Frank Mir used 'The Pacquiao' to drop Cheick Kongo prior to submitting him at UFC 107

Props: UFC.com

Quoteworthy:

"I knew I had the capability of beating (Kongo) based on what I could do in sparring. It's just something I had to make sure crossed over. It's something we've been saying the whole training camp. We call it "The Pacquiao," because (Manny) will step off as a southpaw and throw the overhand left. As soon as I hit him I went to catch him with the uppercut and I didn't see him, he was on the ground. I charged him a little too aggressively, I should have passed and established the under hook. Instead he was able to rotate and get back to his knees for a takedown which could have been a major mistake on other opponents like Cain (Velasquez) or Shane Carwin. But instead he gave me his neck and I train with Robert Drysdale on a daily basis. If I get someone's neck in the heavyweight division, it's over with."

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir talks about his stunning submission win over Cheick Kongo in the co-main event of "Penn vs. Sanchez at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee, on Saturday, December 12. Mir dropped the hard-hitting Parisian early into the first round, quickly pouncing on his downed foe and choking him out via textbook guillotine. The win could push Mir into a fight against Shane Carwin while Brock Lesnar recuperates on the sidelines after stomach surgery. Anyone have a problem with him facing "The Engineer" -- or does another top flight heavyweight exist for the Las Vegas native to battle?

WHAT A PICKLE!!! 5 INTO 4 DOESNT GO!!

this has threw a spanner in the works now concerning the hw division.if kongo won he couldve been took out of the occasion due to his loss to cain.if brock is out for a while we have mir/carwin/dos santos/cain and big nog all vying for the interim title.how do u go a bout that?
personally i would have dos santos vs mir winner fight the winner of cain/big nog and then the winner fight carwin for thr interim title.it holds carwin up for a while but he was due to fight directly for the title anyway so he should get a pass imo.mir looked awesome, hes a cocky sob,but in that form could beat any of the above.exciting times in the hw division considering it was treadbare not so long ago!!

by scott1 on Dec 13, 2009 8:11 AM EST up reply actions

Or just swap dos santos for carwin in your matchup.

by Hardcase on Dec 13, 2009 8:21 AM EST up reply actions

good call

dos santos is young plus he trains with big nog so that could throw a spanner in the works!there we go sorted!!!

by scott1 on Dec 13, 2009 8:23 AM EST up reply actions

lol...

mir vs big nog 2 and JDS? this kid will be tested by yvel so dont count him in….it will be big nog for the title against carwin coz lesnar will not fight ever again…

by candyce (formerly known as gaara) on Dec 13, 2009 8:34 AM EST up reply actions

MISREAD!!

no leave jds out of the equatuin, have mir/carwin and big nog/cain the winners fight for the interim title, whats the lol mean im confused!!

by scott1 on Dec 13, 2009 8:46 AM EST up reply actions

HW Division

I’d have Nog/Valesquez vs Carwin for interim title… Mir vs JDS/Yvel for #1 contender… if and when Lesnar comes back, unify the title!

by PHISH NATION on Dec 13, 2009 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Gabe Gonzaga...

When he is on he is on…He is one of my faves even though his record is not that great. I think he could throw a huge monkey wrench in Mir’s game. He has good Muay Thai and I am pretty sure he is the more acomplished BJJ Black Belt. I like his chances against Frank Mir.

Mir Kills me because for a guy who gave so much shit to LEsnar for Trash talking and BS, he has taken on the same roll. He secretly wants to be Brock I think!!!! All the boxing lessons in the world is not going to get him past Brock and he still needs to rematch Big Nog and fight either, Carwin or Brown PRide to get into the Interim title run. He has endured 2 total beat downs at the hands of Lesnar. Mazzagatti saved him the first time and nothing saved him the second time. What makes him think the 3rd time will be a charm? I am not interested in seeing that fight unless Mir actually cleans out the division, personally.

I guess I was quick to judge

I was going to give Mir credit for his win, now that he “thinks” he knows what Cain or Shane would have been in trouble, he doesn’t deserve any credit. Mir can’t say how Cain or Shane would have reacted. Mir, do us all a favor and STFU douche.

re: I guess I was quick to judge

“… "thinks" he knows what Cain or Shane would have been in trouble…”

First of all, this doesn’t make any sense, but I think I get what you’re trying to say… Second, Mir didn’t say anything bat about Cain or Shane, he complemented them. Read Mir’s quote again, he said that if he made the same mistake against one of those two fighters, they would have capitalized on it….

by Scuds20 on Dec 13, 2009 4:06 AM EST up reply actions

yeah man that was just him knockin on kongo

he didnt even sound like a arrogant smug asshole in this

by GOLDIGGAH on Dec 13, 2009 4:10 AM EST up reply actions

plain and simple cain did not do to kongo what mir did and kongo had a full came i think cain would not stand a chance against mir he lacks punching power and jj skills

by killawiffa on Dec 13, 2009 4:15 AM EST up reply actions

thatd be good matchup

heavyweight is good division i hope brock gets well soon to get back in the mix!

re: I guess I was quick to judge

Mir is giving credit to Cain and Shane, saying that if he were to make that mistake vs. either of them, he would be in big trouble.

Next time read before you open your mouth, douche…

HOLY SHIT

I wish I would’ve said this in the other thread then it would seem almost prophetic. But I was going to say in other thread was that the way he hit Kongo Really reminded me of the Punch Pacquiao hit Ricky Hatton with.. Exact same set up, and btw, that was a really slick move by Mir, he fainted to get him moving that way then came with the overhand.. It wasn’t as simple as it first appeared it was actually very tactical.. I can say as a pretty hardcore boxing fan that I’m pretty impressed by the way that that punch landed.. Maybe Mir is actually a really good striker, I guess we don’t have a lot to judge on because Lesnar just takes him down and smashes him.

by BlaiseBlaise on Dec 13, 2009 3:52 AM EST reply actions

Thing your failing to realize here BlaiseBlaise, is that Kongo thought Mir was going to take him down.

LOL, there are no takedowns to think about in boxing, if Kongo would have been more confident in his ground game (which he couldn’t possibly be right now) he’d have blocked that punch.
Mir is a heavy puncher, and it was a smart move but it didn’t really prove anything other than his smartness which is a crucial factor in the fight game.

by RoBerto. on Dec 13, 2009 4:17 AM EST up reply actions

If Kongo thought Mir was shooting

then why was he standing straight up? Give Mir is due. He just steam rolled a very good HW striker. He is a lot better than the haters want to give him credit for. He has a pretty good attitude in victory as well. He will probably not beat Brock if Brock returns to form, but Mir is an entertaining top HW nonetheless.

by DH. on Dec 13, 2009 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

Roberto,

if any, what difference would that make?? He made a nice faint and stepped into an overhand, I don’t really care if he was fainting a punch or a takedown. It’s like, hey man did you see Mir fake that jab?? HE WASN"T FAKING A JAB HE WAS FAKING A LEFT HOOK. NO MAN, NO WAY HIS FAKE PUNCH WAS AN OVERHAND RIGHT! I mean seriously, are you stupid or something? He faked him out then hit him on the chin! end of story.

by BlaiseBlaise on Dec 13, 2009 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

Even as dumb as Kongo is, he has to know what everyone else here knows, which is that Mir’s takedowns are shit. He had no business fearing a Mir takedown. Mir just blasted him and choked him silly.

Good times and riches and son of a bitches
I've seen more than I can recall.

by P-Dub on Dec 13, 2009 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

difference is that it’s not like in real boxing, so the pacquiao sh!t goes away. He fainted low and came up high, great move. But he was talking like he’s a great American boxer vs European style boxers. It is what it is. Kongo being from Europe has nothing to do with his guard, it’s just that his arms and shoulders are so big that he has to keep em low to be able to relax.

by RoBerto. on Dec 13, 2009 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

Mir fooled me amd looks great

by Robert(1) on Dec 13, 2009 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

So, Mir shows us his "technicality" in striking by using "The Pacquiao"?

I doubt if that technique would have been put to good use against Lesnar.

probably not.

but it worked perfectly against a standup fighter like Kongo, kinda like how Randleman faked the shot and came up with a left hook dropping Cro Cop in the Pride HW GP 2004.
I’ve always been annoyed by the way Kongo carries his hands, it looks like his shoulders are too big for him to hold his guard up, same problem Marcus Jones has, just that he’s at a lower level of striking of course.

by RoBerto. on Dec 13, 2009 8:24 AM EST up reply actions

right on!

ur right syd…what mir has done to kongo is really nothing…that punch is slow but the bird brained that is kongo anticipating mir to take him down made the difference…reallyyyyyyyyyyyy overrated

Mir smashed Kongo

So much for all of those people that said that Kongo was a lock. I’ve never been impressed by either man and Kongo once again showed why he sucks, that being said Mir performed very well and I can’t criticise anything about that performance. He outclassed Kongo and should face Carwin next, that way both men can earn a fight with Brock (if he comes back) instead of talking their way into one.

Mir has tons of talent

but dont we just hate to see the shit talker win. I like it better when the bully or the guy talking the most gets owned, what can you do, Mir is no joke!!!!!

by HEELHOOK on Dec 13, 2009 1:18 PM EST reply actions

Anyone who thinks Mir is dumb, take a look at his jock for the fight (not homo). It looks like he stuffed a bullet proof vest down there. Very smart when fighting Kongo.

the ko was impressive....but i still don't think mir should mention the pacman when it comes to him fighting

i got to give mir credit though. he is probably the second or third best heavywieght besides brock. nog will have nothing for him if they rematch. i want to see mir v. carwin asap.

by Conan the Barbarian on Dec 13, 2009 9:18 PM EST reply actions

Mir is looking better every time he steps in the ring now at 265 he's a huge threat to anyone

including Brock. Mir at one point of his MMA was a chubby alcoholic with tons of potential that still had the ability to beat aome of the best in the business, now that he’s off the bottle and focused on MMA his potential is starting to show and there is no doubt has the ability to beat any MMA HW. If Brock comes back 100% and Mir gets past one otehr opponent at least and I’m hoping NOG we should see two of the greatest go at it unfortunately for Mir Brock is just too talented and gifted for any MMA HW to have much of a chance.
