Matt Brown looking for immortality against Renzo Gracie

He doesn’t like MMA and isn’t serious about a career in it, shame as he’s currently the top Gracie. I’m interested to see what Rolles is like but from what I’ve heard he’s just a watered down Roger.

As for the Gracies in general, back in the day they were the kings of MMA, their BJJ style helped create the sport we love. Rorion, Royce and Renzo in their primes were all superb fighters, though MMA has evolved and most of the Gracies are only relevant in the sport for nostalgic purposes. I’d be quite happy to see how they match up with younger, lesser known fighters if they are still serious about competing and not looking for a quick paycheque, but I don’t care to see them fight other legends like Hughes or Sakaraba, as it makes both legends look desperate for money and doesn’t help the legitimacy of the sport, it’d be like Tyson and Holyfield rematching next year. I also don’t want to see them walk into big fights because of their reputations, as that is unfair on the younger talent and it would just end in a lopsided beatdown like Hughes-Gracie.

Let’s see how many differences you can find.

Hughes needs to decide what’s more important, his ranking and reputation or his bank balance because right now he’s avoiding the top contenders and young up and comers, but accepting fights with people even older than him. Personally I find that worse than staying around too long and losing to lesser names, it devalues the legitimacy of the sport in my opinion.

I’m just going by what Hughes has said. He claims to want another title run, but he won’t fight the people he needs to fight to get there. Like I said, if he wants another couple fights against guys with names who aren’t necessarily a big threat to beat him so he can make some bank while he can and end his career on a win streak, he has earned that right. But based on what he’s said combined with the fights he’s refusing to take, it sounds like he thinks he should have it both ways — get a couple non-threatening names to beat up, then get rewarded with a title shot.
