UFC 110: Stephan Bonnar vs Krzysztof Soszynski in the works for Feb. 21

Former Ultimate Fighters Stephan Bonnar (11-6) and Krzysztof Soszynski (18-9-1) are reportedly considering a light heavyweight showdown at UFC 110, tentatively scheduled for the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia, on Feb. 21 according to MMAWeekly.

Bonnar has dropped two straight inside the Octagon after returning from a catastrophic knee injury he suffered while training for a big fight against Matt Hamill in April 2008.

Because that injury came on the heels of a steroids suspension, "The American Pscho" was out of action for nearly a year and a half. He returned at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" but the long layoff and a very gifted opponent, Jon Jones, ended any chance of a successful return last January.

He got a second chance to right the ship at UFC 100 this past July, but was once again stymied by the wrestling efforts of MMA elder statesman Mark "The Hammer" Coleman.

While Bonnar's contributions to the sport before, during and after his run on The Ultimate Fighter will probably keep him from being unemployed anytime soon, dropping three straight could be a major blow to his marketability as a fighter.

And Soszynski doesn't want to be the guy who propels him back into the limelight.

Star-divide

"The Polish Experiment" went awry in his 205-pound war with Brandon Vera at UFC 102: "Couture vs. Nogueira," though unlike Bonnar the August defeat was his first since Dec. 2007 and snapped a six-fight winning streak.

Soszynski cut his teeth under Dan Henderson in Temecula, Calif., along with training partner Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. He has a strong wrestling base, powerful strikes and solid submission skills to boot.

UFC 110 is expected to feature International superstars Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva and Yoshihiro "Sexyama" Akiyama in a hard-hitting 185-pound brawl that pits sexy vs. psycho. Free-falling heavyweight striker Mirko Cro Cop is also rumored as an opponent for former IFLer Ben Rothwell.

Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more updates on this still-developing fight card.

Bonnar will get destroyed

by horny for mma on Nov 9, 2009 11:55 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yup you guys think dana will ever drop him from the UFC? I mean I know he said that he feels it was becouse of the bonnar/griffin fight that mma has gotten so big and ive heard him say that as long as he was president that they would be part of the company but you think hell ever drop one of um and just give him an office job or something becouse Bonnar should have been cut by now

by Nor Cal Mexican on Nov 9, 2009 3:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bonnar wont be destroyed. THis will be a good fight. Only real advantage that Kristoph has over Bonnar is power. stephan is a very under rated grappler, better then Kristoph and his basic Kimura for sure. stephan is also a better technical boxer. In my eyes, Kristoph is the favorite, but this is a very winnable fight for stephan. Win or lose its going to be a close fought war!

Bonnar has shown…if nothing else….that he is durable, so I don’t see him “getting destroyed” either. Bonnar’s skill set is solid. His major problems are that he is slow, unathletic, and lacks the explosiveness required to put people at risk with his technical striking. His grappling is solid, but he may be the easiest LHW in the UFC to take down.

As the sport grows, it’s becoming more about speed and explosiveness, as the skillsets are becoming more equal. The guys that lack top notch athleticism, like both guys in this matchup, have to execute perfect gameplans to compete with those at the top of the food chain. It can be done on occasion, but usually it’s too big a hill to climb.

Bonnar will get destroyed. He will get taken down repeatedly and pounded out.

by Nate on Nov 11, 2009 12:26 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree on that. Bonnar should be dropped. The UFC doesn’t need anymore gate keepers.

by DolFan on Nov 9, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Unless the UFC decides they only want to employ a handfull of fighters in each division, there will ALWAYS be “gatekeepers”. Not every fight needs to have championship implications. As long as the fighters employed bring it, we as fans will see more fights if the UFC maintains depth in it’s divisions.

The only way to beat Krystoff is through muay thai and better striking. Bonnar has none!

Is this the headline event?

by peazy on Nov 9, 2009 11:56 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Is this a real question?

haha … my thoughts exactly

by c3decker on Nov 9, 2009 1:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Headliner? Bonner is airliner. Krzysztof is headbanger.

goooo kristoff i sat beside that guy in geography class in highschool! just waiting for him to give me props after one of his kimura wins :P

by Jerrolds on Nov 9, 2009 12:02 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Why? DId you teach him the kimura, or did you help him cheat by letting him copy your answers in your geography exam?

by Syd on Nov 9, 2009 11:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

How much longer is Bonnar gonna be in the UFC? Kristof by kimura hahaha.

by Mike831 on Nov 9, 2009 12:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Sometimes we forget, but I suggest casual fans do their research on Bonnar before dismissing him so quickly. He has an assortment of impressive credentials in Western boxing, Thai boxing, and black belts in BJJ and tae kwon do. He’s also been in with some of the top 205ers in MMA like Evans, Griffin, Machida, and Jardine.
In another org, Bonnar would be wearing gold, so maybe we should keep that in mind before posting nonsensical sh!t like, "Bonnar should be cut" or whatever

by ItsNormlToSmokePot on Nov 9, 2009 6:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i could not possibly care less about a fight.
i hope this is a battle for employment.

krzysztof loses one fight and is up for unemployment in your eyes?

by randy murders on Nov 9, 2009 12:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If Krzysztof lost it would be his second lose back to back.

by ryan on Nov 9, 2009 3:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

this fight will determine the undisputed gatekeeper in the lhw division instead of a belt they get a gatekeeper medal

I like bonner though I think he may have a future in broadcasting he knows the fight game to a T

by dia mette on Nov 9, 2009 4:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

His last fight he lost a UD to Vera, who is now fighting one of the icons of the sport. Fighting for his job? Gimme a break!!

I like Bonnar’s tenacity, but I think this one goes to Sozsi…Sosco…Szoc….the bald guy with the ink.

by Freddy on Nov 9, 2009 7:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think bonnar took the last two fights kinda easy and got destroyed. I dont see him doing that again. but still kristoff by UD.

by bellio on Nov 9, 2009 12:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Can someone plz tell me why Bonnar is still in the UFC… plz… can’t stand this idiot…

by sigepsal on Nov 9, 2009 12:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i agree. it’s because of his slugfest with Griffin.

by Stryker on Nov 9, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He has exciting fights, thats why. You can’t rattle off a dull bonnar fight besides coleman.

Moreover, he has bad ass boxing and is about as well-rounded as it gets.

The UFC could use more Bonnars. I’ll go as far as saying he’ll stay in the UFC despite a loss to the Polish child in a mans body

by jammin on Nov 9, 2009 1:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m with you jammin…I’ve always been a Bonnar fan. The guy has had some bad luck with injuries and getting suspended for roids didn’t help his cause. He’s a solid all around fighter but his take down defense is no where near it should be which is why he gets taken down frequently in his fights. He has solid jitz but you can’t win a fight while on your back the whole time unless you have great jitz or sweeps. His boxing skills are technically solid but his hand speed is lacking and that holds him back. I still like him as a fighter and I hope he wins here but I don’t see him ever being a factor in the division.

by Buster Bluth on Nov 9, 2009 1:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bonnar is definitely an exciting fighter win or lose. Why get rid of a guy like that? Rather see him fight and lose over and over again, than some of the other guys who win boring fights again and again and don’t go all out for the win.

by JayJay on Nov 9, 2009 3:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

How many chances are they going to give Bonnar? I think this is his last one, 3 losses in a row is a no no for anyone including UFCs goldenboys.

by Lester The Pimp on Nov 9, 2009 12:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

tell that to Chuck Lidell, Wanderlie Silva, and Randy Couture after this next fight.

by frosnt on Nov 9, 2009 1:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

and houston alexander lol

by onthebutton336 on Nov 9, 2009 1:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

None of those mentioned has lost 3 in a row in the UFC.

Houston Alexander is the one exception.

by Lester The Pimp on Nov 9, 2009 2:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dana is gonna cut Wand. The MMA world will stand still in shock. Hater will rejoice.

by NameNotRequired on Nov 9, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I hope you wrong NNR plus his just too exciting if he does get cut I hope he goes to strikeforce
War Wandi!!!!

by Nor Cal Mexican on Nov 9, 2009 3:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

w silva and bonner will never get cut your crazy

just because bonner was a participant in the most important fight in ufc history gives him a pemanent home in the ufc and it doesnt have to be fighting it could be calling the fights dana will keep bonner employed for good

Ill even go a step further and say w silva will soon be inducted into the ufc hall of fame even though his ufc credentials do not warrent it in any way but you can say what hes done for the sport is abaove and beyond

by dia mette on Nov 9, 2009 4:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

W/ Wandy fighting at 185 and the chance that you could see him fight Anderson…man, I’d hope they keep him!

by Freddy on Nov 9, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

this must be the headliner, gee whiz, I can’t wait to pay $50 to see Bonnar lose 3 in a row, wow, thanks. No, No, i don’t feel like a sucker at all. Bonnar v Kristof is a great fight.

sarcasm off.

UFC 108 TBD
UFC 109 TBD
UFC 110 Bonnar V Kristof

how about mixing in a title fight now and again, you know, 5 rounds, top contender vs. the guy, oh hell what do they call them, oh yeah, champions.

My next and first fight, TBD, so I am in a tie with UFC, and I don’t fight.

WOW, what a lineup. For all the barking Dana does about how bad everybody else is, Strikeforce put together a nice card the other night, and there was a title fight too!!!!!!!!!

by the Slovak on Nov 9, 2009 1:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

WTF are you talking about?? Bonnar v Kristof wouldnt even be main event at a fight night!! bj vs diego at 107 is a title fight and brock vs carwin will probably be main event at 109. there’s another title fight..You my friend are special! lol

by ItsNormlToSmokePot on Nov 9, 2009 4:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bonnar is due for a good win. All the best

meh

by manalito on Nov 9, 2009 1:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

God, I hope Bonnar gets his head ripped off. I had a 4 fight parlay locked at both ufc 94 and 100 and had 3 out of 4 won, but lost cause of Bonnar. A loss to Mark Coleman? Seriously? I’m still pissed about that. I wish the UFC would cut him, but Dana already said that he’ll never be cut no matter what due to the over discussed Griffin/Bonnar fight that happened like 30 years ago.

by Josh H. on Nov 9, 2009 1:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

THIS FIGHT IS A JOKE!
My granny can beat Bonnar!
(and she died about 8 years ago!)

by Jack on Nov 9, 2009 1:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t understand the hate for Bonnar.

He is extremely well-rounded and has an affinity for using his boxing.

This makes for exciting fights with anybody.

by jammin on Nov 9, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

jammin.. u realize ur the only one washing bonnar’s ballz? he’s garbage and a roid user. 3 losses in a row, one to 75 year old Mark Coleman? really? he’s exciting bc he stands there and gets his head knocked in? c’mon guy. open your eyes. this guy is trash.

by sigepsal on Nov 9, 2009 4:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe if you opened YOUR eyes you’d realEYES there are many other posters sharing my sentiment.

Something tells me you’re generally not very happy and love to hate anyone outside of Fedor, A. Silva, and GSP.

Clearly the UFC agrees too, having kept him around this long despite his misfortune.

by jammin on Nov 9, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Does the loser of this fight get his UFC walking papers?

by ducknow on Nov 9, 2009 1:54 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

ah haters. both these guys like to bang on the feet.

by JB on Nov 9, 2009 1:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Why all the hate for Bonnar?

Let’s not forget Coleman was 15 seconds away from beating shogun by UD
and lost to jon bones jones who has a ton of potential to be the next Anderson
Silva!! Cut the guy some slack P.S ihope he beats the shit out of Kryztof

by OneToothTed on Nov 9, 2009 2:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Some fights are just for pure entertainment value. whats wrong with that? Nothing thats right.

by elstiko on Nov 9, 2009 2:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Bonnar wont get cut, Dana holds him with sentimental value and thats it. In one of his blogs after Bonnar lost you seen Dana consoling him and telling him its ok that he’ll still be there. Dana wont cut him because of Bonnar/Griffin, commendable that he’ll do that for a friend (because he’ll only be a gatekeeper at a push) but not as a businessman as i dont see him being a huge draw

by irishlilpete on Nov 9, 2009 2:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

exactly…dana has already said that no matter what, bonner and forrest would have a home with the ufc…thats why you see bonner a lot on espn mma live doing analysis…hes getting experience working on different aspects of mma promoting the ufc…and hes pretty good at doin analysis actually…im sure he’ll eventually be doin some guest stuff with goldie and rogan during some ufc shows…

by HellaHectic on Nov 9, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

lol. the main event is guna be Wand vs. Akiyama .Then Cro cop vs. big ben.

Sounds like a good match-up . Hope Bonnar shows a new self this time round.

by Insain on Nov 9, 2009 3:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i dont get all the bonnar hate either. the division can always use a solid fighter, even if he isnt a title contender. this is a great matchup. both fighters are pretty technically skilled and love to throw. they both have the same weakness. they arent as athletic as the contenders.

by COR on Nov 9, 2009 3:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’m not sure if people hate Bonnar. I think some folks just don’t have any interest in seeing two fighters go at it that have absolutely no chance of ever getting the belt. Maybe it’s a subconscious thing. Maybe I’m wrong.
