Shogun Rua confirms Lyoto Machida rematch; Still waiting to sign for May 1 fight

Quoteworthy:

"I'm just going to start the preparation and let’s go there. The UFC has already confirmed with my manager that I will fight Lyoto again. It’s just missing to sign the contract but the verbal agreement is done. I still don’t think whether I will follow the same strategy rather than the formerly one. I’m going to sit down with the team to map it out. This rematch is much wished because it’s a title shot for the world championship. It’s my biggest interest. I’m sure worried to achieve my dream and the revenge comes on the second plan. I was choked for that loss against him, but Machida has no blame. The judges are the guilty who were the only three people in the world that understood he won the fight."

Shogun Rua reveals that UFC has confirmed his rematch against Lyoto Machida on May 1, 2010, which is expected to take place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It's more than six months from their original controversial encounter; however, "The Dragon" needs time to recover from surgery he underwent a couple of days after their first match. Shogun, meanwhile, plans to start his training camp as soon as possible. Advantage Shogun?

Shogun is the best!!!!

I hope he doesn’t feel that he has to be even more aggressive in this fight, because he doesn’t! He won the first fight 4-1, his legkicks were the best and most effective hits in the fight. Would hate to see him lose on being overly aggressive.

Looking forward to the rematch #1 in the world against #2 what ever order you want?

I’m kind of hoping for Rua to win so we might be able to see Anderson Silva fight Rua champion against champion. But I’m just glad to see a fight between two of the best fighters in the world and Lil Nog is another fighter that looks to be in the mix. F^cking brazilians are taking over the LHW with a T.Silva win they will have the top four spots and throwing Anderson in the ratings gives them the five best!

here comes heat for me..

well i know you guys are gonna get mad for what i hav to say but its my opinion and i’d rather speak my mind then just agree, shogun never really tried to even finish the fight, his whole intention was to out point machida, and when you depend on the judges and it backfires it kinda serves him right, and what i find disrespectful is how hes saying he won the fight and the judges were wrong, the fight was close and both guys were doing a different straegy so it just depends what you look for in a fight, he does’nt have the right to say he won and everyone who dissagrees is wrong..

by guyverbob on Nov 26, 2009 1:30 PM EST reply actions

Blah!

Yes and Machida tried really hard to finish the fight. Don’t tell me those flurries that mostly hit Shoguns arms were him trying to finish. During those flurries Shogun would catch and Machida would back off. Shogun was def being the aggressor. I think I’ve figured you out guyverbob with all your hate towards Fedor and other pride fighters I believe you’re one of those lames that have a pride vs ufc still going on even though they’re under the same banner now. Its funny too when people talk about struggling pride fighters. Look who was the top guys in the ufc at that time. Sylvia, Liddell, Franklin, Hughes, and Sherk. Where are they now???

ok..

i really don’t care wat u think, your not worth discusing with..

Same Response from every Machida Hugger

Of course you can’t respond because each time somebody like me brings up those points the Machida Pee Pee sippers don’t have anything to say. You all believe that once you have the belt you don’t have to look impressive anymore or have to prove that you deserve to keep the belt. Nooo you can look like complete crap not be the agressor and get outclassed the whole fight and still keep it. You all say Shogun didn’t do enough to earn the belt but what exactly did Machida do to keep it. I’m waiting…

by Kayo on Nov 26, 2009 5:21 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

well.

maybe i wud talk to u if u did’nt come off as sum dick whos just trying to attack me, heres my response and u might get a better one if u treat me like a human being, whos hand was raised, and who cares wat u think but no matter how much u complain and bitch machida is still the champ, go yell at a wall cause no one cares wat u think..

by guyverbob on Nov 26, 2009 5:52 PM EST up reply actions

and..

i don’t hate pride just fedor..

by guyverbob on Nov 26, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

Typical

Nice response with the who’s hand was raised. That was great you Machida fans are like a broken record. Instead of actually trying to prove what Machida did to Shogun and why he deserves to keep his belt you all respond with “who’s hand was raised?” “Who has the belt?” Then again that’s all you can say since stats, mma fighters, the orgs president and everyone else disagrees with you and the judges decision.

by Kayo on Nov 26, 2009 6:41 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

haha..

cry me a river, once again, answer me u pussy, whos hand was raised??

This Machida fan was one of the first to say that Shogun got robbed

He was the better man on the night and proved me completely wrong, I was happy and angry at the same time, glad my man got the decision but wasn’t happy that he won that way. Shogun fought the perfect fight and deserved the belt, now both men get a chance to prove that they are the best LHW in the world, whoever wins the rematch deserves the belt in my opinion.

By the way, Tito-Forrest was anything but a robbery, you can’t win a fight by standing still blocking punches in the last round or by taking your opponent down then having him reverse you before you can do anything.

Haven't weighed in on this yet...

I had it 3-2 Shogun, and as everyone knows, I am a HUGE Machida fan. Shogun fought a style I have never seen him fight before, and it was undeniably effective. That said, he made no attempt to finish the fight, a lot of his leg kicks didn’t land squarely, and I found his leg attack kind of… lame. Leg kicks should be a means to an end, a way to set up other strikes, not an end in itself. Shogun just didn’t go after it enough, because he knew if he did he would lose all the in-tight exchanges.

I have always liked Shogun, and was very impressed with his performance that night, but if Machida employs a better strategy in terms of defending those leg kicks, Shogun can’t win the rematch. Machida needs to either dart in and attack as the kick is coming, or get out of the way. Checking those brutal Muay Thai kicks is not an option. Lyoto expected an aggressive Shogun, and by the time he realized what Shogun was doing he’d lost a lot of mobility. Machida needs to be more aggressive and he will dominate the rematch.

Can’t wait.

Good post JJ!

Hard to believe that we had good posts today. I didn’t even payed attention to the threads b/c of the quality of the comments earlier in the after noon. I didn’t realize that you W-S and NNR was actually here.

by Alpha Male on Nov 26, 2009 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

Then what did Machida do?

The legkicks were the best offense and the most damaging blows in the fight, it looked like Machida had problems even standing on his legs in the last 2 rounds.

It was quite simply a standup fight where the muay-thai fighter got the better out of the karate fighter. You could arguably give every round in the fight to Shogun, but because there’s a standard for judges giving the guy with higher status the round at times when it’s somewhat close you don’t count on that. Extremely inconsistent judging the last 6 months, they are so impressived of Machida’s style or something that even when he’s getting his a$$ handed to him they think he’s in control.

Impressed not impressived, lol

Like I said, I had it 3-2 Shogun and neither fighter did enough. Typically in title fights, the champion is given the benefit of the doubt in close rounds, and the onus is on the challenger to attack. For right or wrong, that’s one of the perks of having earned the strap.

Machida did land the more powerful head shots and had Shogun wobbled a few times. He was also more aggressive in terms of throwing combinations, which have a better chance of ending a fight.

That's the point really...

This fight wasn’t as one-sided as many are saying, or indeed as biased as the commentary was.

Me and a mate watched it with the sound down and both scored it 3-2 to Machida with the last two rounds to Shogun. When we heard the commentary later we were amazed by how one-sided it was.

Whether our opinions were right or wrong it goes to show that this certainly wasn’t as clean cut a “robbery” as people keep crying about and neither fighter really did enough for it to be conclusive.

Before anyone says anything about not knowing what I’m talking about I was a 10-0 Kickboxer and teach Karate and Tae Kwon Do so I do have experience in the matter (also learning Judo from an ex member of the British Olympic Judo team so getting to know the ground game too ;) )

by Jimrod on Nov 27, 2009 2:37 AM EST up reply actions

you deserve some heat.

Shogun outpointed the point fighter and outkicked the kicker, what’s there not to like? Machida has that style that if you’re gonna beat him you’re going to have to do exactly what Shogun did, and in order to do it you have to have Shogun’s skills! Rashad thought right, problem is he had nothing to offer.

by Tito-4-life! on Nov 26, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

agree with guyverbob

This is just a popularity contest. It goes by round not by who landed most in the fight sorry for ur losses (both u sore losers n Shogun)

Truth is tito was robbed WAY more than Shogun but because tito has so many haters nothing mounts from it

kicker??

thats why he beat silva and rashad, by kicks huh??
and i don’t deserve heat because unlike u i have my own opinion, and i tried to post nicley so if anyone of u shogun nut huggers did’nt agree that maybe u wud tell me ur case ina respectible manner but u did’nt ur all the same, u hate guys wen they lose but when there on top again ur all over them, i bet u hated shogun b4 the liddell fight and now u love, its ppl like u that make this great sport look bad..

by guyverbob on Nov 26, 2009 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

guyverbob, seriously!

I’ll say it again, when i see your posts i see a 12 year old who’s trying to battle guys with kid arguments. Machida’s kicks and is what he controls his fights with and that’s how he forces guys to go inside and eat his single left hand counter.

I’ve always loved Shogun, and i’ve always liked Tito. I stick with my guys, no matter what because i know what they can do.

It’s judges like the one’s in that fight and in the vera and partially ortiz fight, that makes u look at this sport as some entertainment joke and not really a sport where the athletes get to decide their fate. there are alot of ppl in the world who lost money they should have won on those fights!

No, you’re a kid because you have in fact admitted to being a kid. But I don’t hold it against you.

Yeah guyver you say that you’re 18 but I can swear that most of the time you sound more like 15. You should take the example of Jared. He’s always respectful and you can’t tell that he’s 16.

hmm?

wen was that, being 18 does’nt mean ur a kid, u cud try pushing for teenager but not kid..

I will still take Chida in the rematch.

by BNF on Nov 26, 2009 1:34 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I like how Shogun has handled himself like a true Champion and has not moaned about being on the receiving end of one of the worst officiated decisions in MMA history!
With that said, I’d like to see Shogun be a bit more aggressive with his hands. A few more combinations and stick with punishing Machidas legs, Charlie Murphy style!
I can’t wait for this fight to go down and hopefully its in Vegas with different officials. Shogun wins this one!

by Sofa-King-Toasty on Nov 26, 2009 1:40 PM EST via mobile reply actions

hmmm..

idk man he keeps making comments about he won, a true champ would look forward and respect the judges decision, all hes done is said stuff like for example “i llook forward to the rematch but i won the last fight”, stuff like that he just can’t let it be, always has to bring it up how he thinks he won..

by guyverbob on Nov 26, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

ha..

thats my point that im trying to say, we all have our own thoughts, i think machida won but i won’t call anyone wrong for thinking shogun won..

by guyverbob on Nov 26, 2009 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

everybody is allowed to have their own opinion but as the rules follow, Shogun won.
It’s like Machida can sit back and do nothing in fights and be alright with it b/c the judges think “oh, that’s what he does” and somehow justify his inactivity and him getting beat up in fights. having a certain fighting style shouldn’t have nothing to do with it, in the end punches are punches and kicks are kicks it’s all the same. I felt the same way after the Randy fight that just because clinching is what Randy does he got points, but really he did nothing, didn’t land anything and didn’t take Brandon down.

by Tito-4-life! on Nov 26, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

You’re right Tito-4-life, rules are rules. That’s why Machida won. He won 3 rounds to 2, and thus was victorious. If you scored it overall, maybe he lost, but that’s not how it works.

But Machida will be better prepared for him this time around.
