Im not the biggest Brandon Vera fan, but I have a feeling that Couture will bring the best out of Vera in what I expect to be an entertaining fight. Personally, I want to see Vera light Randy the Fock up, because I cant stand Captain Paycheck!

captin’ paycheck is a perfect nickname for randy… one of the best nicknames coined from this very site..
im not sure, but i think it was pw who made it up? if not, does anyone know who coined ‘captin paycheck’?

wake up call: Randy Couture is a top level fighter. No matter what age, how many consecutive wins/losses, what weight class…none of that matters when it comes to Randy. He’s got a legit shot at beating any person on this Earth on any given day. A guy like that verses Brandon Vera is an amazing fight. I’m really excited about this. It’s such an odd match-up of styles. And the rest of this card is AMAZING too. Swick/Hardy, Kang/Bisping, Wilkes/Brown. Terry Etim is also a cool guy to watch. I’m lovin this card. Don’t hate guys….these cards are always the BEST!

I agree captain paycheck is a dumb nickname. Ill take the heat 8yr old boy I don’t mind.
Randy gets that name for looking out for himself & being a grown man who has trouble being bossed around by a Guy 10 years his younger calling him a kid. Ya real hard to understand why randy would want what he’s worth & get into a few debates @ his place of employment after what 10 years there?
What we need is a great nick name for the grotesquely over rated Vera, whom after his last fight (which u could nominate for boring f.o.t.year) is in need of a name bad. His laundry list of boring fights is incredible! And this is the man who’s gonna hold the LHW & Hw belts @ once? Buahahaha!
Now tell me “oh it was all kryz that made that fight boring”. BS it was Vera ‘king of all things boring’ Vera.
The truth!

Randy got the name for claiming the UFC and Dana violated his contract and never paid him what he was owed, then Dana produced copies of the cancelled checks that Randy had cashed.

ispo facto = captain paycheque
I till this day can’t believe that happend and was amazed that it blew through like the wind. Dana just sort of wrote it off.
I guess its their business but it still made me conjour up thoughts of when i found out Hulk Hogan went bad.

Does anyone else see a future for another heavy weight class? In between LHW and HW. These two would be star candidates for a 225 division. I know HW is thin now but in time and with a boat of talent in 205 that could go up who knows….
been something i’ve thought about in traffic.

The best part of it was when Captain paycheck was exposed in his bs -
“Hey cro cop makes way more $$$, blah blah blah , i never got one cent from the UFC. Oh wait, i don’t remember dana cutting me a check for 500Gs. Wait there is proof? You know what this was never about the money, this is about respect. Wait?I said money was respect? Damn. Well this is about the fighters, I am sticking up for all the downtrotten fighters who have no insurance. Yea, that.” -Really randy?Really?
The ungreatfulness after all that money made, all that Xtreme Fashion gym success, all that straight to dvd movie money, worse than everything all those undeserved title shots – the man still has the balls to pull this. I won’t even get into his personal life because that’s a whole other non-captain america like mess.

Lol @ Randy having a chance to beat anyone on Earth on a given day he’s so overrated it’s insane. You want to talk about actual greatness and not 16-10 UFC marketing machine greatness look at Fedor. It’s an absolute joke and a stigma on our sport that he STARTED fighting at 37 and is still going at 46…an ABSOLUTE JOKE.

randy is too short and too slow i think for vera. vera will bring it for this and will finish randy 3rd round tko. randys only chance is the clinch against the cage but he doesnt have the weight to do that like syvia did and vera will punish him with knees if he does.

Wrong Egads. Randy will out power Vera, he’ll get on top of him and and dish out some classic Randy GnP. Vera WON’T be able to wrestle with Randy. Plus, yes Vera does have jiu jitsu BUT Randy has never been submitted. If big nogs jits wasn’t good enough to submit Randy then Vera’s definately won’t. Randy will take this to the ground and finish it. TRUST ME!

pay no mind to John G, he’s a legend-hater who’s pissed that Randy’s gotten 7 title shots, never mind that he won 6 of those by vicious beatdown. John G thinks losing to Lesnar and Nog means a guy is washed up and should take a back seat to rookies who are on 2 fight win streaks over nobodies.
by shonuff on Nov 2, 2009 4:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Randy hasn’t won more than 2 consecutive fights in UFC in this decade, yet he’s had god knows how many title shots. Going back to UFC 31 in 2001, Captain Paycheck’s UFC record is as follows: L, L, W, W, L, W, L, W, L, W, W, L, L, W, W. Total of 8-7. If he’s a football team he doesn’t mkae the playoffs. If he’s a college team he’s in the Motor City Bowl. He gets credit for not fighting any record-padding losers, but to truly be a legend you should win more than half the time.
by PW on Nov 2, 2009 4:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I can see your reasons for hating on Randy PW, john G etc. But I can’t hate on him. Too nice of a guy and sure his record isn’t great compared to Fedors and what not
But way I see it is that he still deserves credit where credits due. Beat Chuck, Tito and even Van Arsdale ( when they were meant to be the biggest things) among others.
As for the paycheck thing, only difference between him and Tito is that Tito comes across a dick majority of the time. Everytime he fights I look forward to it. Big Nog fight was class, Gonzaga fight was class, hell even the Lesnar fight made me appreciate him more for the fact he got back to his feet and even exploited (very little but still some) holes in Lesnar’s standup
All in all, Randy’s a legend for me and always gonna watch him…….just gutted I can’t go to this UFC cause I’m havin my 21st that weekend :(

P dub, I hear what ur saying about randy’s record but let’s be serious, he fights more tough fights than anybody.. & u give him so lil credit. Ya he’s inconsistent, so is the majority of UFC fighters, difference is their inconsistent w/mid level fighters & he is w/the top. So? He’s in his mid 40’s!
Btw, ur football comparisons are way off, because no teams only face the saints (09), the patriots (07) etc all year. They play equal comp, and lesser comp to maintain a steady winstreak & make playoffs. When has randy fought mid level guys?
Peazy,
Randy is the master @ utilizing what gameplan is necessary to win his fight & overcome his opponent as well as his age, & usual size mismatch, & that’s never boring to me, its incredible. Vera is to blame if this fight is boring like all his fights are. But its nice to know the excuses are already being started/blamed if this fight is ‘boring’.
Which to me it won’t be boring anyways, cause i’ve never seen a boring randy fight. Seen a sh*tload of Vera boring fights.

I don’t hate Randy, I just don’t think one win should automatically give him a title shot, and that’s how it’s been with him for years now. And if you think a win over Vera doesn’t get him a shot at the Machida-Shogun rematch winner you’re kidding yourself.
by PW on Nov 2, 2009 5:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry PW, thought you really did hate him. And no way am I trying to say that he deserves a shot with a over Vera. Vera’s no one to beat to get a title shot, especially if ya haven’t fought (let alone won) at a weight division in over…..how many years has it been since Chuck? 2,3? I think it’d be interestin to see him fight Shogun if he wins since Machida is out

I hate that myth of Randy the gameplanner. He’s just been good at exposing people with weak cardio and clinch games. Add in improved Guida’ing skills and you got the captain.

I think thats bull NNR. What about mixing Big Tim up big time with the boxing/takedowns. Tim admitted that he thought Randy was gonna shoot when he punched and vis versa. And what about when he out struck Chuck. Or how he manhandled Gonzaga and Tito? I think he had great gameplans and his work ethic is great to see, cause seeing a fighter doing what he wants and keeping his energy is something to admire in my opnion. Randy’s a legend!!

How many times has Randy actually successfully defended a title? twice maybe? Sorry but that how I measure LEGENDARY fighters! Randy isnt HALF the Fighter that Nog and Fedor have been, and I really mean that! Lets not even mention that he is an average at best HW. Randy should be fighting Mir, in a Loser FOCK off match!
Randy winning is a nightmare! He will coach opposite of Machida on TUF,especially now that lyoto is injured! anyone rooting for that is a moron
by john G on Nov 2, 2009 8:29 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’d rather see a warrior and a 2 weight champion win than a greedy, arrogant, overrated Filipino who wasted his potential but is kept on the roster in high profile fights because of his much more talented and successful compatriot Pacman.
Randy is the man, he’s not the greatest of all time by any means but he’s beaten some quality fighters like Chuck, Tito, Vitor and Rizzo when all 4 were expected to smash him. Since his return from retirement he’s gone 2-2 at HW despite being outweighed in every fight, in his wins over Sylvia and Gabe looking dominant and a class above his larger foes and in his defeats to Brock and Nog giving everything that he had and making both of them earn their wins.
John and NNR you may dislike Randy but the guy has spent his career fighting against the best with an age and size disadvantage and has still become a 5x UFC champion, over 2 weights. He may not have the best record numerically but over that competition he deserves all of the credit that he gets. Add to that a successful gym and having made a lot of money in fighting, as well as being a class act out of the sport and a great spokesman for it makes him a legend in my eyes. He isn’t as great as Nog or Fedor but he is still the man and I can’t wait to see him fight, even if it is against Vera.
by David W-S on Nov 2, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Aside from my hate of the man, Randy to me is simply a fighter who has fought good guys – he’s won against some, lost against some, never displayed dominance. That underdog role is simply irrelevant in terms of his skills. It also bothers me when people call him 5X UFC champion, why isn’t anderson 10X UFC champ?Or chuck? Or Hughes? All of them truly dominant but they don’t need titles to justify their legacy. Couture does which is why you need all kinds of monickers and quotes in front of his name to show his greatness.
The question about his age – here’s a simple answer. He started fighting at 33. He doesn’t have the wear and tear of a Big Nog or Cro Cop (massive beatings or 20yrs in some form of combat). His fighting pace isn’t high. To me if you wanna admire him as an MMA Icon why don’t you put for example a Josh Barnett in the same exact light (without the roids for our argument)? Beat some great fighters, lost to great fighters, was never really anything special, but actually possesses more skills than randy.

U guys that keep bringing up Couture’s MMA record are forgetting an important fact. Sice 2001 his loses are to: Josh Barnett, Ricco Rodriguez, Vitor Belfort, Chuck Liddell, Brock Lesnar, Big Nog… Lets not count an roided out Barnett or Vitor’s win by eye injury. All these guys were considered the number one contendor in their weight class or UFC Champions or future MMA hall of famers. It’s not the win/loss record that counts if u don’t fight the best, and that’s all Couture ever wantst to do is fight the best.
by DAVE A on Nov 3, 2009 12:53 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Well said as usual, David, and Daniel, you hit the nail on the head! You can’t compare Randy’s record to someone like Rashad or Thiago cause those guys fought a dozen cans before they ever met a top 5 fighter. Randy has only had one opponent in the last 12 YEARS in the UFC who wasn’ ranked in the TOP 3 and he is 9-4 in WORLD TITLE FIGHTS. By comparison, against TOP 10 opponents, Rashad is 2-1-1, Thiago Silva is 1-1. So how can people say he is less worthy than those guys to get another shot? Does anyone really think Rashad or Thiago would have done better than Randy against Brock or Nog? Then why should those losses put him below them in determining who’s worthy of a title shot? Comparing straight W/L is apples to oranges. Does anyone really think Rashad’s draw with Tito was more impressive than Randy’s performance against 285 lbs Lesnar? Or that Rashad’s split decision over freakin Bisping means more than Randy going the distance with #2GOAT Noguiera? W/L numbers don’t tell the real story, folks.
by shonuff on Nov 3, 2009 1:21 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Damn straight! Who else has fought ONLY TOP-3 ranked FIGHTERS for TWELVE STRAIGHT YEARS!!! Lets see how good Machida, Rashad, Thiago’s records look 10 years from now…then you can talk to me about Couture’s numbers! Great comparison with Evans and Silva, Shonuff! If you compare Randy at a similar stage in his career to Machida, Randy was 5-0 in his first 5 fights against TOP-5 ranked opponents in the UFC Since Machida has started fighting ranked fighters he’s 3-1 (that’s right, folks, we all know Shogun beat him.) Everyone thought Machida was unbeatable and would rule unchallenged forever, just like everyone thought Vitor Belfort was the most dominant and destructive fighter in history till Randy got hold of him. Same goes for Mo Smith, Chuck Liddell, and Tito Ortiz. All were considered utterly dominant and unbeatable till “Captain Paycheck” handed them their asses! I know Randy ain’t Fedor, but he’s had almost twice as many fights against TOP-5 guys, and he earned every damn one of those FIVE WORLD TITLES by beating the shit out of the dominant champions of the time!

Here, here, David. You nailed it in your first paragraph. There’s a reason Randy keeps getting title shots and main event fights: He’s commonly billed as the underdog, yet often comes through with spectacular upsets. Even when he loses, he’s always the one pressing the action and looking for the win. The guy’s a true warrior in every sense of the word, and someone worth looking up to. If certain folks on this site can’t see that, then I just feel sorry for them.
‘Course, that’s not to say I won’t gloat when Randy manhandles little Brandon.
Hang on, I just realized that this needs to be billed as the battle of MMA’s worst first names. “Randy vs. Brandon” … Sounds like a terrible Disney channel sitcom.

Heheh. It does sound like a Disney sitcom. But I can’t say they’re the worst first names in MMA. “Mirko” sounds like a Don Bleuth cartoon villain, “Fyodor” sound like a teddy bear, and “Gegard” sounds like an unfortunate reflux condition….not to mention all those hediculous Gracie names like “Holes”, “Hick’s-son”, “Half”, and “HENZO” (wasn’t he a Muppet?), etc. And what the hell kinda name is “Chael”! What was his mama smokin???

Randy will hold Vera up against the cage for 15 minutes. Tim Silvia did it. Couture will do it. You can’t light anybody up when they are pressed up against you the whole time. This will be a very boring fight.

by shonuff on Nov 3, 2009 1:25 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It’s kinda like rock, paper, scissors. Couture’s greco wrestling/dirty boxing is paper and Vera’s muay tai is a rock. Paper covers rock.
by peazy on Nov 2, 2009 3:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think anybody who’s been on the receiving end of a Couture GnP would call his wrestling “paper”. If anything, wrestlers are the rocks and strikers are the scissors. But I don’t think Vera’s muy tai is sharp enough to be scissors. I think he’s the paper. But in real life, paper doesn’t cover rocks. Randy is gonna be Vera’s paper-weight.
by shonuff on Nov 2, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Randy’s greco-clinch is heads, but Vera’s Thai clinch is tails, while Randy’s GnP is odds, but Vera’s leg kicks are evens. Damn, this one is too hard to call.

Vera-Sylvia is the third worst UFC fight I’ve ever seen, only behind Sylvia-Monson (so bad I would have changed channels had it not been for GSP-Hughes II as the main event) and Quarry-Starnes levels of shittiness.
by David W-S on Nov 2, 2009 6:08 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I actually thought Vera vs Timmie was better than Silva vs Leites – that was bad. At least Vera-Sylvia made contact.
Monson was hilarious while in Tim’s guard.
by Big Zino on Nov 2, 2009 6:13 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Silva-Leites was 25 minutes of the best p4p fighter fooling around against a substandard opponent who by the last 2 rounds had resorted to lying on the floor as he couldn’t take the fight to the ground, at least Andy made it vaguely interesting by showboating. Vera-Sylvia was 15 minutes of hugging, which is all Sylvia can do against decent fighters and Vera broken hand or not was too small and not motivated enough to do anything back.
by David W-S on Nov 2, 2009 7:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs

Leites is a boring fighter in general, he’s a one dimensional BJJ specialist with no wrestling or striking skills so he either gets a quick submission or loses after displaying clumsy kickboxing. It’s a joke that he got a title fight in the first place. All of Vera and Sylvia’s recent fights have sucked as well.

I love Randy and think he is one of the greatest of all time, but at no time in his career would he ever have destroyed Noguiera. And in his earlier days, Nog might have been able to submit him. Randy’s ground game is as good as it ever was, maybe better. He just matched 285 lbs NCAA Champion Lesnar Takedown for Takedown, scramble for scramble, and TDD for TDD! He only lost that fight because he underestimated Lesnar’s reach and overestimated his own boxing. Had he not made the same mistake with Nog, he might’ve eeeked out a SD with clinch-boxing, TDs, and Top Control. But that’s a big maybe and there’s no chance he would ever have TKO’d or dominated Nog. Nog is too smart, too slippery, and has one of the best chins in the business.
by shonuff on Nov 3, 2009 1:52 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
please, the only reason randy lasted as long as he did against lesner was because lesner was being very careful. eventually, lesner would have realized how much stronger he was than randy and clobbered him up against the cage or on the ground. that knockout and series of six inch elbows was the nicest way for randy to lose. he shouldn’t feel bad though, no one can take lesner right now.
by Conan the Barbarian on Nov 3, 2009 2:36 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
True, Lesnar was being cautious and fighting a much smarter fight than his grammar would indicate him capable of, but Randy was controlling him in the clinch, took him down, stuffed one of his TDs, and got back up after Lesnar had him down. Who else can say ANY of those things?!? Randy is the smallest guy Lesnar has fought and yet he accomplished more offensively and defensively against Lesnar than all Brock’s other opponents COMBINED! (Unless you count Mir’s self-admittedly sloppy leg lock which was the result of Brocks rookie mistake.)

The only thing that worries me about Vera is his length. With the exception of Big Tim, Randy has always had trouble with significantly taller/longer fighters. Contrary to his “Tale of the Tape crap, Randy is nowhere near 6’2”. I’m 6’ and when we met he was noticably shorter than me. It’s also obvious in every staredown that he’s barely 6’ tall, if that.

randy will win this fight. he is a top level fighter and vera is nowhere near his level. unless an unforseen super vera shows up, randy is gonna wipe the mat with him.

Or unless he overestimates his boxing like he did against Nog and Lesnar! If he sticks with his bread-n-butter dirty boxing and top control, he’ll smother Brandon. But if he gets overconfident on the feet, Brandon could catch him with an unexpected knee or long-distance haymaker.
