chances than they normally would.
The winner of this fight will face the winner of the NOG and Cain fight for the chance to fight Lesnar! Sounds good to me Lesnar will be hungry and a well deserved #1 contender will be thrown into the cage against the most feared HW in the world. I don’t think any HW in the world can beat Lesnar but it sounds like he’s not going to be back until summer a year after his last fight and Carwin, Mir, Cain all have been improving and even NOG looks better than his Pride days were he realied almost solely on his JJ game against good opponents now looks like he has improved his stand up greatly and is continuing to do so to be able to compete with todays MMA HW fighters and of coarse there is Santos not waiting far behind.

First lets be realistic, brock is not a good MMA fighter and is nothing more then a HUGE beast with huge power. Mir showed that in their first fight. The second fight, Frank was too small and just coult not get that guy off him.
Frank keeps inderectly putting down Brock because he wants the rematch and will win and i would bet the house on that…He also wants to show that carwin and cain are not the best and therefor talks them up so he can get a fight with one of them, win and eliminate them from title contention…Shane carwin and cain are not good fighters…Best heavyweight is Nog and then comes mir.

Mir = 2-time HW champ. Randy = 3-time HW champ. Brock destroyed them both. Randy is at LHW now because of Brock. Herring hasn’t fought in 15 months because Brock absolutely fucking wrecked him.

My opinion out Mir will once again prove to so many fans that base their opinions on fights that happened three and four years ago when it’s so obvious the fighters now days are improving from three or four years ago when the best were Fedor, NOG and Barnett now I doubt any of them could handle the wrath of Brock and all would be great fights against Cain, Carwin or Mir. With how Mir has added weight and with much improved stand up he is the real deal and I beleive best chance of beating brock but we will soon find out “Mir”.

I believe Mir will have the best chance as little as it may be against Brock he may be able to get to 270-275ish and fight off Brock a little bit better but Brock even after a year off because of his training will be even more improved from their last fight and show Mir a few more tricks. Mir will never have the strength or speed Brock has and Brocks mentality is custom made for MMA.

I’ve not been impressed by Brock’s body humping, while effective it shows that he doesn’t think he can strike with most fighters. Mir can beat any top 10 guy in different ways. How many guys can you say that about? He’s fast for a big guy, he’s getting huge and he got great submissions PLUS everyone hates him? There’s not a better guy out there to cheer for right now.

kibbled it's not body humping its controling the opponent much like Barnett has done for how many years
just cause you don’t like his style does not mean it’s not effective. I for one love his style his strikes on the ground are brutally insane for such short throws that do more damage than almost anyones full mount strikes in the HW division.

trust me I get it, Brock definitely has the wrestling/size advantage. Plus at his weight if he gets on top of you it can really wear you out. Brock did a great job at keeping and holding a position and not allowing Mir to get up.
I think Mir had a flawed idea that he could submit him from bottom, I don’t think that’s happening again. Mir will have to beat him standing up AND stop takedowns from Brock (no easy task). That’s why I think Carwin would be a great tuneup for him.

As GSP uses it's more than just strength it's also about technique
And brock has great wrestling techneque that Mir will lose if he tries and grapple with Brock on the ground Mirs only chance on the ground now is getting up and keeping it standing but Brock before his illness has been training on his stand up and when I say brock is training it’s pretty much gauranteed he will be much improved the next Brock you see will be even better than the last and he’s already considered the #2 by most of the MMA world.

I used to love GSP, but now that he’s basically a GnP fighter he’s become boring too. Brock is great for MMA (like MIR) they’re both hated and loved. I’d say that GSP used his ground game & clinch to effectively neutralize BJ’s superior boxing.
If BJ can keep the fight standing then, he coul beat GSP next time. Likewise for Mir.

He packs a powerful punch but traditionally wrestlers have the hardest transition into elite striking.

When you have power you don’t need to be a great boxer you just need to be accurate and defend well and when striking your more likely to get taking down there is a reaason wrestlers have done so well in MMA and guys like Hendo who develop a effective strike will have multi attacks that their opponent will have trouble defending especially if they are worried about getting taken to the ground.

just cause Mir gained weight and may be close to Brocks size doesn’t give him the strength brock has and for sure Mir will lose a little bit of speed. Brock is made for MMA he’s a natural fighter and his is the most ferocious fighter in MMA today. His everyday training puts a normal MMA fight to shame. Brock is one of a kind and Mirs jealousy shows. Mir has been training hard for about a year now and Brock has been training even harder almost his entire life.

Mir can handle Brock on the feet. He has way more experience in stand up than Lesnar. The problem is that Mir has been indifferent as to where the fight takes place ie..i’ll knock him out on the feet or just sub him on the ground if he takes me down. Now he knows that he should keep the fight standing at least until Brock shows signs of fatigue.
If Mir stays ellusive and really fights the TD then he can wear Brock down.
That might all be moot as he will be fighting carwin 1st. Carwin is a better mach up cause Carwin wont even go for the TD unless things get really bad for him on the feet.
Mir can win this fight on the feet too but In all liklihood, carwin will eventualy connect and end Mir’s night.

If Carwin is unable to connect I give the advantage to Mir who I feel will be able to avoid Carwins strikes. so you’re giving the stand up edge to Mir which i think is justifiable We haven’t seen Carwin in action since March. He says he has turned the “corner” and is a lot more fluid now in his stand up. I suspect he has improved a lot. He also must have some pretty solid sub defense while in top position so I think i would take carwin at even money.

the prob with Mir is that when he fights the other big 4 contenders brock, carwin, cain and JDS, he will have the following problems. He’ll either have to win on his feet against ppl who can take a punch and punch back a lot harder than him or have to fight off his back. Those four guys will have a pretty high level of preparedness for Mir’s bottom game as already illustrated by Lesnar. I do think a Nog rematch is a fight Mir will win cause Nog doesn’t really have big power in the hands and Mir has good counters for him.

I don’t really like all of Mir’s smack talk but hear are few thoughts…actually facts…
1) MIR BEAT LESNER in their first fight. In 25 years the record books will show that Mir beat Brock in their first fight. There will be no asterik on the record books that says that the ref helped out Mir. (not a fact, my opinion: Mir beat him fair and square, the ref stopped a first time UFC fighter from hitting a guy in the back of the head, so what, Mir submitted Lesner after the fact)
2) MIR beat Big NOG. I’m a huge Nog fan but it wasn’t Mir’s fault that Nog was is bad shape for that fight. Was Mir supposed to go @ 60% because Nog wasn’t healthy…NO! If nog wasn’t prepared he should have pulled out of the fight like he did by postponing the Cain fight. Mir did his end, which was to go out and win the fight. He had no control over Nog’s condition.
3) Mir talking smack is putting him into the mix. That’s why he is doing it. Since when does a Kongo victory get you into title contention? It didn’t for Herring. It only got Cain a fight against….who was that guy again? See my point? By talking this much trash about Brock and Kongo he was positioned himself into the mix again. Mir was headed for the land of Joe Stevenson. At least his goal is to get a title fight out of it, not like Tito who just talks (and lies) to hype up a fight in order to make money…Tito has no REAL title aspirations anymore.

What technique did Brock use? He fell on top of Mir and his weight prevented Mir from getting up. He used his weight and strength. It’s not really a rip on Brock, that what he does, he exploits his size and weight… not exactly “martial arts”… actually the antithesis of martial arts. I guess exploiting one’s weight and strength is a “technique” of sorts but it’s based on his genetic size not on years of learning a true martial art.

3 weeks in and people(myself included) were still learning guard passes and sweeps as well as positioning. Subs don’t even start for months. There is more to Jui Jitsu than subs, a lot more. Brock probably learned a few positions and how to avoid chokes. The knee bar was probably over looked since it isn’t used that often in the UFC. Why am I even telling you all this stuff, surely you know it all.

I never said Brock should slow down or fight weaker. I am only pointing out that strength and size are the FULL scope of his “technique”. Fortunately for those of us who have a martial arts background know that size and strength will inevitably be overcome by technique. He is so beatable it is laughable.
Secondly, I know wrestling is a martial art. I knew it when I took third in my state (Virginia) wrestling tourney. Did any of you ever even compete in a state wrestling tourney?Didn’t think so. But since I have, I can tell you that Brock has only shown very little actual wrestling in his MMA career and lots of size and strength. And yes, I am saying that he won the majority of his NCAA match by using his size nobody in college was as big as he was…NOBODY. To bad it’s not sustainable staretegy that long in MMA.
As far as his MMA “career”…LOL…make me laugh. No cans? See fight number 1.
Fight #1: Min Soo Kim, 2-5 career record. Lol. No experience and no success. Also, 6’1", 242 lbs. (So you LIED when you said His first opponent was bigger than him).
Fight #2: Mir, 2-2 in his last four coming into the fight, smaller, and a former champion just to make Lesner look good. Except he LOST. He lost, he lost, he lost to Mir.
Fight # 3:Heath “Born to Lose” Herring, again 2-2 in his last four (I’m starting to detect a pattern with Brock’s opponents). Herring had lost to Jake O’Brien (who?) on the ground. and only got a split decision against Kongo on the ground. Is there a more hand picked opponent for someone like Brock? And Brock couldn’t even finish him?!?
Fight #4 Randy, 15 months off of fighting and is undersized with a history of leaving the division because of the size difference. Again, a tailor made opponent. Why this was a “title” fight I will never understand. Randy had vacated the title and an interim title had been awarded (Fact). The “returning champ” is then supposed to fight the interim champ upon returning, not a guy who just barely got by a gatekeeper and has only 3 fights. But the UFC wanted the WWE fans so they set it up.
Fight #5 Mir again. As a wrestler that is better than you I can say that Brock didn’t beat Mir with wrestling. He just fell on him and used his weight difference to keep it that way. While this is his only “legit” win, it doesn’t really show what Brock has to stop other fighters from beating him with a different game plan.
So boys, keep on missing the point, failing to argue the facts, and misunderstanding things. If Brock ever decides to fight again it will be proven that he was walked to the title and has only one unimpressive “legit” win when he gets his ass kicked by the next few fighters. But then you’ll have some excuse for that .

No problem Striker I'll teach you a thing or two about MMA.
Brock abilities are obvious to almost the whole world including any MMA fighter I have seen speak about him they all have stated he’s a ligit threat to anyone. Four fighters had claim to the belt NOG, Mir, Couture and Brock and out of those four Brock came away with the undisputed title. His wrestling technique and ability to take opponents down is obvious, his striking is just as good as Barnetts and has more power. Barnett has similar tools and is a better JJ fighter but Brock is a better and stronger grappler on the ground and good grapplers can avoid and take away JJ artist strengths as you should know. Brocks ability to control the othere fighters hips is a huge struggle but great grapplers like GSP, Barnett, Hughes…… have shown how effective controlling an oppoent on the ground can be.
He got a shot at Randy because his skills were plainly obvious at the time and I also believe Randy wanted to fight Brock sooner than later but did not expect Brock to improve so drastically over a short period. Brocks weaknesses mainly experience in understanding what his opponent is going to try to do to him were quickly closed and his ability to dictate were the fight takes place is what makes him and guy’s like GSP so good. And your last question about me lying about what?

1)I am in the same boat as Puck Head on the WWF thing. I watched it as a kid, I practically grew up on the garbage. I stopped watching when I was 14.
2)You seem like a very angry man. You don’t trust the guys who make the world rankings, so you make your own based on your vast knowledge of fighting. Where are your rankings so people will know who the real number 2 HW in the world is?
3)If you can’t spot talent that is your problem. When a guy has 5 fights in his life, where can you rank him? There wasn’t many legit HW fighters in the world a couple years ago(let alone the UFC). Should he have been ranked at the bottom with the Chris Tusherer’s of the world?

1)I watched wrestling 30 years ago. I think I’ve grown out of it now.
2)Brock doesn’t deserve number 2, fine, who does? Barnett is the only one with a legit claim to the number and he isn’t allowed to fight yet.
3)What is your top 10 if Brock isn’t even in it? I guarantee there are 7 fighters min. that don’t deserve to be ranked higher than Brock.
4)I’ve watched a couple of Brock’s wrestling videos. I don’t pretend to know the rules but, Brock did have to make weight like everyone else didn’t he? Are you upset about the weight limits in his category? If so, I’m not the guy to talk to. They didn’t make a special division just for him, so I assume he was following the rules like everyone else. It wasn’t a 85-90 KG. (plus Brock Lesnar) weight class was it? He had the same opportunity to gain weight to the max. like everyone else.
5)I beg to differ on the no MMA skill and picked opponents quote. There wasn’t anyone else to fight. Is this the only time you’ve seen a good fighter get put against a fighter with no real chance to win? Where were you all those years when Fedor was fighting MW’s? but his cardio is a big question mark. He’ll be able to give 100% effort for minutes (yes, MINUTES) without stopping, which makes his submission potential absolutely jaw-dropping.
But if he doesn’t have a gas tank, a reasonable striker just picks him apart on the outside.

But there is no doubt he a much better fighter than he ever has been. I give Mir credit for getting his life together. He has ability and talent there is no doubt about that and is determined to be the champion again even though I don’t think he has a great chance against Brock I believe he has a decent chance against Carwin. There are some great fights to come and Mir is with out a doubt in the UFC top four. Even though I have NOG ahead of him I believe between Carwin, Mir and NOG they are very close and fights that will be hard to pick I don’t think cain will make it past NOG but then again Cain is looking better every time he steps in the ring too. I’m excited to see all these fight again the UFC HW division went from crap to great.
