UFC 106: Tito Ortiz already selling main event rematch against Forrest Griffin

ortiz_griffin

Props: Los Angeles Times

Quoteworthy:

"From low tide to high tide.... You figure in losing the title [to Evans] that Forrest has doubt; he had doubt against Silva. This is all or nothing for him. And this is my comeback fight. I'm not going to lie, it's been a challenge for me. Not pain. I have no [back] pain, but I'm dealing with the fatigue from not fighting so long. I'm like 80 to 90 percent now, not 100. Coming back is hard mentally and physically. So even though I won't be going anywhere -- I have five fights left on my contract -- it's kind of do or die for both of us. But I promise I'm going to get in there and entertain. I can't wait.... [The first fight] might have been a split-decision, but I thought I won. Look at my face after the fight, and look at his, and you'll also see my hand was raised afterward.... Two former champions. A lot of fans hate Forrest now after the Silva fight, but he usually brings it, and I always come to fight. I'm not going anywhere. I've been surviving for 12 years. I know how to do this."

Former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz talks about his upcoming rematch with Forrest Griffin in the UFC 106 main event at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21. Ortiz and Griffin earned top billing when it was recently revealed that box office behemoth, heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, was forced off the card unexpectedly because of an illness. The promotion will now look to "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy," who is one of the best in the business when it comes to promoting his own fights, to keep the interest alive in what likely would have been one of the biggest UFC event's of the year. Can Ortiz -- who has not competed since mid 2008 and is coming off major back surgery -- put UFC 106 on his shoulders and make it a success? Or is the pay-per-view (PPV) event now destined to disappoint?

suddenly hes 80-90% he’s so full of shit back peddling already i hope forest destroys him only then we’ll have to hear more shit of how he was only 60-70% more excuses blah blah blah

If he wins, he’ll say he’s healed. If he loses well, he never got to 100%.

With two evenly matched fighters, it should be a good fight. I hope Forrest makes Tito cry.

i wanna see tito win but he’s had a long layoff and griffin’s improved alot since the last time they fought. this is a pretty tough fight to call but i think griffins chin is getting pretty loose so ill go with tito by gnp stoppage in the third

More excuses. I bet after the drubbing at the hands of Lyoto that Ortiz is not a draw anymore. He was one when everyone for some reason believed the insane hype especially when he beat up roided old shammy. Quite frankly this is a main event where i am hoping for a double KO but neither man can bust a grape. Let’s just all hope they collide head first. I say split the Rogerio-Cane fight and match them against those two. I’ll guarantee everyone will see why these guys don’t belong there.

Great post as always NNR! awesome idea about splitting this fight and having them face Banha and Rogerio….Tito and Forrest would both lose and I would actually watch this event. with Forrest/Tito as the main event, I gotta boycott this crap! Worst main event since Evans/Bisping!

Ha. now he’s not 100%. Forrest by.. wait for it.. wait for it… TKO.

I dont give in to conformity.

Lots of potential for boredom in this fight. However, neither fighter can afford another loss, so motivation should be high. I agree with most posts, that Tito is lining up potential excuses, but I actually think Forrest has bigger questions to answer and more pressure on him. Forrest looked absolutely HORRENDOUS vs Silva, and the one thing no one questioned going in…his heart….now appears to be an issue. A bad loss by Forrest in this fight will absolutely put his fighting career in jeopardy.

Lol that’s funny! You hope Forrest makes tito cry? You should watch forrest’s fights! He’s the baby! Wah wah’d his way outta the cage twice now! Maybe we’ll be fortunate enough to see him act like a 3 year old without his dolly again next month.

Weak card now man. I wasn’t even bothered by 103 or 104 but 106 looks weak. They need another co main IMO. But who? Blah

Tito Ortiz is A JOKE. Dana White called him a “JACKASS” and he has the guts to sign with UFC ??? He made himself look stupid by crawling back to UFC because he know others ( Strikeforce, Dream , M1, KOTC will WHIP HIS ASS with their stars. I take Griffin on this one.

by Doug T on Oct 27, 2009 5:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m pretty sure you don’t know what your talking about. I don’t like Tito but if your saying all the other organizations had fighters he was scared of losing to so he joined the UFC you must be mentally handicapped. He joined the UFC because he was asking other orgs for too much money and they couldn’t provide it. He joined the UFC because he sat out so long he started to become more irrelavant than he already was and the UFC is the quickest way to gain a fan base.

The 205# division in the UFC is the strongest 205# out of all of the promos. Much like there 170# and 150#. Tito had nobody but Babalu and Mousassasi(maybe 1 to many s’s in htere) at 205# to worry about. Look at the Sherdog rankings. the whole top 10 list is the UFC excpet for Gegard.

I hope Forrest gets his head back in the game and welcomes Tito with a bif fat “L”. Not a decision either a tko or a sub. win to get Forrest awake and to send Tito packing..

Griffin on this one.

Forrest on this one.

by Doug T on Oct 27, 2009 5:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don’t want to see either of these guys lose. I guess I want Forrest to win if I HAVE to choose. But that is only because Forrest is on a 2 fight lose streak and he already has a loss to Tito.

by RyanHobbs on Oct 27, 2009 5:09 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow! hes already making excuses.
he will only say he is 100% after he wins a fight – hes always has to have a excuse if he was to lose!!!
Titos my boy but cmon , u have already lost !

Toto, a lot of fans hate you because all you do is run your mouth. You haven’t evolved in the last 9 years and haven’t had a win since beating a past his prime Ken Shamrock 3 YEARS ago. Not to mention the fact that you haven’t stepped up to fight anyone in the last year and a half.

by KS on Oct 27, 2009 8:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

you must be new as well…he’s had back surgery

by McArthur on Oct 27, 2009 8:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dont rate forest at all. Tito will take him down and tko him within 2 rounds. forrest only won tuf 1 cause the 205s were terrible. Shogun had busted knees when they fought, rashad, jardine and silva fit tore him apart. Jackson good win. giv him that but bonner, sinosic, mahood, ramirez, schoenauer come on. where are they now? forrest has the biggest heart and comes across as a great guy but thats not what mma is all about im afraid. its about mixing different fighting skills into ur own ability to become a complete fighter. no way is forrest a top 10 205 fighter.

by jjk on Oct 27, 2009 8:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Forrest will run back to Georgia again after Tito smashes his face. Next up for Forrest will be co-main eventing a fight night.

by Ron Konkoma on Oct 27, 2009 9:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

forrest will soon be down there with bonnar, if forrest wasn’t the poster boy for tuf he’d have been kick out a long time ago

by Robert(1) on Oct 27, 2009 9:36 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

They need 3 fights quick or throw it on Spike TV.

This is a very intriguing fight. I wasn’t even thinking about purchasing the PPV until Tito was added to the card. I feel bad for Carwin, but I couldn’t care less if I ever see Brock fight again to be honest.

Tito seems to be training with all the right people, and I feel he is only two or three wins from a title shot…going from (and beating) Coleman to Forrest is a good start. Love him or hate him he is one of the most underrated fighters in MMA. The guy has only ever lost to the best of the best. When Couture beat him, Randy was #1…when Chuck beat him, Chuck was #1…when Machida beat him, Machida was #1 and still is (albeit with contraversy).

With that said, people who call him “overrated” are confused. Who exactly are you comparing him to? He’s only lost to the best…if anyone in the LHW division were to fight Randy, Chuck, and Lyoto in their prime(s)….they’d probably lose all 3 fights…so what gives?

by OJR Is King (formerly Introvert) on Oct 27, 2009 10:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Imo this fight comes down to cardio. If Tito has plenty of gas he’ll be able to win this fight. If not, it will for sure be a decision because neither one or these guys can knock anybody out standing. If Tito comes with enough gas to go hard 3 rounds, then I think he gets enough take downs and enough gnp to win this one.

by brandon childers on Oct 27, 2009 10:11 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Tito saying that he’s only 80 to 90 percent is not an excuse. It’s what he should say at this point in time. Anyone who thinks Tito is overrated is basing it not on his record, but basing it on how Tito used to over-promise and under-deliver…that’s a bad way to market. Seems to me he’s taking a different route this time around and is trying to under-promise and over-deliver…that’s a better strategy for Tito.

Tito by GnP stoppage….early.

by OJR Is King (formerly Introvert) on Oct 27, 2009 10:20 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Forrest lost to Rashad then Silva. I don’t really see this as a do or die for him.

by DolFan on Oct 27, 2009 10:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It is do or die for him…people are starting to write him off his two loses were a tko followed by the most embarrassing loss in ufc history. A third loss in a row especially to a guy most people think isn’t very good anymore (I would disagree but I’m in the minority) would be devastating to his career and probably taxing on him emotionally. this fight is definitely do or die for him.

CHUCK VS. FRANKLIN ON THIS CARD AND IT WOULD SELL OUT IN 2 MINUTES

by JR on Oct 27, 2009 11:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with OJR, tito has beaten all other opposition other than number one ranked fighters. So if nothing else he will return to his co-event status he has been used to the past few years. I say round one stoppage for tito, forrest has had a habit of starting off slow and tito usually a fast starter. Forrest imo is mentally challenged; always judging himself and demeaning his abilities, then throwing fits after losing, the guy has issues. I think the UFC is tired of him and they actually want Tito to win to get him back in the mainstream media which can only mean $$$$$.

by cs on Oct 27, 2009 1:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s 80-90% now that he’s fighting Forrest? I saw him in a video at a live show say that he’s 100% and ready to fight RIGHT NOW…but I guess that was cause he was fighting Coleman at the time. lol
