TUF 10 fights are bad and boring ...

Frank_mir_medium

... according to The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 8 coach, former heavyweight champion and current WEC commentator, Frank Mir:

"I don't even know what's going on, I had to turn it off. I'm being serious. It was bad. Some of the fights were horrible. I haven't seen any fights in the WEC that could ever amount to being that bad, because the lighter guys are just more competitive. They're in shape, they're more strategic. Even when you go to a college wrestling match, typically, the heavyweights are boring to watch.... I'm a heavyweight and I'm saying... (the fights are) nowhere near as exciting as the lightweights."

Fortunately for Frank, TUF 10 is on hiatus this Wednesday (Nov. 24), returning next week with a two-hour special on Spike TV before the Finale on Dec. 5. Are you looking more forward to the final episode or the fact that the season will soon be over? Any suggestions to improve future seasons? Let's hear it, Maniacs.

TUF needs to end or do something drastic

Build smaller weight classes, do a veteran’s show again or a show with actual prospects or hell a women’s season, anything but the sh!t we’ve had to put up with. Thank god i stopped watching four episodes back.

by NNR (formerly NameNotRequired) on Nov 25, 2009 12:08 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with the vet show again and the prospects one

But a womens TUF would never get ratings and would never happen, Atleast not untill the ufc has an established womens weight class

gina carano and chris santos could be coaches.

they could find eight women to fight. admit it. most guy’s like watching women fight especially one’s with skills and beauty. it’s an untapped market. strikeforce puts women fighters on and they rarely disappoint. sarah kaufman has incredible skills. kelly verra knock the zhit out of kim couiture too.

Agree Gold

No one wants to see a womens season. They sort of did that already. Gina was a coach on this Muay Thai show, with Kerry Vera. It sucked.

This season is the worst ever

I never seen so many out of shape guys. Everyone gasses, no one is agile, 10 minutes of sucking wind every single week.

The one and only Smitty...

i agree

i have watched every season and this one was THE worst..there should at least be a cardio test that they have to pass before they can make it on the show..it was a sad sad sight..
i have no desire to watch a chicks version of tuf either..don’t think dana would promote that since he does not put chick fights on any cards..

probably b/c it was on some obsure channel we tv maybe

women entertainment. might have been discover channel. i saw it once so i can’t really give it a grade i do agree with santos being not so good of choice but who else? i i would definitely watch any women over the fat belly’s and no gas in the tank hw we got this year. to jay you must have watch b/c you said it sucked. i think ufc could do a better job of it. i would also tie it in with a male middleweight show. seperate house’s of course. it’s definitely an untapped market and if ufc does not do it strikeforce/showtime just might

I have no desire

to watch women fight each other, the only episode I watched this season was Kimbo vs Big….I agree with Mir it;’s terrible!!!! Getting tired after 1 minute is a disgrace

by Robert(1) on Nov 25, 2009 8:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Mir is right

Despite trash-talking Brock and paying for it in the cage, I still like Mir, especially his WEC commentary. Sure, he comes across as smug, but he’s one of the more intelligent UFC fighters. And in this case he’s right. There are maybe two or three HWs from this season at most who will get more than just their TUF Finale fight. That includes Kimbo, who will be kept for his ability to draw ratings from the Noobs who think he’s the greatest fighter in the world.

I'm kind of a big deal.

i also like mir's commnetary but his job before he actually made some big money in ufc fights was bouncer

at the spearmint rhino gentleman’s club in vegas. i know b/c my girlfriend dance there. we have since move to lake tahoe. vegas as a city is a complete mess. unempolyment, the second worst next to detroit. the subprime mortgage crises hit las vegas the worst. empty houses in every part of the city. we are glad we are gone.

Nice chance for Mir haters to sound off.

Only problem is he didn’t say anything disrespectful or untrue. But that has never stopped them before. But now it is not about one of their Brazilian heroes so there will be silence.

War Brazilian heroes

Mir’s right, HWs are boring to watch compared to the smaller fighters including Mir and Kongo. The only Mir fights I enjoy are when he lays on his back getting pounded on e.g. against Brock, Cruz and Vera.

Most of the HW fights on TUF have sucked as well, the only ones with any future are Marcus, Brendan, Justin and Roy plus Kimbo because of the dumb idiots who buy into the hype and still think that he’s any good.

by David W-S on Nov 25, 2009 10:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

so true kimbo

How many fights will he have to lose before the excuses stop? N we stop blaming the opponents for beating him? Does that even make sense? A good personality doesn’t make up for a shitty fighter. Sorry.

I feel like 3 fights is an honest spread. 3 straight losses before ppl start to smarten up. N that’s too many IMO.

Even last season's...

Country vs Country theme, which was widely criticized was far better than this crap season. It actually added some decent fresh blood into the lightweight and welterweight divisions as UFC 105 showed.

How about a Brazil vs USA or something since the USA seems to be running low on fresh decent fighters for some reason (or the TUF scouts are not looking hard enough!)

by Jimrod on Nov 25, 2009 1:49 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I liked UK v US

There was little nonsense and some talented British fighters got to make a name for themselves, I’m a fan of Ross, James, Andre and Nick, all 4 have very bright futures. Only problem with that series were some of the arrogant idiots on Team US (DaMarques and Cameron), the guy who wouldn’t fight (Pierce) and Bisping being a coach, he was so lucky that he had a good team as some of the things he did were laughable, even Rampage never missed a fight (well yet anyway). Thank god Alex Reid lost and never got on the show, he’d have been an even bigger embarrassment for British MMA than he already is.

hmmm

I’ve been a bit baffled as to how this season was hyped as the most amazing one so far. It definitely hasn’t lived up to that hype, and I agree with Mir – it’s been incredibly dull. The majority of these guys are so poorly conditioned and gas halfway through round one that it ends up turning into slap fights between overweight sloths. Oh well…. At least Rampage kicked that door’s ass! (most entertaining 30 seconds of the entire season)

by zordon on Nov 25, 2009 2:35 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

agreed

the door was the most entertaining piece of the whole show. And at the end of practically every eps hyping it like the slice was fighting again. and i know the hype is for promotional purposes but for genuine mma fans the ufc should just be honest and tell you that this shit is not worth watching unless you havent a f"ing clue. i thought the purpopse of these kinda shows were to showcase the up and comers, make the ufc more mainstream, all it has done to casual fans is tarnish the sport with these unfit, bs talking, douchebags(bar one or two)!!

Well duh..

I think the LW’s have been the most interesting in TUF by far. Season 8 was great. I liked how Mir and Nog had different style of approach to it and liked them both.

Time for TUF Comeback 2. Or another theme. Over 30 vs under 30? Or something like that. It doesn’t have to be country vs country, it could be like North America vs South or Europe or Asia or whatever.. Throw in a couple of hotheads.

Doing it with 135 and 145ers for a WEC contract but under the TUF name so people would actually tune in would be great. Torres and Faber as coaches to help them. The exposure helps the WEC and we get to see in shape exciting fighters.

old format

Sorry I know every1 on here has found it ‘non mma’ for them to show the house antics, but I miss the old stuff where we see the idiots etc that happens in the house.

Ya, its not mma, but I always enjoy seeing who these guys are outside the cage so it gives me a better perspective on who they are as ppl so I kno who I like n don’t like.

Yes browning was an idiot, but if they chose not to show that stuff we’d probs have more browning fans. Showing him 4 what he was allowed me to guage an opinion on him n not like him.

I’m not saying don’t show em training cause I do like seeing who looks in shape etc to guess who’s gonna win. I just think a lot of the bore this year had to do with the lack of getting to kno the guys too.

That and the guaranteed ‘2 slobs going to decision in exciting manner ’ every fight was old too. (exciting=sarcasm for u lesser readers).
Also, I tend to disagree with the comeback idea often. I feel this show was meant to give the guys who’ve been working very hard to get this chance their opportunity. N to take it away 4 guys who’ve already had theirs bothers me.

What they need to do to fix the ‘talent’ is stop using ‘names’ to get ratings.

Use the most deserved fighters whether u like their personality or if ppl know em or what.

Take the best new products n I guarantee some of em will come with their own rating grabbing personalities.

TUF sucking as says something

The UFCs best days are behind it.

TUF will continue to suck.

Dana has no idea what to do….IE….Tito coming back and getting a huge paycheck.

Dana has world domination in mind but he has already let the quality of the company slip in the process.

Do you remember him talking up TUF like it was a great season?….What a turd it ended up being.

by DubNub on Nov 25, 2009 9:56 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Completely disagree

The NFL is the best league in America because you have a league full of guys who dedicate their lives to the sport and work hard because there is an opportunity to make a ton of money doing it. Everywhere I look, all the old karate gyms now also offer BJJ classes. We are a few years away from a whole generation of fighters who have been doing MMA their entire lives, as opposed to a bunch of college wrestlers who wanted to do something besides get a real job after graduation. TUF is not representative of the true level of talent in America or around the world.

I'm kind of a big deal.

All these comments and yet nothing positive added

I’d consider looking at a four team TUF showdown almost like the playoffs. This would give the UFC a larger pool of candidates to draw from and possibly create a four way drama that could include many different angles.

Face it, regardless of your opinion, the basic formula works.

Perhaps, the teams leaving the house to do something rigorous and yet be a team builder might be a start. Who knows?

But get them the hell outta the house and find out.

There were many above u that posted positive suggestions as how to fix the huge problem tuf 10 posed. Maybe u just don’t agree with em (I don’t agree with 1/2 myself) but there still options n any option that results in better viewing pleasure for us & more money for zuffa is positive criticism.

I hear you. I just hadn’t seen anything original. A repeat of season four? Sure I liked that one the best. But most of the ideas presented prior to mine were already used and not original. I was looking for newer ideas that haven’t been used on the show yet, not recycling older ones.

Either way, I’m a fan of the TUF series and don’t really care who watched it for a minute (then turned it off) or watched the whole thing.

I watch the program from end to end because I Damn well like it! :)

Hate to say it but

I agree with frank on this one, TUF 10 is the worst season ever. Honestly I have been recording them and just watching the fights since about week 3. I would love to see them change it to 2 fights per week and show less BS. im not sure what it is, but these fighters do not make good TV. In previous seasons most of the guys just act like a bunch of tools which I think hurts the sport. This season its just a bunch a fat guys being lame and Rampage continuosly talking/acting like a total idiot. This show needs to change,

by HEELHOOK on Nov 25, 2009 11:10 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

? comeback show ?

Still don’t get this idea. We have enough old guys on verge of retiring in the UFC right now. N we need new talent/personalities for when their gone.

Also, I was under the impression the show was made in order to find & promote fresh faces.

If we’re hellbent on a comeback show tho, I pose this suggestion that I just thought of as a decent compromise:

A veterans vs rookies season. Why not? The older vets that get brought back aren’t usually elite or they wouldn’t be gone in the 1st place.

And if ur a rookie n u beat a vet, ur already building star status before the finale.

I think its an interesting idea. & u could even bring back the 2nd chance guys like thales (I kno he’s in another org), or karo (make him be in the house cause he’s a putz), tamdan (cause he was dropped injustifiably anyways) etc.

Thoughts?

Over 30 vs Under 30

That was the best idea yet. Picture some unknown kneeing coleman into dream land. Didn’t they already hint to gsp and hardy coaching? I don’t think tito or lidell would fight on a show like this but many others would come off the senior tour. How about team graice vs the world? Maybe they could beat rashaads record and go 8-0? . No matter what they don’t need another entire season dedicated to heavyweights. The cardio has been the killer, maybe an 8/8 split with another division but please don’t give them the entire season ever again. Mir speaks the truth.

by DrewMoney$$$ on Nov 25, 2009 12:58 PM EST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

Best Tuff idea ever

The next time the show does heavyweights make it a requirement for the contestants to be able to run 2 miles without walking. Only an 8 minute 2 mile even. This would force the fighters to be in SOME shape before the show and would weed out those not serious about fighting. No more double cardio gasses after 2 minutes of fighting. Make them demonstrate a few escapes, chokes and submissions to show they have had some training and make them preform some strikes, takedowns and throws before ever making the show.

Getting 16 hungry fighters that can run 2 miles and can demonstrate some basics in ground fighting and striking should not be hard to do. You could get 16 guys from my local town that are better than 90% of the tuff contestants. Let me pick the guys Dana!

by hatteras on Nov 25, 2009 1:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

8 minute 2 mile even?

I doubt many heavy weights or any weights could run 2 miles in 8 minutes, and its easy to shit at home and complain that they are tired after a couple of minutes. You should try getting in the cage and fighting, 2-3 minutes feels like a life time.

by vinrex7 on Nov 25, 2009 1:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think he meant 8 minutes per mile, which should be relatively easy for anyone in any sort of shape. Any shape other than round, I mean.

I'm kind of a big deal.

by P-Dub on Nov 25, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Fighting is very different to running...

Adrenaline is involved and you have to concentrate 100% – When I was fighting I could do all the circuits in the World, hit bags for hours etc etc but when you get in the ring you’ve got a sweat on within 30 seconds – it’s a very different kind of fitness and you see similar probs with fighters on most seasons of TUF.

As for the comments people make about Mir being smug and proud of himself – well he was UFC heavyweight champ and he knows more about it than you, after all what did you do?

by Jimrod on Nov 25, 2009 4:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Lack of skill

The reason it’s been such a crap season is the quality of the fighters. Not one of them deserves to be in the UFC as they stand.

Look at any other season and there’s a clear difference in the talent from this year.

Just because they’re heavyweights, they should still be able to go the distance!

I definitely wouldn’t say drastic changes are needed, but dana cannot be coming out saying that this is the best season ever. It makes his other words much harder to believe.

I really liked season 9, the rivalry between the brits and americans was pretty interesting and kept the stuff in the house interesting too.

by kevan321 on Nov 25, 2009 7:05 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think they are just exhausting the talent pool. I also liked the “comeback season”. Wouldnt mind seeing another one of those. Worst part of this season has been the constant “will kimbo fight?” BS.
