im roooting for diego but if he wins does that make the “current #2 lightweight” aoki #1??
i sure hope not because hes really not that great of a fighter, as far as grappling goes, its another story..

Diego is kind of goofy

but the kid brings it. I really don’t care who wins. I just want to see these guys throw.

Winner of BJ-Diego is the #1 LW in my opinion

Aoki is very good but BJ is easily the best in the division and I’d say the best LW of all time, Gomi was superb in his day but wasn’t half protected by shady dealings, he should have lost the belt to Aurelio for one thing plus BJ and Nick Diaz both beat him. A win over BJ would be huge and would propel Diego to the top in my opinion, he was a top 5 WW and with a win over BJ would have beaten 3 of the UFC’s top 10 LWs including the greatest LW of all time and a p4p great in Penn. If Aoki can unify the Dream and Strikeforce LW titles then he’ll have a case for being the best LW in the world but right now I consider this fight to be for the title as well as ranking as best LW in the world today.

I dont know why I hate this guy

But he just sounds like such a little prick. His voice annoys me

I'm on the same boat but...

I really dislike Dirty Sanchez so i’ll be on BJ’s bandwagon for this fight (damn did I really just say that). Hopefully is a double KO!

by MMACHAMP on Nov 29, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

I'll also be rooting for the Nightmare

But I will always root against BJ, so my vote doesn’t really count. If I were to bet this fight I would definitely take BJ though.

gotta say..

sanchez has the best mental tools in MMA, does’nt lack any confidence, and hes was never really been hurt bad in any fight, he got layed on by fitch for 15 mins, he got punched like twice while staph infected during the dick head i mean koscheck match..

by guyverbob on Nov 28, 2009 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

hmmm..

i think diego, but man idk to be honest, diego has the mind set that that title is already his and that its his destiny, bj believes hes can beat anyone at anytime, i won’t say either guy is wrong i say its gonna b awsome..

by guyverbob on Nov 28, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

true..

i think so too, srry for all the posts its just i like breaking this stuff down..

by guyverbob on Nov 28, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Come on

No way is he underestimating the BJ Penn in the biggest fight of his life. He is just in the perfect mental state and believes he is the best in the division. What is wrong with that? No way does he think BJ Penn is not going to be the toughest fight of his life

by Gambling Pat on Nov 28, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

Great fight

I think Diego will be ready for BJ, but will he have enough? I have a hard time seeing BJ win this one by decision simply because Diego is crazy with cardio, so he will have to do what no one has ever done before, finish Diego Sanchez. I always give BJ an advantage in the stand up, but is that valid with Diego? The way he was striking with Guida made him look pretty dangerous, but who was the last guy Guida knocked out? One way or the other I think who ever delivers the big shot or cut early will control the fight and win.

by JRE on Nov 28, 2009 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

Should be interesting

I agree with JRE that you have to give the standup advantage to BJ. In addition you clearly have to give the advantage on the ground to BJ as well. But the great thing about this fight for Diego is that he doesn’t need those advantages to win. GSP has now written the book on how to beat BJ Penn (Matt Hughes would have a small chapter in that book too). To beat BJ Penn you have to come into the fight strong, explosive, and as a cardio maniac. You have to control the tempo, out wrestle and simply survive 2 rounds and you will be able to tire him out for a decision or late round stoppage. Luckily for Diego he has those characteristics and if he is smart he will be able to outlast BJ. Memo to Diego… stick with the winning formula!

by latestpanic on Nov 28, 2009 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

Clearly, nothing

Diego is a BJJ black belt under Ribeiro, who doesn’t give belts out like candy. He also has a strong wrestling background and is a top striker. To say BJ has a huge advantage anywhere is wrong. I think Diego uses his wrestling to put BJ on his ass and his superb top game to pound on him. I like Diego to take this one.

I'm kind of a big deal.

by P-Dub on Nov 28, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

i really dont get it

how many times does bj penn need to stuff a take down to show that he has the best sub defence in mma? i mean seriously, besides that there is just no one with the power to knock him out at 155, and diego has already shown that he doesnt have knockout power. now i know i may take some heat for this, but bj has arguably the best bjj in mma. dont be surprised if the fight goes to the ground and bj uses his handfeet en rout to a submission victory. 3rd round rnc.

to the death, georges.

by an8yr0ldboi on Nov 29, 2009 3:29 AM EST up reply actions

GSP and Hughes both whipped his ass by taking him down and pounding on him. Joe Daddy and T-Rex Sherk, both outstanding wrestlers, didn’t even try to take him down (Joe never even got the chance to try) because they were scared of his BJJ, and rightfully so. Diego won’t be. Diego is an excellent wreslter and very strong for a LW. I would not be at all surprised to see him put BJ on his back several times. And Diego goes for the finish from the top. He won’t be looking to LnP to a decision.

I'm kind of a big deal.

by P-Dub on Nov 29, 2009 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

Diego will take this one. His cardio is like night and day compared to BJ’s. His stand up and his jitz are just as good. His strong wrestling will be the difference in this fight. BJ can hop around on one foot all he likes, eventually he’s going down…and out, by GNP.

by mma_dad on Nov 29, 2009 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

Deigo VS BJ

Diego’s mental state is a big part of why hes getting this far. BJ’s mental state isn’t as committed, but he definintely has an edge in talent and ego… Diego doesn’t have the power in his hands to damage BJ, he can outscore BJ, but BJ can hunt him down and beat him up in the standup power area. This fight may be the 1st time Diego gets tko’d

by THORAZINE on Nov 28, 2009 11:19 PM EST up reply actions

Sanchez is so damn cool

man i feel excited for him just watching this video – BJ is a freak at 155 but hopefully sanchez can give him a gr8 fight!

by Randy for Couture on Nov 28, 2009 2:44 PM EST reply actions

Sanchez just really believes in himself, and at the highest level of competition, I would imagine that a fighter needs that type of mentality to be and stay at the top.

Same here, big fan of Diego but think bj will be too much for him, hoping for a competative fight anyway. The more I think of it the more I think the comment kev posted months ago could come true. Diego rushing out like a madman and bj catching him quick with the ko. Hope am wrong tho

Also a huge Sanchez fan

I’m also a huge Sanchez fan, and I also believe that Diego will win this fight……if he can weather the storm of the first 2 rounds. I do believe that BJ’s striking is superior, but if Diego can find his range before getting knocked silly, he has a huge advantage in the later rounds. What people fail to realize is that Diego has one of the best chin’s in MMA. Sanchez has NEVER been in trouble. He’s never even had his bell rung, and it’s not because he hasn’t been hit. He is a tough son-of-a-bitch, period….and you know he’s gonna bring it. I don’t know why he has so many haters, how can you not love the way this kid fights? I do believe a championship belt is his destiny.

by kg12 on Nov 29, 2009 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

Well I really liked Kongo, but...

Mir looks like he is coming in with the gameplan to get this to the ground and snap a limb. I thought Mir was falling in love with his striking and that was going to get him in trouble here. If Mir fights a smart fight and Kongo on the mat, Chiek will have no answer.

by Gambling Pat on Nov 28, 2009 3:17 PM EST reply actions

One hears all the smack talk and see Mir’s arrogance/cockiness, but he knows what he’s talking about. I don’t see Mir even really insulting Kongo by saying Kongo has the worst ground game in the UFC Heavyweight Division, it is just fact as shown by his lack of ground game in previous fights, but Mir still gives respect to Kongo about his striking and conditioning. Mir definitely has this fight if it gets to the ground.

by chrisbboy82 on Nov 28, 2009 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Diego's best strength

is his relentlessness, but against BJ can be his biggest down fall because of BJ’s striking power. Diego may be able to take other LW shots very well but he has not fought someone with BJ’s power and precision. BJ is with out a doubt the #1 LW in the world so for anyone to really have much of a chance is slim and Diego has as good of a chance as any.

Mir is going to destroy Kongo, he seem so much more focused and committed to improving his MMA. The old Mir would probally beat kongo the new Mir will destroy him just watch.

by BeaverRaider on Nov 28, 2009 3:26 PM EST reply actions

Mir's got to be a huge favorite in this one

The sad thing for Kongo in this fight is that his standup is useless because everyone now knows the formula on how to get an easy win over him. The recipe to beat Kongo is as follows, takedown, pound then submit. His next opponent simply has to rinse and repeat. He really should think about maybe moving to K-1. He’d be a big fish in that pond.

by latestpanic on Nov 28, 2009 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

I agreed with Kevin's post

from OldMania saying that Diego will bumrush him and get KO’d before round 3. I hope thats not the case and we have a very high paced scramble for 5 rounds. This will probably end up being Fight of the Year, I’m sooooo pumped for this fight.

As opposed to most guys, I really dont think Mir is a cocky ass cunt. This interview, I really enjoyed his breakdown and what he has to do to win. Go Mir.

by Synyster_08 on Nov 28, 2009 3:49 PM EST reply actions

BJ may underestimate the Nightmare

I’M a fan of both but if either fighter is going to underestimate the other I would be worried about BJ and his cocky peaking phase attitude. Granted with his resume I would be cocky to but he didn’t prepare well for gsp so I would worry about the same here not visa versa. Diego is simply confident. He is more mentally prepared for his fights then possibly any fighter out there. He digs deeper into his mind before each fight then anyone, and it seems to be working well so far. This could be the main event that Dana needs right now. I’m more pumped about this fight then anything since mir v lesnar 2. YES YES YES…

I can't wait

Bj should win this one but it should also be a war. This could be the best match up of the year. But when BJ runs him over. Who would he fight next?

by BJPennfan on Nov 28, 2009 5:18 PM EST reply actions

Exactly!!

I honestly dont see ANYONE in the UFC LW division who can beat Penn I being a HUGE Aoki fan;) I think Aoki is the only one who would have a shot to beat him…

But honestly when BJ comes with his mind right and decent cardio he is the best LW out there!! IMO

by N.Mamone on Nov 28, 2009 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

Penn would beat Aoki standing no argument there but Aoki has better BJJ then Penn and is very dangerous off his back which for a jits guy Penn struggles…

If Penn kept it standing I would give it to Penn but I believe with Aoki’s Black belt in Judo and BJJ he would get it to the ground then it would be over!! IMO

by N.Mamone on Nov 28, 2009 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

I am sorry but Aoki does not have better BJJ then BJ.

by bigislandboi808 on Nov 28, 2009 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

Aoki has way well rounded BJJ then Penn!!

Penn is a great MMA fighter but if it was a BJJ match Aoki would whoop BJ’s ass!! IMO Penn has nothing off of his back and may have a good rubber guard but he has never finished a fight with anything besides a RnC which he has mastered with the exception of a head arm triangle over Ludwig!!

Akiyama and Maia to WW!!

by N.Mamone on Nov 29, 2009 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yes that is because BJ is “most of the time” on top and therefore uses his BJJ to have an advantage to try and pass guard gain mount let his opponent give up the back and get the RNC. Just because you don’t see BJ doing anything off his back doesn’t mean he is not good at it.
And IMO if this was a straight BJJ match with gi or without BJ would beat Aoki. Not saying it would be easy but I think he would definetly win 8 to 9 times out of 10.

Because you are from the big island?? But BJ’s BJJ skills is not as great as you think!!

Not gonna go on about BJ cause I really dont care for him!! Because I know if Aoki beat him BJ would have all sorts of excuses then go on to claim Aoki cheated!!

BJ would win the stand up Aoki would win the ground game…period!! IMO

I honestly think Aoki is a great sub artist.....

but like guyverbob said he doesn’t have much else to offer. I can’t see him being able to have any chance of taking BJ down and would get destroyed standing. Even against Sanchez & Kflo I don’t think Aoki has much of a chance against. I know a lot of boards have him at number two but in the octagon and by todays standard MMA rules he would have a tough time cracking the UFC top five.

by BeaverRaider on Nov 28, 2009 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

A lot of the wrestlers would beat him too

Maynard, Edgar guys like that would probably smash him because the fight would never make it to the ground. Aoki is the most over rated fighter in MMA.

Really, I think that the only top LW in the UFC is Penn IMO top 5 that is…

If or when Penn beats Sanchez who else in the division would give Penn a good fight?? worth watching?? Griffin??he lost to Sherk,Maynard who stated he wouldnt want to fight Penn…I honestly think Aoki would be the only good fight for Penn if he beats Sanchez!!

Penn has heart

I have no love affair for Penn, he is a punk, but unless you are stronger then him I don’t think you have a chance. This boy’s Pineapple is unbreakable and unless you can control him on the ground or on the fence you are not going to out strike him. I would so enjoy a Sanchez victory but I am thinking the fight is Penn’s if he wants it.

Diego doesn’t have the power in his hands to handle BJ, BJ will have to come unmotivated or out of shape to lose… either one is a remote possibility though..
