Dana White: 'We deliver great fights'

Dana-face_medium

"The one thing no one can ever say is that we don’t deliver good fights. People always look at a card and say it’s not going to be any good. Then it ends up being the best card of the year. Just because Brock Lesnar is not in the main event doesn’t mean there won’t be great fights. If you’re a fight fan you want great fights. We deliver great fights."

UFC President Dana White responds to some of the recent criticism over his rapid-fire pay-per-view schedule that unfortunately has been ravaged by fighter injuries and other various illnesses and maladies. White contends that headlining bouts of Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin for UFC 106 and Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva for UFC 108 are more than deserving of main event status -- despite being promoted to that spot only after it was left open by Zuffa's first choice. Any card that isn't headlined by a current champion tends to draw the fans ire, but is the UFC simply a victim of its own success?

Got that right

I’ve agreed to decrease ppv buys down to 3-4 per year until further notice. I have to stream, go over someone’s house or catch it on MMA.core the next day. I’m still watching all of them though.

If you are paying for it and watching it alone there is no way most people could afford it.

I just watch it with a bunch of friends at one of our places and split the cost and it’s always a good time with good fights and good MMA discussions. This card is actually pretty damn good top to bottom…even the 2 free fights on spike should be solid fights. I prefer main events that are title fights or at least #1 contender fights but the return of Tito is still a decent storyline.

took the train last year

I don’t suggest it to anyone. I thought it would be cool to not have to worry about traffic or anything. But it was boring as hell, really expensive and no smoking. I think at 83 we left Friday night and stayed in Belleville, woke up early to finish the drive into Montreal. That is the best way to do it.

I took the train from Toronto to Montreal a few years ago. Got stuck sitting across from a bunch of teenagers tripping on acid, making a huge spectacle of themselves. I had a vicious hangover and tolerated it for a couple hours, then calmy leaned across the aisle and said “if you don’t shut the fuck up, you’re going to be peaking in an ICU”. The kid turned bright red and shut up. The people behind me applauded. Threatening teenagers is awesome.

Guys are girls?

When I watch with the guys like any other sporting event there is not much talking. The ocational comments come out on the action or lack of action. Don’t take any offence guys this is just question commy asshole or not how can you prefer to watch the fights alone? For me it’s a reason to get out with the buddies and have a good time especially on a Saturday night.

by Puck Head on Nov 19, 2009 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

Concentration

Puck after smoking a couple, I find it hard to concentrate on the fights. None of my friends are die hard. They watch the fights, but don’t go online like an addiction. They don’t know enough to shut up. They always ask things like….Who did this guy fight last, who has he beaten, where did he fight before, who’s this Fedor guy and can he beat that Brock dude? Shit like that ruins the whole experience. When I pay 50 bucks for fights, I want to see and hear every minute of it. Plus I would never ask people to chip in, so why ruin even a second of a fight with free-loaders?

by jay. on Nov 19, 2009 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

Stop the world!!!!

I actually agree with Dana on this. The only reason being that Brock not being on the card doesn’t do anything to worsen the card. Never been entertained by Brock so far, so for me the card is no worse than it was with Brock on it.

Call me a hater, but watching a guy lay on another guy and do the “name twenty chocolate bars” chinese torture is not entertaining.

You kept making all the stops?

by introvert on Nov 19, 2009 2:18 PM EST reply actions

I agree as well. Big name’s don’t necessarily make good card’s (they may sell PPV buys), good match-ups make good card’s. The UFC has really shit the bed on the last few cards. Randy vs Vera was a horrible match up and made no sense at all. The UFC really baffles me with their picks sometimes.

by ~Savage~ on Nov 19, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Good match-ups are fine and dandy, but I can see good match-ups on Bellator.

Good match-ups between elite fighters are what people will pay for. Admittedly, I will be buying this card, just like I have bought every card years now, because i am a total sucker and Dana has me by the balls. I simply can’t miss big live fights, and there are enough intriguing match-ups on this one (Lil Nog/Cane and AK/Kos) for me to bite the bullet. Internet streaming is fine for Showtimne Strikeforce cards (no Showtime in Canada), but I can’t have buddies over and watch a choppy feed on a PC monitor. Fight nights are sacred for me.

That said, this may be an entertaining fight, but it is the most irrelevant main event of the year. The other contenders were UFC 93 (Franklin/Hendo at 205) and UFC 96 (Rampage/Jardine).

the bill only comes once a month. I’ll worry about it then if need be. I do understand however, that it is expensive. I personally don’t go out, or drink much. Yes.

I have two friends who have become somewhat MMA knowledgable (one is a guy I’ve trained boxing with since we were kids) and they are the only people I can stomach watching with. It’s become kind of a tradition at my place. Beer, fatties, snacks and sometimes even a cigar.

I’ve had friends come over who ask questions or shout at the tv, I can’t stand it. I like to just get nice and high and watch the fights alone. The price isn’t something I’m concerned about.

Or if you guys could just get out a little more often you would know by now that they are satellite receivers (hot box) that you can get all the channels + PPV for free. Big fights

The UFC is trying to have big PPV but they keep getting the injury bug. There was one good fight on the 105 fight and the PPV buys have been way down since 101 even with there big named fighters. The UFC should go with 8-10 PPV’s a year instead of 14. They are trying to build guys up and it is not working. There depth in every division is questionable and they are running out of contenders. Dan Hardy getting a title shot is pathetic to say the least. With that said, I love the UFC but Dana needs to cut back. They are worth 2 billion for gods sake, they dont need 2 shows a month.

by Kilby06 on Nov 19, 2009 2:48 PM EST reply actions

There was a lot more than one good fight at 105, there were a few cracking fights in the prelims and other than the main event the main card was also excellent. The only poor fights were Couture-Vera and Hathaway-Taylor.

I agree that there’s great fights but to the degree of willing to pay for it is questionable. It makes life easier/cheaper that so many restaurants/bars showcase UFC PPVs though. Dana obviously has to make a statement like that at a promoter’s stand point.
