UFC 110: Nate Marquardt vs Chael Sonnen in the works for Feb. 21

Dan Henderson may still be negotiating a potential contract with the UFC and Strikeforce, but don't expect hungry middleweight contender Nate Marquardt to wait around for him to make up his mind.
"The Great" is currently considering a 185-pound match-up opposite the surging Chael Sonnen for UFC 110, tentatively scheduled for the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia, on Feb. 21 according to Sportsnet.ca.
Marquardt (29-8-2) made a case for a rematch with current champion Anderson Silva with a "Great" knockout over undefeated submission wizard Demian Maia at UFC 102 -- also his third straight win.
"Spider" spokesman and manager Ed Soares suggested the unofficial match-up of Marquardt vs. Henderson following the Aug. 29 Portland event in order determine a number one contender for the division title while Silva takes a break from competition to heal an ailing elbow.
Sounded good on paper -- except they probably didn't realize "Hollywood" was no longer under contract after air-mailing Michael Bisping across the pond at UFC 100.
Life goes on -- and so too must the quest for middleweight gold. Vitor Belfort managed to leapfrog the competition for a crack at the crown, so Marquardt will try and use the time provided to quiet the uprising from the suddenly relevant Chael Sonnen.
After a first round submission loss to Demian Maia at UFC 95 earlier this year, Sonnen (24-10-1) stepped up on short notice to dominate Dan Miller at UFC 98 back in May.
Despite his wrestling pedigree, which earned him the unanimous decision win over Miller, Sonnen opted to use his stand-up to stun the venerable Yushin Okami just last month at UFC 104.
It was clear-cut (albeit surprising) victory that made a very strong case for his place among the potential title contenders.
A win over Marquardt would only solidify that standing.
UFC 110 is expected to feature International superstars Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva and Yoshihiro "Sexyama" Akiyama in a hard-hitting 185-pound brawl that pits sexy vs. psycho. Free-falling heavyweight striker Mirko Cro Cop is also rumored as an opponent for former IFLer Ben Rothwell.
Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on this still-developing fight card.

FOCK DANA WHITE***
Dana hating on SFF,Fedor and Grim:
“CBS would be out of their mind to put that rinky-dink [Strikeforce] . . . on the air again . . . and without that backing, [promoters] won’t have the money to pay [Emelianenko].”
“Fedor just got his face smashed in by Brett Rogers. Do you know what Brock or Frank Mir and Cain Velasquez would do to Brett Rogers?” White said. “It’s time to bring this guy [Fedor] in, to see Brock Lesnar smash his head.”
by john G on Nov 10, 2009 9:49 AM EST up reply actions
I was curious to how Dana was going to react, I was really hoping he would go the route of saying that they were good fights but they still do not have the top tier fighters, you know something of that nature. Rogers probably would get beat by those guys but Rogers could also knock any of those guys out. If Rogers landed that jab on the exact same spot on any of those guys there nose would be bleeding and cut open too. Also, Fedor knocked him out so what is he bitching about. Dana Strikes(force) again lol.

Dana should be banned from talking about other organisations, he just comes across as an arrogant tosser and never has anything nice to say no matter how good the card is.

Nate vs Wandy would be a great fight or Nate vs Vitor.
Sonnen isn’t worthy yet IMO.

Yepp, I got Nate, Wanderlei and Cro Cop as the winners :D easyy for nate like u said but I’m not so sure about Cro Cop, not as good as before :(..whats the main event going to be..anyone know??thankkss xoxo

Cro Cop will look on form again. Rothwell isn’t equiped to handle cro cop on the feet. Doesn’t have the striking acumen of a JDS or Kongo so it will look like the Al-Turk fight. It will once again give all Cro Cop fans hope to be dashed soon after when he fights someone else who can strike.
Also this fight would be tougher for nate is Sonnen fought strategically like he did against Okami and Miller. Marqy has technical wrestling but not on par with Chael and isn’t as dynamic off his back as a Maia. Standing he blows his doors off. Good fight b/t two top 5 guys even if makes no sense.

DANG, I was really hoping Akiyama would bow out and we’d get to see
NATE vs WANDY
That would be a perfect fight for both of them. If Nate beats Chael people will still say, “So, who’s he fought”. If Wandy beats Akiyama, people will still say, “So what, can he still hang with the young lions???” Nate vs Wandy would be a chance for both of them to really prove something.

wandy/Akiyama is a perfect match up! No need to mess with that fighht!
Nate/Chael iis solid, but makes little sense

Nate would murder the Murderer
That fight would be:
someone in their prime versus someone not so much

Wandi, Nate and Rothwell will win. Wandi’s far too big for Sexyama, Nate’s too well rounded for Chael and Cro Cop is finished mentally, I’m amazed he’s still fighting.

Apparently Crocop has finally started making some changes to his camp including getting a new boxing and muay tai coach. Hopefully, we will see more of the old Mirko if he can get his head together too.

i dont see how this fight is easy for nate, sonnen rarely makes a mistake, and nate isn’t going to sub sonnen so it’s a 3 round decision i go with sonnen on it, by lay and pray

Maia never makes a mistake, except in the first few seconds when Nate KHTFO. Nate gets better every time and he has been destroying guys lately. Okami made Sonnen look better than he is. Unless Nate makes a mistake, it’s a rather easy fight for him.

im sorry, Nate should have the title shot before Belfort. I understand Belfort TKO’d Franklin, but it wasnt even a middle weight fight.. but if Belfort wins the title wont he be the first champ in 3 divisions?
by Kenny on Nov 10, 2009 8:32 AM EST reply actions
I don’t get why you people keep making a big deal out of what weight Belfort beat Franklin at? Who gives a sh1t if it was a few lbs different. Franklin is the former middle weight champ and is even better at 195 than he is at 185. Franklin would still be the MW champ if Silva hadn’t come along, and beating him closer to his natural weight means more than beating him at MW. And who the hell has Marquardt ever beaten that’s on the same level with Franklin, Hendo, or Belfort??? Answer NOBODY! I like Nate as much as anybody, but let him beat somebody like Wandy or Franklin before you start telling me he deserves a second shot over Hendo or Belfort.
by shonuff on Nov 10, 2009 9:41 AM EST up reply actions
Well for one, Hendo beat Franklin so there goes that theory that he would still be champ. Nate made much quicker work of the better fighter Maia then Hendo did of Bisping. Hendo has only 2 wins (1 dec. and 1 KO) since losing to Silva and Nate has 3 KO’s. That’s still close and can be argued either way, but Vitor has ONLY 1 recent fight in the UFC and in no way is more deserving than Nate. Don’t get me wrong, I like Belfort and think him and Nate are the only guys that stand a chace at dethoning Silva. Maybe Dana is worried that Nate might just beat Silva and then he can’t cash in on Vitor fighting Silva while he is still the champ. This is just my opinion on what I think is fair to the fighters, but as long as I get to see both fight Silva, I’m happy.
by Nate on Nov 11, 2009 1:27 AM EST up reply actions
Dude, be realistic. Nate has exactly ZERO chance of beating Silva. He could barely handle Goveia until G gassed out. Nate is the top of the mid-range fighters, but has done nothing to prove he’s in the elite class. Comparing his win over Maia to Hendo/Bisping is silly, since both Maia and Bisping did something rediculously stupid, which is no credit to Dan or Nate except that they both had the KO power to take full advantage of their opponents’ stupidity. The fact that Maia went down quicker just means he got stupid earlier than Bisping, not that Nate did anything special.
Belfort has less than a 10% chance of beating Silva. Hendo has the best tools (his wrestling) but I still give him less than 30% chance. Nate has absolutely nothing that’s a threat to the Spider. He’s slower than Belfort and vastly inferior grappler to Hendo. I seriously doubt he would survive Wanderlei Silva, much less Anderson. I think Wandy is the best test for him at the level he’s at now to see if he can hang with even a past-his-prime elite fighter. If he beats Wandy, he’ll be ready for Hendo or Belfort.
by shonuff on Nov 11, 2009 9:30 AM EST up reply actions
Belfort absolutely DOES NOT deserve a title shot. He fought ONE time in the UFC and didn’t even fight a contender at MW. IMO he would get destroyed by Sonnen or any determined wrestler as he’s proven throughout his career.
by frosnt on Nov 10, 2009 10:47 AM EST up reply actions
frostynuts, you’re forgetting that Anderson Silva got his title shot after only ONE FIGHT in the UFC, against unranked Cris LEBEN. Surely you’re not suggesting that knocking out the previous MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION (whose only loss at Middleweight was to Silva) means less than a single win over Chris Leben??? I don’t think Belfort will beat Silva, but he did a lot more to earn his shot than Anderson did to earn his.
by shonuff on Nov 10, 2009 11:03 AM EST up reply actions
Yea well if we’re going to use AS as the standard of comparison then one win always qualifies you for a title shot. AS was made the number one contender bc he was pretty much the only contender at that point. Now, the ufc has nate and turned down henderson’s shot to give vitor the title shot. I think they would make Belfort fight again but they know he’ll just lose to any of the top middleweights.

by shonuff on Nov 10, 2009 12:57 PM EST up reply actions
I have to agree with frosnt because I was going to say the same thing until I read his post. You logic fails because at the time Silva got his shot, there wasn’t a guy named Nate Marquardt on a tear and more deserving. I don’t know if I agree that Belfort would lose to any top MW though. He seems to finally have his head on straight and has recently beaten 2 top MW in quick fashion. With his hand speed and killer instinct, he is a threat to any MW, including Silva.
by Nate on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM EST up reply actions
This fight is offensive to Marquardt fans.
The guy is 5-0 since his titleshot but the UFC just don’t want to give him another chance, while fucking overrated Couture can lose 10 in a row and still get a fucking titleshot in whatever division he wants.
Its ridiculous.
by Lester The Pimp on Nov 10, 2009 8:33 AM EST reply actions
Marquardt fans are offensive to rational human beings, as are Couture haters. How can you say the most accomplished and decorated champion in UFC history is less deserving of a title shot than a guy who lost his only fight against at TOP 3 fighter. Marquardt hasn’t even proven he can beat a FORMER champ or any other big name in his division. I like Nate, and it’s not his fault they haven’t matched him up with those guys yet, but fact is, he’s still unproven against the greats, lost to wash-out Leites and looked unimpressive against Goveia. How does that put him ahead of greats like Hendo or Belfort who just KOd the previous champ??? You guys need to get over your fantasies about Marquardt and wait your turn till he proves he can hang with the big boys.
by shonuff on Nov 10, 2009 9:58 AM EST up reply actions
How did Nate not look impressive against Gouveia? Busted him up and then TKO’d him.
by bruce on Nov 10, 2009 10:27 AM EST up reply actions
Watch the whole fight, not the highlight reel. Goveia was beating Nate standing for the first 2 rounds till he gassed out. It was a boring fight and Nate did not look good at all until the last minute or two.

I’m w/ Lester! Nate should be getting his rematch w/ Silva, and anything else is a waste of his time. He’ll walk through Sonnen!
by LJ on Nov 10, 2009 12:32 PM EST up reply actions
problem is, even if he walks through Sonnen, so what! Who is Sonnen? He’s not a TOP 3 and beating him does nothing for Nate. Nate deserves a chance to prove himself against one of the sport’s elite names. He’s nowhere close to ready for Anderson, but deserves to be fighting someone like Wandy or Belfort instead of being stuck forever fighting mid-level guys, which is all he himself will ever be until the UFC gives him a bigger test.

it’s really starting to look like Henderson is going to Strikeforce. Sonnen should have another fight, if for some crazy reason he beats Nate the UFC will say he’s the #1 contender and give him a title shot. before i didn’t really care what happened to Henderson, but now i reall want him to stay in the UFC cleam out the MM divison and get another title shot.
by FatAttack513 on Nov 10, 2009 9:09 AM EST reply actions
Meah if Dana cared @ all he’d find a way to keep hendo. He doesn’t care cause he thinks he can do whatever he wants. Hendo cornered soko @ SF & will definitely be signing else where then the UFC. I’m sure he’s hitting strikeforce. Therefore making them 1 step closer to UFC. Cry all ya want, STRIKEFORCE is the real deal. & they didn’t put all there eggs in 1 basket as many are saying.
For the December card, they have lindland, sobral, smith, cung Le, cyborg, Gina, lawler & more @ their disposal if need be, not to mention some repeat fighters if need be from Saturdays card.
Nate will run thru chael & if it were a SF match up you’d all be saying “wow this is useless! What’s going on here? So one sided!”. But its not, its UFC so… Its all good I suppose.
Decent card but its filled with irrelevance. Nate is only true contender on here as of yet, & he will remain that so…
Fight wise tho, it should be exciting, and I’m anticipating more odd drama surrounding the unstable Crocop.

Fedor broke his hand and will be out for 6 months, if that means he can’t start training for 6 months he won’t be fighting for at least 8 or 9 months. Do you think SF has generated enough interest to stay in business long enough to wait for him? I guess their roster of mostly UFC rejects are going to have to carry them. Oh and the December 19th card is on Showtime which is PPV here, do you think they will get enough buys to pay their fighters even?

Well there you have it! You guys get free healthcare and we get free StrikeForce! At first glance it might seem that we’re getting the short end of the stick. But if you put a little spin on it, would you rather have chemotherapy, or an evening with Gina??? God bless America, Baby! Heheheh.
by shonuff on Nov 10, 2009 10:27 AM EST up reply actions
shonuff, showtime is free cable to Americans? Health care isn’t free either, that is just a cute spin politicians put on it to make other countries envy us. The extra taxes I pay for ‘free’ health care are brutal (seeing as how I’m never sick).
scott, Dan is a good name to get but he isn’t going to affect their numbers. People like him but they don’t go out of their way to make sure they see every one of his fights. Lashley isn’t talented like Lesnar and probably won’t be around long, but as a short term fix he might do.

Babalu was cut because he wouldn’t let go of a choke.
by frosnt on Nov 10, 2009 10:51 AM EST up reply actions
Wrong promotion, when he wouldn’t let go of the choke that was after he had left the UFC wasn’t it? I thought that was his first Affliction fight? Maybe I’m wrong, than let him back in the UFC, where do you think he would be fighting and where would he be ranked? That is why he was cut. Even if he did do the choke in the UFC do you think that is why? BJ would have been cut a long time ago if that were the case.
by jay on Nov 10, 2009 10:58 AM EST up reply actions
jay, frostynuts is right, Babalu got cut from the UFC because of that choke at UFC 74. Heath had a cut on his forhead and for like 20 or 30 seconds after he went to sleep and the ref called the fight, Babalu just kept squeezing, making blood shoot up out of Heath’s head like a freakin water fountain! The guy could’ve gone into a coma or something. If I was White, I wouldn’t have fired the Babalu, I’d have had Brock, Chuck, and Rampage waiting for him in the parking garage. IMO that was the MMA equivalent of the Tyson earbite, but more dangerous.
Oh, and I was being facetious about your healthcare being free. It’s “free” in the same way our cable is, you pay for it up front whether you use it or not.
by shonuff on Nov 10, 2009 11:22 AM EST up reply actions
Is that video on youtube? I haven’t seen that one either, sounds crazy. I’d heard about it but figured it was old or done somewhere else. The health care we have here is awesome, even if we do pay without using it. The peace of mind you get out of knowing you won’t have to worry about grabbing your check book to go to the hospital can’t be replaced with a couple dollars a day they take. I heard the US just past a bill about health care, what is that about? Are you guys finally catching on to our example?
by jay on Nov 10, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions
Jay, one minute you say the extra taxes you pay for heathcare are brutal, the next you say it’s great and well worth the measly couple of bucks. I am very divided on this healthcare issue and the radically polarized and contradictory reports we get from Canadians is a big part of the ammunition used by both sides. I work for a non-profit and am uninsured and work with a lot of poor immigrants from other cities. If it weren’t for a state government program that provides free insurance to these folks, some of my friends/clients might be dead. Health care costs here are astronomical. I spent one night in the hospital for bleeding ulcers/dehydration and it cost me $8000 USD at the cheap 3rd rate inner-city hospital. Took me years to pay for it. Problem is, the drug companies have deep enough pockets to buy the congress. I don’t see how Obama can fight them unless he could somehow get rid of the Congressional health care benefits and make the Congress pay what the citizens pay for healthcare.
by shonuff on Nov 10, 2009 12:51 PM EST up reply actions
Strikeforce is making some moves yes, but I am not convinced they have the proper management and they have a history of poor decision making. They have a stable of second-run fighters, and you know that their first-rate guys would go to the UFC and the big time if they had the opportunity.
The loss of Dan Henderson will not hurt the UFC. He is at the end of a long career and won’t ever return to prominence.
by Drake_Labatt on Nov 10, 2009 10:00 AM EST up reply actions
Drake LAbatt, Dan is past his ‘best before’ date but he would be the second best MW in the UFC and the best MW at SF or the second best LHW there as well. There is nothing wrong with that at all. Other than that….Great post.
by jay on Nov 10, 2009 10:12 AM EST up reply actions
Losing Dan won’t hurt the UFC as much as seeing him headline Strikeforce cards. They need to keep him just like they need to keep Tito, Forrest, Chuck, Wandy, and Kimbo…because no matter how bad those guys get, the UFC can’t afford to let their competitors get them and put them on Network TV. Don’t beleive me? Consider that 4 times more people watched Kimbo fight James Thompson than watched Noguiera vs Couture, two of the greatest of all time.
