Programming reminder: 'UFC Main Events' to air tonight on Spike TV

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has upped the ante in its latest round of counter programming, assembling a two-hour block of recent main event bouts to challenge tonight's Strikeforce show from Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
Spike TV has scheduled "UFC Main Events" for tonight (Nov. 7) at 9 PM ET, directly opposite the Strikeforce: "Fedor vs. Rogers" prime time event that’s set to air live on CBS.
Fights featured in Zuffa’s new special include:
UFC 103: Rich Franklin vs. Vitor Belfort
UFC 102: Antonio Nogueira vs. Randy Couture
UFC 101: Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin
UFC 101: BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian
This is not the UFC’s first counter programming effort against Strikeforce. Spike TV debuted UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" to run head-to-head against "Shamrock vs. Diaz" back on April 11, and then put UFC 100 up against "Carano vs. Cyborg" this past August.
While UFC President Dana White at one time supported the efforts of Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, he is now at war with "Strikefarce" since they entered the proverbial big stage.
Who gets DVR'd and who gets watched live? Or will you be wearing out the buttons on your remote, feverishly switching between the two broadcasts?
Let's hear your plans for tonight's MMA programming!

I will DVR it, but I will be watching Fedor live. Cann’t blame UFC for throwing these fights on tv at the same time though.

After seeing this i thought what if these 4 fights would have been the end of the year lineup K-1 Dynamite style. Would definitely be the best card ever in MMA to this point IMO. Anyways, in addition to fedor fighting, i get to see my hero Big Nog beating up the ol captain. Couldn’t ask for anything better.

does anyone else feel ripped off that they’re playing recent main events that I just paid $55 for?
by McArthur on Nov 7, 2009 5:15 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
How is it a failure? They aren’t expecting to win, just take some random viewers away. They already know most will watch CBS. Even my Dad is going to watch MMA for the first time after I told him about Fedor.
by BNF on Nov 7, 2009 5:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Not really Mcarthur.
Would you pay $25 to watch them Sunday night instead? I wouldn’t, it’s all about watching it live, there’s a different feel to watching a live fight.

It’s funny How Dana use to say he supported Strikeforce because they did things right, but as soon as they aquired Fedor, they can’t do anything right and Scott Coker is an idiot!
by DAVE A on Nov 7, 2009 8:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
all the casuel fans will be watching UFC and all us Hardcore fans will watch strikeforce and theres way more of them then us, most people dont even know strikeforce is throwing an event and sont know any of the fighters so the only epic fail is CBS and Strikeforce’s advertising for this event
by Nor Cal Mexican on Nov 7, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Wel Norcal, too bad for the casual fans, hehehe!
But I did my duty here. I introduced Fedor to my neighbors[who are casual fans], and they were hooked! They loved it how Arlovski went down! Classic!
by Syd on Nov 7, 2009 4:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
haha epic failure? i disagree. it is a failure in the sense it wont stop people from watching strikeforce fights, but ill def be flipping back and forth
by Phil on Nov 7, 2009 3:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
nice try dana. I’m pretty sure most people will be watching Fedor tonight. even the haters who talk tough will secretly be watching.

I agree with you man . I was one of those who was pissed at what happened but I love MMA. I cant waitTO WATCH fedor tonight.

Hah, for sure. I think SF has more than a little bit of ground to make up. But this is a fantastic start. CBS primetime MMA with Fedor headlining? Monu-f@cking-mental.

what are you talking about? hahahahahahaha… more like UFC 104, Strkeforce 1, Affliction 0, Elite XC -1. a UFC live event tonght would CRUSH Strikeforce in numbers. a replay of past events have proven to steal viewers as well.
by ---Caesar--- on Nov 7, 2009 12:50 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The Strikeforce main card is pretty good, dude.
by Rob on Nov 7, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh I agree, but they havent marketed it as well as the UFC does, so not enough people know about any of the fighters (casual fans)
by ---Caesar--- on Nov 7, 2009 1:19 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
True that they haven’t marketed it nearly as well as the UFC does with their events, but they’ve done OK. And they’ll still be broadcasting 4 hours of fights (counting the prelims) on CBS, and probably reairing at some point as well, I’d assume. That means anyone with bunny ears will get to see this.
by just some dong on Nov 7, 2009 2:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know Caesar simply because of the sheer number of people who watch CBS compared to Spike. Relatively though the numbers i think would still reside with the UFC since spike is not in nearly as many houses.
by NameNotRequired on Nov 7, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
A lot of people who don’t know Fedor and SF will still watch this. Casual fans and drunk non-fans will tune in to spike because they seen the advertisements on TUF. This is just a way to make sure the mass audiences don’t accidentally stumble upon CBS and decide to check that out.
by jay on Nov 7, 2009 12:46 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
guyver, that is exactly what this is. They are trying to make sure the masses don’t watch SF. That is what counter programming is. What don’t you understand about that? Did you think Dana accidentally put this on at the same time, just a lucky coincidence?
by jay on Nov 7, 2009 4:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
um the company is doing it to take viewers yes, but there not doing it so ppl will never find out about strikeforce and that fedor is soooooo great, there just doing it to take viewrs..
by guyverbob on Nov 7, 2009 6:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Bob, that’s exactly what they’re doing. By taking away casual viewers they’re taking away potential SF and Fedor fans. However, I’ll be amazed if any MMA fan chooses UFC repeats over live SF especially because the live event is on network TV.

Well since i’am from the uk i cant watch any of them.
But since i have seen all the ufc fight i think i will need to dl the strikeforce card as it is stacked with good fight that any mma fan would love to see and I JUST CANT PASS UP A GOOD FIGHT CARD. Hell i think i will even watch the boxing tonight aswell lol.

David Haye-Nikolai Valuev in Germany. The Hayemaker won by MD, justice for the Froch-Dirrell fight as this time the fighter who dodged all of the punchers and fought the smarter fight got the win instead of the slow plodder. Haye may be an arrogant sod but with this win HW boxing just got interesting and after a win over a 7ft monster (who sucks as a boxer but looks a threat to the casuals) he’ll be a much bigger draw. HW boxing is back.

A bunch of fights in which non-whites beat up whites. Reminds me of an episode of UFC Unleashed.
There really is something going on there fellas, they never re-broadcast fights in which white people beat non-whites.
Seems like the UFC may be a Zionist owned company.

Spot on, Robert. I was waiting for someone to point this out. Now let’s you and me get a discussion going about what really matters: Aliens walk among us! Rosewell was a huge cover-up, and we totally faked the moon landing. And can we please do away with this whole “the earth is round” nonsense? Just look outside, people… It’s flat! And the whole universe revolves around it.

Your post really is sad. These are simply the main events from the last few UFCs FFS! If the whites would have won they would be showing the exact same 4 fights regardless you racist.

This is definitely a sad attempt to draw attention away from Strikeforce tonight. Everytime there is a Strikeforce or Affliction (or was) event, Dana is always launching something on Spike. He just needs to sit down and chill out. The UFC is not going anywhere so he needs to get his head out of his ass and stop trying to have a monopoly over the sport. It just makes the sport worse.

won’t bother watching the replays ‘cause i already saw it, but won’t bother watching the SF card either ‘cause CBS sux. I’ll probably download the fedor fight to see what the hype around this guy is, but i won’t be expecting to see much as i don’t think the fight is gonna last too long. fedor by sub/KO or roger by a lucky “throw as many punches as you can and pray 1 of them lands” TKO/KO. Also, fedor doesnt have experience in the SF cage, or any cage i think, that might affect him in the fight.

The only fans they will take away are the fans who’ve never heard or studied the Strikeforce guys. The dumbest part about UFC:Main Events is that you have UFC 105: Vera vs. Couture and UFC 106: Griffin vs Ortiz…….both these guys loose their fights and are pretty dominated. If the casual group of affliction t-shirt wearing douches see these guys get killed why would they pay to see them.

I’m watching Strikeforce not going to bother with Spike as I seen those fights already.
My only real complaint with Strikeforce is that they never show Prelim fights and the events are over way to soon.

THIS STRIKEFORCE CARD IS BETTER THAN THE LAST TWO UFC CARDS. I HOPE THEY CAN KEEP THIS UP. IF THEY AQUIRE HENDO THEY MIGHT BE LEGIT COMPETITORS.

Ok I just watched the Silva/Griffin fight again, in slow mo the whole time. These are 2 of my favorite fighters, so I was only hoping for a good fight, although when the fight happened originally. I thought Silva was just at a different level, and knew he would win, but thought Forrest would at least test him a bit.
What I saw was silly, the three punches that knocked down Forrest were not that hard, but perfectly placed. Now I have studied Karate and MMA for a decade, and have had my share of fights, but come on, I don’t think Forrest could have gotten rocked that bad. I mean the first Bonner fight had much harder punches that landed, and Forrest shrugged them off. Tito landed his fair share of hard shots, and Forrest kept coming. How did punches that were more feelers than anything knock him out?
I love Forrest, but watching it again just makes me go HHMMMMM?
by sawyer on Nov 7, 2009 10:27 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Firstly I can’t believe you chose repeats over a live MMA card on network TV. Secondly, Andy had Forrest rocked a few times, he is a very powerful striker with pin point accuracy who counterpunched Forrest to death. He is also a much stronger puncher than Tito or Bonnar. There was no fix, Andy is simply on a different level. Calling a fight fixed for no real reason just makes you look silly.
by David W-S on Nov 7, 2009 11:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I saw the fight before the live stuff started, as the Spike stuff started 1 hour before Strikeforce. Second, I wasn’t implying there was a fix at all, I just didn’t see how Forrest who has a decent chin could get rocked SO BAD from those three punches. I’m not taking away anything from Silva, I think he is the best in MMA, and his skills are crazy. I just wanted to see a better fight, but Silva is so damn good, and accurate, I wasn’t surprise with the outcome when the fight first aired.
by sawyer on Nov 8, 2009 12:21 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Forrest’s chin isn’t that good, he’s been KO’d by Jardine, Rashad and now Andy. He can take the punches of Stephan and Tito but neither of them are KO artists and the less said about Sinosic and Ramierez the better. That fight was always going to be a massacre, Forrest has sloppy stand-up and can’t take punches from top strikers, Andy has the best striking in MMA.
by David W-S on Nov 8, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
StrikeForce or UFC holding better fights? StrikeForce should win this one easily. The UFC holds 1-2 events every month. Strikeforce might have 2-4 big events in a year. Imagine what the UFC cards would look like if they held the same amount of shows as StrikeForce. What would the UFC events look like if they got rid of everyone but their top 30 guys. Does this mean I want the UFC so start acting like a minor league organization, HELL NO! I watch all of them but the UFC is the biggest thing in MMA by far. REAL FANS watch all of it. HARDCORE FANS watch everything that is not UFC so they can tell their friends how cool they are. Most people recorded both events tonight not that you needed to because most of us saw the UFC stuff the first time around, except you HARDCORE FANS of course you are waaayyyy too cool for that.
by DolFan on Nov 8, 2009 12:44 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
DolFan, why would you record UFC’s “main events”? Isn’t it just a replay so you are a fan you should have those fights on “tapes”
already?
I am sorry but StrikeForce’s event was horrible. Commentators just suck. Only 2 fights with skilled fighters. Just notice how bored the crowd in the building was.
by Pablo G on Nov 8, 2009 12:51 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Strileforce programming is forcing the UFC to air PPV fights much faster. I am no longer going to buy the UFC PPV. Instead, I’m getting Showtime and HDNET, which will get me 4-7 fight cards a month, save me money, and I’ll still be able to watch UFC fights on Spike!!!!
HDNET has more live MMA cards per month than any other network.
by Jack on Nov 8, 2009 7:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I DVR’d both since I hadn’t seen any of the fights. I have to agree with Pablo G though. I can’t stand the commentator’s for Strikeforce.

Good move by the UFC and Spike TV, but I can’t picture anyone wanting to choose old recorded events over a new live event. If you’re a UFC fan then you most likely would have already seen these fights as well.
