Report: Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Junior dos Santos UFC 108 fight canceled

If you thought the injury-ravaged UFC 108 fight card coudln't take another big blow think again.

Former number one heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga has been forced out of his upcoming showdown with up-and-coming prospect, Junior dos Santos, at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2, 2010, because of a severe staph infection.

True story ... believe it or not:

"The hits keep coming for the UFC, Dana White and matchmaker Joe Silva. The fellas have to scrounge up a quality heavyweight to fight Junior Dos Santos Jan. 2 in Las Vegas at UFC 108. Sources with the UFC confirmed that Gabriel Gonzaga is off the card because of staph infection."

"Napau" joins Brock Lesnar, Anderson Silva and Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira on the long list of notable fighters who have had to bow out of the promotion's traditional year-end "blockbuster" pay-per-view (PPV) event for various health reasons.

No possible replacement for Gonzaga is known at this time; however, Cain Velasquez would be an awesome fill-in if the promotion isn't scared of setting one of its brightest prospects back a little bit to start the 2010 fight season.

UFC 108 features a re-worked main event between former light heavyweight champion "Sugar" Rashad Evans and the hard-hitting 14-1 Thiago Silva. Power-puncher Paul "Semtex" Daley will also try to continue his ascension to the top of the welterweight contender list when he battles grappling wizard and former WEC champ Carlos "Natural Born Killer" Condit.

For everything you need to know about UFC 108 feel free to also hit up our event archive right here.

Wow

This is getting ridiculous. I doubt the UFC wants to do it, but who wouldn’t love to see Cain-JDS co-main event this card?

Same here

JDS-Cain makes the most sense, I say make that fight for the interim belt and have Lesnar-Carwin when Brock gets healthy, winners unify the belts. Then the champion can face Big Nog-Mir/Kongo for the belt.

by David W-S on Nov 25, 2009 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

Looks good to me.

Ill pick JDS over Cain all day, if that fight happens im definitely putting cash down on Junior. Cain is very beatable on the feet, Kongo proved that. Too bad Kongo is the dullest tool in the box, JDS wont make the retarded mistake of following Cain to the mat after rockin him.

Why?

So they could add another hurt heavyweight that cant fight right now

The UFC will just spit in the face of M1...

Either cancel this god damn card or give it away for free on Spike...

after filling it with a bunch of short notice guys. This fn thing is by far more cursed than UFC 33 and 85 combined. As far as what green the JDS- Cain thing, i gotta say that Cain’s win of Kongo and Big Ben are certainly bigger than JDS’ over Cro Cop whether you wanna go by MMAth or each guys relevancy as of recent. I myself want Junior to get a little more time to tighten up his wrestling and BJJ games because for anyone who has seen his old fights – his wrestling game is still not developed to face the upper echeleon wrestlers even if a lot of time has passed since.

Though this sucks, if this fight is moved to 109, then JDS, A Silva and Nog will have concurrent training camps which means all of them should show up in peak form. WAR Minotauro Team!!!

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Nov 26, 2009 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

War Team Black House

UFC 108 = disaster, I agree NNR they should make 109 the supercard and cut their losses with 108 by putting it on Spike or at least charge less money for PPVs and give a discount to those fans who bought tickets expecting the annual supercard.

Carwin can’t sit on the shelf that long. I’d give Carwin Dos Santos and match Nog with Velasquez… since Nog and Dos Santos won’t fight each other.

Not certain that Barney will be ok to fight for 108 b/c of his knee and he won’t fight at 109 b/c his wife gonna have a baby.

by Alpha Male on Nov 25, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

Depends how long Brock is out

If it’s a long time then Carwin will have to fight first but only JDS and Cain will be ready for 108 and that card badly needs a quality co-main event as so far it’s shaping to be a disaster.

On paper those fights work better than mine but I’m trying to take injuries into account as well and so far Brock and Carwin look to be out for the longest and if they come back at a similar time then they may as well fight each other.

by David W-S on Nov 25, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

Carwin is ready late February. Brock, who knows. It’ll be longer than six months, I guarantee you that.

F… it looks like GSP will be fighting in March at 111 and Sera/Trigg will be at 108.
I don’t understand why they put him on a card almost 1 month before MTL. Especially if they got to move the date b/c of Pac/Mayweather. Damn they could just move the date for end of April like usual when they comes to town and it would be a win/win situation damnit!

by Alpha Male on Nov 25, 2009 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

Ufc 108

They should just make this show free on spike and make ufc 109 their big show

by Bigboys401 on Nov 26, 2009 11:26 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Carwin??

Or is that too dangerous for Carwin and the UFC?

I hope Gonzaga gets better soon, I’m a fan. Staph sucks. Say NO to Staph!

by FredtheFantastic on Nov 25, 2009 6:14 PM EST reply actions

Carwin would never disrespect Thanksgiving or Christmas by training for a fight during them.

I'm kind of a big deal.

Surprised you didn’t call him an arrogant prick for taking the holidays off. Jesus Christ EVERY Christmas this guy takes off! Who does he think he is?!

TAKE IT BACK!!!

You shut your dirty mouth right now and touch come wood with crossed fingers!!!!!

by IrishKev on Nov 25, 2009 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

Oooops

Meant to say ‘some wood’ :P but if that does happen, it’ll be a shite ending of 2009/ beginning to 2010 for UFC

by IrishKev on Nov 25, 2009 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

touch come wood some wood.

Either way was funny enough for my immature brain to laugh

But this is a pitiful year end card.

Supposed to be the annual huge card. But its turned into the battle of the last 2 to get decapitated by lyoto With a relative co main event of 2 new comers to most fans n the UFC.

And I would’ve much rather seen dos vs Gabe then Cain or Shane stepping in. Just had a good ko percentage

by daniel worby on Nov 25, 2009 6:40 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

what is come wood?

I knew it. I just knew it! THese cards are cursed! Cursed I'm tellin' 'ya!

And to think that this was one of the very few future UFC bouts that I was lookin’ forward to…SO don’t tell me Penn and Sanchez next?! Come on Lester!

and there goes

the fight I was mostly looking forward to at what was left of 108… Hope they can get Cain to fight JDS, that would save it for me!

I agree.....

Cain vs Junior is a great repalcement and Rashad vs Sliva as a main event is worth the money…we should send letters to the UFC to stop flooding us with so many cards, 1 a month is fine, too many injuries!!!!

by Robert(1) on Nov 26, 2009 9:26 AM EST up reply actions

definitly

to much ufc is f"ing it all up, 1 a month is plenty and it would make it more appreciated instead of saturating the situation

by tkkpal on Nov 26, 2009 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

Holy geez

Has to be Cain or Shane. Anybody less will be unexceptable.

by BNF on Nov 25, 2009 6:42 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Lame

Dos santos would have killed him, but he will destroy whoever they find to replace gonzaga and that includes carwin and cain.

by mma guru on Nov 25, 2009 6:45 PM EST reply actions

Wow are you kidding

Everyone just keeps dropping like flies. In order to save this card i suppose try and bring back Chuck and let him fight someone like Franklin, Vera, lil Nog, Tito. What else can you do with everyone out or scheduled to fight on other cards

damn wuts up with all these dam staph infections, viruses,?!! Who’s giving it 2 everybody? i think it all started with whoever infected big nog!! Cain vs Dos santos wud be a sick ass fight! or Carwin

All we have to do is find out who has been boning both Nog and Gonzaga, then we’ll know who the Outbreak monkey is.

yet another

falls… i smell sabotage! its really weird, so many guys getting injured or having infections… ufc got a long list of guys to use, but when this many top rank fighters are out.. damn… i think the feb card is gonna be far better than this one…

by Imade Uquit on Nov 25, 2009 8:03 PM EST reply actions

mma karma at its worst

I’ve been thinkin this for a while but its just obvious now. Dana talked all that shite about the best fighters being in ufc and fedor being scared. Ever since fedor declined his offer we have had a big name injured once a week. The roster card looks like swiss cheese. I agree that ufc can’t co promote when the other side only brings one fighter but dana could have been slightly more humble after it fell apart. The mma gods said screw pissing on ufc let’s just take a big sh*t!

by DrewMoney$$$ on Nov 25, 2009 10:08 PM EST via mobile reply actions

jesus man

ive been the biggest cain hater forever…but at this point im ready to see him fight…give him dos santos….if he can step up on short notice….i dont know how long it takes for the kind of surgery carwin has to heal…and then to rehab it…and the rehab it to the point where he can train 100 percent to get ready to train…so theres no telling when he’ll be ready…

but if cain can step up and save the card with dos santos it will save the entire card i think…

i’ll take cain vs dos santos over gonzaga vs dos santos anyday…

if cain steps up to replace gonzaga i’ll automatically jump on that dudes bandwagon and bounce on his cock like a pogostick from now on….

jake shields is the highest ranked fighter to have never fought i highly ranked fighter...i cant wait till hendo signs to strikeforce and murders that talentless waste of flesh

WTF is wrong

with CRO COP, he could best both these suckers together on a good day. lets hope he shows people who the real CRO COP is in australia when he knocks rothwells head off with his deadly left high kick. WAR CRO COP, man i love that guy.
Between wand and cro lets hope ufc 110 is like pride all over again with the two legends showing their true capabilities and ktfo BIS and BEN.

by tkkpal on Nov 26, 2009 6:47 AM EST up reply actions

Cro Cop

I’m afraid to say hasn’t been the same since he left pride and got into a cage, his mental state has been abysmal lately too – I’d like to see him back to his best but unfortunately have my doubts. As cheesy as it sounds it’s all about the “Eye of the tiger”, it happens to all fighters at some point when they settle down and have something to lose – once you’ve lost “the eye”, it’s very hard to get back.

by Jimrod on Nov 26, 2009 6:09 AM EST reply actions

lets just hope

he pulls off the w anyway against rothwell, a good ko would give him back his mojo

fact

well according to a few other mma sites this morning!

by Newfie3 on Nov 26, 2009 8:32 AM EST up reply actions

same sites that claimed Wes kicked Kimbo in the head

Then he fell in the pool and Rampage had to give him mouth to mouth. That was the stupidest and funniest spoiler I ever read. But the one you say makes sense. He probably just wants to train more.

by ElStIkO on Nov 26, 2009 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

makes you think its more

bs every day imo, do we ever get to hear the real reasons why these guys dont fight and shit like that, they just pulled kimbo from behind the scenes and said dude youll get embarrased again if you fight this guy so lets draw out the obious and let houston have the honours, that way more $$$$$ and viewing time and exposure etc etc etc.

by tkkpal on Nov 26, 2009 8:46 AM EST reply actions

i agree

you gotta believe dana said something to him, like you said..you will get embarrassed..losing twice on the show will ruin any hopes of a career..so just wait for the finale!

by Newfie3 on Nov 26, 2009 9:09 AM EST up reply actions

Why the Kimbo hate?

you hate on him because of his name only. He probably has worked the hardest on the show and is by far the most humble guy. The only reason you can hate on him is because you are a homo and deep down you love him.

by ElStIkO on Nov 26, 2009 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

no kimbo hate mofo...

He is humble and i like the man but were only stating the obvious, and your the one with an ass like the japanese flag id say you douche

by tkkpal on Nov 26, 2009 10:10 AM EST up reply actions

he will beat Alexander and his terrible conditioning.

by ElStIkO on Nov 26, 2009 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

i hope so to

would love to see him do good but i just think houston has his number…
hopefully its a slug fest

by tkkpal on Nov 26, 2009 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

true

i never hated on kimbo at all! just stating obvious as tkkpal as alluded to…just saying as a business decision dana probably said something behind the scenes just to help his career out! his loss on the show was to the best fighter (well most decorated coming into the show anyways) so instead of jeoparizing losing on the show AGAIN, which is brutal for your career, why not wait till the finale and fight a somewhat legit fighter in houston! thats not hate

by Newfie3 on Nov 26, 2009 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

I just dont think he got embarassed

Or will get embarassed. He showed a lot of heart. The fact he even took the show was great. The guys a family man and a stand-up guy.

by ElStIkO on Nov 26, 2009 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

He showed heart

And didnt look the worst but big country isnt that good or have much power, Granted kimbo didnt have a chance when it went to the mat but you may be sure houston has more ko power than country, and again were only stating the obvious, not hating.

by tkkpal on Nov 26, 2009 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

I hate Kimbo

Because he’s a Tank Abbott rip-off who made his name by looking tough in illegal streetfights that idiots watched and decided that he was the best fighter on the planet, so he ended up being the posterboy of a crooked promotion as well as a reality show and paid millions despite not having any talent whatsoever.

by David W-S on Nov 26, 2009 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

f"ing hell pretty harsh dude but

everyones entitled to their opinion, i hate JOSH"THE COCK JOCKEY" KOSCHEK for no apparent reason to.

WAR CRO COP!!

by tkkpal on Nov 26, 2009 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

about time someone agreed

I also think that jos should of got his purse taken off him rather than be rewarded for his wwe like actions….. talk about milking the situation..Josh “THE MILKMAN” koschek.
Whether he got poked or the strap of the glove touched his eye or whatever he was defo acting it up bigtime and that kinda shit sucks in full blown mma imo
