Strikeforce signs DREAM welterweight GP champion Marius 'Whitemare' Zaromskis

NEW YORK (Oct. 31, 2009) - DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix Champion Marius "Whitemare'' Zaromskis (13-3) of Lithuania has signed a multi-fight agreement with world championship mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion Strikeforce.

Known for his explosive, highlight reel kicks, the 29-year-old, world-ranked Zaromskis has been his opponents' worst "Whitemare" the last three years. The 2009 DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix Champion has won five fights in a row and nine of his last 10.

Zaromskis is coming off an utter destruction of Myeon Ho Bae, winning by 0:19, first-round KO on Oct 25. The victory earned Zaromskis the 2009 DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix crown.

Remarkably, it was the third consecutive time Zaromskis won a fight with a head kick in the opening round. On July 20, 2009, he defeated both Jason High (2:22) and heavily favored Hayoto Sakurai (4:03) with head kicks to win DREAM's 170-pound tournament.

Zaromskis turned pro on Feb. 4, 2000. He fought several times for UK-based Cage Rage before joining DREAM in early 2009.

Two of his three losses came against former Cage Rage British champion in Che Mills.

Strikeforce in March 2009 signed a multi-year agreement to stage live MMA events on the premium cable television network, Showtime. Next Saturday, November 7, Strikeforce will make its live debut on CBS with its "Fedor vs. Rogers" mega-fight that it is co-promoting with M-1 Global.

I think its just awesome that Strikeforce with its open partnership with Dream etc is getting awesome fighters.

They are/will certainly be able to put together competitive fights that people want to see.

Love this guy, he’s like a welterweight cro cop!

by PathmarkPolice on Oct 31, 2009 8:27 PM EDT reply actions

he was pretty good in cage rage, although the level of competition he fought wasnt that great.

by ben on Oct 31, 2009 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

Thats a terrible nickname might as well have gone with WHITEMARIE LOL! Well it still is better then JLO Lauzon….

by Khaos_Warrior on Oct 31, 2009 9:05 PM EDT reply actions

better than brown pride

by brendan on Oct 31, 2009 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah but when you are as brutal as cain v you don’t even need a nickname, he just uses brown pride to have one

by randy murders on Nov 1, 2009 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

“Whitemare” is much more brutal than Velasquez is with the strikes.

by Diceman on Nov 1, 2009 7:42 AM EST up reply actions

ugh Cain V brutal? He’s a workhorse no doubt but he’s done nothing to show his brutality.

Mazz stopped the rothwell fight not Cains gnp.

Whitemare is a great nickname for the same reason Brown Pride is. Lets all be proud of ourselves for individual reasons – arent we all equal?

I MY GOD MANIA YOU COULDNT HAVE GIVEN ME A BETTER PRESENT THIS HALLOWEEN!!!!!! This dude needs to be seen by the US audience.

by Youtaped on Oct 31, 2009 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

He was losing to Ross Pointon ffs. Che Mills had his number. London Shoot is a great gym, but Hathaway is the best WW out of there.

by mack3333 on Oct 31, 2009 10:12 PM EDT reply actions

Correct, he’s a good fighter but way over rated if you ask me. A number of the TUF UK team guys would give him a good fight and he would be way outclassed by so many UFC figters.

by MoonUK on Nov 1, 2009 3:46 AM EDT up reply actions

noone said he was the best fighter he’s probably the most exciting though

by Jared on Nov 1, 2009 9:37 AM EST up reply actions

You must of only seen his last few fights…

by MoonUK on Nov 1, 2009 11:05 AM EST up reply actions

Well there have been plenty of fighters who just needed a push to up their level. This tourney just might have been that for him. Still though i doubt too many people who know him if he had gotten beat during the tourney.

by NameNotRequired on Nov 1, 2009 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Marius is the man, he’s very exciting and is in the form of his life right now. Anyone who can get 3 consecutive headkick KO wins in Japan including one over a quality fighter in Mach is the real deal, defeats to Che Mills or not this guy has a great future at WW.

Hathaway’s got great potential but he’s not done anything of note yet, his biggest fight will be against Paul Taylor at 105, so you can hardly dismiss the Dream WW champion as not being as talented as an unproven British prospect. Marius has clearly improved since his Cage Rage days and I’m looking forward to seeing him in SF, a fight with Diaz/Hieron would be huge.

by David W-S on Nov 1, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

brad blackburn knocked jay hieron out, so i can see marius doing that but much worse. diaz would eat my boy whitemare up alive but i think marius could make it competitive for a bit

I really LOVE what strikeforce is doing. THey are definitely headed in the right direction to emerge as a long term competitor to the UFC. Their partnership with DREAM is just awesome and it will provide fans with some awesome match ups!

Props to strikeforce!

Anyone know when the showtime countdown show for Fedor/Grim airs?

Hopefully Galvao gets loaned out to SF, because I would love to see Galvao and Diaz in a grappling WAR!

I cant possibly begin to tell you guys how excited I am for Saturday! Fedor on CBS! That is Fockin HIstoric! Saturday will be a huge day in the history of mma! I know mma has been on CBS before, but those cards featured a backyard fighter and womans mma….This card is amazing and relevant to many of the divisional rankings!!! I have to admit that Grim worries me!

Very curious to see how Silva/Werdum unfolds!

by john G on Nov 2, 2009 9:26 AM EST up reply actions

he wasn’t losing to pointon. pointon was getting his arse kicked.

by demwunz on Nov 1, 2009 6:00 AM EST up reply actions

No one think he’s the best, most well rounded champion, only that he is a good fighter with an exciting style. As MMA has evolved it’s become too much of a game of fight to win, not fight for a finish. Zaromskis fights for a finish every time.

by quidnunc on Nov 1, 2009 9:36 AM EST up reply actions

if Diego ever moves back up to 170. Nightmare vs Whitemare, make it happen!

by nameless on Oct 31, 2009 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

That guy kind of looks like Diego, too.

by steven on Nov 1, 2009 9:38 AM EST up reply actions

He won the WW championship and the WW grand prix title by winning over Jason High in the WW tournament. The recent fight with Bae was not for a title.

by guy on Oct 31, 2009 11:22 PM EDT reply actions

Zaromskis is fucking awesome and so is his nickname.

I wonder how many high kick KO’s he’ll have on his record when he’s done fighting…
