Manny Pacquiao versus Miguel Cotto open thread and discussion

Pacquiao-cotto_medium
Okay, so it's not MMA, but it's still combat sports -- and one hell of a fight.

For those of you who want to discuss the epic 12th round victory for Manny Pacquiao over Miguel Cotto last night (Nov. 14) at "Firepower" in Las Vegas, go ahead and do your thing in the comments section below.

Pics, gifs, opinions on a potential showdown between "Pacman" Pacquiao and Floyd "Money" Mayweather, it's all fair game.

Have at it!

World class combat.

This was one for the ages. Pac-man is from a different planet. Seriously one of the best fights in recent memory. Thanks for acknowledging it Mania.

Bring on Gayweather!!!

I am weeping bitter tears...

My fellow countryman Cotto was handled by the supposedly “smaller” man. I take solace in the fact that Cotto lost to a world class HOF’er. He went out on his shield like a true warrior.

i think all will agree

MMA or boxing, i am a fan of 2 world class athletes going at it and leaving everything out there. This was one hell of a fight!

Very strange that Marvin Hagler isn’t in either of those pictures.

by argyle on Nov 15, 2009 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

Hagler’s right there for sure, but seven world titles in seven weight classes? Come on. This guy is the best ever.

The crazy thing is that he looks better and more powerful as he moves up in weight. He let Cotto hit him early in that fight to “taste his power” and walked right through the hardest punching weltwereight in the world’s best shots. The way he moves in and out while throwing blindingly fast, unpredictable combinations right on the button is a thing of beauty.

He is amazing.

He is simp

Pac man is too fast but I believe Mayweather is just as fast. Should be a great fight if they can come to terms on how the purse is split.

by DjCopasetic_519 on Nov 15, 2009 9:42 AM EST reply actions

i say split it down the middle: $1 zillion per fighter.

i hate boxing now

But good fight. Should be a good fight if him and Mayweather throw down.

by ElStIkO on Nov 15, 2009 10:19 AM EST reply actions

Thank God for this fight.

I can’t say enough how happy I was at about the third round of this fight. I mean, with all the talk about boxing “being dead, yadda, yadda, yadda,…..”, it only took 1 round of boxing to wake me up from the coma I was in after watching Randy Couture try to bear hug Brandon Vera for 3 rounds…..then another 2 rounds to remind me that the level these two athletes apply their trade at is 10X better than the level an MMA fighter apllies his at. Flame away…but it’s true.

2 things I got out of yesterday…..

1) I’ve been saying it for years, and get called a “Pride nutthugger idiot”….but THE CAGE SUCKS!!!!!! Guys like Couture who are looking to hug their opponent for 15 minutes wouldn’t last 1 round with Vera in a ring.

2) Hate on boxing all you want, but their events just seem so much more classy than an MMA event….whether it’s Strikforce, UFC, etc… One of the reason is the MMA events lack of “National Anthems”. Every sport in the world plays Anthems before the game starts…..or fight, in boxing’s case. Why doesn’t MMA do it?
To me the anthems’ kind of add a little bit of excitement and build-up before the fight., and add some class to the events. MMA promotions should do this before their main events.

what?

You actually posted this stupid thing on more than one thread? Were you afraid that someone was going to miss this goldmine of a post?

Big props to Cotto for gutting it out and going out on his shield like a true warrior. He made the fight way longer and more entertaining by staying in there and firing back against overwhelming speed, footwork and talent. Miguel took a vicious beating last night and a lot of great fighters would have called it a night in round 8 or 9.

As for the anthems…

Meh.

?

So you’re pissed that boxing is discussed here, but you are using this site to try to get a link to watch the boxing match?

I have a perfect link to this fight………too bad I won’t give it to a double-standard following whiner.

curiosity

I’m not a boxing fan anymore, but if JJ says it is an amazing fight why not see what the hype is about? Introvert called me a whiner…..Man that is rich. Unlike you introvert I have an open mind and am willing to check things out whether I like the sport or not. If someone I can stand like JJ comes in here and says… Check out this amazing 720 Tony Hawk did. I would go look at it, even though I don’t like skateboarding.

Pacman-Cotto was a superb fight, rounds 3 and 4 alone made this a fight to remember. Even better I got to watch this with a Mayweather and Hatton fan who had been bashing Pacman the whole time, dismissing the quality of his past victories, so this hammering shut him up. Manny is the man, easily my favourtie boxer and I hope that he faces Mayweather next, that PPV would be huge.

As for the cage v ring debate I personally prefer the cage because there are a lot less unnecessary pauses in the fight, sure there are grinding clinches against it like in Couture-Vera but I’d take that over refs having to break up the action repeatedly because someone got caught in the ropes during a ground battle, it makes the fight look silly and can have a disadvantage on ground specialists. The ring may look nicer but I’ll take a cage over it anytime.

National anthems are a waste of time in general, especially if your national anthem is a song about some old woman with no power anymore and a god you don’t believe in.

Nice pics!

Pacquiao is the best boxer currently.
Thanks for sharing, Jeremy!

It was really a great fight. Pacman is a beast. I really wanna see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. I hope that they can work the money out. I was a little nervous about Cotto’s power, Manny took everything he had to prove that he could do it!!!

by Shadyone33 on Nov 15, 2009 2:16 PM EST reply actions

Mayweather is scared.

Floyd ducked Cotto for years, because he was one of the few guys in that weight range who could really hurt him. After what Manny did last night, Floyd is probably shitting his designer undies.

Boxing takes a leaf out of MMA's book...

Watched UFC 105 last night and then watched the Pacman v Cotto fight. Was good to watch a matchup boxing fans have wanted to see, the model UFC uses to line up it’s fights.
Hopefully Mayweather is made to look like a coward if he tries ducking PacMan on account of anything other than to prove who’s the best. Got a lot of respect for Cotto for adjusting as many times as he did to try to cope with Pacman, and survive as long as he did, very smooth technique. Pacman’s just a once in a lifetime talent.
And yeah, what was up with the ref letting Randy lean on Vera for 3 rounds?? I’m a fan of Randy’s but he hardly worked at all.

not for a while

mayweather/pacman won’t happen for a while, so don’t hold your breath. mayweather is gonna use the ol’ “waaaaah i want 60/40 split otherwise this fight ain’t gonna happen”. pacman is the bigger draw…. i’d say mayweather is SLIGHTLY faster than pacquiao, but not by much…and still mayweather has NO POWER behind his punches compared to pacman. if this fight were to ever happen, manny will DESTROY mayweather inside of 7 rounds.

This was an amazing fight. I give props to Cotto for taking as much punishment as he did but his corner should’ve called the fight a few rounds earlier. He had already absorbed an incredible beating and the fight wasalready lost. No shame in calling it quits at that point. And Pacman is amazing.
