Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza vs Matt Lindland booked for Strikeforce: 'Evolution' on Dec. 19

Strikeforce will return home to the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on Dec. 19, 2009, for its next major event titled, "Evolution," according to promotion officials.
While a headlining bout for the card is still up in the air, Strikeforce Director of Communications, Mike Afromowitz, confirmed an intriguing middleweight battle between 2008 DREAM middleweight grand prix runner-up, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (10-2), and 13-year mixed martial arts veteran, Matt "The Law" Lindland (21-6), is set for the main card of the Showtime network event.
Besides his impressive run through the DREAM tournament last year, "Jacare" is probably best known for his rivalry with the flamboyant host of MTV's "Bully Beatdown," Jason "Mayhem" Miller.
The Brazilian defeated "Mayhem" in the quarterfinals of the DREAM tournament in a close decision. After numerous verbal jabs from both men, the pair agreed to a rematch in May of this year to erase any doubt about who is the better fighter. However, the encore also ended in controversy because Souza was unable to continue after an illegal kick from Miller cut him wide open.
It was later ruled a "No Contest."
Then, this summer, both "Jacare" and "Mayhem" signed on with Strikeforce, making a potential third installment of their rivalry on U.S. soil a real possibility. However, Miller got the call to face Jake Shields for the company's title, meaning "Jacare" would have to debut for the promotion against a different opponent.
Apparently Matt "The Law" Lindland was eager to step up to that plate after sitting on the sidelines since a January loss to current UFC number one contender, Vitor Belfort.
Lindland has squared off against a "who's who" of the MMA world throughout his storied career, from Fedor Emelianenko to Pat Miletich to Rampage Jackson. He's also competed under numerous promotional banners, including the UFC, Affliction, IFL, BoDog Fight and others. However, this will be his first appearance for the San Jose-based Strikeforce.
It's an interesting match up of experience vs. youth and wrestling vs. jiu jitsu. "Jacare" certainly has his hands full with a well accomplished Matt Lindland. It's going to be another in a long list of fantastic match ups in 2009 from Strikeforce.
Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on this developing fight card.

I don’t think it’ll be that bad of a fight. Not a barn burner as good ol’JR use say but interesting to see. Winner gets 1st crack at Mayhem/Shields I suppose

Matchup aint interesting. Jacare already sub him out quick at ADCC 2003. This will be a repeat seeing coz linland won’t outstrike him. Jacare is acclamating extremely well to striking while working with Black house and X-gym.

Anybody know what “Jacare” means??? For that matter, can anyone explain to me the difference between “Minotauro” and “Minotoro” in Portuguese? With both the Nog twins in the UFC, they should force one of them to change his nickname so casual fans can tell them apart. A few letters difference in their middle and nick names is not gonna be enough for your average drunk american fan to catch onto.
And seriously, what does ’Jacare" mean?
by shonuff on Nov 6, 2009 2:38 PM EST up reply actions
Ok, nevermind about “Jacare”. I found a Portuguese dictionary online. For anyone else that’s still wondering,
“Jacare” means “Alligator”
Hopefully, the CBS announcers will call him “Gator” instead of “jackoff” or some other mispronunciation.
I still wanna know the difference between the words “Minotauro” and “Minotoro”.

I’m guessing that you never saw his entrance. It’s a Cayman,(Jacare sclerops) is 1 of 5 species of the Caiman crocodilus.
by Alpha Male on Nov 6, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions
Even more so alpha, Souza loves to do that croc walk when he wins. Love it!!
Minotauro means Minotaur aka mythical beast half man half bull
Minotoro means small bull.
If you got Nog question, i am your man:)

Obrigado, NNR! I’ve been wondering about that for years! Any suggestions for their re-naming? I suppose since Rogan has just been calling Big Nog “Minotauro Noguiera”, he could just call Lil Nog “Rogerio Noguiera” and act like those are their first names. That would probably be the easiest way, but it will still confuse people when they try to look them up online for the first time. It did me back when I first saw Nog fight in PRIDE, not knowing he had a twin.

Well, let the general public figure it out for themselves. The average Joe would just distinguish them by tellin’ who’s the older one. People in general are stup!d, but not MMA fans[well, most]. :)
by The Negation on Nov 6, 2009 3:58 PM EST up reply actions
Why not just refer to them as Rodrigo and Rogerio? thats what I do

I like this fight. I thought Jacare was beating Mousasi and would have won in an org like the UFC where upkicks to the face are illegal.
by shonuff on Nov 6, 2009 1:19 PM EST up reply actions
upkicks to the face are only illegal in the ufc if your opponent has a knee down and i’m almost positive jacare was standing when he got kicked so in fact he would have lost
by randy murders on Nov 6, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions
That just shows how crafty Mousasi is at a young age. He’s a young vet.
by The Negation on Nov 6, 2009 4:04 PM EST up reply actions
Nothing crafty about it. Mousasi was kicking wildly and one of them happened to connect with Jacare’s jaw. Mousasi was getting schooled up till that second and had the takedown defense of a paper cut-out doll. It was pure luck that Jacare came down on his heel. That was my first time seeing either of them fight, so I had no bias, but I was not impressed at all with that win. I was much more impressed with Souza than Mousasi.

I don’t know if it will be a very entertaining fight, but it is certainly a very intriguing match up.

whens the last time we heard ANY good news from the ufc?
by brendan on Nov 6, 2009 2:05 PM EST up reply actions
If SF indeed get’s Hendo their MW division is really getting stacked.
by Diceman on Nov 6, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions
if hendo signs with Strikeforce he will be a LHW he stated the only reason he moved to middle weight was to fight Silva for the belt but he prefers fighting at LHW. And really the LHW can use fighters just as bad as the MW either way I think Hendo be a champion for sure at MW if he fought there.
by Puck Head on Nov 6, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions
Hendo’s greedy and asks too much. Back to the UFC for him! I wanna see him and MArquardt fight!
by The Negation on Nov 6, 2009 5:24 PM EST up reply actions
SF is definitely not going to meet his asking price, if the UFC said it was too much to pay him. He could possibly win both belts at SF. I am dying to see Gegard fight someone like Hendo.
by jay on Nov 6, 2009 10:38 PM EST up reply actions
Agreed, Mousasi vs Hendo interests me more than Marquardt. However the fights I really wanna see Hendo in are in UFC Lightheavyweight.

by ndizzle on Nov 6, 2009 1:24 PM EST reply actions
Beautiful? I assume that you haven’t ever taken a look at Lindland’s face. The only thing beautiful about Lindland was Vitor’s KTFO of him at Affliction 2.
by Drake_Labatt on Nov 6, 2009 2:02 PM EST up reply actions
Lindland is an ugly dude. I always thought he looked like John Malkovich’s face on a shrink-washed Tim Sylvia body.

He doesn’t have optimal bathing habits either. Good thing they haven’t invented smellovision yet.

This will be a very very interesting fight cant wait to see it!

I think you guys are under estimating Matt Lindland, I think he has a good chance in this fight. I would also like to see Strikeforce go out and bring Travis Lutters into the mix.
by markie on Nov 6, 2009 5:16 PM EST reply actions
May still be a bit of brain damage i hope he didnt rush this fight. I like the guy but maybe more time was needed. Ask Chuck.
by elstiko on Nov 6, 2009 5:27 PM EST reply actions
I don’t rate Lindland, personality or talentwise, and I’m expecting a Jacare submission. Then he can fight for the belt like he should be tomorrow anyway in a much more interesting fight.
by David W-S on Nov 6, 2009 10:22 PM EST reply actions
My thoughts on fights that would make the card great!!
- Cung Le vs. Scott Smith
- Jeff Monson vs Travis Wiuff
- Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal vs. George Bush
- Josh Thomson vs. Ahinya Aoki
- Matt Lindland vs. Ronald "Jacare" Souza
- Robbie Lawler vs. Crafton Wallace

Lindland vs Souza will turn out just like Sonnen vs Maia. Their jits is just too good.

Lindland got killed in the Belfort fight. Did anyone let Matt kow this? The whole zombie thing is creepy.
