UFC 104 medical suspensions and injuries

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) recently issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 104: "Machida vs. Shogun," which took place on Saturday, Oct. 24 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
With several of the bouts drawing blood, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged follow up visits with their doctors, including Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida — who went Hollywood and got bee-stung lips courtesy of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. "Big" Ben Rothwell — who had his eyebrow opened up during his drubbing at the hands of Cain Velasquez, was also benched for his injuries.
Spencer "The King" Fisher will also need to give his melon a rest after Joe "Daddy" Stevenson pounded on it en route to a second round technical knockout. And Yoshiyuki "Zenko" Yoshida didn’t get off easy either after going limp against Anthony "Rumble" Johnson.
Here is the complete list of UFC 104 injuries and their medical instructions:
Lyoto Machida: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for upper lip laceration.
Ben Rothwell: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for right eyebrow laceration.
Spencer Fisher: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for right eye laceration.
Yoshiyuki Yoshida: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.
Patrick Barry: Suspended 180 days (180 days no contact) for possible left wrist fracture.
Antoni Hardonk: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.
Rob Kimmons: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for forehead laceration.
Eric Schafer: Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) for nose laceration.
Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Yoshida and Hardonk get knocked into next Tuesday and get 45 days. Machida gets a cut lip and gets 60. Great job CSAC!!!
No suspension for Stevenson’s torn tricep, sustained while patting himself on the back?

Let’s just get it done so we can crown the new LHW Champ—SHOGUN!

It would still be in enough time it is takes 60 full days. All of November and all of December

There is a chance of Machida the Dragon coming back before the 60 days is up. Does any one else think it’s amazing he won the fight with a broken hand. Not that it has never been done before becuase it obviously has, but I mean, I wouldnt have guessed either hand was hurt by the way he fought.

I thought it was an automatic 30 days for every fighter? Is this not true or has things been changed?

NYE card is already looking really nice, i don’t think they’ll put machida vs shogun on it.
Silva vs Vitor (MW Champ)
Rashad vs Thiago
Lesnar vs Carwin (HW Champ)
dos Santos vs Gonzaga
condit vs daley
joe lauzon vs stout
dan lauzon vs cole miller
first 5 is the main card. i doubt they’ll stack another champ fight in there, there will be a couple more prelims but not really big name regular ppv main eventers.

Not that there is a direct correlation but you would think the guy who is hurt more losses the fight. Notice that shogun isnt on the list b/c nothing happened to him cause he WON that fight. notice how you dont see many of the winners from ufc 104 on this list.

I must have missed something… I thought Machida and Barry both won?
by Cole on Oct 28, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh yeh man sure, you’re clearly right.
Hardonk totally should’ve won that fight cus he put 135 days more suspension time on barry
it has no correlation at all, can we drop this now?

Yes he did. Ninja was even carrying him when they thought he had the W but he said no. His ribs hurt, and I’m sure it was from those Dragon Knees….

Seems like the guys on TUF never have to deal with suspensions. Kimbo got TKOed and is looking to get back in. Anyone here know how this works?
by DolFan on Oct 28, 2009 3:55 PM EDT reply actions
They need to be cleared to fight as well, Forrest almost got thrown out of TUF 1 because of his cut from the Schoenauer fight, a bunch of winnners of the entry fight on TUF 8 and TUF 9 weren’t allowed in the house as they weren’t medically cleared to fight in time and last year Frank Lester got to fight again because the other eliminated Team US WW wasn’t cleared to fight again.
Kimbo is only being shown begging for another fight for ratings, as it keeps his fans watching in case he does fight again. It’s pathetic that most of the episodes have devolved into “will Kimbo fight again#?” teases. I’d laugh if he got another chance to fight only to not get medical clearance.

Can we add days to Rothwell’s suspension? One of the lamest efforts I’ve seen. His Kongo impersonation (how NOT to fight Cain) was right on except for the the hard shots that Kongo hit Cain with. Now we know why he’s been fighting in the B leagues. He got my vote for “can of the night”.
