Despite illness of his own, Shane Carwin 'would have never pulled out of the fight'

"Last week was the first week that I actually started feeling better from a strain of the swine flu. I had lost over 15 pounds (something I could not afford to loose) and had just pulled some muscles in my leg during training. As 104 approached my manager said, 'we should be thankful we are not fighting, from your re-broken nose to the leg, this wasn’t our time'. As I prepared to go to 104, I began slowly realizing what was ahead of me; I needed to be home training and rehabbing, not traveling and missing days of necessary time with my Team. I was due to be fighting for the UFC Heavyweight title. I called Jason back and said you are right, but I can’t go to LA I need to train. I was reminded about my commitments to the fans at Kmart and the Q&A, and I knew I had to go. In LA I was reminded exactly why we do this sport. Fans were all over the place and every interaction was a positive one. While at Kmart I meet a young man who competes in the Special Olympics and he said he looked up to us fighters. I was so taken back by the fact that he put us fighters on a pedestal. Here was this young man who defied incredible odds in life to reach the Olympics and he pushes himself every day to do things you and I take for granted. I was bitching about a flu, my leg (that would heal), and taking time away from training and this young man looks up to me? He gave me his Octagon necklace and I do not think he realized what an impact he made on me. I knew right then that I was going to suck it up and drive on. Edward and the rest of Team Carwin would be the fuel to carry me through the rough times and make sure that come fight night I will be the champion ... Fighting for the UFC belt is my path and honestly Brock coming down with his illness only gives me more time to be in that much better shape. It is a blessing if you want to know the truth. I would have never pulled out of the fight. I would wheel myself to the cage if it was my choice. I know this is my destiny and I don’t need everything to be perfect I just need my opportunity to show the world what I can do and who I am."
UFC heavyweight number one contender Shane Carwin engineers a blog post at ShaneCarwin.com detailing his own troubles leading up to his recently kiboshed UFC 106 title fight against Brock Lesnar. The champ was forced to withdraw from their bout after spending more than three weeks battling illness, prompting the UFC to postpone the match to a pending date of Jan. 2 in Las Vegas. Now Carwin reveals he too was on the mend -- but would have preferred they wheel him to the cage in a wheelchair instead of canceling the match. Perhaps they'll need that wheelchair after he faces Lesnar at UFC 108 -- or will he be the one doing the crippling? Opinions, Maniacs?

Give’em hell Shane, can’t wait for the showdown with Brock. They better reinforce that Octagon, thats alot of weight flying around in there.

Nice. I know he will get flamed as talking crap but you know everyone has been burning up his phone line and knocking down his door trying to get the latest sound byte. I thought it was a good post. I don’t blame Brock for dropping out though. I’d rather fighters do that than hear the excuses later.

Im tired of hearing this “saintly” bull shit, please get over the fact that you are in a sport that rwards people for beating the shit out of each other, so what if a fighter said this or that get over the whole ‘disresect’ of the sport crap and just shut up and do your job when the time comes, then you’ll have your chance to say whatever you want

totally agree man .. Carwin seems 2 think he wrote the rules on octogon manners and etticet ( prob spelt that wrong ) get of ur high horse and stop saying “our sport doesnt need this” and "we dont do this in OUR sport " A fight is a fight … not everyone can have bad things said about them for months and immediately switch off after they whip someones ass

yukdog and rich, i see what yall are sayin but at the same time i understand carwins thinking and i think hes right but i dont think its his buisiness how other athletes act.
carwin just looking out for the sport, he wants people to know it is a sport and one that deserves more respect, and in his eyes guys like brock are why the media looks down on it, and i get that but like you i agree he needs to drop it

OK if you guys actually read the quote he said nothing disparaging about Brock—the title is a bit misleading. He says at the end that he wouldn’t have pulled out of the fight but does not criticize Brock for doing so.

It’s implied. Barney wouldn’t drop out, but Brock did, which makes Barney the lord high savior of MMA.
by PW on Oct 28, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions
The decision you would make in this situation depends on the view you have:
If you are a challenger, you would most likely do anything, anywhere, anytime to challenge for the belt, and not give up the opportunity because you do not know when you will get another.
If you are the champion, you have the one thing everyone wants and you want to make sure you are in the best possible condition to defend it.
by DJ on Oct 28, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions
It is absolutely implied. There was no need for his comments. Him losing 15 pounds? Everyone says he is Brocks size but watch the Gonzo fight and realize that he is about 255 at fight time. If he fights the way he did against Gonzo he is getting pounded out in the first round. People need to stop listening to this guy bitch and understand he is just trying to market himself as the good guy to brocks bad guy.

We get it Barny! You are the defender of good and Brock is evil. yada yada yada. Brock is a bitch for pulling out a fight that you wouldnt. We get it! You already talked your way into a title shot, stfu now!

I am not a Brock Fan but the more Carwin speaks the more I can’t wait to see Brock pound him into chopped meat…He is like one of those guys that always has to one up you:
“Oh Brock has the Flu, well I gust beat Cancer. I lost 15 pounds, broke my Femur, got shot shot by a laser beam from an Alien civilization that just rectally probed me and discovered the fountain of youth(in their probing of my anus), and I won’t start training till the day before the fight because I will be helping a tribe of Pygmies in the Amazon, dig a fresh water well, and am personally putting up the 311 towers it will take to bring electricity to their little town. Wait I am not done, Today we are bulding each family in the tribe(all 40 of them) 6br/4ba 4000 sq. foot double level ranch style homes out of the trees that I personally cleared to make way for the previously spoken of towers…OH but Wait not done yet…..”

NOGUEIRA LOOKED LIKE SHIT AGAINST MIR BUT WE ALL SAW HIM DESTROY COUTURE WHEN HE WAS 100%. I’D RATHER WAIT A FEW MONTHS TO SEE BOTH AT 100% THEN PAY $45 TO SEE A CRAPPY FIGHT.

by Irishmikey on Oct 28, 2009 3:45 PM EDT reply actions
Is anything Barney says or does any less for show? WWE thrives on having a bad guy and a good guy. Barney is trying to position himself as the ultimate good guy in this little charade and is failing miserably. If you follow this site at all, you know that I am the driver of the Lesnar War Wagon. And every time Barney runs his mouth more and more seats fill up.

Irish, how is Brock a freak of nature and Shane isn’t? They have the same amount of experience roughly and Shane also relies heavily on his size. Brock is the better athlete and wrestler though so I don’t understand your post.

I have been authorized by myself to speak on Brock’s behalf, so here goes: Barney, quit your crying. You are a coward for wanting to fight Brock at less than 100%. You know you can’t beat him. You know that after Brock gets done turning you into a bloody pile of meat all you will have to hang your huge hat on is your self-righteous sense of sportsmanship. Atfer taking the beating that you have so richly earned, you will be humiliated. You may get the horse and lasso treatment that Herring got, or maybe just have Brock tell you very loudly right to your demolished face what a useless piece of crap you are. Or maybe you will get an entirely new humiliation. Just be sure that it will happen, and there is nothing you can do to stop it.

I am sick of Carwin’s mouth. HE is so high and mighty. It is not like he pulled out cause his leg hurts or something he has been sick for almost a month. My wife had swine flue for almost 2 weeks and she didn’t get out of bed much. She wasn’t back to full strenth for a week or two after that. If i were brocks opponint and i thought i could beat him i would want to beat the best brock not I have been sick and only trained for two weeks brock.
To me much of this sounds like insecurity. He wanted Brock to limp into the fight so that he could have a chance to beat him rather than thinking he could beat brock and wanting to show the world that he can beat a full strength brock

Shane is telling it like it is. People get sick they rest 2 or 3 weeks and get over it and back to work! Lebron James had the SWINE FLU 3 WEEKS AGO AND SCORED ALMOST 40 POINTS LAST NIGHT! Brock is making excuses! Maybe he is worn out from riding his wife, like we give a shit what this arrogant jerk does with his wife. I cant wait to hear his excuses when he gets knocked out!
by nicky on Oct 28, 2009 7:00 PM EDT reply actions
yeah but lebron doesn’t have to go to camp and work specific strats for basketball and he doesn’t get into gameshape and then recover. MMA is kinda like distance running (my sport) in that aspect. You peak in really good shape for your event but you can’t maintain that level for very long before the body starts to wear down. hence talk of over training and peaking too early

Wow. I can’t believe how much hate Carwin is getting right now. After Carwin smashes Brock, watch all of you come out and go “holy crap, I love Carwin, thank goodness he beat that disrespectful asshole Lesnar.” Its the same thing as when everyone in the Comcast Arena was booing Anderson when he walked out to face Forrest, and after the fight all of the sudden everyone is Anderson’s biggest fan.
I like Carwin more and more every time he speaks to be honest, and I used to think he was a total tool. I’m glad somebody was as offended as I was by Brock’s post fight antics (For the sport, not personally. If it was another situation that might have been really funny), and that somebody is actually capable of doing something about it. And don’t say that I’m just butthurt that Brock beat Mir, b/c I think Mir is almost as big of a tool as Brock is.
