Strikeforce Challengers 'Evangelista vs Gurgel' weigh in results

evangelista_gurgel

Strikeforce is now set to kick off an action-packed weekend of mixed martial arts action tomorrow night (Friday, Nov. 6) from the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif., with its latest "Challenger Series" installment.

The main card is set to hit the Showtime airwaves, beginning at 11 p.m. ET.

Today the 18 fighters set to compete on the card finished off the last of the pre-fight formalities at the World Sports Cafe with the official fighter weigh ins.

The two lightweight main event participants, Jorge Gurgel and Billy Evangelista, have agreed to compete at a catchweight of 159 pounds instead of the normal division limit of 155 pounds.

Under card fighter, Chris Culley, came in more than two pounds heavy for his featherweight contest against Maurice Eazel. He'll have some additional time to shed the excess weight or he'll likely have to forfeit a portion of his purse to Eazel.

Check out the full Strikeforce: "Challenger Series IV" weigh in results below:

Remember that MMAmania.com will provide live coverage of the main card beginning with the Showtime telecast at 11 p.m. ET, as well as up to the minute quick results of the under card action beginning at around 9 p.m.

Check in early and often ... it should be a fun night of fights.

And don't forget that the promotion will also host "Fedor vs. Rogers" on Saturday night, pulling out the big guns for its network debut on CBS. The main event will showcase the man widely considered to be the best mixed martial artist on the planet, Fedor Emelianenko, locking horns with knockout artist Brett "The Grim" Rogers.

Of course, MMAmania.com will be all over the coverage of that blockbuster event, too. Keep it locked right here throughout the weekend.

I though that “Challengers” was for new up and coming fighters? Gurgel isnt exactly that.

Shane Del Rosario has been tearing it up in M-1. Keep an eye on him. Cole Escevedo was a big big prospect before he almost died and was paralyzed from a staph infection. His return has been successful, one more guy to keep an eye on. And though most don’t care, it’s nice to see more and more women filling out divisions.

Jizzo, I generally think of the Challengers shows as like UFN’s. Usually some pretty good scraps. Gurgel looking pretty shredded here.

War JT Money. I’m still pissed off for the way he was treated for sounding off on the whole Rampage thing.

Both main event fighters came in over weight, arent these guys susposed to be “professional” fighters. Bad for business in my opinion, hope Gurgel get beat up on the feet like always, too bad he know jits but wont use it. He could have been “good” now he is missing weight on a main event challengers series card, wow!

Gurgel = roids. Amazing transformation from 6 years ago or so…..

by deadgrassinyard on Nov 6, 2009 7:26 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

…6 yrs??? yea you’re right, no one can improve their physique in such a short period of time.

by Crowls on Nov 6, 2009 9:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Pretty easy for you to sit there behind a keyboard and make such a comment, hunh deadgrassinyard? Gurgel is one of the last people to be on roids.

by GG on Nov 6, 2009 9:53 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes GG, you are so correct. He is still a boring fighter to watch….and if you didn’t understand my post, that was the point to it. 6 years and he looks great and that is not due to roids. I thought I’d beat everyone else to that comment as they all state GSP is on roids too.

He will never make it back to the UFC though.

by deadgrassinyard on Nov 6, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he looked the same when I last saw him and he doesn’t have that much mass just a little more toned, which can easily be done with diet and cardio….

by Robert(1) on Nov 6, 2009 4:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He was a very small, slightly flabby LW, so it’s only natural that some would think roids.
..and why would he be “one of the last people on roids”?
Royce Gracie, Franca, Sherk etc, but oh no, not Gurgel?

I DESERVE TO BE ON THESE CARDS I FOUGHT IN k-1 AND I OWN THE WORLD RENOWED SHARK TANK HOME OF THE KEN SHAMROCK BOOTCAMP AND SECONDLY I ATTACK LIKE A HUNGRY SHARK IN A CHUMMED POOL OF SEALS AND SURFERS SO IF I HAD A CHANCE TO SMASH AND FEED IT WOULD BE THERE IN A STRIKEFORCE RING BECAUSE I HOLD NOTHING BACK AND I THINK ITS MY TURN TO SHOWCASE MY SHARK ATTACK AND I NEEDED TO BE TREATED LIKE A k-=1 VET OR I WILL START STREET FIGHTING AND DOING IT THE WRONG WAY
